Dear Families,
I hope you, as I have, thoroughly enjoyed the many opportunities to celebrate the achievements of the students and school over the past couple of weeks. Our first Art Soiree, was nothing short of magnificent and a truly uplifting event. Thankyou sincerely to all involved in its successful execution. The Big Sing/Big Play event, Swimming Carnivals, Awards Ceremonies and in our final week the Year 6 Graduation and Junior School Christmas Concerts. A truly wonderful end to the year.
To all of our families who are leaving us this year, I trust you take with you many happy memories and assurance your child has had a great education at Yeronga State School. Several of our families who have had a longstanding relationship with Yeronga will have their last child leaving Year 6 this year, thankyou for your partnership over many years and all the very best for the future.
To our treasured staff who are leaving us this year, thankyou for your dedicated service to the children and families of Yeronga. Mr Bibby, Ms Lancaster, Mr Riley and Ms Legovic thank you for your great teaching and may your next chapter be as rewarding. Mr Quirk will be taking long service leave for the first half of next year. We wish him a wonderful break from teaching and look forward to his return later in 2023.
You may have heard our treasured Stacey and Yvonne in the Tuckshop have been offered permanent employment with Yeronga State High School as the new Tuckshop and Uniform Shop convenors. We know that Stacey and Yvonne will be welcomed familiar faces by our ex-Yeronga students over at the high school. We wish you both all the very best and thankyou from the bottom of our hearts for the countless moments of love and nurturing you have poured into this school and its children over many years. You are the heart of our school, both figuratively and physically. We will miss you immensely.
Please take the time to say a special goodbye to these treasured staff. We look forward to welcoming returning staff and new staff in the new year.
School returns for students on Monday 23 January, 2023 and for teachers on Wednesday 18 January. Class lists will be emailed to parents on the afternoon of Wednesday 18 January. Please look out for messages regarding book pack delivery times and uniform shop opening hours in this newsletter and Schoolzine/email communications.
A final word from me;
Thank you for your ongoing partnership. Enjoy the summer break with your children and loved ones. Life is short and childhood precious. Make the time and take the time to enjoy them.
Yours in education,
Eunice Webb
Principal
We are coming to the end of the 2022 school year. The children are engaged in various activities over the last week of school. The teachers are constantly amazed with how much the children have grown over the 12 months. We are grateful for our parent community that supports the learning that takes place at school. As a leadership team, we look forward to seeing you all at the many events that are scheduled over the next week.
AFTER SCHOOL ON SCHOOL GROUNDS
Just a gentle reminder to follow school rules before and after school. We love having children in the school grounds after school and understand that it is a lovely time to connect with families in the community. However, there has been some children playing in the nature play areas before and after school – we ask that this does not occur as this is not a before or after school play area. We thank you in advance for this.
Swimming Carnivals
The weather was on our side this week for the Senior and Junior Swimming carnivals. Students in year 1 enjoyed participating in freestyle and backstroke, and some year 2 students swam breaststroke too. It was so lovely to see so many children trying their best. The competition was fierce in the senior carnival, with many students swimming the 50m events and even a setting a few new records.
All students participated well, and contributed to house points.
Lawson took out the winning title...their third big win of the year after winning sports day, cross country and now the swimming carnival! Way to go Lawson!! Its been a long time since one house has won all three carnivals.
A special thanks to all the House Captains, who supported all students both in and out of the pool at both carnivals. Their initiative to help out where needed, and lead their teams by supporting their peers was outstanding. Thank you captains!
Our biggest thanks to Mr Bateman and Mr Curness, who quietly work for weeks bringing the carnival together. There are many moving pieces to such big events, and we certainly couldn’t do it without all the staff and community support. Thank you to all of our helpers!
Art Soiree and Art Exhibition
Last weekend, we celebrated our student art works at the Art Soirée. Our Curiosity Centre was filled with thoughtful and inspiring art works created by all students from prep to year 6. It was so lovely to see students express themselves, and important world issues through their art.
A special thank you to our Principal Eunice Webb, who has passionately brought all things art into the spot light at Yeronga State School this year. To our dedicated art teachers Jess Greenfield and Liby Elcome, we say a huge thank you! You have worked tirelessly all year to nurture our children’s inner artists, and showcase their talents on such a wonderful night.
Thank you to those who came to the Art Soiree to celebrate our students and to the PandC for organising the refreshments. It was lovely to see so many families visiting the Curiosity Centre throughout the week to explore the art works.
PREP ORIENTATION/ PREP AND YEAR 1 MOVE ON MORNING
Recently, the Prep teachers hosted the new 2023 children and families. It was a lovely morning where children were welcomed into classrooms, met the prep teaching team and engaged in activities. This morning also was set aside for the current Prep children to go to the year 1 building and learn all the wonderful things they will do next year. The Year 1 children also moved on to Year 2 – once in the Year 2 building they learnt about the different eating areas, toilet spaces, playgrounds and learnings. This transition was set up to ensure children have a sense of what next year will look like. Over the coming week children will inquire into what the following year will look like, sound like and feel like – this is organised by teachers in an effort to create a smooth transition to the next year level.
E-Safety Kids
This week’s E-safety kids message focuses on Sharing my personal information online. The E-safety commissioners webpage has some great information and steps to follow to support students. Personal information is as precious as the keys to your house. Giving these keys to the wrong people, even by accident, can be like allowing a stranger into your house without you even knowing.
Personal information may include your:
- full name
- address
- phone numbers
- which school you go to
- date of birth
- email address
- usernames and passwords for online accounts or email accounts
- parent or carer’s bank or credit card details
- photos that show where you live or your school uniform.
How can I protect my personal information?
- Avoid using your full name online — choose a screen name that does not include your real first or last name or use a nickname instead.
- Don’t lie about your age — lots of social media apps have a minimum age rating of 13. This is because some of the content may not be safe for kids.
- Only friend or follow people you know — if you receive a friend request from someone you don’t know it is best to delete their request.
- Keep your email and phone number private — your email address might contain your name and you don’t want to get unwanted texts, calls or emails.
- Don’t fill in all the fields on forms — if you sign up for something online, like a competition or quiz, only fill out the fields that are marked with an asterisk (this symbol *).
For more information to share with your children about being safe online, click here: https://www.esafety.gov.au/kids/I-want-help-with/personal-information-online

Farewell Tuckshop Manager, Stacey Resetti
Recently tuckshop manager, Stacey Resetti, announced to the P&C that she would be leaving Yeronga State School. After 8 years at the school, Stacey will be leaving at the end of this year to take up a larger opportunity at Yeronga State High School. We are disappointed but excited for Stacey and know the High School will benefit from her professionalism, care and, above all, great food. Stacey was a fantastic person to have running our tuckshop. Always honest and straightforward in her dealings with the P&C Executive, volunteers, children and staff, Stacey was a genuine asset to the school. She is irreplaceable.
...but replace her we must.
The Yeronga State School P&C is looking for a new tuckshop manager. If you have experience running a food outlet and wish to work child-friendly hours please contact Hamish at president@yerongasspandc.org.au or Chris at secretary@yerongapandc.org.au

Hampers Campaign
Thank you to a wonderful school community for your generosity to the 2022 Hamper Campaign. I have been able to make up 13 hampers entirely from your donations alone, which is a new school record. Well done everyone! Hampers will be distributed next week to our lovely families.
Get Ready for 2023
I wish many blessings for the families that are leaving our school community, and hope that it will be a positive experience in going to your new schools. You can continue getting my Chappy life-skills messages on social media at “Community_Chaplain” and you are also welcome to connect with me even if you have moved on.
For those who will continue to be with us, term 1 in 2023 is already shaping up to be a great start of the year. Here are some highlights to look forward to:
- Harmony Day will be back first term, as well as Chappy Week. I will be holding a hula-hoop competition, so you might want to encourage your children to do some practicing over the holidays.
- Fundraiser - “Car Boot Sale / Suitcase Rummage” in late March. As you clean up around the home over the holidays, consider whether you might like to sell those toys, clothes, and bric-a-brac. At the same event, I will host a second-hand book stall and plant stall, so your donations next year would be much appreciated.
Enjoy the summer holidays, and spend quality time with those that you love. I hope you have time to be refreshed and energised for the new year. Thank you for your support and help this year. I’ve enjoyed being your Chaplain!
Blessings, Chappy Jenny

Running Club
Running club has resumed in Term 4 and will continue until the end of term unless the weather makes it impossible to run safely or public health restrictions return. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays, from 3:15 to 3:45, with Mr Landeck and Thursdays from 7:45 to 8:15 with Mr Bateman. Mr Sutherland will hold his sessions on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:15. Remember that all of these sessions will occur on the main, or years 3-6, oval.
Swimming Carnivals
A very big thank you to all of our staff and parents for their help in making the Junior and Senior Swimming Carnivals the smooth-running events they were. I am also grateful to our students who were such great spectators and competitors. Special mention goes to Faith Hage who ran our results tent so well, Hamish Curness who was wonderful on the microphone, Paul Sutherland who marshalled so well and is always our prime mover as far as the set up and pack away goes and to Stefanie Kirk who ensured that all children at school and at the pool were well supervised.
Swimming Carnival Results – Awesome Lawson
I am not sure if I have seen a house win all three carnivals; Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming, before. Former Principal; John Johnson, would be able to tell me. He has an amazing memory for sports facts. Congratulations on a monumental achievement.
The age champions were:
Boys | Girls | |
8 Yrs | Noah B | Natalia A |
9 Yrs | Archie C | Josie V |
10 Yrs | John H | Mollie W |
11 Yrs | Oliver C | Layla B & Sophia G |
12 Yrs | Matthew T | Saskia A |
There were five new sensational records:
8 Years Girls 50m Butterfly: Natalia A (57.91s)
8 Years Boys 50m Butterfly: Noah B (58.34s)
11 Years Girls 50m Breaststroke: Layla B (44.24s)
11 Years Boys 50m Breaststroke: Toby A (44.70s)
11 Years Girls 50m Butterfly: Layla A (36.95s)
All in all a fantastic event. Well done everyone!
