Dear Families,
Over the last week of Term 1 we came together as a community to celebrate Harmony Day, Junior and Senior Cross Country and Junior Strings Concert. We thank the community for such great support to see these events go ahead. Whilst the torrential rain put a dampener on the plans for Harmony Day, it didn’t do anything to dampen spirits. It was wonderful to see so many families enjoying community together. Please look out for the photo spread in this newsletter.
Next week is a very important week on our school calendar with the school ANZAC Day ceremony on Wednesday 24th and ANZAC Day March and Ceremony on Thursday 25th. Please see the details for both ceremonies within the Deputy Principal newsletter piece. I very much look forward to accompanying a large representation of students in uniform in the march to the Cenotaph on Thursday morning.
Quadrennial School Review – 14, 15 and 16 May
The review model is appreciative inquiry, celebrating with the community what we are doing well and identifying the next steps in our school improvement journey. The review team will aim to touch base with as many parents as possible (usually at pick up and drop off times). A core component is identifying the unique strengths of the school and its vision and how the vision is being enacted throughout the school. In a nutshell;
Our school vision We are connected, curious and community minded learners and learners and citizens who make a positive difference to our world! in action over the past few years has been to develop;
- Connected Individuals: Leveraging Digital
- Curious Learners: Pedagogies for Deep Learning
- Community Minded Citizens-Environments for Global Competencies
In order to remind our community of how our school vision is enacted every day, staff will actively promote via daily Facebook posts over the next few weeks. Be sure to follow our official school account.

Lockdown Practice
Next Tuesday the school will conduct a whole school lockdown drill. The drill will take place during class time that morning. All classrooms are equipped with instructions for lockdown and evacuation procedures and drills each term ensure students and staff are familiar with our emergency response plans.
Have a wonderful week!

ANZAC Day Ceremony
Every year, YSS holds a special ANZAC Day ceremony. This year, like many years before, will include class wreath laying, and instrumental music by the Band and Strings Ensemble. The special significance of Honour Ave plays a part in our ceremony. Since 1924 the students at the school have brought along small individual bouquets which they take out to Honour Ave and place around the trees which were planted by the community after WW1 to remember the 97 men and women who came from the area and who lost their lives during the war.
All school community members are invited to join us for the ANZAC Day ceremony on Wednesday 24th April at 9am on the main oval. We encourage all students to bring a small posie of flowers in sustainable wrapping to lay around the trees on Honour Avenue during the ceremony.
The traditional ANZAC Day March on the 25th April will assembly on Park Rd from 6:45am.
Formal School Uniform is required for both ceremonies.
Problem Solving Wheel
Students across the school have been working on their problem solving skills in the playground. This problem solving wheel has been helpful for students to generate strategies to use on the spot when things aren’t going to planned. It’s becoming a valuable learning tool at YSS, and you might like to use it at home too.
Prep Information Evening
Our first Prep Information Evening for 2025 enrolments will be held next Tuesday 23rd April in the T-Block Curiosity Centre at 6pm. We will be showcasing a day in the life of a Prep student at Yeronga State School, as well as our signature teaching and learning programs. All interested families are welcome to attend.
Learning at YSS
The Curriculum at Yeronga State School is full of big ideas! We create learning opportunities for students to connect with the world around them, by engaging in authentic contexts, within the Australian Curriculum.
We use the learning assets to drive student’s access to the curriculum.
This term, we are focusing on the concept of cause and effect. Contexts for learning in the early years include exploring physical science and the effects of movement in outdoor learning and play environments. Year 2 students are exploring their connection to places locally and nationally and the effects different landscapes and human made resources have on that place. Year 3 students will explore cause and effect through biological science when they study animals, their environments and various elements impacting on these. Year 4 students will look at interactions, causes and effects as they explore how the water cycles through the environment.
Year 5 students will be focussing on how they can interact with and have impact on the 17 Global Goals.

We would like to thank our school community for all their support during Term 1 - whether it was buying a snag at the Local Election Democracy Sizzle, or buying sno cones for Cross Country or purchasing tickets in the Easter Raffle. Every bit helps and this support means that we can raise funds that go straight back to supporting our school community.
The much loved Trivia night also took place last term and the P&C would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of parent legends Rachel and Simon who have hosted the event for the past 9 years. Sadly, this was Rachel and Simons last year as hosts so a very sincere thank you for all the years of fun and memories. You will be sorely missed.
The P&C NEED YOU!
We are seeking a Secretary to join our very friendly team. We are looking into new flexible ways in which this role can be undertaken so if you would like to learn more, please contact Alex at president@yerongasspandc.org.au.
Do you have experience with Grant Applications - we'd love to speak to you. Please get in contact with Alex at president@yerongasspandc.org.au.
Tracey in the tuckshop is keen to hear from you if you have a couple of hours to spare each term to help in the tuckshop. You dont even have to be handy in the kitchen. If you can wash up or make a cup of tea, Tracey would love to chat to you. Please email Tracey at tuckshop@yerongasspandc.org.au or pop in to the tuckshop if youre at the school.
We are so pleased to welcome Amy Matthews-Frederickson as the new P&C Treasurer and a wonderful addition to our brand new executive team .
Upcoming Events:
Anzac Day School Ceremony
The P&C will have a small Posy/Rosemary stall prior to the School Anzac Ceremony next Wednesday 24th April. For a coin donation, you can come along and get a small sprig of rosemary or small posy from 815am. We will be located at the green space behind the library.
Mothers Day Stall
It’s nearly here! The day we get to show our care and appreciation to the figure who nurtures and guides our kiddies. Your generosity always makes this day memorable for our kids and the extended school family!
The annual P&C Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Thursday 9th May and will offer the students a chance to purchase a special gift for the female carer figure in their life.
Donations of small gifts ($5 or under) can be handed in to your classroom teacher. We love all the donated gifts: the unique, weird and wacky always add to the fun! Alternatively monetary donations can be made on FLEXISCHOOLS - Just click on the MOTHERS DAY TAB on the Flexischools home page
We will be sending out a request for help with wrapping and at the stall on the day, so watch the socials, parent rep and next newsletter for more details.
This is a really great opportunity for the dads, granddads and male carers to step up and show their partners in care that they totally can go shopping and wrap presents. Not even working the stall is beyond their awesome skills!
We could not do this without YOU!

Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection (Years 4 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for students aged 10 to 12 years. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools (Eastern Taipans District).
In most sports we are encouraged to send only 2 students from the school that demonstrate a very high level of ability. The majority of these teams are under 12 teams. A good guide for this is:
- A representative club player
- A top performer in your sport outside of school
- Playing in higher age groups
- Consistently demonstrating outstanding performances in interschool sport fixtures and training sessions in the highest division.
In order to be considered to attend a District Trial students should make themselves known to either (Mr Bateman or Mr Curness) at least 2 weeks prior to the trials.
