DATA CONVERSATIONS
Over the last two weeks, each year level and the leadership teams have met to analyse reading data for each cohort. Teams have identified the next steps to take in order to achieve our school targets of 85% of students in the Upper 2 Bands (U2B) and 100% above National Minimum Standards.
Messages I walked away with were:
- Teachers at this school have high expectations
- Teachers at this school believe every child can learn and succeed
- Teachers know their learners and are working hard to meet the child where they are at, to take them where they need to go
- Our inclusion team are partnering strongly with their year levels to help support and extend learning for all students
It is worth celebrating that nearly 50% of the Year 6 cohort are exiting our school with a reading age of 15 years and over- the point at which reading diagnostic tests stop measuring. This is a great credit to the work teachers, teacher aides and parents do to help our students develop a love of reading.
The problem of practice we are seeking to address at present is to have data where children’s writing results reflect their reading performance. Whilst variance is to be expected, we believe work in this space will help achieve greater alignment. We believe that it is through articulating their thoughts and ideas about reading that children will confidently take risks as writers. The year 6 teachers will be engaging in an inquiry cycle themselves to explore this further.
We are incredibly proud of the work we all do in helping our children to be literate, numerate and curious learners.
ECDP Assembly visit – Be a Communicator
Last week staff from the ECDP came to the Junior assembly to demonstrate how to communicate using AUSLAN. They shared a dramatic interpretation of a picture book. It was wonderful to see such a fantastic presentation and for our children to learn different ways of being a Communicator.
HOME LEARNING POLICY - CURIOSITY PROJECT
Last term Pablo from 5L created an amazing curiosity project. He was incredibly excited to share his learnings and achievement. Listening to his explanation on the process he engaged to create was all the affirmation I needed that our home learning policy is the right approach for our school at this time.
Read the following extract and look at the photo of Pablo and his creation. It captures precisely what we are trying to achieve. Be sure to encourage your children to complete Curiosity projects this term.
Yeronga State School strongly values the important role of parents as educators too. The term `domestic curriculum’ is used by Claxton and Lucas in their book `Educating Ruby’ to highlights the importance of the way parents do things that influences children’s confidence, creativity, communication skills, collaboration skills, craftsmanship and critical thinking. Home learning is about providing opportunities for parents to partner with their children to learn some non-negotiables and child interest topics. The importance of rich dialogue in deepening children’s understanding of different topics and allowing them to transfer learnings to different contexts is widely supported. The focus of home learning therefore is to foster students’ automaticity with essential foundational skills such as Reading and Maths, as well as fostering parent children partnerships by providing learning opportunities for rich dialogue and/or fostering a child’s self-regulation of learning. Student agency (voice and choice) and student engagement has been shown to increase greater ownership of their learning.

NAPLAN
Next week is NAPLAN week. Tuesday is Language Conventions (9-10am) and Writing (11:45- 12:45pm), Wednesday is Reading (9-10) and Thursday is Numeracy (9-10). The tests are between 35-45 minutes, with some time for introduction and conclusion.
Our best advice would be to keep operating like business as usual, reassuring your children that they have only to do their best and it is good enough. If you have any concerns, please contact your class teacher as soon as possible.
PREP INFORMATION SESSIONS
Last week we held our first Prep Information Sessions for the year. It was lovely to meet many of our potential parents for 2020. The Year 6 school captains articulating their thinking about learning, and what they value at Yeronga State School, is such a highlight of these sessions. If you have any friends or family who are looking to enrol for 2020, please encourage them to get their enrolment forms in asap.

Triple P “Power of Positive Parenting” Information Session and Online Program
We certainly had an impressive turn out of parents eager to hear the information shared by Karyn Healy from the University of Queensland when we recently hosted a Triple P (“Power of Positive Parenting”) information session. It was a lively gathering, with much involvement and open dialogue between parents and our presenter, who had so much wisdom to share. We certainly appreciate Karyn’s generosity in giving her time to us, as we partner between home and school in the journey of raising and educating the students of Yeronga State School. For those parents who were unable to make it to the session, or those who would like further information, Karyn Healy has forwarded a link to a Triple P Positive Parenting program, which is both free and accessible online. See below:
Uniform Reminder
A reminder to parents to ensure that all students are wearing the correct shoes to school. The expectation is for all students to wear closed black shoes, such as sports shoes or leather school shoes, with the formal dress uniform. Black or white joggers are the expected colour of joggers for the sports uniform. Laces must match the shoe colour. Please see the examples of expected shoes to be worn to school below.

Bridge Builders Information Session
The Bridge Builders program is followed at Yeronga State School with an aim to teach children strategies to address conflict effectively, so they can move through life confidently. Conflict is an unavoidable fact of life and usually occurs because of our different needs, beliefs or expectations. Resolving conflict well enables us to move more confidently through our lives and create positive and healthy environments around us. On 16 May at 6.30pm parents are invited to attend a parent education workshop on Bridge Builders. We encourage you all to participate, so you can help your children to use the strategies to resolve sibling and friendship conflict as well.
We look forward to welcoming Joceyln Chirnside will present this workshop. An RSVP link will be sent out via the Schoolzine App over the coming week. The venue is to be advised, as it is dependent on numbers attending.

Our annual Mother's Day stall is always a highlight on the school calendar. Kids love choosing a gift for their mum or special adult and we thank all families for your support.

Junior Cross Countrysnow cones
In what is a really busy time for our school, we'd like to say a big THANK YOU to the parents who have responded to the last minute call for volunteers to ensure our Junior School kids can have a snow cone after their cross country run this Wednesday, 8 May. A $2 snow cone makes all the difference to our little hot, bothered and tired people at the end of their run. This one fell off our radar and we sincerely appreciate that our school community has once again stepped up to make this happen. You are awesome, thank you!

Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, Mabo Day & Reconciliation Week, Sorry Day
Reconciliation Week is held every year between 27 May – 3 June. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June and this year that is just following our Yeronga School Fete. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
More information about Reconciliation can be found here: https://www.reconciliation.org.au/national-reconciliation-week/

Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the women in our Yeronga Community. I hope you are spoilt on Sunday, and know that you are valued and loved for who you are, and all you do for your family. It’s not always easy being a Mum, so I hope that the day brings some opportunity for joy.
A particularly important “mum” in my life is my Aunt, as my own mother passed away when I was a teenager. After a recent phone call with her, my daughter commented that I am so lucky that I have a special relationship with her. She further stated that she didn’t have “aunts” in her life that she could call if she needed to. I agreed with my daughter that I am lucky, but I encouraged her to find her “aunt” by connecting and building relationship with other women in her life. Even though I am able to call my Aunt for advice or to chat at any time, I’m only able to do that because I have spent time over many years staying connected and valuing the connection. We all need people in our lives to be in our circle of support. Do you have an “aunt” or others that you can call for advice or support in times of need? Or are you a support person for someone else who needs connection? What could you do to connect or encourage supportive relationships?

I am making a giant igloo out of 2 litre milk bottles to be a centrepiece to Chappy’s Polar Expedition for the school fete, and need about 400 of them! Your help with donations of clean and dry 2 litre bottles with their lids would be much appreciated. They can be left in the hall.

Paper Slushie Straws in the Tuckshop
The P&C wholeheartedly backed the Green Team’s proposal to switch the Tuckshop’s slushie straws from plastic to paper at last month’s P&C meeting. The Green Team want to thank the P&C for being so supportive of their initiatives!
The straws will begin to appear in the Tuckshop in the next few weeks as the old plastic ones run out. No, they’re not as tough as the plastic ones, so the kids will have to learn to be gentle with them, but they sure are much more friendly to our environment. They can be composted in the school garden compost bins.
Third party Consent
Recently we requested parental consent for the use of third party websites. It is important that our students have access to these websites as they form part of the robotics programme or are for reinforcing learning. We have risk reviews for all these websites. In order to protect our students identities as much as we can. The websites may (not necessarily) require that we use a user name and password. They are individual websites such as Sunshine Classics and World book online. As a school we use, as far as possible, generic logins or use the students Managed Internet Service id (MIS id). We would use a child’s initials reversed as their first name and the MIS id as the last name. Only teachers working in our school can access the matching child’s name on the OneSchool data base.
First name: First 2 letters of MIS id reversed
Last name: MIS iD
Class: Actual class
Year: Actual year
Email: (if applicable) MIS id
However, due to policy changes we now need parental permission to use these websites or apps because the progress data, which we believe does not identify the child, is stored in cloud services which are either overseas or owned and operated by overseas companies. Thank you to the parents who have sort clarification of this. If you still need clarification, please contact Debbie Cowie at dcowi11@eq.edu.au We need all parents to respond that they do or do not give permission. If you have not done this already please use the link below to respond.

STRINGS PROGRAM UPDATE
We’re diving into another term of rehearsals and lessons with the strings program in term 2. I’ve been impressed with the dedication and commitment to learning the year 3 beginners have shown. This has meant we’ve been able to work through their method book at a faster pace.
Strings students are preparing for two performances this term. If you’re at the school fete, listen out for the strings performances at 2:30pm. There’ll be performances from our beginners and second-year learners, a combined string ensemble and our advanced chamber strings group.
We’re also rehearsing for the school’s Winter Concert at the end of term where the junior, senior and chamber string ensembles will perform. Also at the end of this term, 2nd year strings players are looking forward to their two-day non-residential Southside Junior Strings Workshop on June 25 and 26 at Coorparoo State School.

METROPOLITAN CHORAL HONOURS CAMP
A recount by Jerusha in 6A:
Four students from our school were chosen to participate in the Metropolitan Choral Honours Program from the 25th to the 27th of March. They were Morgan, Jerusha, Cameron and Elyssa. These students were incredibly lucky to be chosen out of 100 students from the Metropolitan region. What is this program about? This program is all about interacting with a whole lot of students from different schools and about developing new choral singing skills. The first two days were spent learning our songs as a group and then we split into boy and girl groups to practice and learn our different songs. The teachers were funny and they engaged well with everyone. One of the teachers made up her own song about her cat which was funny and good to sing and hear.
On the last day of the program, we had a concert where we performed all the songs we had practiced. The seats were packed with parents and school music teachers. When we were singing, the sound was echoing in the hall and the songs were so beautiful to listen to. I would like to thank all of the music teachers including Mrs Easey for encouraging and supporting us and for giving us this wonderful opportunity to enjoy and have fun with singing.
A note from Mrs Easey:
I had the honour of attending the final performance on the evening of the 27th and was absolutely amazed at the level of skill that was demonstrated by the students. All performers had only 3 days to learn and memorise up to ten songs which they often sang in 2-3 part harmonies, sometimes with actions and sometimes in other languages. Our students should be immensely proud of themselves. They represented Yeronga State School exceptionally well and have embraced the opportunity that was given to them to extend their musical skills. Well done!
UPCOMING PERFORMANCES
The Yeronga State School Fete
On Saturday May 25, the Senior Band, Strings groups and Junior and Senior Choir students are expected to perform at the Yeronga State School Fete. The schedule of performances is as follows:

4:00 – 4:15pm – Senior Band perform
All applicable performers will receive a note with more detailed information soon but please reserve these times now.
The Combined Winter Showcase
The Combined Winter Showcase will occur on at the Yeronga State High School Hall. The Showcase will commence at 6pm and all of our ensembles (except the P-1 Piccolo Choir) will be performing. Therefore, if your child is a member of Stella Voce, the Cosmio Singers, Senior Band, Junior Band, Brandenburg Strings or Stradivari Strings, please save this date in your calendars.
Classroom Music
Currently, every year level is immersed in the formal assessment process where they are either composing, performing or responding to music they perform or listen to. This week’s current focus is on the Prep year level.
Prep
Prep students are currently completing their first singing assessment task. In every lesson, students have been practicing singing using their ‘high’ singing voices (as opposed to singing with a speaking-type chest voice). They have been learning how to listen and sing in tune, small songs with a 2-3 note range, pitch-matching their own voices to my singing voice. To prepare for their assessment task, students were asked to improvise a word that describes how they may feel before drawing a matching facial expression onto a paper plate. Students then sang the song ‘Hey Hey, Look at Me’ for their class, adding in their improvised word into the correct place. I am so proud of how these Prep children are singing so bravely and confidently for their friends. Check out some of their wonderful faces:

Yours in Music,
Lauren Easey
