Dear Families,
Isn’t it lovely to feel the warm weather finally arriving? The following week is looking like perfect Brisbane weather. Please consider the uniform items your child has tucked in bags or potentially sitting in lost property. Whilst the mornings are still cool, by play time at 11.00am the outdoor play areas are hot and sunny. Hats are essential for students to be playing outside. Whilst we have lovely tree shade throughout much of the grounds, students are still required to wear a hat unless indoors or under a roofed area that provides solid shade.
As you know this year is our Quadrennial School Review Year. As part of the review year a range of activities to engage stakeholders in planning for our 2025-2028 Strategic Plan have been planned.
A Community Forum has been planned for Tuesday 15 October 5-7pm in the Curiosity Centre.
All members of the school community are invited to this event, so please mark this event in your calendar as we are hoping for a broad range of families to capture the diversity of opinion and ideas within our parent community. This roundtable process is designed to identify the shared priorities and strategic direction of the school over the next few years. The forum will be facilitated by school staff and light refreshments provided.
Shortly, families will receive a survey requesting intentions for 2025, particularly if students will not be returning to YSS after the summer break. Parents will also receive an invite to provide information regarding their child’s placement. This information is what the parent would like to be considered when classes are created. Due to the number of in-catchment Prep enrolments commencing in 2025, Yeronga State School will not be taking out of catchment Prep enrolments. At this stage out of catchment enrolments for Years 1-6 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Have a wonderful week,
Eunice
2025 Class Allocation considerations
Parents and Carers are encouraged to use the form below if they have any considerations they would like the school to know when allocating students to classes for 2025. This information will be considered alongside staff recommendations when allocating students to classes.
This form will close on Friday 1st November 2024.
You can access the form here: https://yerongass.schoolzineplus.com/form/994
Stop Kiss Go & Crossing Safety - Don't park on Yellow lines
For the safety of all of our students, please don't park on the Yellow lines. Traffic right against the crossing block the view of oncoming traffic for the crossing guard, and makes the crossing more dangerous.
Staff Spotlight
Congrats Mollie!
Congratulations Mollie, for your silver medal at the National AFL championships. YSS is proud of you!
Congratulations and well done to all year 6 students who participated in the year 6 school camp in week 5 of term 3!
Student enthusiasm, respect, responsibility and effort was very evident with students enjoying the varied activities offered at Tallebudgera Beach School over four days. Many students stretched their personal challenges and in doing so achieved success and a great sense of accomplishment. Students are to be commended on their excellent behaviour.
Activities included being part of a Welcome to Country, hiking in the national park, wake boarding, bodyboarding, swimming, team building pursuits, kayaking, visiting David Fleay Wildlife Park and experiencing an escape room to build on problem-solving skills and team work. Night activities included music and dance trivia, a magic show, an ecology presentation and a movie.
Students absolutely loved the experiences, and some have even said it was their favourite camp! Many thanks too to all staff who organised and attended camp.
Chamber Strings Workshop and Performance
This term the Chamber Strings students had the opportunity to participate in a music workshop excursion at Yeronga State High School. They formed a combined string ensemble with the YSHS strings students and rehearsed two challenging pieces with guest conductor Clare Cooney. Clare shared many techniques with the students to help them develop their ensemble skills and play with more musical expression. This week the students showcased what they learnt with a confident and engaging performance at the YSHS Instrumental Music Performance Evening.
Student Achievements
Congratulations to the strings students who performed at the recent AUSTA Strings Festival. Sarah, Richard, Michael N, Anna N and Tristan each performed a solo strings piece in front of an audience at one of the concerts held throughout the day at St Peters Lutheran College and received a report from the adjudicator and a participation trophy.
Congratulations also to students who recently completed challenging AMEB music performance exams- Frances was awarded her grade 1 certificate on Viola and Evelyn was awarded grade 1 on Violin.
Upcoming Instrumental Music events:
Thursday August 29 Instrumental Music Recruitment Information Evening for year 2 and 3 students- 6:30pm in the school hall
September 3-5- Southside Senior Music Workshop at Chandler Theatre for selected year 6 strings and band students.
Sunday October 20- Junior Strings MusicFest performance at Ferny Grove State High School. Morning performance between 10-12pm, exact performance time TBA.
Instrumental Music Recruitment Information Evening
The Instrumental Music Information Evening for families with students who are interested in joining the school’s Strings or Band program in 2025 will be held on Thursday August 29 at 6:30pm in the school hall. Current Year 2s are eligible to apply for the Strings Program (in Year 3 2025) and current Year 3s can apply for the Band Program (in Year 4 2025). This is in alignment with Queensland Education Department Policy. If a student wishes to be considered for selection in the 2025 Instrumental Music program, it is highly recommended that the student and one caregiver attend the information evening. This will ensure all families have a comprehensive understanding of the program and are aware of the commitment and costs involved.
Parents will be able to register their interest in their child participating in the program at the information evening. If you are unable to attend, you will need to email the strings teacher Tamsyn Eastgate at teast42@eq.edu.au or the band teacher Alex Grodecki at agrod3@eq.edu.au prior to the information evening to ensure that we know that your child would like to apply for the program. Please note, if you do not attend the evening and we do not hear from you prior to the meeting, we will assume you are not interested in having your child progress further in the selection process for the Instrumental Music Program in 2025.
Participation in Instrumental Music at Yeronga is in high demand and there are limited places available. The selection process involves aural testing of all year 2 and 3 students, consultations with classroom and specialist teachers, and physical testing on the string or band instruments that allows students the opportunity to try out different instruments and determine their physical capability for an instrument.

Author Visit – Dr Cameron Stelzer, The Story Doctor
On Wednesday 28 August, we have a special visit from Author
and Illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer. Dr Cameron is visiting Yeronga State School to run workshops with our P-6 students. Prep students will enjoy an interactive Big Screen Book Reading with Cameron. Year 1-6 students will be taking a behind-the-scenes look at creating a book and applying their own creative components. Students and teachers are looking forward to a great day!
In conjunction with the Author Visit, Yeronga State School families have a special opportunity to purchase signed and personalised copies of Cameron’s books at special prices. Individual books are $10-$15 each and there are also exclusive book sets available. Students will receive an order form on the day of the workshops (payment is via the online payment portal listed on the form; no cash). Forms can be returned the following day, to the Library.
Running Club
Running club will continue until the end of the year unless the weather makes it impossible to run safely or public health restrictions return. Sessions will be held on Mondays, from 3:15 to 3:45 and Wednesdays from 7:45 to 8:15 with Mr Bateman. Mr Sutherland will be holding his sessions on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:15. Remember that all of these sessions will occur on the main, or years 3-6. Parents are most welcome to participate.
Eastern Taipans District Athletics Representatives
Congratulations to all of the students listed below who have had their selections confirmed in the Eastern Taipans Athletics Team; Hyuga B, Felix B, Finnley C, Clara J, Nina J, Phoenix L, Hunter N, Esha P, John-Allan S, George T, Mollie W, Skye W, Cash J-B, Natalia A and Abraham C. What a great achievement. These students will compete on 27 and 28 of August for selection in the Met West Regional Athletics Team.
Football Goals
Please remember, that although these goals are metal, they are not built to be climbed upon. Please do not climb on them as you will be endangering yourself, damaging the goals and be the unhappy recipient of a white slip.
Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection (Years 4 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for students aged 10 to 12 years. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools (Eastern Taipans District).
In most sports we are encouraged to send only 2 students from the school that demonstrate a very high level of ability. The majority of these teams are under 12 teams. A good guide for this is:
- A representative club player
- A top performer in your sport outside of school
- Playing in higher age groups
- Consistently demonstrating outstanding performances in interschool sport fixtures and training sessions in the highest division.
In order to be considered to attend a District Trial students should make themselves known to either (Mr Bateman or Mr Curness) at least 2 weeks prior to the trials.
