Dear Families,
Firstly, how wonderful it is to be back with our wonderful students, staff and families. I did miss you all very much while I was on leave. I am sincerely grateful to Mr Perry Trattos who lead the school with enthusiasm and zest over Term 3. I know Perry was immensely proud to serve this incredible school community and will hold dear the relationships forged over his time here. I believe the school is better for his time here and thankful for the positive impact he made in such a short time. I also acknowledge our exceptional senior leadership team, teaching and non-teaching staff who progressed our school strategic plan, ensuring the wellbeing and educational progress of our children. I look forward to meeting up with you all again over the coming weeks.
For the majority of our families to know your children are expertly cared for and educated during the school day is comfort and reassurance enough. What some may not know is the professional reputation that Yeronga State School holds within the educational community. YSS for many years has been an active member of the Curiosity and Powerful Learning (CPL) coalition of schools. We engage in professional collaboration with Craigslea, Nundah, Indooroopilly, Fig Tree Pocket, Amberley and Graceville State Schools on a regular basis throughout the school year. CPL is our informing framework for school improvement, pedagogical practice and student engagement in learning. It is informed by four whole school theories of action. These are;
- prioritise high expectations and authentic relationships
- emphasise inquiry focused teaching
- adopt consistent teaching protocols
- adopt consistent learning protocols
As a coalition of schools we work together to lift the performance of each of our schools through professional collaboration, collective efficacy, regular classroom visits, collegial observation and feedback. Our collective vision is to prepare our students to be agentic learners and globally competent citizens who make a positive difference to the world. At the heart of this is curiosity! What are you curious about? What sparks in you a sense of wonder and awe! What thinking might you share with your child that builds a culture of curiosity in the home?
The school fence has now been constructed. Yet to be completed is the automation and timing of gate opening and closing times. I will communicate the changes as soon as possible. It is sad that the historical community access to the school grounds will cease outside of school hours once this has been finalised, however I know you understand that the safety of our children and staff and families whilst attending school is our priority. We will continue to do what we can to make these changes in consideration of all stakeholders Authorised access such as before and after school activities and events will continue outside of school hours of course.
Have a wonderful week,
Eunice

PREP 2024 INFORMATION SESSION
Thank you to all the families that attended the Prep 2024 group discussions with their children who will be attending Yeronga State School next year. It was lovely to meet the families and welcome them into the Yeronga learning community. Please note that there is a Prep 2024 Stay and Play, tomorrow morning from 7:30 – 8am in the Prep playground. Mrs Freeman and Mrs Quinn will be there to say hello!!
2024 CLASS ALLOCATIONS
Thank you to everyone who put forward a class allocation preference for 2024 – the opportunity to place a class allocation to Mrs Freeman has now closed. These preferences will be taken into consideration as there are many factors that teachers take into consideration when allocating your child into a class.
WHOLE SCHOOL SUSTAINABILITY DAY
Wednesday of Week 10, the whole school engaged in a sharing session around our Inquiry big concept for the term ‘Sustainability’. It was lovely to see the Prep children sharing about how to care for their special places and the Year 4 children were amazed at how much knowledge the Prep children were able to share with the them. Each class had the opportunity to share their learnings with another year level (Round 1) and then each class had the opportunity to learn from another class (Round 2). The children were able to change the purpose of their learning to suit the year level that was coming in to learn. It was lovely to see new relationships and learning opportunities for the future occur between classes.
Student Leadership Nomination Processes 2024
In week 10 last term, students in year 5 embarked on the first step of their student leadership journey with a expert panel. As they prepare for nominations of student leadership positions this term, the students heard from staff across the school about the qualities of a good student leader. Thank you to our panellists; Mr Trattos, Mrs Freeman, Mrs Quinn, Mrs Southwell, Mrs Mitchell, Mr Petersen and Mr Landbeck! Key qualities of a good student leader included: respect, leaving a legacy, service before self, lead by example, encouragement, using the learner assets and being kind and fair.
Year 5 students this week met with Miss Kirk for their second student leadership orientation session, and will be nominating for formal leadership positions over the next 3 weeks. For more information on the student leadership nomination processes, please see the student handbook (link below).

Upcoming Swimming Carnivals
As always we will need parental help staffing these carnivals. We are fortunate that the parent body has always been very generous in volunteering time. For the Senior (Years 3 – 6) Carnival we will need timers. For the Junior (Years 1 & 2) Carnival we will need marshalls / checkstarters. If you can help please email Mr Bateman; cbate12@eq.edu.au .
Football Goals
Please remember, that although these goals are metal, they are not built to be climbed upon. Please do not climb on them as you will be endangering yourself, damaging the goals and be the unhappy recipient of a white slip.
Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)
The trial dates for terms Three and Four of 2023 are listed below.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy (Years 4 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being regularly among the best 3 or 4 players for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
Rebel Sport Community Givebacks
Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment and nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased Footballs and Netballs with this credit this term. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself. Thanks to all of those who purchased at Rebel over the break. We have a very useful amount for equipment.
Important Sporting Dates Term 3 & Term 4, 2023
10 – 11 October – Qld State Schools Athletics
20 October – District Triathlon Trials (11-19 Yrs) Paper Nomination
28 – 29 October – Regional Triathlon Trials (11 – 19 Yrs)
27 November – Yeronga State School Senior Swimming Carnival (Yrs 3 – 6)
28 November – Yeronga State School Junior Swimming Carnival (Yrs 1 & 2)
Welcome back to term 4. I hope that you and your family had a refreshing holiday and are ready to finish the year strong. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance in making it through the rest of the year. I’m here to help and to encourage you, particularly when life is tough.
Shout out for Donations
As you clear out school supplies and uniforms towards the end of this term, consider what you might be able to donate. There are a number of opportunities where you can be generous and give back to support families in our very own school community:
Uniforms & Shoes – spare uniforms are required for children who have accidents while at school, or for those who can’t afford to purchase. Black school shoes are very much in demand and all sizes would be much appreciated.
Exercise books and stationery – regularly accessed throughout the year for those who don’t have the required classroom consumables.
Gift hampers – there are many that need a bit of cheer and help towards Christmas or just to restock their pantries. Baskets to collect donations will be available in the office foyer until Friday 25 November. Goods should be non-perishable special foods items (not your usual pantry items), gifts (books, small toys, games, etc) and decorative items (serviettes, bon-bons, decorations, etc.). Why not make a purchase each week for the next five weeks?
Blessings, Chappy Jenny

Tuck shop volunteers needed - just two hours of your day, week, year! 9-11am, Thursdays or Fridays are the busy days!
There’s nothing worse than hungry kids! We are really desperate for help to fill those empty tums. Regular volunteers are amazing but we know that for some people, you get a free morning once in a blue moon so we love our one-off volunteers as well. If everyone helped just one morning a year we could keep the hungry kids at bay and our tuck shop convener would be one very happy lady. So, pick a date, email tuckshop@yerongasspandc.org.au and have some fun with fellow parents over a sarnie or 10!

The next P and C Meeting is Tuesday 17th October 7pm in the library. We would love to see you there!
Uniform Shop
The uniform is always grateful for any 2nd hand uniform donations but at present we are requesting any smaller sized items in preparation of the Prep fittings that will take place during the month of November. So, if you are doing a SPRING CLEAN then we would love to accept any UNDAMAGED, UNSOILED and GOOD QUALITY uniforms that you don’t need anymore. Thank you for helping us to recycle and repurpose clothing items which not only helps the environment by reducing landfill but also helps out any families in need.
