Deputy Principals Report

Zones of Regulation

Zones of Regulation is being used across the school to help students learn how to self-regulate. The Zones of Regulation creates a system to categorize how the body feels and emotions into four coloured zones with which the students can easily identify. Each fortnight, students learn about the Zones in their classes and set a goal to work towards for the next two weeks.  Consistent language across the school and home environments help students to generalise the skill of self-regulation. Students will be familiar with the following diagram and you may like to adopt these principles and the language at home.

Zones.jpg
  • Blue Zone: Used to describe a low state of alertness. The Blue Zone is used to describe when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored.
  • Green Zone: Used to describe the ideal state of alertness. A person may be described as calm, happy, focused, or content when he or she is in the Green Zone. The student feels a strong sense of internal control when in the Green Zone.
  • Yellow Zone: Used to describe a heightened state of alertness. A person may be experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, or fear when in the Yellow Zone. The student’s energy is elevated yet he or she feels some sense of internal control in the Yellow Zone.
  • Red Zone: Used to describe an extremely heightened state of alertness. A person may be experiencing anger, rage, explosive behaviour, panic, extreme grief, terror, or elation when in the Red Zone and feels a loss of control.

Student Council Movie Day

On Friday 11th June, the Student Council is holding a movie day and pyjama day.  Students are asked to wear their snuggly PJ’s to school and bring a gold coin donation for the student council fundraiser.

Preps/year 1/ year 2 will watch a movie in the morning session (9-11) and years 3-6 will watch a movie in the middle and afternoon sessions (12-3). Students can bring 1 pillow to make sure that they’re EXTRA comfy for movie time.

Student councillors are still nominating movies and fundraising ideas and will be casting votes in their classes this week.

Nude Food MONDAY 7 JUNE

Monday is our first Nude Food Day for 2021! Send your child to school with a nude lunch (no throw away packaging) and they could win some great prizes for their class or themselves. Be sure to label all containers with your child's name and class!

Uniform Reminder

As we are moving more into the colder months it is a timely reminder for children to wear the school approved winter uniforms – navy tracksuit pants and school jumpers with the school emblem or plain navy jumpers with no branding, stripes or hoods.

Please also ensure children come to school with their wide brim slouch hat or school bucket hat so that they can access the playgrounds at break times.

Bike Safety Program

Yeronga State School will be hosting the Bike Safety Program in the last week of Term 2.  The children will engage in various learning/s around bike and road safety.  The Prep – Year 4 classes will be engaging in a presentation and will be required to bring in a bike helmet if they have one.  The Year 5 – 6 classes will be engaging in a session that requires them to bring a bike and a helmet.  If your child does not have a bike or a helmet, please be aware that they are still able to engage and participate in the sessions.

These bike safety sessions aligns with Active School travel for the following reasons:

  • Active transport to school can increase concentration by up to four hours
  • The health benefits of cycling far outweigh the risks
  • 15 mins of exercise can improve a child’s mood
  • In Australia, it is recommended that 5–16 yr olds do 30 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous exercise every day

2021 Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey - Information for parents and carers

Why are we doing the survey?

We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The department and your school are looking at ways to collect information on these important areas so we can support our students in the best way possible.

The Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey is designed to measure how state school students view their wellbeing and engagement.

Results from this survey will tell us about students’ levels of wellbeing and engagement. This information will allow us to better support our students and meet their needs.

When will the survey take place?

The QEW Survey will take place on the 15th and 16th June

What is the survey about?

The survey measures many aspects of students’ wellbeing, engagement, and experience at school.

What is involved in participation?

Teachers will arrange for students to take part in the Survey online during class time. It will take about 30 minutes to complete. If your child requires additional assistance, teachers and/or support people are able to assist them.

Does your child have to participate?

Participation in the survey is voluntary. Choosing not to participate will not affect your child’s education in any way.

Your child will also be asked if they would like to participate before starting the survey. They will be free to stop or withdraw at any time.

If you do not wish for your child to participate in the QEW Survey, please contact your school.

Your child will still get a link to the survey in their email even if you opt-out, but they won’t be able to get into the survey without the access code given only at the time of completing the survey.

How will your child’s information be kept confidential?

The information collected through the survey will be kept confidential. No personal information will be shared with anyone outside of the Queensland Department of Education. The Queensland Department of Education will store the data according to strict guidelines. The collection of information is in line with the Educational General Provisions Act (2006) and the Information Privacy Act (2009).

How will your child’s responses be reported?

Student’s answers will be de-identified. They will only be reported back to the school as part of their year levels’ results. No one at your child’s school will be able to see their individual responses.

Where can I get more information?
