Deputy Principals' Report

Behaviour Expectations and Wellbeing

Past editions of the newsletter have included information about our weekly Behaviour Expectations and Wellbeing lessons, based on Yeronga State School’s Behaviour Matrix, the five Learner Assets, our Wellbeing Framework, and Zones of Regulation. These expectations and learner assets are referred to daily in classrooms, during active supervision of students during break times, and at assemblies.

This edition of the newsletter includes some information about the Zones of Regulation.   The core focus ZoR is to positively support the acquisition of self-regulation skills, especially in school-age children, as they learn to work together as a group. There are no good or bad Zones. The Zone we are in is determined by how we feel on the inside, not the behaviour on the outside.

Teaching staff at Yeronga State School utilise Zones of Regulation to facilitate conversations with students about their emotional and sensory needs. Students are taught to identify feelings and emotions in themselves and others. They are then taught effective strategies to manage their responses to emotional and sensory situations.

What do the Zones of Regulation Look Like

Understanding the Zones of Regulation

The next edition of the newsletter will include information about the Yellow and Red Zones.  Ask your children which strategies they find useful when they are in a particular Zone.   Adults use these strategies too.

Legacy Committee Workshop Day

On the 16th March, all year 6 students will have the opportunity to participate in the first Legacy Committee Workshop Day. The purpose of these legacy committees is for students to work together as a team of school leaders to improve our school and leave a legacy as they end their primary school journey at the end of this year.  Embedded within the legacy committees is the opportunity for all students to develop their leadership capabilities and lead improvement for our school.

The legacy committees are aligned to our big 4 school priorities;

  1. Wellbeing
  2. Curiosity and Creativity
  3. Outdoor Play
  4. Sustainability

Students will engage in a full day workshop led by Mrs Webb, Miss Kirk and the year 6 teachers, designed to explore student passion areas, and delve deeper into each committee area.  During this day, students will collectively nominate for their committee areas, and work together to set some goals for this year.  There are three focus areas for goal setting;

  1. What do we want to improve?
  2. What actions can we do to contribute?
  3. What do we want to fundraise for?

At the end of the day, students will nominate their legacy committee representative.  Each committee will have 2 representatives, who will be the spokesperson for the committee throughout the year.  These committee representatives will also be acknowledged on the Leadership induction ceremony and be presented with a badge.

This day is a special day for our leaders, and as such, the school will cater this event.  We have ordered an assortment of savoury and sweet items for morning tea, and sandwiches, wraps and rice paper rolls for lunch. Students will identify if any dietary requirements will be catered for.

Students will need to bring a water bottle and munch and crunch as per usual.

We look forward to working alongside all year 6 students on our school improvement journey.

Halogens Young Leaders Day

On Monday 28th March 2022 we will be travelling to The Brisbane Convention Centre as part of our Student Council Program.

The program for the day is designed to benefit students in developing their leadership potential through listening to guest speakers who come from ‘all walks of life’. This is an extremely exciting opportunity for our Yeronga State School Student Council representatives.

We look forward to sharing our learnings with the school community in term 2.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent Teacher Interviews are coming up soon, starting on Monday 21st March.  With the easing of Covid restrictions, these interviews can be conducted face to face.  Teachers will meet with you in the classrooms.  We know the start to this year has been turbulent, and as such, teachers have a focus on student progress thus far in the areas of literacy and numeracy.  We look forward to welcoming you all into our classrooms.

Student Leadership Induction Ceremony

We will be celebrating our student leaders and student councillors at a special induction ceremony on Friday 25th March at 9am in the hall. This is a special ceremony to recognise the important role of student leaders in our school.

Year 6 students, and student councillors from years 3,4 and 5 and their families are invited to come along and an invitation will be sent home shortly.
