Welcome back to school
2020 is off to an excellent start. I extend a sincere thank you to all staff, students and parents for the many ways you helped set up for a successful year. The school routines have been adopted quickly and everyone is busy doing their best with the learning challenges being provided.
A special welcome to a number of new staff: Ms Felicia Chapman (Yr 1), Mrs Emma Moller (Yr 1), Mrs Clarissa Fraser (Yr 1), Mr Cameron Peterson (Yr 1), Mrs Tammy McNeil (Yr 1), Miss Jessica Watkins (Yr 2), Mr Luke Marchment (Yr 2). Welcome back to Mr Aaron Hartin (Yr 5) and Miss Louise Vaggs (Deputy Principal- Acting). We know you will be an asset to our Yeronga SS team.
A special welcome to our new families as well. I look forward to meeting many of the new Prep families at the Prep Picnic this coming Saturday. Thank you to our P&C Executive for doing such a fantastic job of coordinating this forthcoming event.
2020 SCHOOL PRIORITIES
Last week I had the privilege of spending 3 days of professional development and learning with school staff. The level of commitment and dedication staff have to the school improvement agenda and wanting the best for every child is awe inspiring and I feel honoured to lead such a fabulous team. The positive energy, level of collaboration, cooperation and professionalism demonstrated by all meant that we have laid a great foundation to keep striding towards our vision in 2020.
Emphasise Inquiry Focussed Teaching
- Curiosity and Powerful Learning Whole School Theory of Action
- Prep, 5&6- Multi- Disciplinary Inquiry Units
- Year 1-4 – HASS, Science, Design or Digital Technology Inquiry Units
Using Assessment for Learning (A4L) to deepen our Inquiry Stance
- Inquiry
- Maths – Creating Courageous and Resilient Mathematical Thinkers
- Writing
Creating a Connected Community
- High Expectations and Authentic Relationships
- Creating a caring environment – children looking after each other and the natural environment
- Promoting Active and Proactive Leadership – school level, classroom level, teacher and students
- Communication Techniques
- Consistency of expectations
Our priorities this year are continuing with the journey towards our 2020 vision of Connected Individuals, Curious Learners and Community Minded Citizens. Staff will continue to engage in professional learning activities to help develop their capacity in these areas.
The School Parent partnership is a vital one and we know that strong, supportive and positive home school partnerships impact on academic and social and emotional well-being. I encourage you to check the school calendar for the many opportunities coming up this term to build a strong partnership. Reading the fortnightly school newsletter will also help you keep abreast of the many happenings in our school. It is published each ‘odd’ week of term. I look forward to seeing many of you at the school gate or at Parent Information Evening in a few weeks.
School Narrative
Many families, staff and children communicate a positive narrative about how caring, inclusive, high achieving and innovative Yeronga State School is and how proud they are to attend here. A school’s narrative and individual teacher narratives, child or family narratives, are created by the stories we tell when we communicate with each other, face to face and on social media. This year I encourage everyone to continue to follow the school rule of being respectful to model positive, helpful interactions for our children.
In 2020 I would ask all of you to adopt an `assume the best’ mind set when you experience frustration with how things are being done. Make contact with the school office or myself, to seek clarification on why something is happening or not happening in a manner you would prefer. This will eliminate the negative energy that can be so draining and also honour the commitment of the many volunteers, staff and students who embrace the school’s `Service Before Self’ motto. We are so lucky to have such committed people working together to do their best for the school with the resources we have.
Parent Representatives
Our Parent Representative Scheme will continue this year as a way to support the class and connect children and parents in our school community. The role of the Parent Rep is to strengthen the parent-school partnership, create a welcoming class atmosphere for new families and promote parent involvement within our school.
Class teachers will be talking to parents over the next week or so, as they seek two parent representatives for their class. If you are interested in being a parent representative, please let your child’s class teacher know. Jodie Swan, our parent representative coordinator, will be holding an induction for class parent representatives on Monday in Week 3. Thank you in advance for your willingness to support the school community if you choose to take on this role for your class.
Parent e-mail addresses will be distributed to class parent representatives to form the class e-mail distribution list. Parents can choose to opt out by notifying their class representative after the first communication. E-mail addresses are not distributed to other class members parents as all e-mails are blind copied.
Roll on 2020
It was wonderful to observe the looks of joy on the faces of students this week, as they farewelled the school holidays and embraced the possibilities of the year ahead here at YSS. There is a real sense of hope, optimism and excitement around the corridors of our school. All the best to everyone in our school community for an amazing year ahead.
Kate Paynter
Acting Principal
2020 is off to a great start at Yeronga State School! In the past weeks our dedicated staff have been working to set up classrooms and grounds for the busy year ahead. We have welcomed many new staff and it has been great to catch up with colleagues after the summer break.
During the Student Free Days our staff engaged in a variety of professional development centred on curriculum, student welfare and setting up for success. This is a very important part of the school year as it sets our focus and helps us chart the year ahead. The breadth of knowledge and experience of our staff, and willingness to learn from each other, was a pleasure to witness. Everyone is working hard together to ensure that learning, caring, growing and achieving continue to evolve at Yeronga.
Assembly News
Assemblies commence in week one and are held each week (alternating between senior and junior schools). These are a wonderful opportunity for parents and the school community to come together and hear about the happenings in our school.
This year we will continue to operate our weekly assembly as two groups:
Seniors (Year 3 – Year 6) – Thursday 1.45pm (odd weeks)
Juniors (Prep – Year 2) – Thursday 1.45pm (even weeks)
Community members are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you there.
Parent Information Evenings
During Week 3 and 4 we will be holding parent information sessions to provide an opportunity for parents to find out year level specific information for the year ahead. Details are as follows:
- Junior School (P-2) 6pm Wednesday 12 February
- Senior School (Yr 3-6) 6pm Wednesday 19 February
Parent Information Evenings are an opportunity to build relationships between school and home and to hear information about the year ahead. Topics to be discussed include school
priorities, Curiosity and Powerful Learning, communication between parents and teachers, home learning, year level curriculum, BYOD (Year 2,3 & 4), leadership opportunities (Year 5 and 6), camps and excursion information, assessment, reporting and NAPLAN information (Year 3 and 5).
Before and After School Arrangements
All students who are not attending Yeronga Outside School Hours Care (YOSHC) should aim to arrive after 8:30am. If students arrive between 8:15am – 8:30am they need to sit under C Block to read or talk quietly. No students should be in the school grounds before 8:15am. Parents who need to drop students at school before 8:15am need to enrol in YOSHC. It is a great safety concern to have children who are unsupervised in the school grounds. YOSHC is open every morning from 7am.
After school all students need to be collected by parents/carers at 3pm. Students remaining at school after 3pm must be with a teacher (e.g. sports training), their parent or attending YOSHC.
Parents who are later than 3:15pm collecting their children, will need to collect them from the school office. Please note that the school office closes at 3:30pm. All student and parents who are not part of the YOSHC program need to have left the school grounds no later than 4pm.
We understand that family life often involves unexpected changes to routines. We appreciate the efforts our families make to manage their schedule to work within these times and thank you for your understanding around this very important safety matter.
Help keep our children safe
For your child’s safety please ensure that students only enter the school grounds via the pedestrian gates (not the through any of the car parks). Cars are not to park in the school grounds. Street parking is available for parents. We also have a 2 minute – Stop, Kiss and Go area on Park Road.
The safety of our students is our priority, as these spaces have continual vehicle movement it is imperative that no student, even with and adult, walk through these areas. We thank you for your assistance in keeping our school a safe place to learn, grow and have fun.
Active School Travel
Active School Travel will start off next week with an AST breakfast. Actively travel to school Wednesday 5 February, get your passport stamped and then join us for breakfast from 8:15am outside the tuckshop area. A special thanks to Nicole Johnston and the team for helping us to kick off Active School Travel in 2020 with a breakfast.
If you actively travel to school please remember to bring your child to get their AST passport stamped. Prep children will have their passport delivered to the room, new students to the school can collect their passport from the office, junior school passports will be at the lower school stamping station (L Block – outside Year 1 building) and students in the upper school will have their passports from last year. The students who have moved from the lower school to the upper school will have their passports delivered to their classrooms.
If you are a parent who is passionate about our community actively travelling to school please email Tracy Freeman tfree19@eq.edu.au to express your interest.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION -CHICKENPOX CASES
We have been advised that there have been some cases of Chickenpox in our school community. Please find below information regarding Chickenpox as issued by the Department of Health.
Signs and Symptoms:
The disease starts with cold-like symptoms such as a mild fever, headache, runny nose and cough. A day or two later a rash begins, starting as small pink blotches but rapidly progressing to itchy blisters which usually last three to four days before drying out and turning into scabs.
Transmission:
Chickenpox is spread through coughing, sneezing and direct contact with the fluid in the blisters of the rash. The dry scabs are not infectious. An individual with Chickenpox is infectious for about one to two days before the onset of the rash and until the blisters have all scabbed, usually four to five days.
Exclusion from School (if infected):
Exclude until all blisters have dried. This is usually at least five days after the rash first appeared in non-immunised children, and less in immunised children.
If you suspect that your child has Chickenpox please advise the school office.
Yeronga SS is now Cashless in 2020
As Yeronga continues to grow the office does it’s best to make changes to ensure parents can conveniently pay for excursions/incursion is the most efficient way possible. This means as of this year (2020) Yeronga will no longer be accepting cash payments.
Our methods of payments will be via BPoint or Qparents.
To pay via BPoint you will find all the needed details at the bottom of every invoice. All invoices are emailed to parents and will come from the email address rbenn127@eq.edu.au.
Qparents is another great way to pay your invoices as well as track what you have paid and what is still outstanding. If you do not have access to Qparents please contact the office as soon as possible and we will be able to set you up with an invitation.
Payments - Incursions & Excursions
Thank you to all the Year 4 parents who have paid for the Year 4 Big Bang incursion that will be held on Monday 3 February.
We would like to make all families aware that if the invoice for Big Bang has not been paid in full by Friday (tomorrow) your student may not be able to attend the incursion. Other arrangements will be made for them during the incursion time.
QParents - Invitations
To all parents who do not have access to QParents. Next week we will arrange for invitations to QParents to be sent to families who currently do not have access to the system.
Please note: Initial set up must be done on a desk top and not a mobile device or ipad. You will need 100 points of ID to complete the registration. If you do not have that please complete what you can and the school will be able to help complete the rest.
If you have any questions or need support please email nlang67@eq.edu.au.
Communication through SZapp
Yeronga communicates extensively through the SZapp, we encourage all parents to download this free app. If you do not have this on mobile device yet please download and follow the instructions below to get access to this handy app.
If you already use the SZapp please don't forget to update your notifications. Your students will be in a new year level group and may now be involved in music and other activites. Below is where you can change your notification groups. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact the office.
Welcome Cameron Petersen
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
I became a teacher because I looked up to so many of my teachers growing up, and I was inspired to make children as curious and enthusiastic about learning as I was.
What other schools have you worked at or where else have you taught?
I've worked at Richlands East State School for three years teaching Year One.
Who is in your family? What do you like to do together?
I have two older brothers, a wonderful Mother and a larrikin Father. We love spending time outdoors and getting together for a Sunday meal.
What do you like to do on the weekend?
On the weekend I spend most of time kickboxing, or I'm in the gym being active. Between that you can find me with my lovely girlfriend or hanging out with my cat.
Where is the most exciting place you have visited?
The most exciting place I've been would be Bangkok, Thailand. I went there on a training holiday with my gym and trained alongside some of the best Muay Thai fighters in Thailand. By no means was I able to keep up, but it was a phenomenal experience nonetheless.
Welcome Luke Marchment
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
Getting kids excited about coming to school and learning new things has always appealed to me.
What other schools have you worked at or where else have you taught?
This is my first year as an official teacher which has me really excited. My last two practicums were at St Laurence’s College in South Bank and Patrick’s Road State School in Ferny Grove.
Who is in your family? What do you like to do together?
I live with my wife Lianah (the wedding was on the 9th), her brother and two mini poodles; Henry and Loki. We like to go on big walks and road trips together.
What do you like to do on the weekend?
I love playing tennis and Chess. I often drive down to Ballina/Byron to catch up with family and friends.
Where is the most exciting place you have visited?
Rome. Easily. I was only there for two days when I was 15. From what I remember, I was bombarded on all sides by excitement. The food, the old buildings, the empire, the hand gestures, and all of the stuff I wanted to do. There just wasn’t enough time and I will have to go back some day.
Welcome Clarrisa Fraser
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
I love the journey of seeing children work toward their potential.
What other schools have you worked at or where else have you taught?
Autism Queensland, Ipswich West State School, Indooroopilly State School, Graceville State School and Westside Christian College.
Who is in your family? What do you like to do together?
My husband Chris and I have 3 energetic daughters. We love going for bush walks in the forest behind our house.
What do you like to do on the weekend?
I am a big participant of parkrun and celebrated my 100th this time last year! We also love camping and exploring new places.
Where is the most exciting place you have visited?
Mt Kilimanjaro! We hiked this on a delayed honeymoon. Seeing the shimmering glacier at dawn on summit day after hiking ‘pole, pole’ (slowly, slowly) from midnight was an incredible experience.
Welcome Jessica Watkins
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
I became a teacher because I think children are the best people with their honesty, love and curiosity. I had a few really amazing teachers that really listened and cared about me, and made my life better by doing so, and I hope to be that teacher for my students.
What other schools have you worked at or where else have you taught?
I have come from Lockhart State School, in a remote indigenous community in Far North Qld, where the children fished and hunted for their own food and rode horses bareback around town. I taught grade 3 and 4 with class sizes around 13 students who were all cousins, not just with each other, but almost all the other kids in the school.
Who is in your family? What do you like to do together?
My partner, Laura, and I are expecting our first child any day now so we’re very happy to be back in Brisbane with our extended families.
What do you like to do on the weekend?
I used to work as a Tour guide in Alice Springs and I love doing anything outside - bush walking, swimming and camping. I’ve recently taken up running and paddle boarding.
Where is the most exciting place you have visited?
What I consider to be exciting about the different places at home and around the world would be their beauty. So in saying that the some of the most beautiful places I have visited include; Zion National park in Utah, the Larapinta Trail just outside of Alice Springs and Sierra Nevada in Spain.
Welcome Felicia Chapman

I have always loved working with children (and love stationery!!)

On behalf of the Yeronga State School Parents and Citizens Association (P&C), we wish all new and returning families a big welcome, a terrific start to the school year, and an awesome 2020!
We also invite you to get involved in our school community in whatever way appeals to you. To help you do this we have created the Yeronga SS P&C website and Facebook page. These help you to stay on top of all P&C and key school activities throughout the year. Please 'like' us on Facebook so we can keep you as up to date as possible with key activities for your kids and you.
A great way to see the myriad of ways you can get involved throughout the year is our 'Just One Thing' survey. This offers an easy way for you to nominate the activity/ies you would like to support - simply tick the option/s that appeal to you, enter your details and submit. You can also read more about 'Just One Thing' below.
Prep Welcome Picnic
The Prep Welcome Picnic is on this Saturday, 1 February, from 9:00-11:00am in the prep playground area. Welcome to new P&C Operations Manager
The P&C warmly welcomes Sarah Cordingley to the new P&C Operations Manager role, which has been created to ensure the continued sustainability, quality and growth of the P&C and its operations (Tuckshop, Uniform Shop, YOSHC, extracurricular activities, and fundraising and community building activities).
Sarah officially starts on Monday, 3 February, and will be familiar to many within our school community as she is a current parent, and also ably coordinated our extracurricular activities during the second half of 2019 as P&C Administrator.
Prior to taking on the Operations Manager role, Sarah has more than 15 years' experience supporting and managing teams in large banking corporations and small businesses. Sarah was offered the role following a merit-based selection process through which the P&C received several high quality applications. The P&C Exec team looks forward to working with Sarah (and the Presidents are looking forward to getting a few more hours' sleep each week! :-) ).
Introducing our new YSS Tuckshop team for 2020
We are delighted to welcome Stacey Resetti who is stepping up as Tuckshop Convenor (from her previous role assisting immediate past Convenor, Tracy), and Yvonne Starr as Assistant Convenor (who is also our Uniform Shop Convenor).
Tuckshop re-opens for business in on Wednesday, 5 February, 2020 - week 2 of term 1. Prep students will be able to order from week 3, term 1 (and from term 2 will be able to order frozen items).
Stacey and Yvonne would love to hear from you if you have a couple of hours you would like to volunteer for the Tuckshop during term 1 - from 9.00-11.00am on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, or if you are able to bake some ever-popular choc chip muffins.
It is easy to let us know how you'd like to support the Tuckshop via our 2020 Just One Thing survey - volunteering in the Tuckshop is a great way to meet other parents and carers and it's lots of fun!
From Stacey: "Let's make some sandwiches, cook some sausage rolls and choc chip muffins, and have some fun along the way. I'm sure 2020 will be one rippa of a year."
Flexischools is the preferred Tuckshop ordering method, however we will accept bag orders over the counter before 845am - cash only. Sushi can only be ordered on Flexischools and must be ordered by 1pm the day before.
To contact the Tuckshop team please email yerongasstuckshop@gmail.com.
Uniform Shop update
Our Uniform Shop has experienced higher than usual demand for uniforms over the past two weeks which led us to run out of some sizes of formal uniform items. New stock has been ordered but some items may take several weeks to arrive.
If this has caused any issues with uniforms for your child/ren during the first weeks of school please contact the school office and they will work with the Uniform Shop to find a solution for you. Please accept our apologies if you have been affected.
Also, if you have any second hand uniform items you no longer need we will be most thankful if you could please drop them to the Uniform Shop to help families source the items they need in the interim (uniform shop opening times below). Smaller sizes are especially needed. Thank you so much to everyone who has already generously donated second hand items - your support is sincerely appreciated!
Uniform Shop opening times for the rest of this week are:
- Thursday, 30 January: 8.30-9.30am AND 2.30-3.30pm
- Friday, 31 January: 8.30-9.30am.
- Saturday, 1 February: Limited items will be sold at the Prep BBQ, 9.00-11.00am.
After week 1 of the school year, normal Uniform Shop opening hours for the year will be as follows during school terms:
- Monday 8.30am – 9.30am
- Thursday 2.30pm – 3.30pm.
You are also welcome to order via Flexischools for delivery to your child's classroom throughout the year.

P&C AGM: Tuesday, 18 February, 2020
The YSS P&C Executive team invites all parents and members of our school community to the 2020 P&C AGM on Tuesday, 18 February, at 6:00pm, in the school Resource Centre (library).
The P&C Executive team overseas P&C businesses and activities throughout the school year. Executive positions include President, Vice President (usually 2 or 3 people hold this position), Treasurer and Minutes Secretary. There is also potential for a number of non executive positions including correspondence secretary and events coordinators. See the 'P&C Committee roles' page on the P&C website for more information, and contact us at yerongasspandc@gmail.com if you would like more information around roles and responsibilities.
At the 2020 AGM we particularly need to appoint a new P&C Treasurer. Please let us know if you are interested in this, or any other committee role - we'd love to hear from you. In accordance with the P&Cs QLD Constitution, all nominations for executive positions should be received in writing prior to the AGM, via the P&C Executive Officer Nomination Form - please email your completed form to yerongasspandc@gmail.com.
The 2020 AGM will be followed by our first general meeting of the year.
P&C meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month (except December and January) at 7:00pm in the school Resource Centre (library).
2020 P&C Membership
All 2019 memberships will lapse at the AGM. We've made it easy for you to join the P&C or renew your membership via our online 2020 Membership form (ideally before 18 February).
It only takes a minute (or less) to complete - just completing the form to become a member helps and there is no obligation to attend meetings (although we'd love to see you if you're able). Membership numbers help us with grant applications and allows us to keep you updated with copies of monthly minutes.
What's your 'Just One Thing' for the school this year?
The P&C is committed to ensuring every family has the opportunity to get involved and experience our active and friendly community, which is one of the things that makes Yeronga State School such a great place. Our school is as strong as everyone’s contribution.
We invite every Yeronga SS family to nominate ‘Just One Thing’ during the school year to assist the P&C to make a big contribution to our kids and school, via our Just One Thing survey. There are many different ways you can help to make our school great, big and small. It only takes a couple of minutes to click on your 'One Thing' add your contact details and press 'Done' - easy!
Seeking school banking volunteers
The P&C sincerely thanks the three amazing parents who have coordinated our school banking program over the past seven years - Kristen, Kirsten and Mandy. Together these ladies have made countless deposits into Dollarmites accounts on behalf of YSS children and they have now stepped down from their school banking roles.
For the school banking program to continue at YSS we need three new volunteers to visit the school each week to collate the school banking and arrange the deposits into the children's bank accounts.
To volunteer for the school banking program please tick 'Pick me!' under School Banking (question 4) via our Just One Thing survey. Training will be provided by CBA and Kristen and Kirsten are more than happy to answer questions too.
P&C 2020-2023 Planning Survey closes 16 Feb: Have your say today!
Your views are important! All members of our school community are encouraged to have their say through the P&C 2020-2023 Planning Survey before the survey closes on Sunday, 16 February.
Please take a few minutes to complete the survey to help us meet your needs in 2020 and beyond. The information you share will help to shape the P&C's services, initiatives, activities, communications and priorities for the next 3 to 4 years.
ALL members of our school community are invited to participate (you don't need to be a member of the P&C to do the survey).
The generosity of our school community enables the P&C to provide significant financial support for infrastructure and resources to assist our children and school that wouldn’t be available through any other means. Your input through the survey will ensure the P&C continues to meet the needs of our school community well into the future.
Grill'd support for YSS to 31 January
Our school has been selected to participate in Local Matters at Grill’d Fairfield Gardens this January!
This is the Grill’d community donation program where Grill’d restaurants donate $500 back into the community every month. The donation is split between 3 local community groups $300 / $100 / $100. All funds raised for YSS through this initiative will help families who need support to cover back to school expenses.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: We'd love your support to receive the highest $300 donation! Simply head to Grill’d Fairfield Gardens by 31 January for a burger and pop your Local Matters token in the Yeronga State School jar. The group with the most tokens at the end of the month receives the largest donation. It’s a simple (and delicious) way to show your support!

Welcome back everybody. I hope the Summer Holidays were as exciting or as restful as you needed them to be.
Cross Country Training
Cross Country Training will begin week 3 with the climax being the School Cross Country on 10 March. Sessions will be on Mondays from 3:15 to 3:45 and Wednesdays from 7:45 to 8:15 with Mr Bateman and Fridays 7:45 to 8:15 with Mr Sutherland. These sessions are run free of charge.
A wise man said; “a run a day”. Not only has this maxim filled our trophy cabinets with district cross country trophies, but it has also meant that children wanting to participate in other sports had the baseline fitness that made those other sports easier and meant that coaches could concentrate on skills.
Gala Days
Gala Days are well and truly on the horizon. Options include Boys and Girls Football (What used to be called Soccer), Boys and Girls Basketball, Rugby League and Girls Softball and Teeball. The dates for these very important days are, weather permitting, 6 March, 27 March and 8 May. The sports offered will include Boys and Girls Football (Soccer), Girls’ Softball and Rugby League. Children need to start thinking seriously about which of these sports they would like to participate in as there will be a muster to canvas interest for the various sports.
Swimming
Swimming will begin in week 5 and finish in week 8 or 9 (a total of five weeks). It will be offered to years 1 to 6 students as we are no longer being affected by the National Athletics in Darwin. Students will need goggles, a bathing cap (No cap no swim), a rashie, togs, towel, sturdy bag, spare underwear & Flip Flops (thongs). These sessions provide high quality swimming instruction across the school. We will be implementing these lessons, in conjunction with the staff of Yeronga Park Pool for years 1 to 4. This means the instructors will take the lessons for all children from Year 1 to 4 to enhance those childrens’ competence in Aquatics. Not only are these children being given expert stroke correction in small ability specific groups, but also water safety knowledge and skills.
Thanks again to Yeronga Park Pool for its continued support. They not only discount our lessons, but also give us our carnivals and various play days free of charge.
The District Swimming Team
Our team for Districts has been finalised for the Eastern District Swimming Trial to be held on 12 February. Congratulations to:, Angus W, George N, Will G, Charlie V, George H, Hayden C, Dempsey Y, Saskia A, Samantha C, Abigail W, Eadie B, Georgie B, Matilda S, Lizzie H, Innes C, Willow H & Alex S. Expect the notes either late this week or early next week. Think carefully about whether you wish to nominate a time and therefore swim in the 100m events for your strokes as well as the 50m events.
Senior Cross Country Day 10 March (Reserve Day: 12 March)
As we have a chance of hot, humid weather continuing we have decided to maintain extra safeguards for the impacts of heat.
As well as having drinking water on course we have scheduled a reserve day. This date is noted above. If we deem the heat predicted on the set date to make it unsafe for our students to run then we will move the cross country to our reserve day. Unfortunately we will not be able to make a decision until we are very close to the set date due to the fickleness of the weather. If our reserve day proves to be unsuitable then we will look at a selection trial involving only those wishing to attend the District Cross Country with our School Cross being delayed until the weather becomes more Autumnal.
All children will be expected, unless medically unable, to participate in the Cross Country. The children who are 8 years old will run a smaller course inside the school grounds. The children who age from 9 to 12 years will be given the option of running a long course (outside the school grounds) or a short course (within the school grounds). Those who opt for the short course will be identified by a fluorescent vest they must wear. The difference between the course options is that the long course option allows children to qualify for the Yeronga State School team for the Eastern Taipans District Cross Country, to compete to be Age Champion and to more greatly help their sporting house’s total.
Please remember that the team for the Eastern Taipans District Cross Country will not be settled for a week or more after the Yeronga State School Cross Country as we may have a number of children absent on the day and our policy is to allow those either absent due to illness or higher representative honours the opportunity to be considered for a place in teams at a later date.

Absence From Cross Country
If you know that you will be absent from the Cross Country day and are keen to have a time recorded please see Mr Bateman so that this may be done before the 10th of March. If you are ill on the day you will need to collect a form from Mr Bateman to have a time recorded after the event to be considered for District Selection. We will be using the times of the top 8 in the 10, 11 and 12 year events for comparisons.
Cross Country Day Helpers
If you would like to volunteer time to help either as a check point attendant or a finish line official your help would be most appreciated. It is always great to have extra pairs of eyes and ears available. We have been blessed, for many years, with wonderful volunteers like Ruth Bennett. Thank you Ruth for so many great years of selfless service.
Rebel Sport Community Kickbacks
Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased cricket equipment, Footballs and Netballs with this credit. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

Welcome to 2020
It was great to see many new families at my Welcome Morning Tea on Tuesday. If we didn’t get to meet, please feel free to come and have a chat with me over the coming weeks. Some of the things I do as School Chaplain is to provide pastoral care, provide social, emotional and spiritual support, and meet welfare needs. I love being part of the wider Yeronga Community, and in particular supporting our students, their families and the staff of this great school.
There’s been many jokes and memes recently about having perfect vision (20-20) with the year being 2020. Humour aside, our children will be thinking through some of their goals for learning and behaviour for the year. It helps them to focus on what they want to achieve, and allows for regular reflection to keep on track for reaching those goals. So what vision do you have for your year? What goals do you have your eyes set on? How will you measure and reflect on how to reach them? Let me know if I can encourage or cheer you on this year as you seek greater vision for you and your family.
Volunteers
There are many ways to be connected at school, and a great way to do that includes volunteering your time to support the school community. The Chaplaincy Program gives many opportunities for volunteers to be connected and build friendships with other families, while being part of a great community service program. If you would like to be involved, please come and see me.
Coming up
25/2 Chappy Pancakes (7:30-8:30am) – a yum start to the day
10/3 “Sub and Drink Deal” Lunch
19/3 Harmony Day Assemblies
Blessings,
Jennifer Bennett
A new year brings new curiosities, challenges and exciting learning opportunities. We look to plan for opportunities to build learner capabilities and deep engagement in content as well as meaningful contexts for students to apply their learning.
Below is an outline of the conceptual understandings students in each year level will be working towards through inquiry. If you have expertise in any of these areas, please get in touch, we would love to involve you in our program.

Welcome Back to School and our Library
The Yeronga State School library is a well-stocked library and a well-used library. It was wonderful to see the students coming in and wanting to borrow books straight away. Our library serves as a hub for many students who come to borrow, run and attend clubs and activities. Students attend a 30 minute library learning session each week and also have a library borrowing session each week. Our two teacher librarians alternate terms so that we can share our skill set and knowledge with all students across the school. Faith Hage works in the library on Mondays and Wednesday and teachers students, research skills, inquiry skills and cybersafety. In term 1 Faith will be working with years 4 to 6, focusing on using research skills, such as note taking, assessing sources of information for validity and using these in the inquiry process. Debbie Cowie will be working with Prep to year three students teaching them library skills, and digital technologies with a specific focus on ICT and using ipads.
These are some of my favourite pictures from last year.

Happy Reading,
Mrs Cowie and Mrs Hage
Chess Mates is teaching at Yeronga State School!
Chess Mates specialises in teaching chess to children of all age groups and skill levels. Our team is dedicated to teaching chess in a fun and engaging way, so that children of any age can join in regardless of experience level. We teach younger students through songs and stories, for older or more advanced students we teach openings, strategies and forward planning. We don’t focus on winning (in fact, we teach kids how to deal with winning and losing). Instead, we focus on making new friends and having fun while learning.
Classes are held on Tuesday - Friday mornings 7:45 - 8:30, and Tuesday afternoon 3:15 - 4:00. The cost for the classes is $10 per lesson.
If you have any questions about the classes please either e-mail info@chessmates.com.au or call Ash on 0415 256 452.
