Dear YSS community
Our school values are critical as they help shape how we communicate, work together and make decisions. They help shape our behaviours. I want to take this opportunity to highlight that in my short time at this incredible school, I hear and see the YSS values in action by all school community members – students, staff, parents/carers and our school volunteers. With our school values and richness in diversity, I can see how students are ‘connected individuals, curious learners and community minded citizens’. You may wish to take the opportunity to talk with your children about our school values and why they are important.
Our agreed upon school values at YSS are:
- Learning – literate, numerate and curious
- Caring – for ourselves, each other and our community
- Growing and Achieving – growth mindset is key
School Opinion Survey
A friendly reminder to complete the parent/carer school opinion survey. We’ve received 81 anonymous responses which is fantastic and we’d love to see this number grow in the coming weeks into the hundreds. This is an opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve. The invitation has been sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2023. Please check your junk email folders if you can’t find it.
School parking
We’ve been advised by BCC that they will perform parking inspections over the coming weeks so please continue to park safely and legally. There have been some reports of parked cars in driveways blocking the pedestrian path. Please refer to this link for further information from BCC.
NAPLAN
Parents/carers of Years 3 and 5 would have received by now, their child’s individual student NAPLAN reports, showing your child’s achievement in each test domain, according to 4 levels of NAPLAN proficiency: Exceeding, Strong Developing and Needs additional support. Please remember that NAPLAN tests are only one aspect of an assessment and your child’s teacher will have the best insight into student progress. A factsheet included with your child’s report details the new changes from previous years. Find out more at Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).
Take care, Perry Trattos
Student Leaders
The senior leaders are busing mentoring younger students during play times. The house captains run structured activities across the school every Monday to build skills and promote fun play experiences for all students. Popular activities include; pop tag, hopscotch, skipping and rob the nest.
The SEQ Senior team have volunteered to mentor year 2 and 3 students on the Jr soccer oval. Team members rotate throughout the week to promote fair play, build team skills and a promote a fun game of lunch time soccer.
Awesome work leaders!
How well do you cope when life throws you a curveball? Good routines, practices and habits will help you to be stronger and more resilient, however there will still be some unexpected difficulties that arise from time to time that could include unemployment, relationship breakdown, health battles, financial troubles, parenting issues, managing ageing parents, etcetera. For me, I’ve recently had to manage a health challenge that has temporarily knocked me out, and my family has had to find ways to cope for the short term.
My recovery is going well because of great medical intervention but also because of some awesome people in my life that have stepped up and helped with offers of support, meals, and visits. I know how fortunate that I am to have such a great circle of friendship and support, although this has happened through intentionally building relationships with family and friends. I have been a good friend and stepped up to help when my friends have needed support and connection.
Beyond Blue suggest that, “Connections matter. Strong ties with family, friends and the community provide us with happiness, security, support and a sense of purpose. Being connected to others is important for our mental and physical wellbeing”. Building connections and friendships are an important part of life combating loneliness, poor health and social isolation. It is a healthy way to do life, not just for the fun of it, but also to provide a support network when life throws a curveball your way. And btw, I will be much better soon.
Blessings, Chappy Jenny

Tuck shop volunteers
There’s nothing worse than hungry kids! We are really desperate for help to fill those empty tums. Regular volunteers are amazing but we know that for some people you get a free morning once in a blue moon so we love our one off volunteers as well. If everyone helped just one morning a year we could keep the hungry kids at bay and our tuck shop convener would be one very happy lady. So pick a date, email tuckshop@yerongasspandc.org.au and have some fun with fellow parents over a sarnie or 10!
Running Club
Running club has resumed and will continue until the end of the year unless the weather makes it impossible to run safely or public health restrictions return. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays, from 3:15 to 3:45 and Wednesdays from 7:45 to 8:15 with Mr Bateman. Mr Sutherland is now holding his sessions on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:15. Remember that all of these sessions will occur on the main, or years 3-6, oval.
District Athletics Results
Congratulations to all of our District Athletics competitors. Yeronga students again performed to a very high standard. The results for those who finished in top 5 position are listed below. Usually the top 3 competitors will qualify for regionals unless there are students absent from events due illness or injury or a higher representation clash or a qualifying standard has not been met. Those who have qualified to compete at Regionals for the District Team will have their names and events qualified for underlined.

Commiserations to our other fantastic athlete who did themselves and their school proud, but missed out on a top 5 placing; Toby C, Cooper W, Jackson C, Jared C, Hunter N, Shawn D, Tristan H, Dash W, Freddie B, Esha P, Charlotte R, Theia B, Isabel T, Harper H, Maddie G, Bethany H, Mila C, Patrice M & Charlie K.
Finally a massive thank you to our parent who provided transport for District Athletics. Your time was much appreciated by teachers and students.
Football Goals
Please remember, that although these goals are metal, they are not built to be climbed upon. Please do not climb on them as you will be endangering yourself, damaging the goals and be the unhappy recipient of a white slip.
Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)
The trial dates for term one of 2023 are listed below.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy (Years 4 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
Rebel Sport Community Givebacks
Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased cricket equipment, Footballs and Netballs with this credit. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself. Thanks to all of those who purchased at Rebel over the break. We have a very useful amount for equipment.
Important Sporting Dates Term 3, 2023
17 & 18 July – District Athletics
29 & 30 August – Regional Athletics
11 September – YSS Ball Games Day
