Dear Parents and Caregivers,
You will notice the building zone for the new security fence has now been erected around the school site. The next work will be the removal of the fence people for safe keeping. The Park Rd. perimeter will be the first section to be completed and will incorporate an electronic gating system to most of these gates. Please look out for future communications regarding changed procedures that may impact families and visitors to the school site.
The new electronic sign sponsored by the school PandC has been partially installed. We expect the electrics to be up and running before the end of next week. We are excited to finally be getting those important reminders up on the sign to assist with overall school communications.
Thanks to the PandC new microphones have been purchased for the school external Portable PA system. We sincerely thank parent Hugh Webb for his guidance in selecting the correct device and installation of the system.
We look forward to a great week ahead!

Under 8’s Day
Prep – Year 2 parents are encouraged to join their children to celebrate being under 8. The theme for this year is ‘PLAY - You, me and our communities’. The children will start the day off in their classrooms and then at head out to the lower school areas to participate in engaging learning activities. Due to the amount of activities that we are providing we have decided to extend the session until 11am!!
It is such a lovely way to stay connected with the community, so the more parents that attend the better.
Please look in your inbox for the Under 8 invoice that will come soon with the fee of $5 – this payment assists in the resources we use on the day. Thank you to the parents who have paid the voluntary payment for this event – it all helps to make the morning one the children will truly remember!!
2V Showcase of Learning
During Week 2 Junior Assembly, the creative children in 2V presented the work that they had been learning about in Narrative writing. The children were learning about characters and were given Lego figurines as their inspiration to write about characteristics – the actions the character used, the ‘inside’ character traits, the way the character thought and the ‘outside’ physical appearance of their character. On assembly, the children were able to talk about main characteristics of their lego figurine. Well done to Mrs Von Kistowski and 2V – you are right ‘Everything is awesome and so are you!!”
Junior Assembly
We love to have parents attend our assembly – not only do you get to hear the important messages regarding learning but you also get to see our children performing!!

Spotlight on Health Lessons!
My name is Mr Curness. I am the Health Teacher at Yeronga State School. Each class receives a 30-minute weekly Health Lesson. This is the second year the school has offered specialist weekly Health lessons. Term 1 was mainly classroom/theory-based lessons. This term classes are involved in a range of movement lessons.
The Junior School have begun participating in a motor program that is held in the hall weekly. The students have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities that focus on concepts and skills such as balance, hand eye co-ordination, crossing the mid line, core body strength and gross motor skills.
The Senior School have jumped straight into athletics. In Health we will be focusing on Discus and Shot Put over the first few weeks. The students will have the opportunity to work with modified equipment initially and understand base techniques involved in the two throwing events.
Both theory and movement lessons have a large focus on teamwork, respect, fair play, safety and fun.
Everything is in place, and we are getting super excited about this. Only two weeks to go until YSS has it's amazing fun fair!

Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)
The trial dates for term one of 2023 are listed below.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy (Years 4 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
Rebel Sport Community Givebacks
Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased cricket equipment, Footballs and Netballs with this credit. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself. Thanks to all of those who purchased at Rebel over the break. We have a very useful amount for equipment.

Girls Basketball
The Year 5 girls are a passionate group of players who have thoroughly enjoyed our Friday afternoon training sessions. All the girls displayed excellent skills and sportsmanship throughout the day. We won our first four games quite convincingly against Algester, Calamvale, Warrigal Road and Roberston.
These games saw some excellent shooting from Lulia and Caitlyn. Helena was very strong on defence and Jemima and Elanor dribbled the ball successfully down the full length of the court on many occasions. Hope showed consistent high energy in both attack and defence and was always well supported by Violet, who was always in the right place at the right time. Anne showed her passion for the game and worked hard to move around the court to create great space. Holly demonstrated her knowledge of team sport through a developed sense of game play. Rocio's love of the game was contagious, and she was always open and ready to shoot when needed. Gabrielle showed us how much she has improved over the weeks by displaying excellent ball skills and agility on court. Theia was particularly good in defence, blocking her opponents and intercepting the ball.
Unfortunately, our last three games saw us lose by a narrow margin, but we have taken away a number of things to work on before the next round.

Senior Boys Soccer A
Last Friday the Junior and Senior A boys soccer teams went to Calamvale Community College for gala day. The boys played with great spirit, teamwork and sportsmanship. They ended the day undefeated without conceding a goal. Well done boys. Looking forward to the next gala day!
