Dear Families
Welcome to Term 2 at Yeronga State School. A term of exciting academic and socialand emotional progress for our students. Please be sure to read the inserts by our teaching and learning team in this newsletter. I was delighted to host our Regional Director and Assistant Regional Director on Wednesday. Yeronga State School is well known in the region for its excellent curriculum and inquiry approach to engaging students as 21st century learners and citizens whilst developing outstanding literacy, numeracy, thinking and social and emotional skills. The feedback was excellent.
It was with great pride I join our students, staff and families to commemorate ANZAC Day at school on Friday 23 and Sunday 25. This is the most formal of occasions on our school calendar and one I am always so humbled by. I could not feel more proud to accompany our respectful and reflective young people as we pay our respects to all those who have and continue to serve with their lives in the armed services. Lest we forget.
You may have seen some of the concept images for the new Administration and Teaching and Learning block shared via the PandC and MP Mark Bailey’s Facebook pages last week. I am excited to share information once it is finalised so that you can join in the transformation journey. It is anticipated that Phase 1 (lower level) will be completed by the end of the school year. Given the proximity of the building to the walkways and school site, there will be changes to the way we have become accustomed to moving about the school site. You will start to see fencing going up as of next week. Please take the time to read the details in this newsletter as there will be important changes impacting on the YOSHC pick up and drop off areas. The STOP DROP and GO should not be impacted, however, it is always a safer option to park and walk than use the 2 Minute Zone simply due to the high volume of cars and children in such close proximity. We can never be too vigilant!
Last term each student should have received an invitation to submit an artwork to the 150th Principal’s Art Archive- Children of Yeronga State School One me, one world. The visual arts are a powerful tool for documenting and foregrounding the ideas, values and voice of children in society. In recognition of the many young artists who have had their early artistic practice nurtured and celebrated over the past 150 years and in the years to come, I have launched the Principal’s Visual Art Archive. This archive will be a collection of visual art produced by children of Yeronga State School in this 150th year, to be held in trust for future generations to view, ponder and marvel. All students enrolled at the school in 2021 are encouraged to contribute. All art and completed forms to be submitted to the Principal via the school administration office by 1 May 2021. Please see documents attached to this newsletter with entry information.
I look forward to seeing you at many of our upcoming community events and thank you for your ongoing support as we together, continue to make Yeronga State School a great school!
Have a great week,
Eunice Webb

Curiosity and Powerful Learning – School visits
Yeronga State School is fortunate enough to be part of a Curiosity and Powerful Learning Cluster network. As part of this network teachers are able to visit other schools and see common areas of work put into practice. On Tuesday 4 May, we will host a school visit sharing session. This will allow our students and teachers to showcase the learning that has taken place with Cam Brooks and Assessment For Learning. We look forward to sharing how far we have come in this space and receiving feedback about how we can continue to build on what is working well.

Hi everyone
It’s been a lovely start to my time here at Yeronga State School. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the students and have had the pleasure of spending time celebrating student learning in classrooms. This week, class 5TW shared their creative sculptures with me. Students have created their own creatures as part of the inquiry unit “Ultimate Survivors”. Students have considered survival features of many animals to create their own. Well done 5TW!

Mothers Day Stall: Back in 2021 – 7 May – Call for donations
We are delighted to announce the return of our much loved Mother's Day stall on 7 May after a hiatus last year due to the covid lockdown.
The stall will be held on Friday 7 May. In preparation we ask each child to please bring in a gift for the stall (of approximately $5 in value). This should be handed in to the classroom teacher as soon as possible. It is the wonderful variety of donated gifts that makes our stall so special, a little like a giant lucky dip for our children choosing a gift for their mums and special adults. If you don’t have time to shop, you are welcome to make a $5 donation to the stall - sealed in an envelope marked Mother’s Day Stall and placed into the P&C Payment Box in the Grade 1 building, or hand in to the Tuckshop or YOSHC office - so P&C volunteers can go shopping on your behalf. On the day of the stall students can then purchase a special gift from the stall for $3. Please email Kristen at kristenmjennings@gmail.com if you have any questions or would like to help on the stall.Term 2 Tuckshop update
In response to community feedback the Tuckshop team has introduced some great new menu items, including gluten free and vegan options:
- gluten free pies, sausage rolls and pizza
- vegan chick pea and cous cous salad
- spaghetti bolognaise.
A new Celebration Class Bucket of icy poles will also be available to order from week 2 to make it easy for families to provide a special treat for their children's class for celebrations like birthdays. These can be ordered via Flexischools (underneath frozen items). To keep pace with the rising cost of ingredients and menu items, there will also be some small price increases added to several menu items in term 2. The P&C aims to ensure the Tuckshop menu is affordable for our community and our wonderful volunteers help to keep costs as low as possible. Our last price increase was early 2019 and the new prices will ensure the Tuckshop continues as a sustainable service for our community. The Tuckshop is open Tuesday (still trialling in term 2) to Friday and orders can be made via Flexischools (orders close 8.00am) or at the Tuckshop counter until 9.00am.If you'd like to volunteer in the Tuckshop, like Ben below, please email Stacey and Yvonne at tuckshop@yerongasspandc.org.au.School parent, Ben, volunteering in the Tuckshop putting the final touches on the new spagetti bolognaise menu itemUniform Shop opening times: Change during public holiday weeks

At the P&C's Special General Meeting on 25 March members voted to support the purchase of two timpani drums for the instrumental music program. Costing up to $10,800 these special drums will add depth and balance to the school ensembles, enhancing the quality of the band program and also the repertoire available for ensembles for at least the next 20-plus years. The drums will also support percussion students to meet their learning and assessment guidelines set out by Education Qld Instrumental Music Curriculum and prepare them for high school music. We can't wait to see and hear the drums in action at school band performances!

Welcome back to term 2
Last term ended abruptly, but I still managed to squeeze in the Chappy Week Treasure Hunt before the lockdown commenced! Thank you for your support once again in my fundraising efforts. Let’s hope we have a great term ahead with limited interruptions, and that all our regular activities that are planned go ahead as scheduled.
This term I am facilitating the “Friends for Life” program with all year 4 classes, helping students to develop further skills in friendship and dealing with anxiety. It is a great program and timely given that year 4 camp is early next term. I will also help the Year 6 Bridge Builders to get up and running, so that they can support staff in the junior school during playtime.
Setup for Success
It’s never too late to put practices in place that will help your family cope with the demands of school. One practice that I find many families struggle with is keeping a routine around sleep and bedtime. Children’s Health Qld recommend that school-aged children have between 9-11 hours of sleep each night. That means if wake-up time is 7am, bed-time could be as early as 7:30pm. A regular routine will make it easier to manage the ongoing battle of going to bed. I encourage each family to create their own routine that works for them, and that includes time for doing chores, cleaning teeth, reading, cuddles and lights out at the agreed set time.

Welcome Back
This term is busy in all areas of the curriculum and is the busiest of the year for PE and Sport. Please peruse the dates below as there are many important events.
Running Club
Running club will continue this term on Tuesdays, from 3:15 to 3:45 and Thursdays from 7:45 to 8:15. Mr Sutherland will hold his sessions on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:15. Remember that all of these sessions will occur on the main, or years 3-6, oval.
Yeronga State School Athletics Trials
The term two PE and sport focus is athletics. As part of our process the year 3 to 6 students will be involved in athletics trials to find those who will compete in field event finals on championship day and push for district selection as well. Please remember that although 8 year old students will compete in the athletics trials this year they will not be involved in championship (field event) day, only running events on race day. The rotations are contained in the table below.

Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)
The trial dates for term two of 2021 are listed below.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
Rebel Sport Community Givebacks
Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased cricket equipment, Footballs and Netballs with this credit. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself. Thanks to all of those who purchased at Rebel over the break. We have a very useful amount for equipment.
