Yeronga Newsletter - Week 3 / Term 1

Dear Families

It is hard to comprehend we are three weeks in to our 2021 school year.

Last Friday, school student leaders, staff, special guests, past and present students and principals came together to commemorate the foundation of the school at the 150th Foundation Assembly. This was a highly moving ceremony of reflection and gratitude. Special guests spanning the generations of years gone by, represented the many faces and stories of a much loved school. On behalf of the community, I acknowledge and thank the 150th Celebration Committee Chappy Jenny, Juliet Brooks and Carla Walker and look forward to the many events planned this year to involve the wider community.

I trust you have made opportunity to attend the parent information nights held this week and next. The Prep-Year 2 nights were well attended on Wednesday night. Our Year 3-6 Information Nights to be held next Wednesday 17 February not doubt will be equally well attended. I look forward to seeing many of you there. These evenings, whilst not really an opportunity for you to speak with your class teacher one on one, it is certainly an opportunity for you to meet the teachers and other parents as well as hear important key messages relevant to your child’s classroom this year.

This coming Tuesday evening is our first P&C meeting this year. The PandC is not only vital for raising funds to improve the facilities and learning programs at the school, but for managing important services such as Outside Hours School Care, tuckshop and uniform shop to support families. We are very fortunate at Yeronga State School to have a driven and talented group of parents who work tirelessly to ensure these services are the best they can be. Please consider coming along on Tuesday night (look for details in the newsletter) and finding out about the many projects and programs our PandC have in store this year.

Last night I met our new Parent Representatives for the 2021 year which was a delight. I thank Parent Representative Coordinator Jodie for a comprehensive induction (me included). At YSS every class has two parent representatives who volunteer to enhance the communications between school and home. Be sure to look out for their communications to you each week.

Following the slower pace of the school holiday period, week three is typically the week you may notice signs of fatigue in your child/ren such as irritability, tears and protests. The novelty of starting the school year, meeting new classmates and exploring new environments starts to wear off and the rhythm and repetition of the school routine sets in. Fatigue places extra demands on the pre-frontal cortex and ability to regulate emotions and solve problems. It’s a busy pace for most modern families and a busy pace at school as teachers engage every student with the rigours of the Australian Curriculum teaching, learning, assessment and reporting cycle. It is any wonder we must now slow down a little in order to finish the term strong.

At school we encourage slow play options such as nature play and loose parts play as an opportunity for all students to engage in open ended, unstructured play necessitating them to, slow down, connect and create. Yeronga State School is a leader for its inquiry approach to learning. Supported by a skilled and passionate curriculum team, teachers engage students in deep learning that allows time for reflecting and exploring ideas. This balance of structured and flexible/open ended engagement is critical to not only learning, but thriving and wellbeing.  I encourage you to consider the routines you can establish at home to support this slowing down. You may relate to some of the suggestions in Slow Living with Children written by child development expert and author of Simple Happy Parenting, Denaye Barahona.

Have a slower and wonderful week four!

Sincerely,

Eunice Webb

Principal

What a fabulous fortnight we have had at Yeronga State School! Classrooms were full of children learning and being curious, our new Prep families joined in the fun at the Prep Welcome Morning, and our Foundation Assembly was a great occasion to mark the 150th anniversary of our school. All students at Yeronga State School were thrilled to receive their very own commemorative badge to mark this special milestone in the history of our school.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Each year the students in Years 3 - 6 have the opportunity to vote for a class representative to join the Student Council. This election process took place last week and the successful representatives will presented with their badges as part of the forthcoming leadership induction ceremony.

Miss McDermott and Mrs Paynter are eager to work closely with this year’s Student Council Representatives to enable this group to provide a voice for the students of Yeronga State School. These students are also invited to be part of the Halogen Young Leader’s Day,  which is being held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday 24 February. This is an exciting leadership opportunity for our students to hear from a variety of high profile speakers and develop their future leadership potential.

STUDENT COUNCIL- FREE DRESS DAY

Our Student Council representatives are holding their first Free Dress Day for the year. Students will be invited to come along in free dress and bring a gold coin donation to support the YSS Fete Committee. It has been scheduled for Friday 26 February and the theme will be “come dressed in clothing from your choice of a decade within the last 150 years (in line with our 150th celebration)!

COVID NORMAL- UPCOMING SCHOOL EVENT ARANGEMENTS

The structure of the parent information and special assembly events has changed from previous years due to the Department of Education Industry COVID Safe Plan. Under COVID Normal parents are now welcome on school grounds and into classrooms, however social distancing parameters still remain.  Until otherwise advised there will be no large grouping of parents in halls and classrooms.  Please see the details below for our forthcoming events.

PARENT INFORMATION EVENINGS

  • YEAR 3-6 Parent Information Evening: TWO SESSIONS- Wednesdays 17 February (parents will be advised by classroom teachers which session attend). 6.00-6.30pm and 6.30-7.00pm

We welcome the opportunity for parents to meet with teachers in individual classrooms for Parent Information Evening and Week 4 (Year 3-6). Teachers will invite one group of parents into their classroom from 6-6:30pm and then a second group of parents into their classroom from 6:30pm – 7pm.  The guidelines will be one parent per family (please note that parents are welcome to discuss any exceptional family circumstances with the class teachers).  Teachers will make plans by dividing their class roll in half and will let parents know via class newsletters which sessions to attend.

LEADERSHIP INDUCTION CEREMONIES

The Student Leadership Inductions Ceremonies will take the following format this year:

THURSDAY 18 FEBRUARY 9am – Senior Leader Induction Ceremony (School &Vice/ House & Vice/ Music/ Environment/ ICT/ Resource/ Bell/ AST Captains as well as Year Six Senior Leader Badge presentation) . The guidelines will be one parent per family (please note that parents are welcome to discuss any exceptional family circumstances with the class teachers). Year 5 and 6 students will attend this ceremony.

FRIDAY 19 FEBRUARY 9am- Student Council Induction Ceremony (Year 3-6 Student Council Representatives). The guidelines will be one parent per family (please note that parents are welcome to discuss any exceptional family circumstances with the class teachers). Year 3,4, 5 and 6 students will attend this ceremony.

HELP KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE

For your child’s safety please ensure that students only enter the school grounds via the pedestrian gates (not the through any of the car parks). Cars are not to park in the school grounds. Street parking is available for parents. We also have a 2 minute – Stop, Kiss and Go area on Park Road.

The safety of our students is our priority, as these spaces have continual vehicle movement it is imperative that no student, even with an adult, walk through these areas. We thank you for your assistance in keeping our school a safe place to learn, grow and have fun.

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION

Queensland state schools embrace a multitude of cultural, religious and non-religious beliefs. Under the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006, schools are to provide Religious Instruction (RI) if approached by a faith group seeking to provide RI and students of that faith attend the school.  RI informs students about the beliefs and values of a particular religion. It is delivered by volunteers of a faith group using instructional materials approved by that faith group.

All RI instructors must hold a blue card and participate in compulsory Student Protection and Code of Conduct training. A school staff member will be present during the delivery of RI.

Participation in RI is not compulsory.  Any student (except Prep) may participate in RI if a parent has provided written instructions to the school – this is an area on the Student Enrolment Form.  This consent remains in effect unless the parent informs the school – all families that have given permission for RI will receive an email.

The RI program that is offered at the school is one based on the Christian Faith.

JUNIOR PARENT INFORMATION SESSIONS

It was so lovely to see all the parents that attended the junior parent information sessions.  It was a chance for parents to learn about how their child’s classroom operates as well as get to know the class teacher.  Thank you also to our teaching team who work tirelessly to ensure the Yeronga learning community is being engaged and inspired in their learning.

ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVEL

If you are a parent who would like to help in the active school travel space please email tfree19@eq.edu.au.  We currently have two active travel captains and two active travel vice captains, a lower school teacher and hopefully…… YOU!

We look forward to some parents joining the team and to seeing you at our forthcoming Parent Information Evenings.

Kate Paynter and Tracy Freeman

Welcome Corina Lancaster (Year 2 Teacher)

YNT1.pngWhy did you decide to become a teacher?

My first interest in teaching came purely from having a wonderful feeling knowing that I was helping someone else. It then gradually became a more intellectual curiosity into child development and a desire to support children and their parents.

What other schools have you worked at or where else have you taught?

I have taught in both private and public schools in Toronto, Oxford, London, and now Brisbane.

Who is in your family? What do you like to do together?

My husband, James, is a lecturer at UQ, and is a Historian. I have a daughter, Frances, who is attending Yeronga and is in Year 2. I have a son named Frasier who is three years old.

What do you like to do on the weekend?

I aim to have an uninterrupted cup of tea, but that rarely happens.

Book Club

Ordering books through Book Club is the easiest and most affordable way to offer students the best in children’s books for the home and to encourage independent reading for fun. Book Club offers students a wide range of titles in each issue, from popular and award-winning fiction series and charming new picture books, to fascinating nonfiction titles and hands-on activities that stimulate creativity and encourage problem-solving.

Plus every order you place earns the school FREE books for the library. Book Club catalogues arrive to school up to twice a term, so make sure you keep an eye out for when it arrives home in your child’s school bag!

How to Order Book Club

  1. Your child will bring home a Book Club catalogue from school
  2. Discuss with, and help your child pick the books they would like to read
  3. Order online via the Scholastic Australia LOOP website or app and the school will take care of the rest! (LOOP orders are electronically linked to your school in an easy, secure online process) Please note no cash orders.
  4. The books are delivered to your child’s classroom once they arrive at school.

P&C AGM: Tuesday, 16 February, 2021

The YSS P&C Executive team invites all parents, carers, staff and members of our school community to the 2021 P&C AGM on Tuesday, 16 February, at 6:00pm, in the school Resource Centre (library). At the AGM we will review and celebrate our community's achievements for the crazy year that was 2020, vote in the Executive team for 2021, and outline key areas of activity for the coming year.

For information on P&C Executive and other committee positions see the 'P&C Committee roles' page on the P&C website. Please email us at yerongasspandc@gmail.com if you are interested in taking on a more active role in the P&C but would like more information about available roles and responsibilities.

All nominations for executive positions should be received in writing prior to the AGM, via the P&C Executive Officer Nomination Form - please email your completed form to yerongasspandc@gmail.com.

The 2021 AGM will be followed by our first general meeting of the year. P&C meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month (except December, January, and during school holidays) at 7:00pm in the school Resource Centre (library). Meeting documentation is available on our AGM webpage: www.yerongasspandc.org.au/index.php/agm/.

2021 P&C membership

All 2019/20 P&C memberships will lapse at the AGM. Please take a moment (less than a minute, we promise!) to sign up as a P&C member for 2021 via our online membership form: www.surveymonkey.com/r/ysspandc2021membership.

Your membership is a great support to the school through the P&C, and is the best way to ensure you receive our P&C news and communications throughout the year. It also gives you the power to vote at our AGM and general monthly meetings. While we encourage all members to attend meetings if they can, there is absolutely no obligation as we understand how busy life is with children. Your membership will help us with grant applications and allows us to keep you updated with copies of monthly minutes (a key source of news and information for our community).

FETE 2021

2021 = 150th birthday for our school and FETE!

150 Years Old… Happy birthday YSS!!!  Having launched the 150th celebrations with a wonderful foundation assembly and commemorative tree planting on Friday, 5 February, there are plenty of opportunities planned to honour the school's sesquicentennial anniversary, including the FETE!!

Given the complexities of 2020, our aim for the Fete above all else, is to celebrate, have fun and bring our school community closer together (respecting Covid safe plans, of course). If we can raise some funds for the school at the same time, that will be a wonderful bonus that will benefit the school community through improved resources and facilities.

The 2021 Fete is taking shape and it's looking exciting! Mark Saturday, 22 May in your calendars and get set for some busy fun as we band together to create a great day out for the whole family. There will be a lot of activity and communication in the lead up to the big day.

To keep you updated and informed, stay on top of it all by liking our Fete Facebook page (www.facebook.com/yerongastateschoolfete) and keep an eye on your inbox for messages from your parent rep and the fete newsletter. There will be plenty of opportunities to help out, but if you are feeling like you want to get involved, feel free to reach out, yssfete@gmail.com.

For some inspiration and insights into the fun and colour of our last Fete in 2019, head to our Fete page on the P&C website: www.yerongasspandc.org.au/index.php/fete/.

Seeking stall coordinators

We are on the look out for some very cool people who can take the helm of one of the school-run stalls. Can you help? (Maybe buddy up with another parent and work as a team?). Stall leaders will need to:

  • monitor and manage volunteer sign ups
  • liaise with Fete committee for purchase or hire of supplies and equipment for their stall
  • coordinate the set up and running of the stall on the day
  • report feedback about the stall after the fete

The good news is, there are instructions for each stall and protocols set up from previous fetes, so there is no need to reinvent the wheel (unless you want to, then go for gold!).

SIGN UP HERE:https://signup.com/go/LYharPR.

If you have a special skill set and a spare hour or two for a good cause, we would love your help!

  • Photographers
  • Graphic Designers
  • Social Media Moguls
  • Set up / Pack Down
  • Transit help (utes + brawn)
  • Sparkies
  • Creatives (Art / Displays)
  • MC's / Announcers
  • Performers

If you haven't already done so fill out the P&C just one thing survey and share some love! www.surveymonkey.com/r/yss2021justonething (click through to the fete section, tick/write how you'd like to help, add your details at the end and 'submit', easy peasy :-) ).

FETE DONATIONS

There are a few ways you can donate to help the fete raise funds for the school.

Fete levy

Gone are the days of shopping for contributions of soft drink and chocolates, hoping they will make it to the classroom without melting or being consumed. An optional fete levy of $10 per student will help the fete committee purchase some of the items required for the fete.

Look out on Flexischools for 'Fete items' that can be added to your cart and paid for online. If you would prefer to make a cash payment, place your money in an envelope marked with "Fete Levy" along with your child's name and class and place the envelope in the P&C payment boxes in the Grade 1 building (L block – upstairs) or Admin building (next to the tennis courts).

Free dress day – Friday, 26 February

Given it’s the school’s 150th Birthday, the student council have come up with a fun theme around history.  Mark the date in your diary and dress up as your favourite decade from the last 150 years!!  So many fun choices, we can’t wait to see some great outfits.  Children are asked to bring a gold coin donation on the day.

Pre-loved items

Pre-loved stalls are coming back to the Fete. It's a great way to clear out, recycle, reduce landfill and grab a bargain too! So start clearing out your unwanted items. We welcome donations of good quality and condition:

  • Clothing (Men's/Women's/Kid's)
  • Shoes / hats / accessories
  • Handbags / Bags
  • Toys / Board games
  • Books / DVDs
  • Sporting Equipment
  • Coat hangers / Clothes racks.

Please NO furniture, kitchenware, bric-a-brac, or linen please, due to space limitations.

Donation bins + collections

The donation bins will be located near the tuckshop (right hand side). These will be available to receive donations Mondays to Fridays. For bigger items, some upcoming weekend collections direct to the container on the oval will be announced on Facebook and parent notices.

Sorting days

Look out in parent rep notices and on Facebook for the sorting days. These are a fun morning of sorting through and categorising the items. The best part is, you can purchase items there and then (with all proceeds being donated to the Fete)!! Dibs on the best stuff!! Now that's a bit special ;-).

Pots + plants

Time to get grubby! If you are a bit of a green thumb, the plant stall will welcome donations of plants. Now is a great time to start growing seedlings or propagating plants from cuttings.  Even if you have a sad plant that's ready to retire, donate to the garden club nice and early. Our resident green thumbs can work their magic and revive the plant ready for a new home.

Any spare pots, planters or cute containers for plants you have lying around can be repurposed for the plant stall. All plant related donations can be dropped to the garden club area. There will be a marked container on the table for donations.

Running Club

Running club has commenced this term on Tuesdays, from 3:15 to 3:45 and Thursdays from 7:45 to 8:15. Mr Sutherland will hold his sessions on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:15. Remember that all of these sessions will occur on the main, or years 3-6, oval.

School Swimming

School swimming lessons will commence in week 4 (week beginning 15th February) for Year 1 to Year 6, at Yeronga Park Pool. A big thank you to Yeronga Park Pool for their cooperation in organising and teaching lessons to our Year One to Four students and for the use of the complex for our carnivals, free of charge, and our behaviour celebrations at a very friendly price.

District Swimming Trialists

Congratulations again to the following students who qualified for and represented Yeronga State School at the District Swimming Trial;

Angus W, Mitchell B, Jordy B, Matthew T, Jesse S, Toby A, Finn S, Oliver C, Liam M, Alexander C, Oliver W, Georgie B, Eady B, Martha W, Ivy V, Maggie S, Avy T, Samantha C, Abigail W, Saskia A, Ruby T, Layla B, Aggie W, Charlotte H, Amelia H & Piper V.

Congratulations again to the following students who have now also qualified for the Met West Regional Trial on the 24th of February. The students are; Angus W, Toby A, Oliver C, Liam M, Oliver W, Georgie B, Eadie B, Samantha C & Saskia A.

Senior Cross Country Day 17 March (Reserve Day: 22 March)

As we have a chance of hot, humid weather continuing we have decided to maintain extra safeguards for the impacts of heat.

As well as having drinking water on course we have scheduled a reserve day. This date is noted above. If we deem the heat predicted on the set date to make it unsafe for our students to run then we will move the cross country to our reserve day. Unfortunately we will not be able to make a decision until we are very close to the set date due to the fickleness of the weather. If our reserve day proves to be unsuitable then we will look at a selection trial involving only those wishing to attend the District Cross Country with our School Cross being delayed until the weather becomes more Autumnal.

All children will be expected, unless medically unable, to participate in the Cross Country. The children who are 8 years old will run a smaller course inside the school grounds. The children who age from 9 to 12 years will be given the option of running a long course (outside the school grounds) or a short course (within the school grounds). Those who opt for the short course will be identified by a fluorescent vest they must wear. The difference between the course options is that the long course option allows children to qualify for the Yeronga State School team for the Eastern Taipans District Cross Country, to compete to be Age Champion and to more greatly help their sporting house’s total.

Please remember that the team for the Eastern Taipans District Cross Country will not be settled for a week or more after the Yeronga State School Cross Country as we may have a number of children absent on the day and our policy is to allow those either absent due to illness or higher representative honours the opportunity to be considered for a place in teams at a later date.

Absence From Cross Country

If you know that you will be absent from the Cross Country day and are keen to have a time recorded please see Mr Bateman so that this may be done before the 10th of March. If you are ill on the day you will need to collect a form from Mr Bateman to have a time recorded after the event to be considered for District Selection. We will be using the times of the top 8 in the 10, 11 and 12 year events for comparisons.

Cross Country Day Helpers

If you would like to volunteer time to help either as a check point attendant or a finish line official your help would be most appreciated. It is always great to have extra pairs of eyes and ears available. We have been blessed, for many years, with wonderful volunteers like Ruth Bennett. Thank you Ruth for so many great years of selfless service.

Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)

The trial dates for term one of 2021 are listed below.

Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)

The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions.  Selectors  will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.

In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

Rebel Sport Community Givebacks

Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased cricket equipment, Footballs and Netballs with this credit. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself. Thanks to all of those who purchased at Rebel over the break. We have a very useful amount for equipment.

Cameron Bateman

Sports Teacher

I hope that your family has settled into the school year well.  It has already been quite eventful with the 150th Anniversary Celebrations kicking off last week.  And there is so much more to come, including

Chappy Pancakes – this coming Tuesday morning 7:30-8:30am

Support Chaplaincy and bring the whole family in to join me for a pancake breakfast on Tuesday 16 February.   Follow the yummy smell through the school, and find me outside the tuckshop.  The delicious pancakes are generously sized and are only $2 each. Juice is $1 each.   Gluten free pancakes will also be available.  Funds raised from this event will be used towards the costs of running the my free lunch program.  Please let me know if you are available to help with this event.  See you on Tuesday morning!

Free Student Lunches

One of the things that I help the school community with is a free lunch program for students who don’t have access to food, or they forget their lunch or their lunch gets ruined. Yes, that happens quite regularly!  To access the program, students can approach their teacher who will direct them to the closest source of lunches, which are spread throughout the school given that we have such a big campus.

After many years of the Chaplaincy Office solely paying for this program, a local business last year provided some sponsorship dollars to ease this cost.  And this year, the Yeronga Community Centre has also come on board to provide ready-to-go sandwiches.  So if you need any help with providing school lunches for your family, please make contact with me to discuss.  I’m here to help.

Coming up this term

16/2     Chappy Pancakes (7:30-8:30am)

8/3       “Sub and Drink Deal” Lunch

Week 10 Chappy Week fun

Blessings,

Chappy Jenny
