Yeronga Newsletter - Week 5 / Term 4

Dear Parents and Carers

Thank you to all who contributed and celebrated World Teacher’s Day. We were very humbled by the wonderful and colourful spread for morning tea. Teaching is a great professional and we are all very proud to be part of it and to make a positive difference to your children.

This week, we opened the Prep rooms to our 2021 prep children. We were able to run three information sessions for parents under COVID guidelines. We trust that the sessions were useful and that the children enjoyed their morning in a prep classroom. Thank you to the amazing student leaders who co-presented and the ICT crew for their support. The thorough transition to school process is the work of Ms Freeman. Thank you, Ms Freeman and the staff that were part of the prep visit.

Cross River Rail project

From November 2020, UNITY Alliance will continue work within the rail corridor at Yeronga station for construction of the Cross River Rail project.

What to expect

During construction, you may notice some disruptions such as:

  • Light vehicles, trucks and machinery including excavators, mobile cranes, elevated work platforms, small power tools, drills, saws, minor vibrating equipment and mobile lighting towers to light work areas at night
  • Temporary traffic changes and reduced speeds
  • Changes around your local area such as construction vehicles, traffic management signs and personnel
  • Some noise, vibration and dust associated with the use of heavy machinery and equipment
  • Placement of temporary fencing around construction areas.

We appreciate your patience during the construction period and will continue to update you as work progresses.

Naidoc Week

On Friday, the school will recognise Naidoc week and students will wear red, yellow or black. We continue to work with the Kalari group to strengthen our position with ensuring that we have an indigenous perspective across our curriculum. I have borrowed this message from our region:

NAIDOC Week 2020 recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. This year’s theme Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists.

Australia is also acknowledged for having the world’s oldest oral stories. First Nations people engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies, and we know that the very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples.

Through acknowledging and celebrating NAIDOC Week 2020 8-15 November, you have the opportunity to embrace the history of our country that dates back thousands of generations.

Student Leadership

I would like to congratulate all the Year 5 students who nominated for a leadership position. Well done – the deadline was met. This week, Ms Paynter and I interviewed the students who had nominated for the position of School Captain. There were 31 applicants. Students were asked a series of set questions. The shortlisted applicants were presented on assembly and will present their speeches to the school on Friday 13 November. I wish them all the very best.

Michelle D’Netto

The last few weeks have been action packed at Yeronga State School, with the Year Five and Six Life Education visit, Year Two Make and Meld Incursion, World Teachers Day Morning Tea (thanks parents!), Gala Day, School Leadership 2021 Applications and the Prep Orientation Morning. It is an exhilarating time of year for us as we spend time in classrooms with students, reflecting on their growing wisdom as literate, numerate and curious learners.

PARENT REP THANK YOU

We would like to acknowledge and thank the dedicated group of parents who have acted as Parent Reps for their child’s class throughout 2020. These committed parents have been so generous with their time and provided support to both the class teachers and the parents of the students in the classes they represent. This is a great demonstration of the supportive community that we have here at YSS! A big shout out also to Jodie Swan also, for her diligent efforts as the Parent Rep Coordinator. Throughout 2020 Jodie has continued to do a magnificent job of keeping the communication lines open and keeping tabs on everything that happens in our busy school. Our sincere thanks to Jodie and her band of Parent Reps.

END OF YEAR EVENTS

We look forward to a number of exciting events over the coming weeks. Please note that due to COVID planning, parents are not able to attend these events in 2020. Please see the details below of some of our forthcoming events:

  • NAIDOC Week (Week 6). Friday 13 November Free Dress Day. Students will be invited to wear the colours of black, red, yellow and white in recognition of NAIDOC Week. These sacred colours are said to be given to the Indigenous people during the Dreamtime. Black represents the earth, marking the campfires of the dreamtime ancestors. Red represents fire, energy and blood - 'Djang', a power found in places of importance. Yellow represents water, and the markings on the back of the great snake ancestor. White represents the sky and stars, which are filled with the ancestors who returned to the sky after creating the earth.
  • We will not be holding an evening Disco this term – the plan is hold a disco during school hours as follows:

Week 7 Thursday 19 Nov: Yr 3-6 Disco at the end of the final Assembly time. Glow stick products will be on sale beforehand.

Week 8 Thursday 26 November: Prep- Yr 2 Disco at the end of the final Assembly time (approx. 2.15-3pm). Glow stick products will be on sale during beforehand

2021 PLANNING

It would be much appreciated if parents could let the school office know if their child will not be returning to YSS in 2021. Please send through this information to admin@yerongass.eq.edu.au.

Enjoy the remainder of Term 4- we have so much to look forward to!

Prep and Year 1 & Year 2 Christmas Concerts

The Prep and Year 1 & Year 2 Christmas concert will take place for students on Friday 4 December.  We are still in the phase of following COVID safety plans, therefore parents will not be asked to attend. We understand that this may be met with some sadness so we will ensure the children have a lovely experience.

Academic and Effort Awards 2020

This year the academic awards assemblies for Years 1-6 will occur during school time in Week 9. Due to COVID restrictions we are unable to have parents present for these presentations. Students will be recognised by their peers and YSS staff and take their certificates home to share with their parents and families. We will ensure a photo is taken of students receiving their award to be sent home to parents.

Camp at Home

Thank you for the great response to the showbags.  I hope it was fun camping at home, even with the deluge of rain we had over that weekend. Congratulations to the Hodgson family for winning Chappy Games with a significant lead.  A prize pack has been sent their way.  Let’s hope we can return to Camp at School in 2021.

Harmony Day

We didn’t get to celebrate Harmony Day this year as it was scheduled just as the world started to shut down with the pandemic.  So I’ve been able to bring a small Harmony Day presentation to both assemblies in week 5 and 6 this term.  The theme this year was “ A Million Dreams”, and I asked students back in term 1 these questions:

  • What sort of world do you want to create?
  • What is your dream for our school?
  • What sort of school do we want to work towards?
  • What is our collective dream for our school for inclusivity?

So what would your dream be for our school community?  I love that we’ve mostly worked out how to celebrate our differences and together make this school a place where “everyone belongs”.  We’ve realised that all our different beginnings, families, cultural differences, and unique talents come together to make our community very special.

Christmas Hampers

Thank you to the school community for your generosity towards this project of helping families with end of year festivities.  At this stage, we have enough goodies to make up five hampers, which is a great start to the aim of ten hampers for ten families.  You can continue to drop off your donations to the baskets in the office foyer.  It would be great if donations could be directed to items that are not in your usual weekly shop e.g. shortbread, chocolate, mince pies, puddings, nuts, and festive items.  You might like to purchase a couple of items and drop it off once, or buy something each week from now until the end of November.

Financial Assistance

St Vincent de Paul is offering financial assistance to families who have lost a significant proportion of their income because of Covid, helping with back to school assistance of uniforms, stationery, levies and other learning resources in 2021.  Vinnies would like to connect with you this year in preparation for next year, so please email or come and see me for more information, or call the Vinnies Helpline (1800VINNIE = 1800 846 643).

Coming Up

17/11 – Sub and Drink Lunch Deal.  This time around, no envelopes will be sent home, as you can place your order on Flexischools, saving paper and cash handling.  Please place your order by Friday 13th November.

Blessings,

Chappy Jenny

Speech Contest Update

The judging has finished for the EP & MLTAQ State Languages Speech Contest. The results are currently being uploaded. This could take some time as there were over 1600 students who entered from over 200 schools.

Once the results are made available I will let the students who participated know and organise a time to present these on Assembly. Congratulations on giving your best effort to the speech contest. You have done Yeronga State School (YSS) proud just by putting your best foot forward and entering. We look forward to finding out the results!

Gala Day 2 - Softball

The softball/t-ball boys did our school proud playing well within the spirit of the game and conducting themselves with distinction. The t-ballers were ruthless in their execution scoring runs seemingly at will and keeping it tight in the field. Amongst the runs with the bat were Archie, Bowman, Sonny and Roland.

The softballers struggled manfully and were unlucky not to win every game especially against Runcorn who were able to make the most of the longer game. The top scorers on the day were Otto and Rupert while  Hamish, Finn, Roland and Ethan were attentive in the field. Our pitching shared among five players was very good with Mitchell being the most consistent performer.

Well done boys.

Gala Day 2 - AFL

The boys and girls AFL teams had a wonderful day on Friday. The cloud cover kept the temperature down and thankfully there was no rain. The Senior Girls’ team remained undefeated for the second gala day and continued to refine their skills and teamwork. Special mention to Libby who is making great progress with her skill development and scored her first goal! The Senior Boys A team won all three of their games. Special mention to Pierce who made some outstanding tackles and clearances and Keani who scored more than a handful of banana goals. Boys Senior B team and the Boys’ and Girls’ Junior teams continue to develop their knowledge of the game and improve their skills. We are all looking forward to gala day 3 this Friday!

Picture1.jpg

Gala Day 2 - Netball

The girls put in a fantastic effort on their second gala day. In the first two games, the girls played against older and more experienced players and used the opportunity to learn from their opposition. It was great to see the girls’ persistence and grit in these games and I was so proud to see them encouraging each other all the way through. The last game of the day was a cracker! The girls used all they had learnt from the first two games and achieved a very convincing win. I can’t wait to see what happens in Game 3!!

Gala Day 2 - Touch Football Report

Over the past two Fridays, the seven Yeronga State School Touch Football teams ventured out to Runcorn High School to participate in Gala Day 2 and 3. All teams demonstrated significant improvement in both attack and defence. It was great to see many of the teams organising substitutes and team tactics. We had mixed results across the 2 days. The Junior Girls and Senior A Girls both finished third in their division. Our highest placed team was the Senior A Boys that finished second. Most importantly, the students demonstrated a very high standard of sportsmanship.  Finally, a big thank you to all the coaches and managers.

Gala Day 3 - AFL

Last Friday was our final Gala Day for 2020. Our Senior Girls team won every game convincingly and took the senior Girls’ title. The Senior A Boys fought hard but just missed out on claiming the title. The Junior A Boys had a wonderful day, winning three matches and winning the Junior Boys Competition. The Junior Girls and Junior B Boys played well and improved their skills over the three days. Congratulations to all our year 6 students who have participated in Gala Days for the last two or three years. Good luck with your future sporting endeavours.

Tennis News

Monday 2 November 2020 saw a team of 16 YSS ‘RISE-trained’ tennis players gather for the Primary School Challenge at the Pat Rafter Queensland Tennis Centre. The outdoor courts were a hive of activity as our students competed in a range of singles and doubles modified matches against the other schools - BBC, Figtree Pocket, Brookfield and Ironside. Our students were ably guided by tennis coaches Georgia and Tamie.

Terrific tennis talent was on show as all our skills were trialled. There was a busy Barty buzz when we realised that our very own Aussie number 1 Ash was also training on Show Court 2, just near us. The sounds of her returns echoed across the arena.

Lots of water, sunscreen and hats were the order of the day as potential storm clouds rolled in above us, but an afternoon breeze kept things cool.

Playing highlights included Ned winning his early match 4-3 against BBC and great sportsmanship all around. A special mention goes out to Sam and Matthew for their on-court skill application. Everyone had lots of fun and showed self-management while at the venue, collaboration in doubles plus resilience and determination in new and challenging situations.

What a terrific day was spent proudly representing our school.

Athletics Trial Information

Running Club

Running club has re-commenced this term, Mondays and Tuesdays 3:15 – 3:45,  but only students whose parents can collect or deliver them, in person or through YOSHC, should attend. This condition is necessary to ensure the safety of the children. Mr Sutherland has also re-commenced his sessions. They are held on Friday mornings from 7:45 to 8:15. Don’t forget that the afternoon sessions, in particular, are subject to temperature maximums. High and uncomfortable temperatures and humidity will result in cancellation.

School Swimming

School swimming lessons have commenced, for Prep to Year 6, at Yeronga Park Pool. Lessons will continue until the end of week 7 ( week ending 20 November). Please note that there will only be four weeks as lessons are unable to be held in week 5 ( from 2 to 6 November). A big thank you to Yeronga Park Pool for their cooperation in organising and teaching lessons to our Prep to Four students and for the use of the complex for our carnivals, free of charge, and our behaviour celebrations at a very friendly price.

Please send your child with all of the appropriate equipment. These items are noted on the swimming information which will be released this week.

Athletics Record Breaker

Oliver C has waited quietly for his turn, while watching others receive their certificates, at a record breaking attempt. Well I am glad to report that the wait was worthwhile. Almost two weeks ago he took the record for 9 years boys discus from the impressive 18.94m set by Hunter S last year to 19.1m. I am glad so many people have attempted these records this year. It makes up for some of the disappointment of the impacts from COVID in representative sport. It has and continues to be fun working with you.

Swimming Carnivals

I’m sure most know that the most pervasive factor in organising any event this year and into the foreseeable future is signified by the five letters COVID. Once again, as a measure to ensure continuing public health, we have to alter our usual practices. Unfortunately neither the school nor the Yeronga Park Pool complex can allow parental spectators to attend these events. However I will again need parents to help out in timing at the senior (years 3 to 6) carnival and to help marshall and start races in the junior carnivals for years 1 and 2. There will be special operating procedures for these people inside the complex which I will pass onto them before the event. If you wish to help at these events please email me cbate12@eq.edu.au . Remember that places will be limited.

Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)

As part of the “road map” out of COVID representative sport dates have now been released. Please do look below if your child is interested in any of the sports listed.

Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)

The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions.  Selectors  will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.

In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

Rebel Sport Community Givebacks

Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased cricket equipment, Footballs and Netballs with this credit. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself.

Important Sporting Dates 2020

- YSS Senior Swimming Carnival 1 December

- YSS Junior Swimming Carnival 3 December

- Prep Behaviour Celebration 8 December

- Year One Behaviour Celebration 7 December

- Year Two Behaviour Celebration 7 December

NAIDOC Week 2020

The 8-15 of November 2020 marks NAIDOC Week, a time to come together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

At Yeronga State School, we will be celebrating NAIDOC through acknowledgments of country, in class activities and free dress day on Friday 13th November, where students are encouraged to dress in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flag colours.

This year’s NAIDOC theme is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ recognising that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years and are spiritually and culturally connected to this country.

Yuggera word of the week:

‘Dhagun’ (Dhar-gun) – Ground. This week we acknowledge the traditional owners of the land and ‘Dhagun’ on which Yeronga State School is built. Always was, always will be Yuggera country.

What is Kalari?

Kalari means ‘message stick’ in Yuggera language and is name of the YSS Indigenous Working Group.

Kalari aims to increase the acknowledgement and celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history at YSS, through an inclusion of Indigenous perspectives and in line with the YSS school values.

Kalari is made up of Indigenous and non-Indigenous volunteer parents and anyone can join! For more information or to get involved about contact Aren Healy at mamaaren101@gmail.com.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC RECRUITMENT

By the end of this week, all of the Year 2 and 3 students who completed the online SchoolZine agreement and handed in a permission form to consent to physical testing will have been through the physical testing process with either Mrs Rosewarne or Mrs Eastgate. Students will be notified by the end of next week (by November 13) as to if they have been accepted into the Instrumental Music program in 2021.

Thank you all so much for assistance with our amended recruiting process this year as we learn how to work around the current COVID restrictions. It’s definitely been a learning curve for all of us!

BIG SING AND BIG PLAY

In order to accommodate for social distancing with our audience numbers, we have had to split the Big Play into two concerts – Strings Big Play and Band Big Play. Please take note of the following dates, venues and times. More information will be sent to you about these concerts soon (including how to book tickets for this event):

  • Wednesday, November 18 – Strings Big Play (Stradivari Strings, Brandenburg Strings, Chamber Strings) @ Yeronga State School Hall (note that the Strings concert is NOT at the High School):

- Junior Strings – arrive 5:30 for a 6:00pm start

- Senior Strings – arrive 6:30 for a 7:00pm start

  • Friday, November 20 – Band Big Play (Senior Band, Junior Band) @Yeronga State High School Auditorium
  • Friday, November 27 – Big Sing (Senior Choir, Junior Choir) @ Yeronga State High School Auditorium

All current members of each ensemble are expected to attend their concert in full dress uniform and each performing family is permitted to bring a maximum of 2 audience members.

Yours in Music,

In week 5, the Chamber Strings ensemble had the privilege of a visit from renowned strings educator Natalie Sharp.  Natalie ran a very engaging rehearsal and worked with the ensemble on developing refined ensemble skills including breathing together and listening more closely to each other.

Congratulations to the following band students for being accepted into the Primary State Honours Ensemble Program: Annabelle Abrahams, Edward Bowles, Lizzie Hooper, Sam Johansen and Jude McFarlane. Congratulations!

also to the following strings students who were accepted into the Middle School State Honours Ensemble Program: Darcy Appleton and Brian Zheng.  Hundreds of students apply to participate in these programs each year and this will be an amazing experience for these students.

Yeronga State School will be celebrating NAIDOC week this year through a free dress day.  On Friday the 14th November, all children can wear the colours Red, Black and Yellow and bring a gold coin donation.  All donations will go  towards “Seed”

Seed is Australia’s first Indigenous youth climate network.

“We are building a movement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people for climate justice with the Australian Youth Climate Coalition.  Our vision is for a just and sustainable future with strong cultures and communities, powered by renewable energy.  Climate change is one of the greatest threats facing humanity, but we also know it is an opportunity to create a more just and sustainable world.”
