FINISH STRONG!
This week on assembly I spoke to the Year 3-6 students about finishing strongly. I have used the analogy with our students of finishing the year like it is a running race. It is important that they give 100% until they are across the finish line and not to stop or slow down a few metres short. As always, we will maintain our high expectations of student effort, attendance and behaviour, every day.
It is also that time of the year when students have the opportunity to demonstrate and apply their skills, knowledge and deep understandings. Even though we can see the holidays on the distant horizon, it is the most important time of the year as students complete culminating learning activities that connect their learning and experiences from the academic year. Essentially, it is a time for our students to show us how far they have come and the academic distance they have travelled. We don’t just want to finish the year, we want to finish strong!
The end of the year sees many school events including Graduation, Awards Ceremonies, School Disco and the Christmas concert. Be sure to check the calendar so you don’t miss anything. We look forward to seeing many of you at these events and celebrating a successful 2019 with you. Hopefully you can finish strongly too!
CLASSES- 2020
Class Allocations for 2020 are progressing well. Parents and children will be advised on Wednesday 22 January class teachers for 2020. Publishing early in the year helps us to determine more accurate enrolment numbers for each cohort as this seems to change daily with some enrolments in and out. At present it appears that we will have 31 classes, including five Preps.
CLASS PARENT REPRESENTATIVE SCHEME
In 2020 we will be again seeking two parents for each classroom to be the parent representatives for that class. The role of the Parent Rep is to strengthen the parent-school partnership, create a welcoming class atmosphere for new families and promote parent involvement within our school. Class teachers will be looking for parent representatives for their classrooms early in the new school year. If you have not done this role yet, I encourage you to be involved as it is a wonderful opportunity to contribute meaningfully.
Thank you to all the class parent representatives this year and the coordinator, Jodie Swan, for the excellent manner in which you have helped connect our families, students and school. Jodie’s weekly Parent Rep e-mail is an integral and highly valued communication to set families up for success at school. Well done, Jodie!
TENNIS PROGRAM OF EXCELLENCE
Next year RISE and Yeronga State School will offer an opportunity for some students to participate in the Tennis program of excellence. Selected children will have the opportunity to access lessons between 9am – 3pm, at times that will not disrupt their academic program. Parents will have to pay a fee for their children to be in the program. Invitations will be sent out to selected students’ parents in the next week or so, including attending an information session to gain more insight.
PAST STUDENT CELEBRATIONS - SPANISH EXCELLENCE
Congratulations to past student Tiggy Taylor who received the Year 7 Spanish Academic Award for the Spanish Immersion class at Indooroopilly State High School. We are always delighted to hear of our past students’ achievements. We also appreciate the great foundation our whole school Spanish program is providing for our students to develop deeper cultural understandings and a love of language learning.
SCHOOLS UPDATE MESSAGES
Vaccination is the best protection against measles
Measles is circulating in South East Queensland. Measles is highly infectious and can have serious complications such as pneumonia (lung infection) and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). You need two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine to be protected. Check your own and your child’s vaccination history with your GP today. Early symptoms include fever, runny nose, tiredness and sore red eyes. This is followed by a blotchy red rash, which often starts on the face before becoming widespread. If your school-age child is unwell, keep them at home, seek medical advice, and contact the school to let them know. For more information, visit Queensland Health or call 13HEALTH.
Tough times?
Make time to talk, get tips to support your children through tough times with Triple P – Positive Parenting Program: it’s free in Queensland.
Do you really know your online friends?
The Queensland Family and Child Commission has launched the #doiknowu campaign to raise awareness of the behaviours that lead to online grooming. It educates young people, parents and carers to recognise, respond and avoid the trap of doing something they don’t want to do by highlighting the tactics predators use to engage young people. A range of resources are available to help young people stay safe online.
We say: not now, not ever, together
The Queensland Government is committed to the elimination of domestic and family violence. The Government’s Third Action Plan - ‘Not now, Not ever, together’ highlights that by taking action and working together, we can end domestic and family violence in our communities. Our school is committed to modelling and building relationships that are based on equality and respect, free from violence and abuse. You play a critical role in teaching respect. More information and access to support services for domestic violence are available on the Queensland Government website.
FUN MUDDA
Fun Mudda is a wonderful tradition at Yeronga as the Term 4 Behaviour celebrations for Year 3-6. The extremely dry conditions this year means that we have decided not to have this event. We are all extremely disappointed however we know this is the most ethical thing to do. We are currently working on a plan to replace this event and will endeavour to create something memorable. Please understand that we have not come to this decision lightly and we so wish it would rain a lot in the next two weeks, and then we may be able to reconsider.
Debbie Spanner
Principal
The focus of the last few weeks has been on starting to make plans for 2020, with our Prep Orientation morning and Student Leadership selection processes. It has been impressive and humbling to observe the growing confidence of our YSS students as they take risks, embrace new challenges and see setbacks as an opportunity for further growth.
Remembrance Day
The recent Remembrance Day commemorations held by the Stephen’s RSL branch were a memorable way to mark one hundred and one years since Armistice and the end of World War One. Our School Captains were a part of the wreath laying ceremony and Morgan from Year Six shared her winning entry from the recent writing competition with the crowd gathered at Yeronga Memorial Park. It was certainly a remarkable and moving occasion.

We can’t wait to be a part of the multitude of end of year events over the coming weeks, including:

Free Dress Day
The Student Council are holding a Free Dress Day this Friday 22 November and the theme is “Free Dress” (i.e. student’s own choice). Students will need to ensure that they are wearing closed in shoes and shirts with sleeves for sun protection. Gold coin donations brought in on that day will go towards future Student Council projects including water coolers and new wooden seats for eating areas.

It will be wonderful to recognise the efforts our students in meeting their learning goals throughout 2019, during the last week of Term Four.
The dates for the Awards Ceremonies are:

Active School Travel
Thank you to all the parents, teachers and students who make a conscious choice to actively travel to school. Not only is it good for our bodies but it is also wonderful to alleviate the traffic congestion around the school.
This last week has been a big week in the AST realm. The children enjoyed walking to school, scootering at lunchtime on the tennis courts and a scooter prize was drawn.
The winner of the $250 Scooter prize that was donated by Nicole Johnston is Tiago from P2.
Congratulations Tiago and we hope you have fun on the scooter over the holidays.
Outdoor Classroom Day – Thursday 7 November
Outdoor Classroom Day is a global campaign to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning and play.
Outdoor learning improves children’s health, engages them with learning and leads to a greater connection with nature. Play not only teaches critical life skills such as resilience, teamwork and creativity, but is central to children’s enjoyment of childhood.

Seeking quotes to upgrade old netball court oval
The P&C is working with the school in an effort to source funding to upgrade the 'old netball courts' oval behind the school hall, YOSHC , music building and the library. This will involve grading the degraded bank/hill that leads from the school buildings to the oval, removing the existing grass/ground cover, and adding top soil and new grass to the whole area.
Before we can proceed, quotes are needed to carry out the work. Please contact the P&C at ysspandcpresident@gmail.com for more information or to make a time to view the area for quoting purposes.

Swimming has Commenced
Swimming lessons are being held at the times stated in the permission note. Please remember to refer to the equipment list on the permission note so that your children have everything they need for their lessons. Children should have a complete change of clothes, swimming togs including a rashie for lessons, goggles (essential), towel, sunscreen, bathing cap (essential), deodorant (for older students) and flip flops or thongs (much preferred). Rashies are not required for races at carnivals, but students should cover up when not racing.
Swimming Carnivals
Preparations are beginning for these very important events on the Yeronga State School Calendar. Students need to be thinking, from the commencement of lessons, exactly which events they would like to compete in as once the program is written there will be very little time for changes. If children wish to withdraw from events that they can swim they will need parental permission. A form will be uploaded to the school web page for this purpose. Please remember that as the carnival will be held in the 25m pool at Yeronga Park there should be little concern over the completion of 50m events.
We will, as always, require parental support in the form of officials to make these carnivals run efficiently. If you are able to help please contact Mr Bateman via email; cbate12@eq.edu.au. We have been very fortunate, over the years, to have outstanding parental contributions from people like Ruth Bennet and we hope that this tradition continues.
On a lighter note the big question is; who can end Lawson’s 8 year dominance in swimming? Can Kendall, who are winless this year? Can Evans, who won the Athletics? Could Paterson, who are yet to chalk up a win this year? Only time will tell.
Logistics of the Senior Swimming Carnival
Assistance needed to set up at Yeronga Park Swimming Pool from 7.30am Please (on bended knees)!
Please advise and remind children of their age for the carnival i.e. the age they turned or will turn this year e.g. Born in 2007 = 12 years.

All events will be swum in the 25m pool. 25m swimmers, if in the shallow lanes, will slide in before the starter commences, hold the end of the pool and then push off the when the whistle goes. They must leave the pool immediately upon finishing their race and then wait at the end of their lane for the judges to record their placing.

Parent helpers
We need about 6 parent helpers for each time slot. 4 Judges and 2 Ribbon writers. Please see either your class teacher or contact Mr Bateman at cbate12@eq.edu.au if you can assist.
The Rationale
Due to the large number of students in Year 1, the limited shade available at the venue and the range of swimming ability across the student group, we have tried to create a program that gives all students an insight into what they may experience in the years to come at the senior carnival. We are again using several innovations including mid pool blocks for the kickboard races and noodles to assist students.
Sno cones!!!!!!!!!!
All students will have the opportunity to buy a sco cone for $2. All money needs to be given to the class teacher the day before the swimming carnival. The sno cones will be given out after second break at school, for the year ones when all classes have returned from the pool, and on the following day at first break for the year twos.
Rebel Sport Community Kickbacks
Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased cricket equipment, Footballs and Netballs with this credit. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms.
Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

Family Connection
How do families connect and stay strong? Like anything that’s important in life, thought and planning needs to happen to help build family connection so that everyone feels valued, loved, and has a sense of belonging. As the holidays are quickly approaching, here are two ideas that you might want to think about…
Through Celebration:
“The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.” – Oprah Winfrey
Celebrations bring families together (often around food) and offer opportunity to bond and strengthen the relationships within the family unit. In my family, we’ve had a year of many celebrations – 20th, 50th and 80th birthdays, important anniversaries, a graduation ceremony, and even a baptism. Around each of these events, we have come together as a family to celebrate and honour the individuals, but it has also helped to encourage connection as a family by spending quality time together. But it’s not just through those significant moments, but also in celebrating all the little milestones along the way as well. Both big and small celebrations help families connect. What is your next family celebration?
Through Fun:
“A happy family is but an earlier heaven” – George Bernard Shaw
Having fun, organising wonderful adventures, and creating joyful moments will bring families together. Routines are important, but space for fun surprises and unexpected joys will create great memories that will be treasured throughout all of life. The summer holidays gives families lots of time for fun and adventure. What have you got planned?
I hope that in the coming holidays that you find many opportunities to have special times that are both fun and celebrate your family.
Blessings,
Jennifer Bennett

Nude Food Winners
Nude Food Day a few weeks ago was an incredible success with 419 students bringing no rubbish to school at all. On the day, we introduced our new ‘Plastic bottles, cans and poppers’ crate for students to recycle their 10c containers. If you see these around, please use them so we can earn lots of money for our school!
We also introduced a compost or food waste bin. At lunchtime, the students were invited to visit our School Garden to pot their own seedling to take home. At least 50 students went home with a new seedling… we hope they’re growing well! We want to encourage students to compost their food scraps and grow their own food to reduce waste.
We also had some great prizes up for grabs from our generous sponsors The Source Bulk Foods at West End. Here are our senior, junior and class prize winners! We hope you enjoy your goodies!
