YSS Excellence Program
At Yeronga State School, our core values are “all students are successful when they are learning, growing, caring and achieving”.
As part of our Yeronga State School Inclusion Team, we are introducing The YSS Excellence Program, aimed at supporting our students who are classified as gifted and talented/twice exceptional. The students identified for this program have gained a classification through a psychologist assessment.
Alongside the implementation of the YSS Excellence Program, the YSS Excellence in Development program will support students who are showing a high level of academic potential through the whole school data collection process. Students will be supported in class to extend ideas and deepen conceptual understandings around learning that is occurring in the classroom.
The school is excited to continue to enhance and differentiate the curriculum for all students through our inquiry based approach to learning.

SZapp - Have you downloaded it?
Dear Parents
We'd like to remind families that the Szapp is a very important app to have on your phone for school updates. This is the primary way the school will communicate urgent messages to all families.
If you haven't downloaded the app to your phone please do so via the instructions below.
We hope everyone can have access to this to ensure everyone receives all the necessary information on time.
Year 4 Camp - Payment Due Tomorrow
Dear Parents
Tomorrow is the final day to pay for Year 4 camp. Invoices were sent home via rbenn127@eq.edu.au.
The student's packing guide can be found on the szapp under 'Forms and Documents'.
If you make payment on Friday evening please ensure you keep the payment receipt.
Stop, Kiss & Go - 2 min Zone
Dear Families
This is a reminder that during school pick up, no vehicle should be park or left unattended at the Stop, Kiss & Go area. This is a 2 min zone and must be kept moving so all families can safely collect their students from school.
We appreciate everyone's cooperation with this.
Kind regards,
Office
Dear Parents
Transport network planners from both Translink and Transport for Brisbane (a division of Brisbane City Council) review bus services provided for school travel.
As a result, 803, 818, 857 and 898 routes will be modified. The changes predominantly remove elongated, duplicated and unused sections of the routes. The changes to services will be made available within Translink’s Journey Planner two weeks prior to the start of Term 3 2021. Students will need to re-plan their journeys accordingly.
Any questions related to school travel can be directed to TransLink via telephone on ph. 13 12 30 or via other methods using the links available at https://translink.com.au/contact-us.

Strategies to Help…
Are you struggling with life and all the challenges and difficulties that come your way? While we can’t stop those difficult times from coming, we can implement strategies to help us through them, and even to build our emotional resilience and improve our mental health. A recent “Question of the Week” around school is an example of a strategy that could be helpful… “What are you most thankful for in your life?” Having gratitude has been proven to help you to be more optimistic and feel better about life. It helps you to appreciate what you already have and to feel satisfied.
In my year 4 “Friends” lessons each week, I begin the class by asking the students to write down their happy thought for the week. It’s about finding something simple that has brought them joy and happiness, realising that they don’t have to wait for the grand and momentous occasions to feel happy. It’s about learning that even if it has been a tough week or not everything is going so smoothly, there are still good things in our lives, and we can find happiness in the simple joys of life. At the beginning of the program the students generally struggled to come up with their happy thought. Now that we are eight weeks in, they do this simple exercise quite quickly and have found it a rewarding moment.
So do you need to be proactive to help you a tough time? Of course, please seek professional help if needed, or even check in with me if I can help. But also consider… What are you most thankful for in your life? And what are the simple pleasures in your week that bring you joy?

Book Fair is on again this year
Book fair is great way for our library to fundraise and get more books for our library. It is a no obligation fair, so there is no expectation that parents have to buy books. However, due to the generosity of parents in the past we have been able to top up our library with many new books, as we receive a percentage of the profits.

Year 1 Science
In Science, Grade One has been exploring materials and how they change. We contacted Aren, who is an expert in natural fibre craft. She demonstrated how she uses natural materials and changes the shape with the help of water and weaving. Aren taught us about how she uses branches from a willow tree, banana fibre, and even seaweed to soak, weave and create. We then got to have our own turn at creating. Thank you Aren for a wonderful, hands-on learning experience.

National Reconciliation Week
Recently National Reconciliation Week (NRW) was held in Australia. NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
This years theme was ‘More than a word. Reconciliation takes action’. All of us can take positive steps to help achieve reconciliation. Check out these 20 Actions you can take for Reconciliation in 2021
We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.
You may wish to get involved through our new ‘Friends of Kalari’ group where we’ll discuss Indigenous perspectives and themes through a book / film club – if you’re interested email kalari.yss@gmail.com
Yuggera word of the week
At the YSS fete a group of first nations children from YSS presented a dance to thank the country, after local Yuggera elder and traditional owner Uncle Des Sandy conducted a welcome to country.
Our Yuggera words of the week are gibarr (gib-bah) which means boy and yurumkin (yar-um-kin) which means girl.
What is Kalari?
Kalari means ‘message stick’ in Yuggera language and is name of the YSS Indigenous Working Group.
Kalari aims to increase the acknowledgement and celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history at YSS, through an inclusion of Indigenous perspectives and in line with the YSS school values.
Kalari is made up of Indigenous and non-Indigenous volunteer parents. For more information contact Aren Healy at mamaaren101@gmail.com

Representative Sport Congratulations
Rugby Union
Well done to Tom C and Maggie S who were selected in the District Rugby team and the Met West possible probable.
AFL
Martha W and Amelie S had a great experience in Cairns at Qld Schools AFL. I am certain they did themselves and the school credit through their performances. Amelie, in particular, had a great carnival and was named captain of Met West (Regional Team) and was also named in the Qld team. This is a rare honour. She is our first AFL state representative, our first state representative this year. In a good year we have had two state representatives. She could well be our only state representative. Congratulations to Amelie and her family on her well-deserved honour.
Athletics Record Breakers to 15 June 2021
Congratulations to the following students on their amazing achievements. I was privileged to see the 1500m and the strategy and pace of the athletes was at a very high level. Some races were as exciting as watching Sebastian Coe and Steve Kram battle it out in the 1980’s. I also saw Maggie S break the 17-year-old 12 years girls discus record and Hunter S break the 11 years boys discus record. They were tremendous to watch.

Senior (Years 3 – 6) Cross Country Day 25 June (9-11)
All children will be expected to participate in the Cross Country unless medically unable or parental permission is withdrawn in writing. The children who are 8 years old will run a smaller course inside the school grounds. The children who age from 9 to 12 years will be given the option of running a long course (outside the school grounds) or a short course (within the school grounds). Those who opt for the short course will be identified by a fluorescent vest they must wear. The difference between the course options is that the long course option allows children to compete to be Age Champion and to help their sporting house’s total to a much greater extent.

Cross Country Day Helpers
If you would like to volunteer time to help either as a check point attendant or a finish line official your help would be most appreciated. It is always great to have extra pairs of eyes and ears available. We have been blessed, for many years, with wonderful volunteers like Ruth Bennett. Thank you Ruth for so many great years of selfless service.
Rebel Sport Community Givebacks
Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased cricket equipment, Footballs and Netballs with this credit. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself. Thanks to all of those who purchased at Rebel over the break. We have a very useful amount for equipment.
