Year 4/5/6 Swimming Carnival Wrap-up

We loved the year 4/5/6 swimming carnival this week. Students and staff joined forces for a lighthearted day at the pool, engaging in novelty races to earn points for their respective houses. Evans House triumphed, winning the trophy by a slim margin of 16 points over Lawson. Great work Evans!

Our special thanks to Moorooka State School, for lending us their pool for the day, and to Mr C, Mr Bateman and Miss Kirk for organising a fun and inclusive event!

Harmony Day Wrap-up

What a beautiful morning celebrating Harmony Day at YSS last week.  Our community came together to recognise and celebrate our cultural diversity, with over 80 nations represented in our flag procession.

Thank you to all who joined us in the celebrations!

ANZAC Day

Every year, YSS holds a special ANZAC Day ceremony.  This year, like many years before, will include class wreath laying, and the special significance of Honour Ave plays a part in our ceremony. Since 1924 the students at the school have brought along small individual bouquets which they take out to Honour Ave and place around the trees which were planted by the community after WW1 to remember the 97 men and women who came from the area and who lost their lives during the war.

All school community members are invited to join us for the ANZAC Day ceremony on Thursday 24th April at 9am on the main oval.   We encourage all students to bring a small posie of flowers in sustainable wrapping to lay around the trees on Honour Avenue during the ceremony.

The traditional ANZAC Day March on the 25th April will assemble on Park Rd near the tennis courts from 6:45am. The Parade will commence at 7:00 am from outside the school and will travel along Park Road, through Honour Avenue and proceed to the Cenotaph. All community members are invited to join us.

Student Council Fundraiser

The Student Council is hosting a fundraiser next week. Join us for some crazy fun!

Student Engagement

This year, we will begin to explore Amy Berry's Engagement Continuum—a helpful way of thinking about how children engage in their learning. The continuum reminds us that engagement isn't just about being busy or well-behaved; it's about how deeply children are thinking, questioning, and making connections. At school, we are exploring this tool to notice when students are simply "compliant" versus when they are truly curious and invested in their learning. Families can use this idea at home too.  You might notice when your child is going through the motions versus when they're excited, asking questions, or exploring something new. Encouraging them to talk about what sparks their interest can help move them along the continuum toward deeper, more meaningful engagement—whether it’s during work, play, or family conversations.
