Dear Friends,
We have reached that time of year where we are considering our progress as a school and the individual progress our students have made over the course of the academic year. When arriving at Yeronga State School at the beginning of 2021 as Principal I was fortunate to inherit a great state school serving a great community of families. Intentionally over my first two years, I have considered what is next for our school and what is the purpose of a great primary school education. What do our young learners need and what opportunities do we want them to experience as part of their formative education. How do we meet the needs of our diverse learners? How do we engage every child so that they leave each year to the summer break with a positive self-regard as a learner? It is important that children first and foremost are progressing satisfactorily with their literacy, numeracy, thinking and social and emotional learning skills. Opportunity to learn and demonstrate what they know and can do against the Australian Curriculum learning areas of English, Mathematics, Science History, Geography, Technology, Health and Physical Education, Languages and the Arts and associated year level standards is also our core business.
When I talk to our students, it is recalling the events and the opportunities where they are fully immersed in a whole of body and mind ‘hands on’ learning experience they are most animated and able to articulate the learning process in a real and tangible way. This is why at Yeronga State School we are introducing more ‘learning labs’ such as the ‘Frog Pond’ area our Year 1 students, teachers and parents have been rejuvenating, the curiosity centre, visual art space, and performing arts space. This, alongside expert teachers to support all students including students with exceptional learning needs is what you will see over the next year and beyond. Another example is our YEP (Yeronga Excellence Program) ensuring our most highly able students are receiving the targeted instruction for their ‘next steps’ in learning. We are consistently, seeing our Yeronga State School students returning from regional and state-wide competitions be it in sport, music, and most recently mathematics with wins that are both thrilling and humbling. Congratulations to Ms Wise and her charges, Nathan, Mathew, Andrey and Oliver for taking out Gold in the Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers Maths state-wide competition this week!
Coming up this term is our showcase of visual arts across the school. As founding chair of the Gallery of Children’s Art, I can’t tell you how excited I am to bring our first whole school Art Soiree to Yeronga. Our Art teacher, Jess Greenfield and supporting staff and students have worked tirelessly over the year to develop every child’s artistic practice. Please mark Saturday the 26th of November in your diaries. It is sure to be a wonderful event.
In recent school newsletters you will have seen reference to our schoolwide focus on positive student behaviours. As a whole school we have focussed on reinforcing expected Yeronga State School behaviours and consistent practices for responding to unacceptable behaviour. This is being positively and actively reinforced for all year levels across the school. It is important to us that all parents are aware for Prep and Year 1 students, developmentally appropriate practices for our youngest students are applied. We know that the majority of children are able to self-regulate when expectations are clear and consistently reinforced. We know that for some children, modified strategies are required and behaviour support may look different. Our aim is for all children to feel safe, secure and happy at school and especially in the early years, learning prosocial behaviours in order to get along with others. We recognise these expectations need to be taught and positively reinforced until routines are internalised and children are able to self -regulate. We value your partnership and cooperation to ensure Yeronga State School is a positive school learning environment for all students.
Have a wonderful week,
Eunice
eSafety Kids – people are being mean to others online
At times, we hear from our students that they see some teasing online using group chats or social media. Below, you’ll find some handy hints on what to look out for, and how to respond. You can also find out more on the e-safety website: https://www.esafety.gov.au/kids/I-want-help-with/people-are-being-mean-to-others-online
What to look out for
- mean messages, comments or images
- kids who are being left out online
- seeing lies about someone online
- other kids creating fake online profiles
- friends who delete their app or game accounts
- friends who are checking their phones more often than they used to
What to do
- Make sure cyberbullying stops with you— don’t forward or share any mean messages, posts or images.
- Reach out to the person being bullied— let them know you care about them.
- Try not to send mean messages back— this could make things worse.
- Speak to an adult you can trust- they can give you help and support.
Student Leadership nomination processes 2023
A big congratulations to all the year 5 students who have nominated for 2023 student leadership positions. 50 students were brave, and put themselves forward for a variety of positions. We are almost at the end of this process with the successful candidates being announced to the year 5’s on Friday. We are encouraged by how our future leaders have responded to this process, sharing the wins and losses with each other, and encouraging each other along the way. We know that we have some fantastic students who are ready to step up and lead our great school in 2023.
Next weeks year 5 camp will be the first step along the leadership journey, where students will participate in a variety of challenges, designed to explore team work and leadership skills. We’re excited for things to come!

Thank you
Thank you for the donations towards the Gift Hamper Campaign, with enough goodies collected so far for 3 hampers. I’m hoping to hand out 15 hampers or more in the last weeks of the school term to Yeronga families who need a bit of cheer and encouragement. So please purchase a few extra items when you go grocery shopping and bring them in to the baskets in the admin foyer. Donations should be non-perishable special foods items (not your usual pantry items), gifts (books, small toys, games, etc) and decorative items (decorations, serviettes, bon-bons, etc.).
Self-Esteem
This term I held my annual handball competition where many students joined in with much enthusiasm. While there’s nothing special about handball, it is fun, active, and great for developing hand-eye coordination. This simple game also provided a great opportunity for those children who are a bit lost at lunchtimes needing something to do, and for those who have never played, providing a safe environment to learn, practice, and develop confidence to join in with others. The competition was also great for the children who love the game and could show their skills, better their game, and be competitive. And importantly, children found new friends who have something in common.
Similar benefits exist in other after-school activities, holiday programs, and community-based groups. When we provide opportunity for our children outside of the usual classroom group, it helps them to meet new friends, to develop new skills, confidence, and put their social skills to practice. Where there might be difficulties with other students in the school environment, they might be at ease with others doing a like-minded activity. Where there is lack of confidence because of academic difficulties, developing skills in other areas of life is essential for building self-esteem and self-confidence. Handball winners will be announced soon.

Running Club
Running club has resumed in Term 4 and will continue until the end of term unless the weather makes it impossible to run safely or public health restrictions return. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays, from 3:15 to 3:45, with Mr Landeck and Thursdays from 7:45 to 8:15 with Mr Bateman. Mr Sutherland will hold his sessions on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:15. Remember that all of these sessions will occur on the main, or years 3-6, oval.
Senior (Years 3-6) Swimming Carnival Changes
This year we will be running time trials to determine those eligible for 50m events. Due to the increase in student numbers across the school we will now only have the students who swam the fastest 16 times for an event swimming 50m for that stroke eg 10 Years Boys Freestyle. Those not in the fastest 16 will now swim in the 25m events to contribute to the success of their house. It is a decision that makes the best use of the time we have at the pool for carnivals for all students and satisfies the often competing aims of preparing students for the 2023 District Swimming Trial and allowing as many students as possible to participate at the carnival.

Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)
The trial dates for term one of 2022 are listed below.
District Sport and COVID
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
