Dear Friends and Families,
Welcome back to our final term of the school year. It’s a little hard to fathom that we are here and considering what learning and progress the students have made over the course of the year. Our students continue to make exceptional progress with our 2022 NAPLAN results and A-E Academic reporting results some of the highest in the Metropolitan Region. I am proud of our team and our balanced approach to teaching and learning. We continue to prioritise the targeted use of school resources deliberately and strategically to ensure every student is making the necessary literacy and numeracy progress, whilst ensuring they are developing the skills and dispositions to navigate an increasingly complex world. At Yeronga SS we do this through our Learner Assets and direct instruction of social and emotional learning. We know that our students thrive when they feel secure and safe first. Part of this is knowing what is expected and that routines are predictable and consistently managed. This secure base is a good place from which to respond to change and uncertainty if and when it arises. As mentioned in my Term 3 Week 9 Newsletter message, we are refocussing on routines and respectful behaviours and relationships across the school.
Over Term 4 we will be reinforcing this by;
- Communication to students, staff and parents regarding our process for responding to minor and major problem behaviours
- Direct teaching of respectful behaviour utilising the Department of Education Respectful Relationships Education resource.
Please look out for updates on what will be covered in these lessons via regular inserts in the school newsletter.
One change in how we implement our response to minor problem behaviours you may notice is that if your child attends a ‘reflection conversation’ an email will be sent to the parent/caregiver from the classroom teacher alerting them to their attendance. The Reflection conversation is conducted during the lunchbreak and is a facilitated conversation with a dedicated staff member. The purpose is to assist the student to reflect on their behaviour choice and consider alternatives to manage any future situations more effectively. If a pattern of ongoing minor problem behaviour is occurring, the Deputy Principals will manage this in partnership with the parent/caregiver and if necessary our inclusion staff. It is important that understand for some children the ability to self-manage and self-regulate emotion and behaviour is difficult and requires a variety of adult supports and adjustments. For these students, an individual behaviour or risk management plan is put in place in collaboration with parents and school and regional support staff.
We are entering that time of year where we prepare for the transition of students to their next phase of learning. As we prepare for the farewell of our Year 6 students, the incoming Prep students and the transition to the next year level for our remaining students, we invite you to communicate any considerations for your child in regards to class placement for 2023 to Tracy Freeman, Deputy Principal. If your child is not going to be with us next year, please ensure this is also communicated so we can plan accordingly.
Have a great start to term 4.
Eunice Webb
Principal
Welcome back to an extremely busy and rewarding term. Teachers are continuing their strong focus on teaching and learning, as well as our swimming lessons which are up and running for the whole school. As a school we are also planning for the many exciting events at the end of the year – swimming carnivals, awards ceremonies and Christmas concerts – the list is endless….
The weather is starting to warm up and it is important to remind our children to be ready for the warmer months by ensuring that students always have their school hat and full water bottle every day.
Student leadership 2023
Beginning next week, students in year 5 will embark on the nomination process for formal student leadership positions at Yeronga State School for 2023. Student leadership is very important to us here at Yeronga, and we continue to refine the processes to ensure authentic and meaningful processes for students. Please find below a link to the student leadership handbook. Students will meet with Miss Kirk next week to hear about the positions and nomination process. We encourage all students to be brave, and nominate for positions if they are interested in leading our great school in 2023.

ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVEL DAY
Just a reminder that every Wednesday is Active School Travel Day. Many of our students have been ‘out and about’ travelling actively to school, particularly on a Wednesday. Just a reminder that children need to get their books stamped at the stamping stations by 8:45am, as our lovely senior students need to pack up the station and get back to class. Thank you also to the parent/s that I saw helping at the Junior school stamping station this week.
NATURE PLAY YEAR 1 and PREP
The Nature Play in lower school has been reinstated after the building process of T block has come to an end. There has been lots of excited and busy little people in this space during play times – it is a great space for imagination, collaboration and communication!! Just a gentle reminder, that this area is out of bounds in the morning before school as there are no teachers on duty in this space. If you could remind your children of this that would be greatly appreciated.
PREP 2023 FESTIVITIES
A huge thank you to our current Prep teachers!! They have been assisting in the prep interviews with our new prep children – this is where we welcome and get to know new and returning families to our Yeronga learning community. Over the next two weeks, we will embark on seeing the Prep 2023 children in their early education setting – this aims to provide a successful transition to ‘big school’.
2023 PLANNING
- It would be much appreciated if parents could let Mrs Freeman know if their child will not be returning to YSS in 2023. Please send through this information to tfree19@eq.edu.au
- Also the cut off for the 2023 Class Allocation process is next Friday 14 October.
So much planning to be completed in the next 8 weeks – exciting times ahead.
Have a great two weeks

Tuckshop Carpark
As of Friday 7th October, there will be limited parking in the Tuckshop carpark. The building contractor who will be working on the refurbishment of F Block will be erecting bunting around the line of carparks closest to the Tuckshop. Just a reminder that this carpark is for staff only. Parents needing to drop off or pick up their student/s from YOSH are encouraged to use on street parking.
Kind regards,

World Mental Health Day
Crazy Sock fundraiser Monday 10th October
Monday the 10th October marks World Mental Health Day. The Yeronga State School wellbeing legacy committee is raising awareness of mental health issues around the world with a crazy sock fundraiser and wellbeing activities throughout the day.
Students can wear crazy socks to show their support and bring a gold coin donation for the wellbeing legacy committee to raise awareness of World Mental Health Day.
Save the Date! Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander BBQ At YSHS
Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Students, Families and Extended Community
Wednesday 16th November from 3:00pm
This term we will be implementing Respectful Relationships Program, an initiative of the Queensland Government. This program will give students opportunities for social and emotional learning in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationships, ethics, values, social norms, stereotypes, human rights, risk and responsible decision making. A growing body of evidence shows that social and emotional learning of this nature leads to:
- improved social and emotional skills, self-concept, bonding to school and classroom behaviour
- less disruptive classroom and playground behaviour
- reduced emotional distress
Welcome back to term 4!
I hope you had a great spring break. I had a wonderful camping trip over the long weekend to cold Crow’s Nest, spending time in nature, and with family and friends. The getaway was fun, but it also served to build connection with others and was a great way to have a sense of belonging and develop a circle of support. The bush walks in the national park were great for reducing stress and strengthening health and mental wellbeing. If you weren’t able to get away these holidays or have time outdoors, find a way to incorporate a nature getaway in a coming weekend or over the summer holidays. It is so beneficial!
Camp at School
Unfortunately, the decision has been made to cancel Camp at School yet again. Given the impending weather forecast it may have had to be cancelled closer to the date anyway. Consideration was also made concerning the state of the oval, with vehicles and camper trailers potentially causing damage. I was so looking forward to this wonderful event after being cancelled due to Covid the last two years, and know that many families will also be disappointed.
Parent Café
Parent Café continues to be a meeting point and opportunity to chat and request support or information from the team. Please take the advantage of this time every Tuesday morning from 8:30am.

Running Club
Running club has resumed in Term 4 and will continue until the end of term unless the weather makes it impossible to run safely or public health restrictions return. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays, from 3:15 to 3:45, with Mr Landeck and Thursdays from 7:45 to 8:15 with Mr Bateman. Mr Sutherland will hold his sessions on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:15. Remember that all of these sessions will occur on the main, or years 3-6, oval.
Senior (Years 3-6) Swimming Carnival Changes
This year we will be running time trials to determine those eligible for 50m events. Due to the increase in student numbers across the school we will now only have the students who swam the fastest 16 times for an event swimming 50m for that stroke eg 10 Years Boys Freestyle. Those not in the fastest 16 will now swim in the 25m events to contribute to the success of their house. It is a decision that makes the best use of the time we have at the pool for carnivals for all students and satisfies the often competing aims of preparing students for the 2023 District Swimming Trial and allowing as many students as possible to participate at the carnival.
Ball Games Day 14 September 2022 Results Summary
Another ball games day has come and passed and a great time had by all. As the only inter-class event on the calendar it continues to bring out the best in everyone as collaborators, thinkers, self-managers and communicators. It also allows an outlet for sporting and artistic prowess. The winners of the competitions were as follows;
Year One First Place: 1LP Lightning People
Year Two First Place: 2L Legends
Year Three First Place: 3W Weekenders
Year Four First Place: 4L Lions
Year Five First Place: 5B Ballerinas
Year Six First Place: 6K Kate’s Kindy Kids
The best dressed teams were the 2V Vikings, for years one and two, the 4H Henry’s Horrors, for years three and four, and for years 5 & 6; Masselos’ Minions and best message the 6Q Queers.
Thanks to all for a wonderful day full of colour and competition!
New Football Goals
A big thank you to Mrs Webb for the purchase of our new portable football goals. Please remember, though, that although these goals are metal they are not built to be climbed upon. Please do not climb on them as you will be endangering yourself, damaging the goals and be the unhappy recipient of a white slip.
Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)
The trial dates for term one of 2022 are listed below.
District Sport and COVID
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
