Yeronga Wunya

NAIDOC week was held across the country from July 7 – 14 and we did a few things at Yeronga State School to celebrate NAIDOC week.

  • In the last week of term 1 Auntie Jeanette Fabila performed a ‘Welcome dance’ at the Junior assembly and talked about Aboriginal culture. The students had lots of questions for her.
  • On the last day of school students had a free dress day in the Aboriginal flag colours – black, red, yellow.

Kalari parent volunteer members, Aren Healy and Helen Hynd visited the Yeronga staff meeting to talk to the teachers about the Aboriginal history of the school and NAIDOC activities and links for teachers to use in the classroom. One of these ideas was to look at the book called Younger Dark Emu: A Truer History by Bruce Pascoe (a school’s version of the book that he wrote called Dark Emu which is designed to bring a different idea, a greater truth about the nature of Australia to young people).
