Yeronga Newsletter - Week 1 / Term 4

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome back to the last term of the year. I trust that all students were able to have a rest and recharge for the dash to the end. I was pleased to be able to put the laptop away for a week and let my mind clear in preparation for the new term.

Term 4 in all schools are very busy and it is no different in Yeronga. This year, the events and celebrations will be different as we respond to the COVID restriction. For each event, there will be a COVID plan and we will let the community know in advance. I would like to thank everyone for being supportive and respectful of these processes.

Tracy Freeman, Deputy Principal for the Junior school is on leave for the first two weeks of this term. I would like to welcome Clare Triggell to the role in an acting capacity for this duration.

Congratulations P&C

Fantastic news and well deserving. The P&C have been selected as a 'Band 9' finalist for the 2020 P&C of the Year Awards.

  • My school provided me useful information on how my child will stay COVID safe while at school: 93.9% agreement
  • My school provided me useful information on changes to usual school routines (e.g. changes to drop off/pick up points, staggered lunch breaks etc): 95.9%
  • My child found online education websites and apps useful: 77.9%
  • My child was supported to return to school and continue their lessons: 92.7%
  • This is a good school: 96.8%

Student responses:

  • My teacher(s) explained what was required with my school work: 92.2%
  • I found pre-recorded videos and lessons, including on television useful: 82.6%
  • My school supported me to return to classroom learning: 88%
  • This is a good school: 94.3%

This information gives us something to reflect on and build on.

Quadrennial School Review (QSR)

In preparation for the QSR, we conducted another survey and a forum for parents. Thank you to the parents who responded to the survey or who attended the forum run by Steve Frances. Staff and upper school students also had an opportunity to participate in this form of consultation. The feedback will be collated by a steering group and shared with the community.

Boarding House

A few other important things have occurred over the holidays. The P&C presidents, Kym and Hamish and I met with personnel from the Regulatory Services Housing, Homelessness and Sport, Department of Housing and Public Works to discuss issues arising from the boarding house on Park Road. The matter continues to be a concern for the school and community and we will continue to advocate for the safety of our students. Please report any incidents that are of concern to us, providing specific details and the police incident report number.

Dental Building

There has been progress with the dental building. Prior to the school holidays, architects and builders came to tour the building and submit their interest as the work will go to tender. This part of the procurement process is managed by the department.

Student Leadership dates

Student leadership is a very important part of developing self-managers and motivated global citizens. We have high expectations for all students, especially the senior students. Some students would like to push themselves to the next step and nominate for a position in the school’s student leader structure. This is a thorough and fair process. Details of the criteria and the process will be shared with students in Year 5, in the weeks to come. Students also have the opportunity to shine on camp that requires them to step outside their comfort zone.

Here’s hoping that our Yeronga State School families have all enjoyed the school holidays and are all geared up for an eventful and productive Term Four. We look forward to working closely with you all to achieve success for our students throughout the term.

Mrs Tracy Freeman is taking Long Service Leave for the first two and a half weeks of Term 4. Mrs Clare Triggell is looking forward to stepping in to the role of acting Deputy Principal across Prep- Year Two during this time.

HELP YOUR CHILD HANDLE UPS AND DOWNS, INCLUDING ONLINE- TRIPLE P PROGRAM

We all do our best to supervise our children’s online activities, but this Triple P – Positive Parenting Program seminar offers tips on how to develop your child’s ability to cope with problems, now and in the future, in real-life and online. The seminar is fun and friendly and only 60 minutes long, it’s FREE, and it’ll help kids AND parents take the drama out of family life (including screen time), and deal with issues calmly and more confidently. Be a part of a free online program called "Raising Resilient Children" (Focus on Cyberbullying) which is being run by Triple P on Tuesday 27th October 2020, from 6:30pm – 7:30pm. Don’t miss out - book in now at: https://www.triplep-parenting.net.au/qld-uken/cyberbullying/.

10,000 STEPS YSS STAFF CHALLENGE

You may notice many of our Yeronga State School staff ‘out and about’ wearing pedometers, which will measure their daily physical activity. They are taking part in a five week 10,000 Steps Team Tournament, with the aim of walking at least 10,000 steps each day. It’s great to see that so many of our staff are keen to take part and be active role models for our students. No doubt there will be lots of fun (and friendly rivalry) as the staff encourage each other in this team challenge.

‘FENCE’ PEOPLE OF YSS- 150th PROJECT

Students across the school were thrilled to have the opportunity to take part in this exciting project last term. Our sincere thanks to the Tape family and the band of willing parent volunteers who have made this unique project possible, in readiness for the 150th year celebrations in 2021. We cannot wait to see the new additions to the iconic collection of “Fence” people go up around the school perimeter!

ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVEL DAY

Just a reminder that every Wednesday is Active School Travel Day.  We are starting to notice that actively travelling to school is starting to pick up again – this is wonderful to see.  Winners of the interschool weekly competition get to hold the coveted gold start trophy for two weeks.  Let us see who will be next gold star travelling class!

BALLGAMES

Thank you to Mr Bateman for organising a successful Ballgames Day during the final week of Term 3. The array of class costumes were fabulous and the level of participation and excitement on the day was high.

CLASS ALLOCATIONS 2021

  • Prep interviews for 2021 started last term. If you or someone you know is yet to enrol, please do so ASAP.
  • It would be much appreciated if parents could let the school office know if their child will not be returning to YSS in 2021. Please complete the online form - CLICK HERE or send through this information to admin@yerongass.eq.edu.au.
  • Student class allocations for 2021 will commence shortly. Classes are formed relying upon teachers’ tacit knowledge and understanding of each student’s individual needs. Our teachers know students best in the school context and our process will be driven by the discernment of our experienced teachers and school leaders, with an understanding of students’ individual needs and also the needs across the cohort, to establish classes for 2021. Parents will be told which class their child is in before the commencement of school in Term 1, 2021. If you have any information of an educational nature you would like us to consider when we decide where to place your child for 2021, please write to Mrs Paynter (kpayn3@eq.edu.au) by Friday 9 October.  Any information received after this date may not be able to be considered.

We wish you and your child/ren all the best for the first two weeks of Term 4.

Kate Paynter and Clare Triggell

2021 Senior shirt orders

Senior shirt order forms were given to all grade 5 students by P&C Uniform Shop Convenor, Yvonne Starr, in term 3. The deadline for orders is THIS Friday, 9 October 2020. Should the order form not have arrived home, please collect from the Uniform Shop, or email Yvonne ASAP at yerongassuniformshop@gmail.com.

Tuckshop now open Tuesdays

In response to feedback provided by our school community through the P&C Planning Survey, we are trialling opening the Tuckshop on Tuesdays from week 1 in term 4. Orders can now be made via Flexischools and our Tuckshop convenors, Yvonne and Stacey, are excited to be able to feed our children for an extra day each week.

Volunteers play a huge role in ensuring our Tuckshop menu is as affordable as possible for our school community. If you are willing and able to help in the Tuckshop on Tuesdays please email yerongasstuckshop@gmail.com. Tuesdays in term 4 will be a great opportunity for new volunteers to learn the ropes as we expect this will initially be the quietest day of the week. Volunteering is fun and a great way to get to know fellow YSS family members. Our kids also get a kick out of seeing family members helping at school. No experience is needed!

'Gingerbread fence people': Seeking volunteers to add final touches - 17 and 24 October

Term 4 provides a great opportunity for school community members to come together to help with final stages of the 2020 'gingerbread fence people' project.

The next stage is 'touch ups and outlines' for the designs painted by YSS children in term 3. Enjoy an afternoon of light painting and chat with fellow YSS family members while adding minor enhancements (outlines) to the designs of the students (no changes will be made to students' designs). No expertise is required, just a steady hand. Please wear clothes for painting and sign up for your preferred time here: www.signup.com/go/mnpBbsF. The 'final touches' working bee will be held at the home of YSS family, Sue and Jeremy Tape, and the address will be emailed to everyone who signs up to help.

The final 'fence people' volunteering opportunity will be to add the 'fence people' to the fence! This working bee will be held at school over two Saturdays - 14 and 21 November and volunteers can sign up here: www.signup.com/go/SnAFdhw.

YOSHC Manager changes

On Friday, 2 October, we said 'a huge thank you, goodbye and best wishes' to immediate past YOSHC Director, Charlee, who is embarking on the next stage of her career as a teacher. On behalf of the P&C and all families who access the YOSHC service, we sincerely thank Charlee for her 5.5 years of service caring for YSS children, including nearly two as YOSHC Director.

The P&C is currently recruiting for a new YOSHC Manager to lead the service - information about the role is available at:

YSS P&C a finalist in 2020 P&C of the Year Awards

Our Yeronga State School P&C has been named a 'Band 9 Finalist' in the 2020 P&C of the Year Awards! This is a great acknowledgement of our amazing school community and the contribution made by the P&C to our school over many years. According to P&C's Queensland, ours was one of several outstanding nominations received which outlined the hard work and dedication of P&C teams across Queensland and the extraordinary benefits realised for students and school communities.

To enter we needed to provide:

  • an essay that detailed our most successful P&C activity or achievement and how it has added value to our school and/or community - we chose to describe how our community united to air condition our whole school from 2015 to 2019, and you can read our entry here.
  • a digital presentation to promote our P&C and its activities to the school community - this is available on the home page of our P&C website: www.yerongasspandc.org.au/.

P&C of the Year Award winners will be announced at a gala awards night in Brisbane on Friday, 6th November. We'll be sure to let you know the final outcome!

Athletics Trial Information

Running Club

Running club has re-commenced this term, Mondays and Tuesdays 3:15 – 3:45,  but only students whose parents can collect or deliver them, in person or through YOSHC, should attend. This condition is necessary to ensure the safety of the children. Mr Sutherland will re-commence his sessions also this week. They are held on Friday mornings from 7:45 to 8:15.

School Swimming

School swimming lessons will commence, for Prep to Year 6,  at Yeronga Park Pool in week 3 (week beginning 19 October). Lessons will continue until the end of week 7 ( week ending 20 November). Please note that there will only be four weeks as lessons are unable to be held in week 5 ( from 2 to 6 November).

Please send your child with all of the appropriate equipment. These items are noted on the swimming information which will be released this week.

Congratulations Jayden

Jayden R was busy last term with his sport; basketball. He was selected in the Met West Boys Basketball team for the state championships. This, on its own is a big achievement, but Jayden has had to do this with the added difficulty of growing pains. Congratulations and the best of luck for the state champs Jayden.

Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)

As part of the “road map” out of COVID representative sport dates have now been released. Please do look below if your child is interested in any of the sports listed.

Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)

The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions.  Selectors  will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.

In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

Rebel Sport Community Givebacks

Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased cricket equipment, Footballs and Netballs with this credit. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself.

Christmas Hampers

This year I am putting together hampers to give to some of our school families that need a little bit of help over the festive season, rallying the community spirit of generous Yeronga families.  I will have a box in the office foyer where your donations can be dropped.  You might like to purchase a couple of items and drop it off once, or buy something each week from now until Friday November 27.

Donations need to be non-perishable and suggested items are:

  • tasty and special food items - e.g. puddings, mince pies, chips, lollies, chocolate, shortbread, UHT custard, non-alcoholic drinks, nuts, etc.
  • decorative items – e.g. serviettes, bon-bons, Christmas decorations, etc
  • gifts – e.g. stationery, small toys, balls, books, games, etc.

Please let me know if you are interested in helping with this project.

Camp at Home - 24 October

Covid-19 restrictions means that the well-loved event “Camp at School” this year has become “Camp at Home”.  It will be all the usual fun of camp, but in your own loungeroom, or backyard, or even with a small group of friends.  The famous Chappy Games are still happening, and prizes are available for the winning family.

To be a part of the action, please purchase a Camp at Home Showbag from Flexischools for $20.  It’s a showbag full of fun activities, novelties, camp style food and treats. It is available for the first 100 families, with the showbags being delivered to classrooms on Thursday 22 October (only 2 weeks away!).

I hope you can join with me in having a great camp and still supporting the financial needs of the Chaplaincy program.  Thanks for your help.

Coming Up

24-25/10 – Camp at Home

30/10 – World Teacher’s Day

17/11 – Sub and Drink Lunch Deal
