Kalari – Celebrating Indigenous culture at YSS
NAIDOC Week 2020
The 8-15 of November 2020 marks NAIDOC Week, a time to come together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
At Yeronga State School, we will be celebrating NAIDOC through acknowledgments of country, in class activities and free dress day on Friday 13th November, where students are encouraged to dress in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flag colours.
This year’s NAIDOC theme is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ recognising that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years and are spiritually and culturally connected to this country.
Yuggera word of the week:
‘Dhagun’ (Dhar-gun) – Ground. This week we acknowledge the traditional owners of the land and ‘Dhagun’ on which Yeronga State School is built. Always was, always will be Yuggera country.
What is Kalari?
Kalari means ‘message stick’ in Yuggera language and is name of the YSS Indigenous Working Group.
Kalari aims to increase the acknowledgement and celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history at YSS, through an inclusion of Indigenous perspectives and in line with the YSS school values.
Kalari is made up of Indigenous and non-Indigenous volunteer parents and anyone can join! For more information or to get involved about contact Aren Healy at mamaaren101@gmail.com.
