Dear Parents and Carers
This is the last newsletter for the year so I will take this opportunity to wish all of you a restful holiday and a happy Christmas. To those families leaving Yeronga – all our Year 6 families and a few other families, best wishes for the future and I hope that you take with you happy memories of your stay at this school. I would also like to farewell one of our Year 6 teachers, Alex McShane as she takes up a teaching post in Cambodia. All the very best Alex and thank you for your work and dedication. We look forward to your return and your stories.
2020 threw many challenges our way. I choose to look at the glass half full and celebrate the amazing things that the students and community have achieved. Necessity helped us step onto a platform of educational delivery that most of us were not familiar with. Students and parents were also confronted with new ways of working. Innovation and creativity flourished and it was wonderful to see the students tackle the challenges. Thank you to everyone but especially the teachers who had a week in which to turn their way of teaching around.
We were lucky in Queensland and here at Yeronga, once students came back to school, we ensured that every opportunity was taken to continue on despite the pandemic. I am proud to say, that despite Term 2 being thin on the ground with events, we managed to fit most of them into Term 3 and 4. Students in Years 4-6 went on camp. Students went on their incursions and excursions. Sporting events continued even though they looked slightly different. More recently, we have had music concerts and performances. We are all familiar with QR codes and completing COVID declarations!
Can I congratulate the music staff, Lauren Easy, Tamsyn Eastgate, Robyn Rosewarne and Alec Grodecki on the three concerts organised for Week 7 and 8. The standard was exceptionally high. It was a celebration of fabulous music and students able to perform to a real audience.
We had 25 students enter an online language speaking contest, across 7 languages and are very proud of the students’ achievement. They achieved 4xElite Awards (the top award) in Spanish, French, Korean and Chinese, 8xGold Awards, 7xSilver Awards, 5xBronze Awards and 2xCredit Awards. One student entered 2 languages and attained an Elite and a Gold Award. This year we had the highest number of students take part. Thank you to Cathy Hegarty and Andrea Bueno for their passion and commitment to teaching a second language.
The Green Team, with the support of our volunteer, Nicole won the BCC WasteSMART Awards AGAIN!!
Congratulations to the P&C for winning the Band 9 P&C awards for 2020. The hard work and commitment to the school was acknowledged through this award.
Finally, well done to all Year 5 students who nominated for a leadership position and congratulations to those who were successful.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers at the school. The work of members of the P&C, the volunteers in the tuck shop and classrooms is highly valued. This year you might have felt a little ‘locked out’ but I hope that in the year to come, things will go back to usual. The partnerships between the school and families cannot be underestimated.
Last week, Tracy Freeman and I attended a two-day Primary Principal’s Association conference. The main theme was Re-Imagining Education. The common theme included: let children be children, creating an environment where curiosity is nurtured and all students are important, wonder and schools, curiosity, questions, concepts, listen to student voice, be brave, trust, problem solving, being vulnerable, authentic, ask before tell, think big, focus on pedagogy, teacher learner.
Having read this, I hope you see the alignment between the work YSS has embraced and continues to build on and what is now seen as teaching with a moral purpose.
I would like to end with once again wishing you all a good holiday. Thank you to the staff for a mighty effort this year. You are champions. Thank you to the students who stepped up and showed the resilience that was required and thank you to the community for standing by the students and school. We will gladly welcome 2021!
Community, Staff and Student Safety

We continue to remind some parents that they cannot enter the staff car parks for drop-off purposes or to park. Recently, parents entering the staff car park in a dangerous manner were aggressive to other parents who were following the rules. This kind of behaviour is not appropriate and not accepted at this school. Please do the right thing.
Student Code of Conduct
The 2020 Student Code of Conduct was ratified at the last P&C meeting. It has been uploaded to the school website. Please become familiar with this important document. Thank you to all who helped develop this piece of work. Next year, will see the implementation and embedding of a few new items. Most of the described behaviours in the matrices have been part of the Yeronga ethos for the last four years.
Quadrennial School Review
The completed, ratified and signed strategic plan for 2021-23 has been published and uploaded to the school website. Please read and enjoy. Thank you to all the parents, staff and students who contributed to the consultation and development of this plan.

Year 4 Camp
Fortunately Year 4 students finally got to take part in their school camp last week at Kindilan Camp in Redland Bay. The students enjoyed archery, a giant swing, orienteering, kayaking and much more.
Camp provided opportunities for students to build independence, resilience and the skills needed to be good communicators and collaborators.
Thank you to Kalomira Masselos, Ryan Henry, Katie McDermott, Gemma Chase, Chappy Jen, and Kerri McGuire for your efforts in organising and being away on camp.
School Discos
Our discos look a little different this year. However both the Junior and Senior School students enjoyed listening and dancing to music in the hall after assembly. The student council were able to raise $803.30 from the sale of glow products. This money will be used to cover the cost of next week’s free swim for all classes.
NAIDOC Free Dress Fundraising
The gold coin donations from NAIDCO Week free dress day raised $866.45. This money will be donated to the Seedmob, Australia's first Indigenous youth climate network: https://www.seedmob.org.au.
Year 6 Graduation and Disco
The Year 6 Graduation will take place in the Yeronga State High School Hall next Monday 7th December at 9am. We look forward to sharing this special occasion with the students and their parents. Thank you to the Year 6 parents and caregivers who have rsvp’d. If you have not yet done so, please find the link below.
Due to our COVIDSafe plan, an RSVP for each guest is mandatory for this event and must be completed prior to attendance (no ticket, no entry)
Year 6 Student Disco
When: Monday 7 December
Where: YSS Hall Time: 6pm - 8pm
The students will have a chance to get dressed up in their graduation outfits and dance the night away at a special student disco, complete with photo booth!
This will be a Year 6 student only event (due to COVID restrictions) and will be supervised by YSS School Staff working in conjunction with the Year 6 Graduation committee. A special thank you to our amazing P&C for their support for our graduation celebrations!
Thank you to Kate Middleton-Pol, Kate H, Jane M, Tracey B, Melanie Sand Lorien B who have been instrumental in the successful planning of these events.

Congratulations YSS: 2020 P&C of the Year Awards ‘Band 9’ winner!
CONGRATULATIONS to our fantastic YSS community - on 6 November our school was announced as the 'Band 9' winner of the 2020 P&C of the Year Awards! We were one of 6 schools to be presented an award, which came with $1,500 for our P&C. Our nomination demonstrated our community's collective efforts to air condition every classroom at YSS. This was a special project that started in 2015 and was completed in 2019 with the final classrooms air conditioned in time for the summer heat in term 4. The award recognises our community's outstanding planning, engagement, communication, generosity and collaboration to raise the funds needed to air condition our school.

New ‘gingerbread fence people’ on display now
After months of planning, preparation and working bees by a team of parent volunteers led by Sue and Jeremy Tape, our children's much anticipated new 'fence people' additions to the YSS fence line have all arrived and are on display for all to see. A big THANK YOU to the wonderful parent volunteers, teachers and children who have worked so hard to bring the 2020 'Gingerbread ence people' project to life.
The final working bee to add the 'fence people' to the fence was held on 21 November (a couple of extra trips to school were made the following weeks to put up the last 20). Some of the new 'fence people' are dotted among the original ones, but the majority of the new ones are on School Rd, between the Prep gate and Yeronga Pool, and there are some on the fence near the gate as you enter the school from the pool car park, near the senior Nature Play area. Enjoy!!! Can your child/ren find theirs?

Thank you Debbie Spanner: invitation to contribute
Having served as YSS Principal of Yeronga State School from 2012 to 2019, Debbie Spanner has made a significant and lasting contribution to our school.
In 2020 Debbie moved to her next role at Indooroopilly SS, but COVID-19 denied our community the opportunity to come together to honour and thank Debbie for her service to YSS. To let Debbie know how much we appreciate her leadership and the transformation she brought to YSS, appreciative parents have created an online 'GroupTogether' page to collect donations (any amount) from anyone who would like to contribute and add a note of thanks to the online card. Should you wish to contribute, please do so by Friday, 11 December.
Donations will go towards a 'Debbie Spanner Community Care Fund' at YSS to support students in need of financial assistance to fully participate in educational opportunities (eg incursions, excursions, camps, etc) when they may otherwise not be able to participate.
We look forward to presenting this special token of appreciation to Debbie on behalf of our school community (https://app.grouptogether.com/contributor?collection=3fb78590-8b55-4f36-bc8b-8d241efd711a#).

YSS P&C 2020-2023 Strategic Plan
After completing the school air conditioning project in 2019, the P&C embarked on a strategic planning process to determine its priorities from 2020 to 2023. We are proud to share the YSS P&C 2020-2023 Strategic Plan that was endorsed by members in August.
The Plan was developed in consultation with P&C members, the school leadership team, and the wider school community, and will guide future decision making by the YSS P&C. It articulates a set of values, principles and objectives that underpin decisions around management, operations and budget, and was developed using a co-design approach to ensure meaningful community engagement and robust input to guide the P&C's strategic direction. Stages involved in developing the plan included:
- A P&C community survey to establish key priorities for students, staff, P&C leadership and the wider community
- P&C monthly meetings
- A co-designed strategic workshop with key stakeholders - thank you to school parent and Articulous Communications Chief Operations Officer, Emma Andrews, for faciliting the strategic plan workshop and drafting the plan.
To read the Strategic Plan overview and download a copy head to: www.yerongasspandc.org.au/index.php/2020-2023-strategic-plan/ (just a little light Summer holiday reading for you!).

Thank you for your support through this crazy year
2020 sure has been a year like no other! We are grateful for our calm, caring and compassionate YSS community that adapted so swiftly to changes thrust upon everyone by COVID-19 at the end of term 1. We were lucky to be able to sneak in a couple of activities before the pandemic made everything really tricky, including snow cones for the Senior Cross Country, and our Easter raffle created happiness a couple of weeks earlier than expected.
We experienced 5 weeks of home schooling with our wonderful teachers supporting our children daily with new learning materials, and being on the front line supporting the children of essential workers at school. Our YOSHC and Tuckshop services remained open throughout - a massive THANK YOU to our P&C staff who kept these services open to support our community, while the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop offered 'click and collect' services. Families also benefited from the Australian government's 'free childcare' package that enabled YOSHC to continue to care for YSS children at no cost to families. YOSHC staff also volunteered in the Tuckshop when children returned to school but parent volunteers were not allowed on campus.
Terms 3 and 4 have been full of activity with 'covid' adaptations to ensure the health of our community. The generosity of our community shone through for the Father's Day stall with many making extra donations of gifts and money to ensure all children could choose a gift for their significant adult. The swimming carnival snow cones tradition has continued in week 9 thanks to a team of parents and carers volunteering their time. And of course we celebrate the addition of 150 new 'fence people' to our school's fence line in preparation for YSS' 150th anniversary celebrations in 2021.
Zoom video conferencing has become a regular feature of P&C meetings. In August members officially adopted the P&C's new 2020-2023 Strategic Plan which will guide the P&C's activities, operations and support provided for our children and school over the next three years. We also introduced new streamlined P&C meeting procedures to ensure our meetings are welcoming, enjoyable and efficient for those who attend.
THANK YOU to all in our community for your outstanding contributions that make YSS a truly special school for our children, teachers and families. We wish you a wonderful summer holiday and Christmas festive season and look forward to seeing you back at school in January 2021.

As the year draws to a close we reflect back on what has happened. We began the year with a bang with many students eager to read the books that had been returned the previous year. Eyeing the books they wanted and shooting straight into the library as school started.
During the COVID period, I personally got to speak to many parents and am delighted that they now know who I am and the relationships we built during an interesting time of year. The students were eager to get back to school and begin borrowing books again. Some managed to stock up before lock down.
We would like to thank the parents who have supported us this year by helping their children return their books regularly. We shelve over 2000 per week and to see students faces when they see a book but it is in quarantine. We changed our system to move the recently released books out and more accessible to our students. There were some books that I don’t think made it back onto the shelves until we closed borrowing for stocktake.
A big thank you needs to go to the volunteers who came in and helped us shelve and cover new books. Our Library Captain Sofia was amazing helping in the library and running some of the Tech Crew duties as well.
Our biggest thank you goes to the Library Monitors and Library Helpers. These are students who come to the library during both breaks, put on their lanyards and are ready to help the teacher librarians and students. The monitors have undergone their full training and know how to shelve books in the Junior Fiction, Quick Fiction, Senior Fiction and Non-fiction areas and know how to return and issue books. Our helpers are learning the ropes and are in training to become monitors. Our students know that if they need help or simply need someone to read to them or play a game they can go to someone wearing a lanyard. Our monitors and helpers rotate so that they get a balance of free time and library time. This is often their very first opportunity to achieve our school motto of Service before Self. Well done team we could not have done it without you!
To all our avid readers have a wonderful break and don’t forget that you can all access the public libraries.
ICAS report
We would like to congratulate Andrey, year 3, who won not one but two ICAS medals this year. He won gold medals for his results in Digital Technologies and Science. Students with the top score in each subject in each year level are awarded a medal and a medal winners certificate. Well done Andrey!
Happy Reading,
Mrs Cowie and Mrs Hage
Volunteers Certificates
Despite the challenges of Covid-19 this year, there has been some opportunities for parents and friends to contribute to the life of the school. As recognition of your volunteer contribution, and as a token of our appreciation, a certificate will be sent home over the next few days. Please let me know if you don’t receive your certificate.
Christmas Hampers
What a generous community we have, with an abundance of awesome food and toy donations towards the Christmas Hamper project helping 10 school families with end of year festivities. Thank you so much. The hampers look great.
Kindness is Kool Club
The collection of donated activity books and colouring books will be dropped off to the Queensland Children’s Hospital early next week. So if there is still any unused books at home that you would like to contribute, please drop them off to A Block foyer on Monday or Tuesday. Thank you for the great collection that has already come in.
Seasons Greetings
I hope that the coming holidays will be refreshing and uplifting after quite a difficult and challenging year. It’s times like this where we realise what is most important to us, and where we should invest our time and energy. I hope you enjoy some more special time with your family and loved ones.
Thank you for your ongoing support for the Chaplaincy Program and all the projects I have done this year, as I try to look after the needs of the school community. I have now completed 10 years here as your Chappy. I still have energy and new ideas of things to do for 2021 and beyond.
Please feel free to contact me over the holidays via email if you have any needs, as I would like to keep up with what is happening, particularly in supporting families and staff through difficult periods.
All the best for the holidays, and let’s hope that 2021 is a brighter and happier year.
Blessings,
Chappy Jenny

BCC WasteSMART Awards
The Yeronga SS Green Team are WINNERS again - for the second year in a row - in the primary school section of the Brisbane City Council WasteSMART Brisbane Awards!!!
This special award recognises the Green Team's leadership in supporting YSS to go above and beyond to reduce our school's environmental footprint.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said this year's awards, which replaced 2019’s Cleaner Suburbs awards, received a record 195 nominations.
“Brisbane is home to many devoted environmental leaders. The WasteSMART Brisbane Awards are a chance to recognise the incredible efforts of people of all ages to keep our city clean and green,” Cr Schrinner said. “All finalists have shown the utmost dedication to creating a more sustainable city, but they’ve also inspired other local residents to change their waste habits too."
This is absolutely a whole school effort! To our amazing school community who so willingly take on board all our initiatives, we thank you! This is for you all!! To everyone who has brought a nude lunch, recycled a container or recycled anything else in our myriad of recycling schemes, picked up litter, walked to school, composted food in the garden or any other little things you do every day to encourage our students to care for our planet, we see you and we thank you!!

Our New Australian Native Stingless Bee Hive
If you haven’t already been down to check it out, the school now has its first beautiful Australian Native Bee Hive, thanks to the very generous Kandel family from Prep. These bees do not sting, although they can give you a little bite if you disturb their hive. The hive is located in a tree between the hall and the library, a nice shady spot for the bees and a great spot for teachers and students to observe and appreciate the bees. While European honey bees are important, our Australian native bees are critically important to the pollination of our native plants and trees and are an essential part of our fragile ecosystems.
Please show your children the hive and explain how they are important and to take good care of them by only looking with their eyes and not touching.
For more information about Australian Native Bees, see https://sugarbag.net/faq.
Final recycling call
Please make sure you bring in all your recycling as soon as possible so that it can be collected by our program partners. We have Cash 4 Cans recycling in the big yellow and blue bins (there are 4 located around the school). In the library, we have battery, cords and phone recycling in the big purple wheely bin, e-waste in the big cardboard e-waste box, bread tags, felt pens and clean plastic bottle tops.

Many thanks!!
The Green Team
Thank You
Thanks to all for their understanding and contributions over a very unusual year. All the best for the Summer Holidays

Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)
The trial dates for term one of 2021 are listed below.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
Rebel Sport Community Givebacks
Just a quick note to publicise our involvement with this scheme and how it works. For some time now Yeronga State School has been part of the above mentioned scheme. The scheme gives the school credit for purchases of equipment at Rebel as anyone who purchases equipment nominates Yeronga State School as the recipient of Community Kickbacks. I have purchased cricket equipment, Footballs and Netballs with this credit. It is an easy way to contribute resources to our school especially if you enjoy spending time and money in sports stores like myself.
