Kalari – Celebrating Indigenous culture at YSS
International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples – 9 August
In this newsletter, Kalari invites everyone to think about Indigenous people all over the world. Last Sunday, August 9, was the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This day is celebrated around the world and marks the date of the inaugural session of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations at the United Nations in 1982.
This year’s theme is ‘COVID-19 and Indigenous Peoples’ Resilience’ and asks us to think about the many ways that Indigenous peoples continue to demonstrate resilience and strength in the face of the pandemic while confronting threats to their survival. This year the UN is considering how the preservation and promotion of Indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge and practices can be used and promoted more fully during this pandemic.
Yugara word for this week
Buran (Boo-ran), meaning ‘wind’.
As the August winds blow around us, we thought it would be good to learn the Yugara word for wind!
