Dear Families,
Academic Reporting
This year, to align with the changes to Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum, semester Prep Report cards will look different with a reduction in the learning areas receiving an achievement and effort grade. From 2025 only English, Mathematics and Health and PE will receive an overall achievement grade for Prep students. All other learning areas the Prep students participate in, are delivered by specialist teachers as experience only. All students in other year levels with receive an achievement and effort grade for each learning area. At Yeronga State School all students receive an overall Behaviour grade and overall comment referencing our YSS Learning Assets. Reports are not emailed to parents until the last week of Term, in the meantime if you have any questions regarding your child’s progress, please direct these to your classroom teacher.
Child Safety Survey
The safety, health and wellbeing of all children who attend education and care services is a priority. The Department of Education Queensland is seeking input. Now is the time to have your say on options to improve child safety in the education and care sector. Consultation is open until 11 June 2025. Everyone is encouraged to give feedback, especially educators, staff, and volunteers, as well as families, parents and carers (and their children). Click here for the parent, carer and family survey.

Child Safety -STOP DROP GO zone – Park Rd and Staff Carparks
Statistically, it is only a matter of time at Yeronga State School we experience a near miss or actual critical injury to a child in one of our carparks, on the crossings or STOP, DROP and GO zone due to adult behaviour. The safety of our children is dependent on the lawful and responsible behaviour of drivers.
- STOP DROP GO- this is not a parking zone. Drivers must remain in their car and move forward in queue towards the front of the zone as students are loading or disembarking.
- PEDESTRIAN AND LIGHTS CROSSING ZONES – adhere to road rules and speed limits.
- CARPARKS – no child is to be in a school carpark for any reason. Parents must be loading and disembarking children in the allocated street parking areas.
Staff Professional Learning - Berry Street Education Model (BSEM)
All staff completed Domain One of the four-day BSEM course. Domain One takes participants through the theory and evidence from allied sciences of education, psychology and social care that inform classroom practices to support student regulation in the school environment.
The four areas covered in Domain 1.
- The impact of adversity on learning- trauma informed/strengths-based strategies for supporting students.
- The protective nature of consistent and predictable routines – inherently soothing and regulating routines are foundational to all.
- Body Awareness – understanding the stress response/unmet needs and the concept of regulating the body first.
- Dysregulation and regulation – Ready to Learn/Ready to Teach
What a glorious day we had Friday to celebrate Under 8s Day. Please look out for the pictorial celebrations in our communications platforms. I look forward to seeing many of you on Monday at our Sorry Day Assembly which marks the commencement of Reconciliation Week and our YSS Reconciliation Action Plan. I thank the key staff involved in organising these important community events on our school calendar and for the key role they play in a welcoming school community where all belong.

Thank You for the Welcome! - Talia O'Sullivan
Dear Families,
I wanted to take a moment to share how warmly I have been welcomed into our school community as the new Deputy Principal of the senior school. From my very first day, I have felt an incredible sense of belonging and support, thanks to the kindness and openness of both staff and students. It’s truly inspiring to be part of such a wonderful community where everyone works together with a shared commitment to our students’ growth and success. I look forward to continuing to build strong relationships with you all as we work collaboratively to create a positive and nurturing environment for every child.

Library News - Bookfair Next Week
Scholastic Bookfair
Thank you to those parents who generously support our bookfair and book clubs. We have been able to spend over $2000 in resources for the library already this year. By hosting the bookfair twice a year we receive a 30% of the takings. Our goal this year is to revamp our non fiction books which are often much more costly than fiction series. Your support will help us with this goal.
District Cricket Nominations
Nominations for District Cricket will be made next week at first break on Tuesday 27 May. Any children who wish to trial should come to the nets with their kit. Remember that we can only nominate 3 to attend the district trial.
District Cross Country Squad Qualifiers
Finally it is unfortunate that not all of our wonderful runners can be selected in the district team. We were fortunate to have 7 selected though. Congratulations to Milana S, Jonah S, Harry G, Lennox Mc, Ruby B, Xavier T & Hudson M. These runners will compete in the regional cross country on 28 May. We all wish them good luck for that race.
Congratulations to Our New District Representatives
Congratulations to Jackson C for being selected for the Eastern Taipans 10 – 12 Boys Rugby team.
Congratulations to Finley C and Harry G for being selected for the Eastern Taipans 10 – 12 Boys Touch team.
Running Club
Running club will continue until the end of Term 4 on Mondays and Tuesdays, with Mr Bateman. The sessions will take place unless the weather makes it impossible to run safely. Sessions will be held on Mondays, from 3:15 to 3:45 and Tuesdays from 7:45 to 8:15 with Mr Bateman. Mr Sutherland will hold his sessions on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:15. Remember that all of these sessions will occur on the main, or years 3-6 oval. Parents are most welcome to participate.
Football Goals
Please remember, that although these goals are metal, they are not built to be climbed upon. Please do not climb on them as you will be endangering yourself, damaging the goals and be the unhappy recipient of a white slip.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection (Years 4 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for students aged 10 to 12 years. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools (Eastern Taipans District).
In most sports we are encouraged to send only 2 students from the school that demonstrate a very high level of ability. The majority of these teams are under 12 teams. A good guide for this is:
- A representative club player
- A top performer in your sport outside of school
- Playing in higher age groups
- Consistently demonstrating outstanding performances in interschool sport fixtures and training sessions in the highest division.
In order to be considered to attend a District Trial students should make themselves known to either (Mr Bateman or Mr Curness) at least 2 weeks prior to the trials.
