Green Team News

The Green Team have kicked off for 2021! We are keen to get to work and make our school even more sustainable!

With so many teachers and volunteers on board to help this year, we have organised ourselves into 6 task forces so that we can achieve so much more.  Each year it just gets bigger and bigger and more students are able to get involved.

Our task forces in 2021 are:

The Waste Warriors – this hard-working group will conduct lunch time litter pickups using our school set of litter pickers and waste collection bags (donated by Nicole Johnston in 2019)!

Recycling Renegades – this committed troupe will maintain our current recycling streams, initiate new streams where they see the need and educate the school community on anything recycling!

Nude Food Dudes – this year we’re going to see more Nude Food Days and lots of ideas on how to reduce your waste!

Carbon Crusaders – these new caped crusaders will be working out how we can reduce our school’s carbon footprint and educating us on how we can do the same at home!

Green Thumbs – these nature loving superstars will be greening up our school and helping us to compost more food waste!

Junior Green Team – this amazing team will be helping the students in the junior school to learn about composting, gardening and all things green!

I can’t wait to see what we achieve in 2021!

Clean up Australia Day 2021

For years, Yeronga SS has participated in Clean up your school day and collected tons of rubbish from around our school.  However, now that we have a dedicated Green Team task force to clean up litter, we’re not going to participate as a school!

However, if you’re a keen litter pickerer or you’re simply just sick of seeing rubbish all over our streets, you can still get involved in Clean up Australia Day on Sunday 7th March.  Go to cleanup.org.au to join a clean up site or register your own!

Cash 4 Cans recycling bins

Our Cash 4 Cans recycling bins (the big blue and yellow bins around our school) have been earning us quite a bit of cash with students recycling their tuckshop drink containers, school families bringing in their collections from home and members of the community dropping in their containers too!  You can also donate to our school at the container exchange centres by quoting our scheme ID: C10004300.

We’ve used the money to purchase paper straws for the tuckshop and a cage for our new beehive (which was kindly donated by the Kandel family) to keep it safe!  If you have any ideas on anything you think we could spend the money on that would make our school more sustainable, feel free to email me at nicoledeayton@gmail.com.

We’ve noticed that more food and rubbish than usual is ending up in these bins which not only makes emptying them an unpleasant job for Mr Sutherland, but it also means we get less money for our school.  Please discuss with your children what goes in the big blue and yellow bins, 10c refund containers only, (NO coffee cups, food containers, slushie cups or food waste).

Yours for the environment,

The Green Team
