Dear Families
I am sure you, as I am, are astounded to be on holiday in a few days’ time. The term has flown! For many of our families the start of our holiday break is of spiritual significance. I encourage and support all our families to engage in the rituals of connection, reflection and gratitude as they are practiced in your home. We know these important rituals and practices support human flourishing and wellbeing. Personally, I am looking forward to camping on Straddie with my husband over the Easter long weekend. We both look forward very much each year to our annual camp on Main Beach. Richard, the all night fishing down at ‘The Pin’ and me, beach combing and lolling about in the gutters at low tide. I truly hope for your family, the break is a time to connect and reflect in gratitude also.
With the challenges of 2020 behind us, this term has been a significant adjustment to the pace of working, school and family life. On the highway now! The Term 1 check-in point is a great opportunity to review progress against our goals, plans and expectations for the year. At Yeronga SS, the cycle of inquiry guides us in all we do. Be it school strategic planning, curriculum planning, assessment and reporting and individual student ‘next steps’ for improvement are supported by systems and processes to ensure alignment, consistency of practice and progress towards our school and student learning targets.
This year one of our three priority areas is Whole School Inclusion and Wellbeing Supported by;
-improved communication processes with stakeholders
-clearly documented and consistently executed responsive systems
-evidence based approach to decision making and support programs
I thank our community for the ongoing constructive feedback (sometimes in frustration) as we work towards the above. On behalf of our teaching and non-teaching staff, thank you for your words of encouragement and support over the term. Together we are always better.

Principal’s Visual Art Archive- Children of Yeronga State School
As a teacher and school principal of over 30 years, I have observed as part of my professional practice, the early signs of giftedness in young children. In many cases this gift, has later developed into talent and accomplishment in the associated field in adult life. Particularly in sport, music and other academic disciplines. In almost every case, that child has first received adult recognition, opportunity and career pathway support for that born gift to become a talent.
The visual arts is an area of particular interest to me and an area that is lacking in excellence pathways for primary school students. The visual arts is a powerful tool for documenting and foregrounding the ideas, values and voice of children in society. It is for these reasons as the newly appointed principal coinciding with the 150th Year Anniversary of Yeronga State School, I am launching the Principal’s Visual Art Archive. This archive will be just that. A collection of visual art produced by children of Yeronga State School in this 150th year, will be held in trust for future generations to view, ponder and marvel.
Each subsequent year during Term 2 an exhibition of selected works by the Principal will be displayed in the foyer of the Administration, gallery style with an opening to invited dignitaries and guests. All submissions will be held in trust by the school, a selection will be chosen each year to be exhibited for the next 150 years.
All students enrolled at the school in 2021 are encouraged to contribute.
The art work must be;
- the child’s original work of art
- on quality A3 Paper
- submitted with the art documentation and permission pages complete and signed by the child artist and parent/guardian
- submitted to the Principal via the school administration office by 1 May 2021
Every student will receive an envelope this week with information and consent forms. Children who are wanting to submit and do not have access to their own materials are encouraged to discuss with their class teacher.
I very much look forward to receiving the submissions from our young artists.
Have a great holiday with the children!

Good morning,
Yeronga station customers can start looking forward to a new station in the future but right now, to ensure works can be undertaken safely and more efficiently, Yeronga station will be closing from 19 April for approximately six months.
The works at Yeronga station will include raising platform 1 and 2, relocating in-ground services, constructing retaining walls, installing shade canopies and installing new station amenities. When the station reopens to services, construction will continue to complete permanent features. These activities have less of an impact on the operation of the station.
To help customers reach their destination during the station closure, there will be a new, temporary bus service introduced to support these important Cross River Rail works. Route 109 (Moorooka to Boggo Road) – or StationLink – is a limited stops bus service, running from Moorooka train station to Boggo Road busway station, servicing two new stops near Yeronga station.
We appreciate your patience during construction and will continue to update you as work progresses.
For more information on the Yeronga station rebuild, you can read the works notification here.

Deputy Principal Communication
(Week 9 Term 1 2021)
As we near the end of Term One, it is timely to reflect on the positive start to the school year here at Yeronga State School. Staff are continuing to build relationships with students in order to maximise achievement through creating comfortable and safe learning environments. A part of building positive relationships is engaging in the curiosity projects that children bring in and present – we look forward to hearing and seeing what the children are interested in sharing with their teacher and peers.
Before School Expectations
It is timely for us to share with the school community our expectations around before and after school play. We ask our school community to assist us by adhering to the following guidelines:
- The Prep and Year 1 Nature’s Play area is out of bounds for all children before and after school (this aligns with our procedures for the Senior Natures Play area)
- No student should be in the school grounds before 8:15am unless attending YOSHC or another approved extra-curricular activity
- All students who are not attending YOSHC should aim to arrive after 8:30am
- Children are not allowed to be playing on any playgrounds, both senior or junior, prior to 8:30am (if any children in Yr 1 – Yr 6 arrive between 8:15am - 8:30am they should be seated under C Block).
- Children in Prep and Year 1 only are allowed to be on the Prep and Year 1 play equipment between 8:30am – 8:45am (this does not apply to Nature’s Play – this is out of bounds).
- Prep children should be signed in at the classroom by a parent at 8:50am.
Thank you in anticipation for your support.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Thank you to the parent community who came along to discover how their children have been progressing thus far in 2021. It was lovely to hear the conversations that were occurring around academic, social and emotional learning. At Yeronga State School, we encourage you to keep the lines of communication with the class teacher open and if you have any celebrations or concerns please share that with them as we are invested in your child being successful.
Active School Travel
Thank you to all the parents and children who are participating in Active School Travel on the Wednesday mornings. The AST captains are continuing to do an amazing job and have been quite surprised with how many children are actively travelling to school. Last week, we had two raffle draws – one on the Wednesday and one on the Friday for National Ride your Bike to Work/ School day. Emmie in Year 1 receiving her prize:
We look forward to more students actively travelling to school this coming week to go into the end of term grand prize draw.

Hi Everyone,
It’s my first week at Yeronga State School and it’s been lovely getting to know everyone. Thank you for the warm welcome I have received from students, staff and families. Yeronga State School is certainly a happy place, full of smiling faces.
I’m excited to be joining the Yeronga team as acting Deputy Principal 3-6 behind Kate Paynter. My education experience has been largely in the inclusion space, where I have had the pleasure of working with staff and students to ensure that all learners are successful and meet their individual goals. Having worked in special education settings for many years, I appreciate the uniqueness and abilities that all students bring to the classroom and school community.
I look forward to working with you as a team to help each and every student meet their goals and have a successful school year.
As I settle in to Yeronga, please stop by and say hello. I look forward to meeting you all.
Regards,
Stef Kirk

Fete news
Excitement mounts as plans for our 2021 YSS Fete on 22 May are rapidly taking shape. A massive THANK YOU to the Fete Committee that has been working for more than a year to bring this terrific community building and fundraising activity to fruition. To be the first to hear the latest Fete news, please like and follow the Yeronga State School Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/yerongastateschoolfete/, and tag your friends!
Special thanks to our major Fete sponsors for your support, including:
- Lauren McHutchison Property - Platinum sponsor
- Brisbane Prestige Plunge Pools - Fireworks sponsor
- Motorama Kia Moorooka - Gold sponsor.
The Fete team is finalising sponsorships so if you or a business you know would like to become a sponsor or prize donor please email yssfete@gmail.com or visit https://yerongass150.com/call-for-sponsors/ for more information.
Fete levy payments ($10) can now be made via Flexischools (a big time saver and much appreciated support), and the YSS Garden Club is seeking all types of plants - big, small, edible, succulent, in full bloom or a bit sad and in need of care - to get into fine form ready to sell at the Fete. Please pop any plants you would like to donate on the picnic table at the garden club (near the Tuckshop and old dental building) and Garden Club green thumbs will take care of them until Fete day.
Stall class allocations:
The different stall sign-up sheets are now open and ready to accept volunteering help. With lots of parents at the school, if everyone can give an hour (or two) of their time, everyone should be have ample time to still enjoy the fete. There is a stall allocation per class as a guide to make volunteering choices easier. If you have skills that might be better utilised at another stall, you can certainly volunteer at a stall that isn’t allocated to your child’s class. For example, if you know the fine art of spinning fairy floss, feel free to sign up at the floss stall. Other stalls where specific skills would be helpful are Crazy hair, Soft serve ice cream, and photographers / videographers on the day.
Click here: https://signup.com/go/dxjNQMR to find all of the stall and volunteering opportunities.
The school performance program for the day will be released very soon to help you time your volunteering around performances.
Fete children’s performance program:
The kids performances are so special, you won’t want to miss them. See when your child is performing so you can plan your volunteering spots accordingly.
Class allocations for stalls:
Second hand stall donations
Next Pre-loved items collection day direct to the container. This Sunday 28thMarch, 9am – 11am.
Thank you for your donations so far. A gentle reminder that we do not accept kitchenware or household items. We will accept empty boxes and shelves.

The team is currently busy laying out the 150th commemorative book which will be a coffee table style book full of history, memories, pictures and fun facts about our great school. We are hoping to have these ready to physically purchase at the fete. Pre-orders are available if you would like to secure a copy and save some money at the same time!

Yeronga State School – Celebrating 150 years in 2021
Harmony Day
this year at our school again was beautifully celebrated, with the theme “Peace in the World”, inspired by the story of Sadako Sasaki, who as a three year old survived the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945. At both Harmony Day assemblies, I shared her story
At eleven years of age, Sadako began to become ill with a nuclear-related illness, and spent fourteen months in hospital before she passed away. Even though she was sick, Sadako was brave and resilient, and brought lots of happiness to her family, friends, and the other children in hospital. While Sadako was in hospital, the Red Cross Youth Club visited the hospital and gave them all an origami crane. In Japanese folklore, cranes were believed to live for a thousand years, and if you folded an origami crane for each year of crane’s life, then your wish would come true. Sadako began to fold origami cranes with whatever paper she could get, including the paper from medicine bottles, lolly wrappers and gift paper. Before she died, she had folded over thirteen hundred cranes which filled her hospital room. Many of them she had given away to bring health and happiness to the people she met.
Sadako wished for her own good health, but also thought beyond her own needs, and was worried about the world. She asked herself, “How can I make the world a better place while I’m still alive?” She shared with her family and friends, that she wanted to help the world be a more peaceful place. Even though she was just a young girl, Sadako’s story has since inspired millions of people around the world. The paper crane is probably the most recognised origami model, and is still given to others as a wish for peace. Sadako’s classmates wanted to honour her and other atomic bomb victims, and raised money to build a monument in the Hiroshima Peace Park. It is a statue of Sadako lifting a paper crane overhead. At the foot of the statue is a plaque that reads, “This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world”.
I love that in our school creed we say, “This is our school, let peace be here.” Sadako found a way to bring peace and happiness to the people she met. My question for our students, staff and parents, is “How will you bring peace to this school?” It is up to all of us to decide to be happy, to forgive and let things go, to think about others not just ourselves, and consider what we can do to make a difference to bring peace and harmony.
Coming up this term

Running Club
Running club will continue next term on Tuesdays, from 3:15 to 3:45 and Thursdays from 7:45 to 8:15. Mr Sutherland will hold his sessions on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:15. Remember that all of these sessions will occur on the main, or years 3-6, oval.
School Swimming
School swimming lessons are concluding for Year 1 to Year 6, at Yeronga Park Pool. A big thank you to Yeronga Park Pool for their cooperation in organising and teaching lessons to our Year One to Four students and for the use of the complex for our carnivals, free of charge, and our behaviour celebrations at a very friendly price.
Qld Swimming Trialist
Congratulations to Samantha C who has been selected for the Met West Regional Team to swim at the Qld State Trial at Chandler on the 24th of February. I managed to catch up with her and she has very impressively shaved 6 seconds off her 200m Individual Medley time.
Met West AFL Girls
Congratulations to Amelie S and Martha W who were selected for the Met West Regional AFL team to play in Cairns in June. They are very excited and deservedly so. Well done also to Georgie and Eady B who trialled for the team as well.
Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)
The trial dates for the remainder of term one and term two of 2021 are listed below.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
Rebel Sport Community Givebacks
Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased cricket equipment, Footballs and Netballs with this credit. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself. Thanks to all of those who purchased at Rebel over the break. We have a very useful amount for equipment.

ANZAC Day Ceremony Friday 23 April at 9:00am
The annual Yeronga State School Anzac Day ceremony is rapidly approaching. Please note that the ANZAC Ceremony will be held during Week One of Term Two at 9am on Friday 23 April. We invite family and friends of Yeronga State School to join us for this annual event, which holds great significance for us all. Students are required to be dressed in full formal uniform (i.e. NO Senior shirts). We ask that all students arrive at school on time, so that the ceremony can begin promptly at 9am. Students are asked to bring along a small posy of flowers to lay under the trees on Honour Ave, as a part of the ceremony. The Garden Club will be selling posies prior to school on the day.
The students of Yeronga State School have also been invited by the members of the Stephens Sub-Branch RSL to join the annual Anzac Day March and Memorial Service, being held on Sunday 25th April. The Parade will step off at 7.00am from outside Yeronga State School and will travel along Park Road, turn right through the Yeronga Memorial Park gates into Honour Avenue and proceed to the Cenotaph (N.B. This is a new route for the Parade). The Memorial Service will commence at 7.30am. Students who are joining us on the march are asked to be wearing full formal uniform (with a hat) and are reminded to bring along a water bottle. We hope that a large number of students and parents can join us to mark this important occasion in our local community.
