Parent Café

Have you checked out Parent Café – every Tuesday morning in the junior school from 8:30am?  Why not organise a catch up with a couple of other parents and get a free coffee or hot chocolate while you talk.

Handling Disappointment

There are always going to be times when we are disappointed, and unfortunately it happens for our children too.  Maybe they didn’t do as well this week in the athletic’s carnival as they hoped, or they struggled academically across the term, or later in the year they might miss out on a coveted leadership position. In the earlier years, it is seen when children don’t get a toy they hoped for, or miss out on a special treat.  Being able to cope with disappointment is a skill that we can develop, and resilience in this area is learnt progressively from the early years right through life.

As significant adults in their lives, it is important that we don’t shelter them from failure or discomfort, but instead provide love, guidance, and support through the difficult times of disappointment. You can help your children manage their disappointment by validating their feelings and agreeing that their heartbreak is upsetting, and helping them to engage with emotional regulation strategies (deep-breathing, listening to music, gratitude journaling, etc.)  Remind them of how they have previously overcome disappointment, and encourage them by acknowledging the strengths and skills that are evident in their life, as well as positive character traits that they have used (persistence, determination, kindness, etc.)

Let’s help our students develop grit and resilience by facing their disappointments as they emerge, learning that it’s not the end of the world, and that there is so much more to hope for and enjoy in life.
