Dear Families,
At Yeronga State School we aim to ensure all children have the opportunity to experience the joy of being fully engaged and challenged in pursuits that match their talent and ability. This STEM project is a collaborative design challenge our YEP (Yeronga Excellence Program) students have been working on each Friday. The students are supported by a Teacher Aide on their projects. Here are Phoebe and Vivian with their ‘Giant Drop’ and ‘Merry go Round’ theme park rides.
Sadly, for the first time in my career, students using racist language is something I am hearing in the primary school environment on a regular basis. It will require a united front at home and at school to eradicate this abhorrent and ‘normalised’ use of racist language. Young children are not fully cognisant of the impact this language has on the person it is directed at. The school and home play an important role in educating the children about racism. In our Student Code of Conduct racist behaviour is a major breach of the Code of Conduct and may result in a suspension from school. The following link has some good points how an anti-racism stance may be fostered in the home. https://raisingchildren.net.au/teens/family-life/teens-racism/racism-talking-with-children-teenagers#why-its-important-to-talk-with-your-family-about-racism-nav-title
From 2025 an Anti-Racism program will become part of our strategic focus on belonging at Yeronga.
Have a wonderful week,
Eunice
Wishing the YSS Community a Happy Diwali!
Teacher Aide Mrs Nimkar celebrates the start of Diwali by wearing her beautiful saree.
Teachers would love to hear about and see pictures about how our families celebrate this occasion. Please let us know.
Teachers as Learners..
Inclusion teacher Sally Ainsworth recently invited YSS Educators to engage in a departmental online professional development session to improve our pedagogy for students with English as an additional language / dialect. Teachers learnt new strategies for facilitating oral language in all young learners.

Instrumental News
Congratulations to Junior Strings on their performance at Music Fest last week, receiving a Silver award for their performance in the Primary Intermediate category. The Juniors usually enter in the Primary Beginner category, but they are such a motivated group this year that we had a go playing more challenging music this year and I was really pleased with their efforts. Thanks as always to the parents for coming and supporting the performance, and thanks to the music captains Evie Duck and Josie Vankoningsveld for their assistance.
At the Senior Assembly this week we had a special performance assembly with performances from the Senior Strings conducted by Mrs Eastgate and Yeronga State High School performance groups- their Symphonic Band and Jazz Band conducted by Mr Grodecki and the Choir and Dance group.
Our exciting end-of-year Big Play concert is coming up on Thursday November 28 at the Yeronga State High School Cultural Center! All instrumental strings and band students will be performing. We have moved the start time earlier to 5:30pm with performers needing to arrive at 5pm. There is no entry fee but donations at the door will be accepted to go towards Instrumental Music Program equipment.
Tamsyn Eastgate (strings) and Alex Grodecki (band)
Bookfair
Hosting scholastic bookfairs helps us earn points to be able to buy extra resources for our library. By hosting two bookfairs a year we get a third of the sales back into the school.
Our second bookfair is coming soon. The containers arrive on 05/11/2024 and students will be able to create their wishlists during library lessons, library borrowing and break times. We emphasize that these are wishlists only and not must have lists, however, they do give great ideas for birthday and Christmas presents. You can choose to pay online or through eftpos. No cash purchases please.
Sales will be open on
Thursday 3:00 pm– 5:45pm
Friday 8:00am – 8:45am
Monday 8:00am – 8:45am (with students) 8:45 am– 9:30am Adults only
Monday 3:00am – 4:00am
Thanks you for your past support which has helped us get so many new resources. It is appreciated.
Running Club
Running club will continue until the end of week 8 (November 20) on Mondays and Wednesdays and Week 10 on Fridays, unless the weather makes it impossible to run safely. Sessions will be held on Mondays, from 3:15 to 3:45 and Wednesdays from 7:45 to 8:15 with Mr Bateman. Mr Sutherland will be holding his sessions on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:15. Remember that all of these sessions will occur on the main, or years 3-6. Parents are most welcome to participate.
Metropolitan West Athletics Representatives
Congratulations to all of the students listed below who have competed for the Metropolitan West Athletics Team in the Qld State Schools Athletics; Hyuga B, Clara J, Nina J, Phoenix L and Mollie W. Unfortunately only some of this tremendously talented group could qualify for the state team due to the calibre of the other athletes. We were lucky enough to have Clara J and Nina J qualify. What a tremendous achievement. These students will compete for the Queensland Athletics Team in Sydney on 28th of November to the 2nd of December.
Upcoming Swimming Carnival
As always we will need parental help staffing our Senior (Years 3 to 6) Swimming carnival. We are fortunate that the parent body has always been very generous in volunteering time. For the Senior (Years 3 – 6) Carnival, on 4th of December, we will need timers. If you can help please email Mr Bateman; cbate12@eq.edu.au .
Congratulations to Our State Representatives
A big congratulations to Mollie W & Mr C. They were a big part of Queensland winning the National Touch Championship last week. A massive effort by both of them in a pressure cooker competition. It’s worth noting that it was Mollie’s second state team for the year. I’ve only seen one other person represent 2 state teams in a year. Congratulations again Mollie on an outstanding year.
We have two new state representatives in discus and shot. We all should congratulate Nina and Clara J. It’s an outstanding effort in two quite technical events. They will compete at Nationals in Sydney.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection (Years 4 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for students aged 10 to 12 years. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools (Eastern Taipans District).
In most sports we are encouraged to send only 2 students from the school that demonstrate a very high level of ability. The majority of these teams are under 12 teams. A good guide for this is:
- A representative club player
- A top performer in your sport outside of school
- Playing in higher age groups
- Consistently demonstrating outstanding performances in interschool sport fixtures and training sessions in the highest division.
In order to be considered to attend a District Trial students should make themselves known to either (Mr Bateman or Mr Curness) at least 2 weeks prior to the trials.

Gala Day Touch Football
Last Friday saw the end of the 2024 Gala Days. We had 10 Touch Football teams participate over the 3 days. The teams played 3 games per day (total of 9 games) against schools from across our sporting cluster. It was great to see the development of both individual and team skills over the season. A big thank you to all the coaches for their efforts in training the teams and guiding them on the days. We were also supported by the Yeronga High student referees. We look forward to more of our past students returning in the years ahead to help with Gala Days. Three teams were awarded Premierships. Congratulations to all the players involved.

Gala Day Netball
We had an amazing time at the netball gala last Friday! Our students really represented the school well, showing fantastic teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day.
We’re excited to share the final results: three of our teams made it into the finals! A huge shoutout to Year 5 for securing 3rd place overall, and to 6A for coming in 4th. A special mention goes to 6C, who faced off against the tournament leaders in a nail-biting match, keeping them to just 2 goals (final score 0-2). Considering that team scored a whopping 99 goal difference during the gala, our girls should be incredibly proud of their performance!
Thanks to our super YSHS volunteers- they were champions.
Great job, everyone! We can’t wait for next year’s gala!

Prep and Year 1 Parents:
The teachers request that you do not cover or label Prep or Year 1 Books, as this will be done by the teachers in class.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support our P & C by coming along to meetings, volunteering their time at events and getting involved in P&C fundraisers. Our next P and C meeting is the last one for 2024 and it will be a big one. Why? We will be discussing our events calendar and planning some goals for 2025. We will be on the lookout for event leaders and locking in some exciting new events to hit our fundraising targets.
Tuckshop news
A reminder that the tuckshop is no longer selling more than two ‘Zooper Dooper’ iceblocks at a time. In 2025 we will be working hard to ensure our tuckshop can deliver affordable, healthy meals and snacks for your children. Please consider signing up on Flexischools to volunteer for a shift in the Tuckshop. Tuckshop volunteering is great fun, gives you a chance to meet other parents, and helps keep prices down!
