On Wednesday evening, sixteen of our strings students performed at St Peters Lutheran College for the Queensland Youth Music Awards. These highly committed students are in the school’s most advanced string ensemble; the Chamber Strings and they’ve all been diligently giving up a lunchbreak each week to rehearse for the performance, with one student performing even though the performance was on his birthday!

Yeronga performed last in the program so the students first listened to some other school ensembles perform. QYMA attracts a very high caliber of performances from state and private schools with award-winning music programs, so this was a great opportunity for the students to be inspired and motivated by the other performances. 

The students were both nervous and energised to be performing in the state-of-the-art 1000 seat Dron Auditorium. When they got out on stage they performed with fluency and conviction and represented the school fabulously. We weren’t expecting to receive a 1^st, 2^nd or 3^rd place, but the students were thrilled to still receive a Gold award for their performance which is the highest category awarded in QYMA. The adjudicator commented that he was very impressed with the student’s performance.

The Strings program receives additional funding from the P&C on top of the government funding our school is allocated for instrumental music. The time for the Chamber Strings rehearsals is only possible because of this funding and so we’re so grateful for all the families that have made such an effort to fundraise for the P&C Colour Run.
