Dear Families,
Our ANZAC Day service at school continues to be a reverent honouring of those who have served our country. This year marked the 100th service at Yeronga State School and the tradition of laying posies at the feet of the memorial fig trees on Honour Avenue. This tradition is a humbling and moving experience or our youngest to our oldest. May it remain for 100 years to come. Lest we forget.
I am pleased to advise our community that we now have an appointed Student Welfare Worker. Jackie will commence at Yeronga State School next week and will work alongside our inclusion staff on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Following a period of induction and getting to know our school and students, I am Jackie will soon become an integral part of wonderful community.
This week I met with Brisbane City Council Transport Planning and Operations staff to discuss some of the safety issues regularly encountered on the Park Rd side of the school site. As a result, Council proposes to install yellow ‘No Stopping’ lines across the school’s emergency access driveway into the Year 1 area and install enhanced school zone signs at the pickup/drop-off. A plan has been submitted to undertake these works and it is expected for these works to be carried out in line with Councils current priorities. The driveway entrance to the Year 1 area is the only safe access for parents with children on cycles to disembark before entering the school site. Please do not park over the driveway.
At Yeronga staff we work towards three high leverage strategies to progress the flourishing and achievement of all; Collaboration, agency and engagement. Here are some images of staff collaborating in recent professional learning opportunities with staff from other schools;
Have a wonderful week,
Eunice
School Bells
Over the Easter holidays, our bell system was updated and our external speakers were upgraded and fixed. This week, the year 6 students have brainstormed a lot of great songs to use on our bells, and we’re excited to try some new ones out. Watch this space and listen out for our new bell songs!
ANZAC Day
Last week, our community came together for our annual ANZAC day ceremony. A special thank you to the community guests for coming along and our guest speaker Mr Cody Tsaousis, Public Affairs Officer-7th Brigade for your inspirational speech.
Our School Captains Skye, Piper, Owen and Seb did a fantastic job at leading such a special school event.
Sustainability Legacy Committee
The Sustainability Legacy committee is committed to making our school Greener! Maybe you can adopt some of these strategies at home as well.
Inquiry Learning
Educators at Yeronga State School work around the big question, 'How do we help our students take their place in the world?' Adopting an inquiry stance in our teaching and learning programs is a positive step in helping us ensure we are doing the right work at the right time with our students. We want to provide a curriculum that is relevant and engaging and so we harness our local environments and students ideas around how to take real actions to make change related to what matters most to them.
Outdoor Learning and Play at YSS. Why do we value it?
You are invited to attend a short working bee on Sunday 12th May 2 - 4pm. We will be tidying the area behind Prep 1, to prepare it as another nature's play area for our Prep students.
Year 5 and 6 Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The department and our school are looking at ways to collect information on these topics so we can support our students in the best way possible.
The Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey is designed to measure how state school students view their wellbeing and engagement.
Results from this survey will tell us about students’ levels of wellbeing and engagement. This information will allow us to better support our students and meet their needs.
The QEW Survey is run over the next couple of weeks in years 5 and 6.
What is the survey about?
The survey measures many aspects of students’ wellbeing, engagement, and experience at school.
The survey asks about:
resilience
school climate
relationships (peers, teachers, home)
sense of belonging
motivation and perseverance
academic self-concept
personal social capabilities
future outlook and aspirations
general life satisfaction
general health
What is involved in participation?
Teachers will arrange for students to take part in the Survey online during class time. It will take about 30 minutes to complete. If your child requires additional assistance, teachers and/or support people are able to help them.
Does your child have to participate?
Participation in the survey is voluntary.
Your child will also be asked if they would like to participate before starting the survey. They will be free to stop or withdraw at any time.
If you do not wish for your child to participate in the QEW Survey, please email DP Stef Kirk: skirk70@eq.edu.au
Your child will still get a link to the survey in their email even if you opt out, but they won’t be able to get into the survey without the access code given only at the time of completing the survey.
How will your child’s information be kept confidential?
The information collected through the survey will be kept confidential. No personal information will be shared with anyone outside of the Queensland Department of Education. The Queensland Department of Education will store the data according to strict guidelines. The collection of information is in line with the Educational General Provisions Act (2006) and the Information Privacy Act (2009).
How will your child’s responses be reported?
Student’s answers will be de-identified. They will only be reported back to the school as part of their year levels’ results. No one at your child’s school will be able to see their individual responses.
Where can I get more information?
More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website: https://qed.qld.gov.au/publications/reports/statistics/schooling/students/queensland-engagement-wellbeing-survey
You can contact the QEW Survey team by email: QEWSurvey@qed.qld.gov.au.
Library News - 2024 Premier’s Reading Challenge
We are delighted to invite all Yeronga State School students to join in the 2024 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC).
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, from 7 May to 23 August. Enclosed is a reader record form to tally book read throughout the challenge.
To complete the challenge:
- Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
- Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
- Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2024 challenge is to encourage students to make time to read. Last year saw more than 110,000 children from around the state participate.

District Cross Country Carnivals
What a great day! I’ve so many people to thank. Many thanks to the Yeronga State School parents for providing transport and staying to cheer.
Finally thanks to our students. Their behaviour and performances on the day were wonderful to watch. There were some great performances both for the top 6 places and outside them. Unfortunately I can’t elaborate on them all, but Phoenix L’s performance in winning the 11 years Boys event by at least 300m was outstanding. Please see the placings for all of our runners below. Remember that those who finished in the top 6 have been offered the chance to compete for the Eastern Taipans District at Met West Regionals.

Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection (Years 4 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for students aged 10 to 12 years. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools (Eastern Taipans District).
In most sports we are encouraged to send only 2 students from the school that demonstrate a very high level of ability. The majority of these teams are under 12 teams. A good guide for this is:
- A representative club player
- A top performer in your sport outside of school
- Playing in higher age groups
- Consistently demonstrating outstanding performances in interschool sport fixtures and training sessions in the highest division.
In order to be considered to attend a District Trial students should make themselves known to either (Mr Bateman or Mr Curness) at least 2 weeks prior to the trials.
