Dear Families,
Welcome back to Term 2. The glorious weather over the past two days has lifted spirits. A sense of hope and optimism pervades as we look forward to a productive term ahead.
We welcome Anthea Grant to our Student Inclusion and Engagement team. Anthea is our newly appointed HOSES (Head of Special Education Services). The full-time position of HOSES for Yeronga State School from 2022 will greatly enhance the delivery of support provisions to students with disability and we are most excited to have Anthea’s skills to enhance programming for students across the school. The purpose of support provisions is to reduce barriers for a student with disability’s access to the curriculum. This is done in collaboration with parents, support teachers, classroom teachers and visiting specialists who identify, plan and make reasonable adjustments for individual students. Having a HOSES allows for greater collaboration and consultation with families and staff. At YSS we additionally resource teacher time to support Gifted Students as well as work with teachers to differentiate classroom instruction for highly able students.
Preparation for the tests to be conducted online is now completed. A practice test took place in the last week of term to ensure the school’s infrastructure and back up plans were in order. A few minor issues were identified such as the app not being downloaded onto some individual student iPads. Our NAPLAN online coordinator Liz Kemp has been working with our school technician to address identified concerns. The tests provide useful longitudinal data about school literacy and numeracy performance as well as a general point in time snapshot of an individual student’s literacy and numeracy skills. Classroom teachers use the report information to identify trends across cohorts as well as to triangulate individual student data with other diagnostic information to individualise programs for identified students. Yeronga State School will conduct the tests during Week 4 of Term 2 from Tuesday 10th- Friday 13th May.
Our Guidance Officer Robbie Spence, Chappy Jenny and Inclusion Support Teacher, Sally Ainsworth have been supporting parents over the past few weeks at Parent Café held under the Year 1 Building. This wonderful initiative will continue every Tuesday morning from now on.
At the end of Term 1 our Student Leader Induction ceremony was an opportunity to acknowledge the role our senior students play in the legacy of Yeronga State School. All Year 6 students were acknowledged for the legacy committee leadership as well as those students who are our 2022 positional leaders by The Hon. Mark Bailey MP. Student Council leaders were presented their badges by Cr. Nicole Johnston. It was a very special morning and wonderful to see so many families in attendance. I thank especially, DP Stef Kirk and Student Council Coordinator Katie Mc Dermot and the Year 6 Teachers for their dedication to the student leadership program at Yeronga State School.
The school continues to operate within major construction sites. The PandC funded landscape project is due to be completed in the next week which is a major enhancement to our entire school. I am sure this PandC funded project will involve much celebration in the coming weeks. The handover of the new administration, classrooms, curiosity centre and staffroom is on target for the end of Term 2.
Subsequent to the special PandC Meeting held on Tuesday 15 March, 2022 and decision to tender for a new YOSHC approved provider, no time has been wasted in progressing this process. The importance of an Outside Hours School Care service within the grounds of local schools is an essential need for modern families and all involved are very mindful of what is at stake. The tender process to appoint a new approved provider will take approximately three (3) months.
I am working closely with the department of education procurement branch to ensure this process is expedited as a matter of urgency for our community. Following the community satisfaction survey that went to parents at the end of term 1 it is evident the YOSHSC service is held in high regard by our families and the desire for a service that aligns with our community values be retained. I will continue to update the community on the tender progress.
I hope to see many of our students in formal school uniform accompanying our student leaders and leadership team for the ANZAC Day march on Monday 25 March. We will leave from the School Administration carpark at 7.00am.
Have a wonderful week,
Eunice Webb

Please consider sustainable wrapping on your posies. Students will need to wear formal school uniform and a hat.

Halogens National Young Leaders Conference
In the last week of term 1, Student councillors from year 3 to 6 participated in The National Young Leaders Day at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Students listened to guest speaker talk about their learning and leading journeys. We heard from Her Excellency, The Honourable Jeanette Young, Governor for Qld, authors and producers Guy Edmonds and Matt Zeremes, Olympian Cate Campbell, and pilot Lachie Smart. Guest speakers shared their triumphs, failures and everything in between with common themes of perseverance, passion and the importance of finding a mentor and surrounding yourself with the right people.
What a pleasure to be part of this extraordinary experience. The Student Council look forward to using their learnings to drive improvement in our school.

Senior School Deputy Principal
Welcome back to Term 2!
Parking
Just a reminder to parents that all carparks within the school grounds are for staff parking only. Parents using the carparks for student drop off and pick up is a safety hazard. Many staff are becoming increasingly concerned that a student will be injured whilst walking through the carpark.
- For school pick up and drop off, the Stop-Kiss & Go zone is for 5 minute parking only and you must stay with your car
- For any extended parking, all day parking is available in Honour Avenue and neighbouring streets
- If parking in streets, please be mindful of our neighbours and don’t park across driveways or footpaths
- Parents using the YOSHC Service are also not allowed to access the carparks and need to park outside school grounds
The only exception to this policy is for those parents who need to use the disabled carparking spots in the A Block and the Tuckshop carpark. If you need access to the disabled carparking bay, please contact the Office.
Late Arrivals and Early Pick up
A reminder to parents that if your child is arriving at school after 9am they are required to come to admin to collect a late slip before going to class. If you need to pick your child/ren up early from school, Parents are required to come to the office to collect a sign out pass before going to the classroom.
For student collection after 9am and before 2pm parents are welcome to park in the Stop Kiss Go Zone for longer than 5 minutes.

ANZAC Day 2022…
You are invited to attend the Stephens RSL ANZAC Day service which begins at 7:30am at Yeronga Memorial Park, honouring those who have served our country and community. Students can also assemble and walk with staff along Honour Avenue to the park from 7am (meeting at 6:45am). The Stephens Sub-branch is one of the smaller RSL clubs in Brisbane, meeting in their venue on the corner of Annerley and Ipswich Roads once a month. While they are small in number and don’t have an attached gaming and function club, they provide great support to their members, and run community services throughout the year for ANZAC Day, VP Day (Victory in the Pacific), and Remembrance Day. I look forward to seeing you there to support the veterans of our community.

Representative Sport Dates Release (Important)
The trial dates for term one of 2022 are listed below.
District Sport and COVID
Please remember the following district/regional policy if your child is attending district or regional trial in term 2:
“In light of the department’s back to school Covid Safe Plans and Practices, as well as restrictions imposed by various school venues running many of our trials, we have made a decision that NO SPECTATORS will be permitted to attend Eastern Taipans District Sports Trials until further notice.”
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
