Dear Families,
It has been a joy to see so many of our families’ making connections and getting to know each other over the past term.
This year is the launch of our new Strategic Plan of which ‘belonging’ is a foundational priority for engagement and achievement for all students. At Yeronga State School we know that our children come to us from the context of family and as the children’s first teachers, we are your partners. I trust you have found already, the school’s willingness to welcome you and to support you in this journey together.
Have a wonderful time over the mid-semester break with your children. Enjoy the slower pace and opportunity to make lasting memories as a family together.
I look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Tuesday 22 April.

Year 4/5/6 Swimming Carnival Wrap-up
We loved the year 4/5/6 swimming carnival this week. Students and staff joined forces for a lighthearted day at the pool, engaging in novelty races to earn points for their respective houses. Evans House triumphed, winning the trophy by a slim margin of 16 points over Lawson. Great work Evans!
Our special thanks to Moorooka State School, for lending us their pool for the day, and to Mr C, Mr Bateman and Miss Kirk for organising a fun and inclusive event!
Harmony Day Wrap-up
What a beautiful morning celebrating Harmony Day at YSS last week. Our community came together to recognise and celebrate our cultural diversity, with over 80 nations represented in our flag procession.
Thank you to all who joined us in the celebrations!
ANZAC Day
Every year, YSS holds a special ANZAC Day ceremony. This year, like many years before, will include class wreath laying, and the special significance of Honour Ave plays a part in our ceremony. Since 1924 the students at the school have brought along small individual bouquets which they take out to Honour Ave and place around the trees which were planted by the community after WW1 to remember the 97 men and women who came from the area and who lost their lives during the war.
All school community members are invited to join us for the ANZAC Day ceremony on Thursday 24th April at 9am on the main oval. We encourage all students to bring a small posie of flowers in sustainable wrapping to lay around the trees on Honour Avenue during the ceremony.
The traditional ANZAC Day March on the 25th April will assemble on Park Rd near the tennis courts from 6:45am. The Parade will commence at 7:00 am from outside the school and will travel along Park Road, through Honour Avenue and proceed to the Cenotaph. All community members are invited to join us.
Student Council Fundraiser
The Student Council is hosting a fundraiser next week. Join us for some crazy fun!

Student Engagement
This year, we will begin to explore Amy Berry's Engagement Continuum—a helpful way of thinking about how children engage in their learning. The continuum reminds us that engagement isn't just about being busy or well-behaved; it's about how deeply children are thinking, questioning, and making connections. At school, we are exploring this tool to notice when students are simply "compliant" versus when they are truly curious and invested in their learning. Families can use this idea at home too. You might notice when your child is going through the motions versus when they're excited, asking questions, or exploring something new. Encouraging them to talk about what sparks their interest can help move them along the continuum toward deeper, more meaningful engagement—whether it’s during work, play, or family conversations.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan is under way!
A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is a pathway that allows us to take meaningful steps toward advancing reconciliation both at our school and beyond.
We now have a dedicated group of teachers and parents working together to embed our reconciliation actions and secure formal endorsement of our plan. To kick things off, we held our first meeting, where we discussed ideas for building relationships, respect, and opportunities within the classroom, around the school, and in the community.
We are excited to invite you to join the RAP group! We will meet 1-2 times a term at 8am on a Friday. Please email Felicia Chapman fjcha0@eq.edu.au if you would like more information or keen to join.
Stay tuned for more updates and actions as the plan unfolds!

Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection (Years 4 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for students aged 10 to 12 years. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools (Eastern Taipans District).
In most sports we are encouraged to send only 2 students from the school that demonstrate a very high level of ability. The majority of these teams are under 12 teams. A good guide for this is:
- A representative club player
- A top performer in your sport outside of school
- Playing in higher age groups
- Consistently demonstrating outstanding performances in interschool sport fixtures and training sessions in the highest division.
In order to be considered to attend a District Trial students should make themselves known to either (Mr Bateman or Mr Curness) at least 2 weeks prior to the trials.

P&C Colour Fun Run - 9th of May
GET READY FOR THE BEST SCHOOL DAY EVER!
On Friday 9th May we will be holding a School COLOUR Fun Run. We will be raising much needed funds in the lead up to this event for P and C initiatives like funding the Arts and Music programs at the school! Our target is $30,000 so we’re asking all families to pitch in!
Your child will bring home more information this week; however, you can sign up at any time at: funrun.com.au
What is School Fun Run?
School Fun Run is an online fundraising program which allows us to facilitate our COLOUR Fun Run event, families sign up at home and create an online profile for each student. The family or student then choose target prizes and work towards hitting the target through fundraising! In the profile there will be a unique cyber safe link to share with family and friends which will allow them to donate and get those targets achieved!
The fundraising starts NOW! In the lead up to this amazing event, we are planning a COLOUR Fun Run obstacle course on the oval for ALL students to compete that promises fun, fitness, and community.
What do we need you to do?
All we need you to do this week is create an online profile at funrun.com.au. The class with the most signed up profiles by Thursday 3rd April will get an icy pole for each student!
This is an inclusive fundraiser, and we would love you to be a part of it! We will be looking for volunteers to help for the event to so look out for the signup link soon.
Thank you as always for supporting your kids and your school!
