Principal News

Dear YSS community,
Over the last two weeks Tracy, Stef and I have been talking to students in class about how they use they use their learning walls to support their next steps to learning. Learning walls include co-constructed examples and non-examples, the marking guide (how they will be assessed), and co-constructed and student generated work. We have been very impressed by how students have articulated the clarity in where they are at in their learning and what they need to do to improve their learning. We are very proud of the high-quality teaching and learning in our classrooms.
Leveraging Digital
As you are aware, Yeronga State School works with the mental model that ‘We are connected, curious, community minded learners and citizens who make a positive difference to our world’. As part of the ‘connected’ component, our Annual Implementation Plan breaks this down to describe how we will achieve this, through pedagogical partnerships and leveraging digital. As all staff at YSS have high expectations for our students, we continue to develop our own capability in digital platforms and using technology to enhance student learning. The P&C, at our most recent meeting, endorsed the new iPad Hire Equipment Scheme, which will commence from next year with our Year 4 cohort in 2024. Our Year 4 cohort in 2024 will use these iPads all the way through to Year 6. More information will be communicated in Term 4, including the 2024 booklist ordering process.
Bullying. No Way!
On Monday 28 August, 12:00pm in the hall, our Wellbeing Legacy Committee will host a special assembly to raise awareness for ‘Bullying. No Way!’ Students are strongly encouraged to wear orange on Monday. Parents and carers and invited to attend. Parent/carer resources are located here.
Bullying No Way! Day is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative for schools, encouraging whole-school communities to work together to implement evidence-informed positive and proactive solutions to prevent and address bullying.
This day is an opportunity to create a shared understanding of what is bullying, and show support to students who may be experiencing bullying.
The NDA theme for 2023 is 'growing connections'. This theme supports research findings that strong school community connections and social skills are protective factors in the prevention of bullying and help enable positive, help-seeking behaviours in students.
Staff celebrations
This week we celebrated our Speech Language Pathologist Nina W, for the work she does with our students in developing expressive and receptive language. We thank Nina for her tremendous support and value add to an already expert teaching team at YSS.
Next week, we celebrate our teacher aides. Our YSS teacher aides go above and beyond to support student learning and wellbeing and we thank them for their hard work and dedication to our school community. We recognise their contributions in not only what they do, but how they do it – a student centred approach to get the very best from our students. On behalf of YSS, I thank our teacher aides.
