When I read over past newsletters (as I often do) to ensure I am keeping you informed about important school events and initiatives, it has struck me how each two week period has been responding to another major change school operations this year. We are navigating an ever-changing political and natural world it seems. Tried and true ways of planning, preparing and delivering are being challenged and rapidly transforming. I acknowledge and thank you for your patience and resilience as we prioritise our core purpose, the belonging and continuity of learning for your children at Yeronga State School. As we welcome back our families to our school site, we are also welcoming back children and families who are in distress following the floods. The support offered to families from Chappy and the PandC over the past couple of weeks has been a godsend. I know the community wrap around you have provided each other is an attribute of a resilient community. Your demonstrations of care and concern for friends and neighbours has been inspiring. There are many organisations helping right now. Headspace has some good advice in how to help support young people after exposure to a traumatic event you may find useful at present and I encourage you to continue to reach out to the school should you need to.
Below is a snapshot of the term and the remaining whole school events. When looking back, we are looking forward to prioritise what is urgent and important for our students and staff over the remaining four weeks of term. What is wonderful is that all families are encouraged to be back on site and joining in the upcoming events. Please also note that assembly is now held on Friday mornings in the hall at 9.00am. Prep -Year 2 assembly is held on the even weeks and Year 3-6 on the odd weeks. Please come along if you are able. We would love to see you there! Lookout for information regarding Parent Café in Chappy’s newsletter piece.
Commencing next week are Parent Teacher Interviews. You will have received an invite to book a 15 minute conversation with your child’s classroom teacher over the next two weeks. It is really important that we acknowledge, the progress ordinarily made by this time of term 1 cannot reasonably be expected under the conditions of January, February and March 2022 in South East Queensland. Our teachers are prioritising wellbeing and literacy and numeracy routines. The purpose of the Term 1 interviews are to share information between teacher and parent about each child as a learner. Please remember the sessions are short at 15 minutes. If you are requiring a longer meeting with your teacher I ask that you arrange that directly with them for an alternative time. Due to the tight scheduling the face to face meetings must be kept on time. This term they will be held in your child’s classroom.
For families who have been at Yeronga State School for many years you will know the enrolment growth and the associated changes. One impact has been on the Outside Hours School Care service and the management of increasing demand on the service. A special PandC Meeting is being held prior to the AGM on Tuesday 15 March in the resource centre for members. This will be followed by the AGM and the nominations and election of the incoming PandC Executive. The role of the PandC Executive is vital to the flourishing and ongoing school improvement. If you are passionate about Yeronga State School continuing to be a great state school I encourage you to attend and consider nominating for a position. Whilst the roles are at times demanding in a large school such as ours, the opportunity to have a hands-on contribution to the direction and outcomes of the school is a significantly important and rewarding one. At this point I would like to acknowledge the current PandC Executive and thank them for their outstanding contribution to our school over the past few years; Kym Mansfield and Hamish Townsend, Anna Rimpau, Cedryk Vaquette, Russell Neville, Julia Connors , Amy Smith and Juliet Brooks. There is no doubt they have held the positions through what can unequivocally be considered some of the most disruptive to school operations and community in a generation. Your passion, commitment and support has been exemplary and on behalf of our entire school community acknowledge and thankyou you from the bottom of our hearts for seeing us through. I very much look forward to meeting our new executive to take us into 2023 and beyond.
Facilities Update
The school continues to operate within major construction sites. The PandC funded landscape project is due to be completed by the end of Term 1 (weather permitting). The area between the library and the hall has proved to be very popular as an extension of the library at lunchtimes since this part of the project was handed over at the start of the year. When the works are complete, classes will be involved in an orientation session as well as negotiating the expectations and care of the area. The handover of the new administration, classrooms, curiosity centre and staffroom is on target for the end of Term 2. Delays have been impacted by supplies, weather and other COVID related factors. How we work, move about and play in the surrounding areas and within the facilities will require significant change to routines and procedures. The Year 1 Nature playground will be restored as part of the completion of works. Year 2 and 3 students currently in the old timber buildings will relocate to the new classrooms. At this stage the Year 3 classes in the MA block will stay where they are. The relocation of 9 classes, the entire administration and staffroom will create vacant spaces to accommodate anticipated enrolment growth as well as much needed meeting and collaboration spaces.
New works to commence is the installation of solar panels on the roof of MA and the Resource Centre as part of the state-wide Solar Schools program. The opportunity for students to engage with the curriculum via an app that monitors in real time the school’s energy consumption and savings is an excellent opportunity to connect to real world inquiry learning. Yeronga State School timber classrooms have been nominated by the region for an internal upgrade. A project manager has been appointed and the scope of works finalised next week for tender.
The $85000 state funding for Tennis in Schools project has been approved by the Minister Hon. Grace Grace. This funding along with the commitment from the 2020 PandC members will provide external lighting to the existing tennis courts. I am yet to confirm the timing of the roll out of this initiative and asset upgrade.
As a growing school and neighbourhood, increased pressure on our roads will be compounded to a degree when Parkside Yeronga on the corner of Park Rd and Villa St is completed. The School Traffic Management Plan (TMP) is an initiative of the Brisbane City Council (BCC) to assist schools with managing community traffic issues around the school site. The Active School Travel initiative is another BCC initiative the school is involved in with the aim of passive school travel to and from school. If you are interested in being involved in the development of the school’s TMP I encourage you to contact me.
I do hope this week brings you moments of much needed hope and joy,
Eunice

Behaviour Expectations and Wellbeing
Past editions of the newsletter have included information about our weekly Behaviour Expectations and Wellbeing lessons, based on Yeronga State School’s Behaviour Matrix, the five Learner Assets, our Wellbeing Framework, and Zones of Regulation. These expectations and learner assets are referred to daily in classrooms, during active supervision of students during break times, and at assemblies.
This edition of the newsletter includes some information about the Zones of Regulation. The core focus ZoR is to positively support the acquisition of self-regulation skills, especially in school-age children, as they learn to work together as a group. There are no good or bad Zones. The Zone we are in is determined by how we feel on the inside, not the behaviour on the outside.
Teaching staff at Yeronga State School utilise Zones of Regulation to facilitate conversations with students about their emotional and sensory needs. Students are taught to identify feelings and emotions in themselves and others. They are then taught effective strategies to manage their responses to emotional and sensory situations.
What do the Zones of Regulation Look Like
The following information is to be used as a guide only. There are several other emotions and strategies that students may implement that are conducive their learning.
Blue Zone
Feelings include: Tired, Sick, Sad, Upset, Bored
Students may be slumped at their desk, not engaged in activities. [See What do the Zones of Regulation Look Like link below]
Strategies for the blue zone aimed at waking up the student’s body, helping students feel better and regaining their focus.
Examples: * Have a drink of water * Movement break or exercise *Get some fresh air or a run and errand.
Green Zone
Feelings Include: Good, Happy, Focused, Calm, Relaxed
Students are settled, ready to learn, sitting up straight and listening to instructions. [See What do the Zones of Regulation Look Like link below]
Strategies for the Green Zone are aimed at keeping the feelings of in control and maintaining an appropriate level of focus.
Examples: * Popcorn holds * Carry heavy object
Understanding the Zones of Regulation
The next edition of the newsletter will include information about the Yellow and Red Zones. Ask your children which strategies they find useful when they are in a particular Zone. Adults use these strategies too.
Legacy Committee Workshop Day
On the 16th March, all year 6 students will have the opportunity to participate in the first Legacy Committee Workshop Day. The purpose of these legacy committees is for students to work together as a team of school leaders to improve our school and leave a legacy as they end their primary school journey at the end of this year. Embedded within the legacy committees is the opportunity for all students to develop their leadership capabilities and lead improvement for our school.
The legacy committees are aligned to our big 4 school priorities;
- Wellbeing
- Curiosity and Creativity
- Outdoor Play
- Sustainability
Students will engage in a full day workshop led by Mrs Webb, Miss Kirk and the year 6 teachers, designed to explore student passion areas, and delve deeper into each committee area. During this day, students will collectively nominate for their committee areas, and work together to set some goals for this year. There are three focus areas for goal setting;
- What do we want to improve?
- What actions can we do to contribute?
- What do we want to fundraise for?
At the end of the day, students will nominate their legacy committee representative. Each committee will have 2 representatives, who will be the spokesperson for the committee throughout the year. These committee representatives will also be acknowledged on the Leadership induction ceremony and be presented with a badge.
This day is a special day for our leaders, and as such, the school will cater this event. We have ordered an assortment of savoury and sweet items for morning tea, and sandwiches, wraps and rice paper rolls for lunch. Students will identify if any dietary requirements will be catered for.
Students will need to bring a water bottle and munch and crunch as per usual.
We look forward to working alongside all year 6 students on our school improvement journey.
Halogens Young Leaders Day
On Monday 28th March 2022 we will be travelling to The Brisbane Convention Centre as part of our Student Council Program.
The program for the day is designed to benefit students in developing their leadership potential through listening to guest speakers who come from ‘all walks of life’. This is an extremely exciting opportunity for our Yeronga State School Student Council representatives.
We look forward to sharing our learnings with the school community in term 2.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews are coming up soon, starting on Monday 21st March. With the easing of Covid restrictions, these interviews can be conducted face to face. Teachers will meet with you in the classrooms. We know the start to this year has been turbulent, and as such, teachers have a focus on student progress thus far in the areas of literacy and numeracy. We look forward to welcoming you all into our classrooms.
Student Leadership Induction Ceremony
We will be celebrating our student leaders and student councillors at a special induction ceremony on Friday 25th March at 9am in the hall. This is a special ceremony to recognise the important role of student leaders in our school.
Year 6 students, and student councillors from years 3,4 and 5 and their families are invited to come along and an invitation will be sent home shortly.

Flood Recovery…
My thoughts and prayers are with the whole community as we travel through this flood crisis and recovery together. Over the last ten days, I’ve heard many of your stories and the associated grief and trauma you have been going through, but I am also encouraged by your resilience and courage, and the support and assistance given from those who have mucked in to help.
My efforts at school to help have been concentrated on these things:
Parent Café - I am available 8:30-9:30am each day this week to talk with parents, (and not just those in crisis). The café is also a space where you can meet other parents over a cuppa if you would like to stay. It is operating under L Block and with this hot week, it has been moved into the kitchen / junior first aid area to take advantage of the air-conditioning. Next week (15-17/3) the café will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
Being School Ready – I walk around and check in with every class each day to see if students need help with uniforms, shoes, school bags, etc. With so many recent donations, students needing assistance have been given what they need to be school ready. There are more supplies available, so If you require further uniforms, shoes, etc. please let me know. Donations are still appreciated, and will be accepted up at the office or the uniform shop.
Food Program – breakfast and lunch is being provided for out of the tuckshop thanks to the P&C staff. This essential program will continue, so please access the food supply if that is helpful. Students can bring their empty lunchboxes in to the tuckshop before school or at first break, and it will be filled. My freezer is full of ready-to-go sandwiches and there are also family-sized dinners available to take home if required. If more are needed, there are many generous families who are happy to help cook.
Connection – I am taking phone calls, replying to emails, and meeting with parents as much as is possible. Please feel free to connect with me if you need some extra help, although I recognise that there are many government services and agencies, as well as your own support networks that are meeting needs.
Thank you to all those generous people in our community who have been emailing and offering help. As needs arise, I will be in touch.
Quarantine Care Packages…
The quarantine care packages are still available if you are stuck at home. I am happy to drop a package around to your family. Please email me with your address and I’ll come as soon as possible.
Harmony Day…
Unfortunately as we cope with the evolving trauma of our community and so many school closures this term, it has been decided to postpone Harmony Day to later in the year. The rescheduled date has not yet been determined at this stage.
While Harmony Day is an important date in our school calendar, it takes considerable effort to make it such a special and memorable event. Given the disruption we have already had this term, it is important that we concentrate on our mission of providing a great education for our students and lean into every learning opportunity. I look forward to having our celebrations later in the year.
Blessings, Chappy Jenny

Easter Raffle - tickets coming home Friday and call for prize donations
Our wonderful P&C volunteers are keen to run the annual Easter fundraiser for our community this year. With Covid disruptions and the recent unfortunate flooding events, the promotion of the Easter raffle has been delayed.
Flyers and raffle tickets will be sent home this Friday, 11 March. Please sell these to family and friend - an absolute bargain at 50 cents/ticket. Please bring put all raffle ticket proceeds, and sold and unsold tickets, in the P&C payment box in the year 1 building or the Library.

The more donations, the more prizes on offer! Our amazing parent volunteers will make up the prize hampers and lots of lucky winners drawn prior to the end of term in time for Easter celebrations.
Please see the Easter raffle flyer for more information and look out for the raffle tickets in your children's bags. Thank you to the grade 6 students who will collect the donations from classrooms to be stored in the library so that the chocolate treats do not melt. Thank you to Debbie Cowie for your ongoing support and allowing the P&C to access your limited space in the library.
If you would like to help in any way with bundling up donations and making up hampers, please get in touch by emailing operations@yerongasspandc.org.au
Senior Cross Country Sno Cones - 14 March - Seeking volunteers
With the Senior Cross country going ahead this coming Monday, 14 March, we are seeking volunteers to help bring smiles to many faces while making delicious sno cones. Crushing ice and pouring syrup is an easy way to help out…and it’s only for a few hours.
To offer your help please contact our parent coordinator Sarah Rochford via email s.rochford@hotmail.com. For more information about the snow cones stall you're also welcome to email operations@yerongasspandc.org.au.
Volunteers are needed from 8:30am to help with set up, and from 9:00-11:30am to make sno cones. You'll also be able to watch your child in their event. Children are asked to bring in $2 each for their sno cones - a rewarding treat after their run!
Community Support during 2022 Floods
We are so lucky to have such an amazing community both within our school and also surrounding us external to our school. We would like to thank so many who have helped in so many ways. The list is by no means exhaustive and apologies if anyone has been missed. We are truly a village:
- Yeronga Community Plus Centre – Melinda and the team have been working closely with our school P&C in providing sandwiches and snack donations for our school lunch program. The team there have also been an amazing support of families affected by the recent floods. If you find yourself unaffected by the floods and are looking to help to make meals or deliveries, please head over to the community centre and your assistance will be gladly accepted. There are many services based out of the community centre if you have been affected by the floods and need additional support.
- Bunnings Rocklea - despite being affected by the floods themselves, Bunnings Rocklea Events Coordinator Rhiannon Howard has advised that Bunnings head office has donated $500 towards items for our school community affected by the floods. We have a couple great key ideas on what this could be used for to benefit many so watch this space
- Woolworths Moorooka – the management team at Moorooka (Lance and Jamie) have also gone above and beyond in contributing a $500 store credit to the P&C to ensure essential items for the breakfast program, lunch program and general wellbeing can be obtained for our school children.
- The Buy Nothing/Give for Nothing Annerley and Fairfield Facebook group members have been outstanding contributors for pantry items towards the school lunch program also. The pantry items will provide some longer term ingredients to make muffins in the Tuckshop and to continue with the breakfast program if needed.
- Desley Griffiths who many of you know from her community work in the Moorooka area through the Brisbane Vintage and Collectables Op Shop – was amazing in getting us that first donation to ensure the breakfast club was well resourced the first day it was needed. At the time there wasn't much on shop shelves, but Desley's 'little elves' somehow found everything needed and all was dropped at our doorstep.
- The school community who, without being asked, just dropped off donations of fruit, milk and muffins…just to help out. We thank you.
- The P&C also made an out of meeting executive decision to approve up to $500 in the Tuckshop and $500 in the Uniform Shop to be available to fund meals or uniforms where no donations can be sourced. This has provided a great safety blanket for our teams to support families directly when they come in. There are still funds available within each service to support families who need it.
Uniform Shop - Thank you and 150th bags
Thank you for the generous donations of uniforms we have been receiving. Since our initial call out for items, we have been very fortunate that between Chappy Jenny's donations, uniform shop supplies, and families donating their unused items, we have been able to help many families affected by the floods. These supplies were also amazingly helpful in the return to school period.
A quick little note to advise that the uniform shop is supporting the 150th memorabilia by selling the commemorative bags as school library bags. We will not be purchasing nylon bags while we continue to support our reusable items.
2022 P&C membership
All 2021 P&C memberships will lapse at the AGM. Please take a moment (less than a minute, we promise!) to sign up as a P&C member for 2022 via our online membership form: www.surveymonkey.com/r/2022YSSPandCMembership.
Your membership is a great support to the school through the P&C, and is the best way to ensure you receive our P&C news and communications throughout the year. It also gives you the power to vote at our AGM and general monthly meetings. While we encourage all members to attend meetings if they can, there is absolutely no obligation as we understand how busy life is with children. Your membership will help us with grant applications and allows us to keep you updated with copies of monthly minutes (a key source of news and information for our community).

Bienvenido/Welcome to the Junior Spanish Newsletter,
Dear families welcome back my thoughts are with everyone during these challenging times. It is great seeing all the students engaging in our language program. Our Prep students have made their own portraits and learning how to introduce themselves Spanish. Year 1 and 2 are learning about school items and starting to name and label them. Year 3 and 4 are starting to communicate with each other in Spanish, using greetings and asking how they are feeling. Our year 5 and 6 have being learning about Spanish Speaking countries around the world and next week will start their research on one of these Spanish speaking countries.
Here are more ideas to support student’s and their families with Spanish. Here are some free books you can download from through the Books app. These books are audible and easy for the whole family to use. Click on the two books and it will take you to the apple store. There are other books you might like to download they have a cost of $3.99 each.
I have been asked to share two Langauage Holiday Camps that are available. Here are the links to their programs where you can find all the information. Click on the logo to go to their website for more information.

Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)
The trial dates for term one of 2022 are listed below.
District Sport and COVID
Please remember the following district/regional policy if your child is attending district or regional trial in term 1:
“In light of the department’s back to school Covid Safe Plans and Practices, as well as restrictions imposed by various school venues running many of our trials, we have made a decision that NO SPECTATORS will be permitted to attend Eastern Taipans District Sports Trials until further notice.”
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

A highlight of Open Day is a ‘behind the scenes’ tour hosted by our current student leaders. Not only will you be guided around our wonderful school but they will share with you stories about their very own student experience along the way!
Our 2022 Open Day will be held on Wednesday 25 May, 2pm to 7pm.
