Dear Families,
Please enjoy the holiday break with the children. Now more than ever, the holiday break is a time for our young people to get outside and play. Recently Georgia, Madeleine, Kaitlin and Hannah, took action on an issue at school. They collectively wanted to improve the Nature’s Play areas around the school and worked over a weekend to run a bake and sell store in their neighbourhood. The girls raised $23.05 for the Student Council to put towards the outdoor learning and play legacy committee. Thank you and congratulations girls!
Recently I have been reading The Anxious Generation -How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt. In The Anxious Generation, Haidt describes how, between 2010 and 2015, childhood and adolescence got rewired. With the advent of smart-phones and social media, time engaging face-to-face with friends and family plummeted, and so did mental health. He purports this has taken place incrementally in three junctures since the 1970s. Starting against a gradual loss of declining childhood freedom and free-play, as parents (and educators) over-supervised every aspect of their children's lives off-line (depriving them of the experiences they most need to become strong and self-governing adults). Ironically, against a drastic increase in under-supervision and freedom on-line.
I support our PandC and school staff for taking on this issue in partnership as a school community. In the absence of legislative guidance on the issue for primary school age students, we can design solutions for how our students continue to access technology as they learn and engage with the curriculum, whilst protecting them from harm. I look forward to seeing many of our parents at the upcoming forum run by our PandC on this topic.
Next semester we say farewell to some much loved and long-term staff. Teacher, Ms Lindsey Jobbins has been a staff member at Yeronga for 10 Years and recently accepted a transfer to Serviceton South State School. We wish Lindsey all the best in her new adventure and thank her for her commitment to YSS over so many years. Sadly, we say goodbye to our much-loved Tarnee Southwell. Tarnee has been successful in the acting Head of Special Education Services position at Sherwood State School. Again, we wish Tarnee all the best in her new role. This week we farewelled Sherrie Sward who has had a long association as parent and staff member for nearly 25 Years. I know our community share with me sincere best wishes for a wonderful next phase in your lives.
Please look out for the email on Wednesday with your child’s Semester Report. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
Have a wonderful last week of term and a safe and happy holiday.

Learning asset: Self-Management
How can we help our children use self-management skills to regulate their emotions?
What is self-regulation?
Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your behaviour and your reactions to feelings and things happening around you.
It includes being able to:
- regulate reactions to strong emotions like frustration, excitement, anger and embarrassment
- calm down after something exciting or upsetting
- focus on a task
- refocus attention on a new task
- control impulses
- behave in ways that help you get along with other people.
Why self-regulation is important
As your child grows, self-regulation helps them:
- learn at school
- behave in socially acceptable ways – because self-regulation gives your child the ability to control impulses
- make friends – because self-regulation gives your child the ability to take turns in games and conversations, share toys, and express emotions in appropriate ways
- become more independent – because self-regulation gives your child the ability to make appropriate decisions about behaviour and learn how to behave in new situations with less guidance from you.
How and when self-regulation develops
Children develop self-regulation through warm and responsive relationships. They also develop it by watching the adults around them.
School-age children are getting better at controlling their own wants and needs, imagining other people’s perspectives and seeing both sides of a situation. This means, for example, that they might be able to disagree with other children without having an argument.
Pre-teens and teenagers are better at planning, sticking with difficult tasks, behaving in socially appropriate ways, and considering how their behaviour affects other people. For example, your teenage child might think about your perspective when they’re negotiating with you about their curfew.
Helping children and teenagers learn and practise self-regulation:
Here are practical ways you can help your child learn and practise self-regulation:

Winter Big Play Concert
Our Winter Big Play showcase concert last Thursday was a wonderful celebration of music. Over 130 Yeronga students performed across the five string ensembles and concert bands- congratulations to all students involved. Highlights included the confident sound from the Stradivari Junior Strings and the crowd favourite Senior Band performance of Oompa Loompa from Wonka. A big thank you to the support from the tuckshop, parent volunteers and Yeronga High School student volunteers in helping to make the night run smoothly.
A big thanks also to the parents who support their children in their music making with consistent practising and getting them to the early morning rehearsals.

Running Club
Running club will continue until the end of the year unless the weather makes it impossible to run safely or public health restrictions return. Sessions will be held on Mondays, from 3:15 to 3:45 and Wednesdays from 7:45 to 8:15 with Mr Bateman. Mr Sutherland will be holding his sessions on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:15. Remember that all of these sessions will occur on the main, or years 3-6. Parents are most welcome to participate.
YSS Athletics
Congratulations to Lawson. They have completed 2/3’s of their third consecutive grand slam or triple crown. Can any house stop them? Congratulations to all of our age champions and record breakers. It’s been an exciting period with many very high quality performances. Big thank you to Mr C and Mr S who have been prime movers in making events possible and run smoothly.
District Athletics
We are at that stage of the year again when Mr C and I will be selecting the squad for this event. The criteria generally include bettering a district or regional qualifying time or distance and being in the top two or three, in the case of bettering a Regional qualifier. Be prepared for a suite of forms to come your way, including permission to participate, permission to publish a student’s name (QRSS) and possibly permission to compete in discus. If these can be completed and returned rapidly, where applicable, it would be most appreciated.
Qld AFL Carnival
Mollie W and Abraham C competed at the Qld AFL championships with distinction. Mollie, however, was able to complete a unique double following her participation in the Qld Touch championship. She is the first student I can remember to be selected in two state team in different sports and within two weeks. It is an amazing achievement which shows her athleticism, but also a lot of game sense and intelligence. Well done to Mollie and congratulations to her and her family on an extraordinary achievement.
Football Goals
Please remember, that although these goals are metal, they are not built to be climbed upon. Please do not climb on them as you will be endangering yourself, damaging the goals and be the unhappy recipient of a white slip.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection (Years 4 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for students aged 10 to 12 years. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools (Eastern Taipans District).
In most sports we are encouraged to send only 2 students from the school that demonstrate a very high level of ability. The majority of these teams are under 12 teams. A good guide for this is:
- A representative club player
- A top performer in your sport outside of school
- Playing in higher age groups
- Consistently demonstrating outstanding performances in interschool sport fixtures and training sessions in the highest division.
In order to be considered to attend a District Trial students should make themselves known to either (Mr Bateman or Mr Curness) at least 2 weeks prior to the trials.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Premier’s Reading Challenge is on! Please download the reader form and have your completed form into the library by 23 August. Prep to Year 3 students need to read or have 20 books read to them and Year 5 – 6 only need to read 15 books. All our students can easily make this and earn them selves a certificate.
ICAS
Yeronga State School will be offering students the opportunity to participate in ICAS English, Mathematics, Science and Spelling. Special P&C FORUM - Tuesday 18th June - Curiosity Centre
The P&C are holding a special forum this coming Tuesday, 18th June, to seek parent and community views on the use and safety of online learning tools and devices within YSS.
The three main topics which will be discussed and moderated by a facilitator, will be the Parental and Educator involvement in:
- Cyber safety at home, before and after school, and during school hours;
- Digital competencies with the Australian Curriculum and implications for Yeronga State School
c. Mental health and wellbeing of primary school children in the digital age;
The monthly general meeting - which will be a shortened meeting - will occur at the special time of 6.30-7pm. The Forum will then commence at 7pm.
We would love as many people to attend as possible to hear from our school leadership team and contribute to this very important discussion.
Any motions that may arise from the Forum can, however, only be voted on by P&C Members.
To join up, please fill out our online form - P&C Sign UP
It takes 30seconds!
Junior Sports Day Sno Cones
The P&C will be selling Sno Cones at the Junior Sports Day for a gold coin donation.
If you are able to help out - even for a little while - between the hours of 10.30 am- 12pm or 1pm - 2pm , we would love to see you! Meet under B block and ask for Kristy!
2nd Hand jumpers at Uniform Shop
As the weather has turned decidedly chilly over the past couple of weeks, we'd like to let parents know that the uniform shop currently has second hand jumpers on sale for $5. Pop in and see Anthea on Monday mornings or Thursday afternoons if you need some extra warmth for your kiddo!
Lost Property Layout
There will be an opportunity to come and sort through any lost property from 745am on the last Friday of the term. We will be laying out everything in the undercover area next to the uniform shop and offering assistance for anyone looking for missing items
This will be the last opportunity to come and search for any lost items before everything is donated or repurposed before the start of next term.
Uniform Shop Price Rise
Due to rising supplier costs, there will be a slight increase on some uniform items from Term 3.
There has been a concerted effort to keep the price rise to a minimum and a lot of items will remain at the same price.
Zooper Doopers Last Day of School
The P&C will be selling $1 Zooper Doopers outside of the Grade 1 area and also at the Tuckshop from 3pm on the last day of school. Stop by, say hi and grab your end of term sweet treat!
Available Roles Within the P&C
Are you looking for a way to make your impact on our kids experience at school and to have a voice at the Yeronga P&C! This is your opportunity!
The P&C is still seeking a secretary to join the fun and friendly team. There is loads planned and would be a great opportunity to be part of shaping this and contributing to the school community.
Please contact Alex at President@yerongasspandc.org.au to learn more.
Thank You
Finally, another massive thank you to our wonderful school community who have supported the P&C through several events this term - if you sent a gold coin with your child for sno cones, bought an ANZAC Day Posy, purchased a Mothers Day gift, helped move dirt for the Tuckshop garden or volunteered your time in any way, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Every dollar raised by the P&C goes straight back into supporting our kids and our school.
We'd also like to thank the amazing Tracy, Annabel and Laina in the Tuckshop and Anthea in the Unform shop for their ongoing excellent care for our students and school community.
Have a wonderful break!
