Gala Day Wrap Up (Year 5 & 6)
Boys A Division Football (Soccer)
Over the course of the last three Gala Days the Senior and Junior A soccer teams have gone to Sunnybank High School to play against other schools. All of our players showed great teamwork, supporting each other every step of the way both on and off the field. What shone through was the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by the Yeronga players. They exemplified the values of fair play and respect, making us proud not just of their athletic abilities but also of their character. And the results speak for themselves! Both teams achieved outstanding outcomes, a testament to their commitment and determination. Their achievements remind us of the power of perseverance and teamwork. The Junior Boys were the Gala Day Premiers and the Senior Boys were Runners up. Both teams will be moving on the SEQ Cup elimination games. (Mr Henry & Mr Curness)
Girls Basketball
Yeronga Basketball Girls for both year 5 and 6 faced some big challenges this year, but by working on our strategy, teamwork and skill development we all found our confidence both on and off the court. The competition was fierce, but YSS always put their best foot forward and showed kindness and gratitude above all else when playing every game. The biggest achievement was definitely the excitement and drive to learn and improve, both by attending additional training sessions and seeking individualised feedback from the coach and from one another. Well done girls! (Ms Nicholson)
Gala Day – Boys Basketball
The Boys Basketball competition this semester produced plenty of exciting high-energy games, with our Yeronga A and B teams both doing themselves and school proud. It was great to see both teams committed to giving their best and showing huge improvement, in all areas of the game, over the three days of competition. Although suffering some early losses on the first day of competition both teams worked their way up the ladder over the next two, improving their points differential and establishing positive win loss records. Congratulations to our A side who pushed the champions of the A competition to the limit in their final game and our B side who won 3 of their 4 games on the final day. (Mr Hartin)
Teeball
The year 5 and 6 girls and boys showed remarkable sportsmanship this year in the Gala Day Tee Ball competition. The first round was played at the Indians Baseball Club and students got to experience playing on the professional fields. The next two rounds were played at the Griffith University fields where students showed great adaptability to the change of venue. All the students played to the best of their ability, showed terrific teamwork and displayed great skills.
The senior girls' team was given an honourable mention as the most improved team of both the boys and girls competition. Whilst YSS did not win, the students learned team commitment, played enthusiastically and represented Yeronga State School admirably. A special mention is made to Gus and Neal in the boy’s team and Lexie and Maddi G in the girl’s team for excellent catcher duties. Well done to Georgia, Eleanor N and Frances for improved batting and fielding skills. Finally, a huge thankyou to Mrs Mitchell, our wonderful teacher aide, and Miss Potter who both supported me and the teams during the Gala Days. (Ms Masselos)
