Triple P is a world-renowned program (developed in Queensland!) that has already helped more than 4 million children and their families, and is currently offered free of charge to Queensland parents and carers of children up to 16 years. Triple P also offers other seminars, group workshops and one-on-one consultations, as well as Triple P Online, Teen Triple P Online, and Fear-Less Triple P Online (web-based courses you do in your own time, at your own pace). There are also a range of Stepping Stones Triple P programs, which are tailored specifically for parents of a child with a disability. New Fear-Less Triple P helps parents of anxious children and teenagers.
Parent Café
Have you checked out Parent Café – every Tuesday morning in the junior school from 8:30am? Why not organise a catch up with a couple of other parents and get a free coffee or hot chocolate while you talk.
Handling Disappointment
There are always going to be times when we are disappointed, and unfortunately it happens for our children too. Maybe they didn’t do as well this week in the athletic’s carnival as they hoped, or they struggled academically across the term, or later in the year they might miss out on a coveted leadership position. In the earlier years, it is seen when children don’t get a toy they hoped for, or miss out on a special treat. Being able to cope with disappointment is a skill that we can develop, and resilience in this area is learnt progressively from the early years right through life.
As significant adults in their lives, it is important that we don’t shelter them from failure or discomfort, but instead provide love, guidance, and support through the difficult times of disappointment. You can help your children manage their disappointment by validating their feelings and agreeing that their heartbreak is upsetting, and helping them to engage with emotional regulation strategies (deep-breathing, listening to music, gratitude journaling, etc.) Remind them of how they have previously overcome disappointment, and encourage them by acknowledging the strengths and skills that are evident in their life, as well as positive character traits that they have used (persistence, determination, kindness, etc.)
Let’s help our students develop grit and resilience by facing their disappointments as they emerge, learning that it’s not the end of the world, and that there is so much more to hope for and enjoy in life.

Thank You to Mrs McGuire
A massive thank you to Mrs McGuire who not only taught all the PE lessons while I was away, but also eased me in on my return. She is a wonderful person to call on not only for her professionalism, but also for her dedication to our school. She always ensures our students have everything they need to succeed, which was a very tall order, even for Mrs McGuire, considering all of the rain that we had earlier in the term.
Thank You from Mr Bateman
Thank you for all of your kind comments during my recovery from surgery, that were passed on by Mrs McGuire, and following my return to work. It has been a longer journey than I expected to return to work, but your kind comments have made my return a great experience.
Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)
The trial dates for term one of 2022 are listed below.
District Sport and COVID
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC RECRUITMENT FOR 2023
In Term 3 the recruitment process will begin for any current Year 2 and 3 students who are interested in joining the Strings or Band program in 2023.
Students are only allowed to participate in either Strings- violin, viola, cello and bass OR Band – brass, woodwind and percussion (beginning in Year 4).
Students are expected to commit and continue in the program throughout their primary school years.
The recruitment process for both year levels is a three-step process:
- Aural and rhythm testing – strong aural and rhythm skills are beneficial when learning a musical instrument
- Evening Parent Information Session
- Physical testing – under the supervision of the instrumental music teachers, students try out the instruments available to ascertain their physical capability to hold and produce sound on the instruments.
The Instrumental Music teachers also consider observations made by class/specialist teachers when offering students a place in the Instrumental Music Program.
The aural testing stage will occur for all Year 2 and 3 students in the first few weeks of term 3. The parent information session and physical testing stages will occur later in term 3. Please keep your eyes out for more information on these two stages via the school newsletter and emails from the school.
STATE HONOURS ENSEMBLE PROGRAM MIDDLE SCHOOL
Three of our Yeronga musicians were selected to participate in SHEP (State Honours Ensemble Program) Middle School weekend event held at the Queensland Conservatorium. Students are selected for this prestigious event from throughout the state according to their level of musical achievement. The students rehearsed in one of many ensembles all day Saturday, and then performed at the Queensland Conservatorium Concert Hall on the Sunday.
Congratulations to Ariel, Indigo and Toby who participated in Middle School SHEP last weekend.
SOUTHSIDE JUNIOR STRINGS WORKSHOP
On Thursday and Friday of week 9 year 4 strings students will attend Coorparoo State School for the Southside Region Junior Strings Workshop with more than 100 other strings students from the region. The students will present a massed string orchestra and choir concert for parents on the Friday afternoon.
PARENT CAFÉ MUSIC PERFORMANCES
We’ve had some strings students braving the cold to perform background music for families at the Parent Café on Tuesdays from 8:30am outside the year 1 building. The String Quartet have impressed parents with their two performances at the cafe and keep an eye out for more performances from other students in future weeks!
