GRIT – The power of passion and perseverence
I recently watched The Dawn Wall, a documentary on Tommy Caldwell achieving his 10 year dream of climbing the Dawn Wall in Yosemite National Park. Tommy was engaged in a fabulous struggle as he repeatedly failed in his attempt to conquer different pitches as he prepared for the climb over the years with his climbing partner Kevin. Their incredible commitment to achieving his dream reminded me once again of the need to develop grit in our students.
Grit is the determined pursuit of an important long term goal despite setbacks. Angela Duckworth believes that whilst talent and opportunity play an important part in whether you will be successful, two other factors are essential - `self-control’ and `grit’.
Self-control is about our capacity to deny ourselves an immediate reward in order to achieve a longer term goal. It is about `aligning our actions with valued goals when momentary rewards are available’. It differs from grit as grit is about our ability to sustain passion and effort for a long time. They both go hand in hand.
In these days of instantaneous rewards and a busy world, being able to exercise self-control and grit are more challenging than ever. According to Angela, to set our children up for a truly successful life, we need to do two things:
- give our children challenges to exceed what they were able to do yesterday
- give our children the support that makes growth possible.
It’s every day choices that help us achieve unbelievable feats.
- What long-term goals are you or your children trying to achieve?
- How are you or they measuring and celebrating your progress?
You can learn more about Angela Duckworth and her grit study here.

HARMONY DAY
It was wonderful to see so many parents take the time to join us for our annual Harmony Day celebrations. The flag ceremony was very moving with 81 flags representing the diverse cultural backgrounds of our students.
This term, I have been talking to our children about the importance of leadership when no one is watching. If I link this to Harmony Day, it is one thing to take the time to appreciate all our differences on Harmony Day however if it is not backed up by intentional actions to help everyone belong every day of the year then it is not delivering the impact we would wish.
- Do you greet, work and play with everyone equally?
- What can you do today, tomorrow, next week, next month, this year to help everyone feel that sense of belonging?
Thank you to staff (notably Chappy Jen, Deb Cowie and teacher aides) and students for making Harmony Day so special.
Talking to our children after a tragedy such as Christchurch can be very daunting. I saw this video by Sammy J and thought it may help if you have found yourself stuck on how to explain what terrorism is to your children.

STUDENT VOICE
Last week at the P&C meeting three Year 5 students took proactive steps to change a practice that they felt was significantly harming our environment. During their presentation Elyse, Charlotte and Anna highlighted how much litter the plastic straws create and requested a change to paper straws. It was lovely to see their passion and commitment to achieve a change they believed in. The P&C happily passed a motion to change this practice, beginning in Term 2.
APPRECIATION OF YERONGA SCHOOL CLEAN UP DAY
Thank You Nicole Deayton and Green Team. Last week we held Clean Up School day and I want to say thank you to Nicole and the Green team for the phenomenal effort in some extreme conditions to analyse this year's litter collection. The exercise was a huge success with all students happily and enthusiastically cleaning up our school environment. Nicole had organised for a member of the Brisbane City Council Waste Team to support the event with litter pickers and reusable waste collection bags, while the Green Team promoted the event by making posters, assisting students with the collection of litter and sorting the waste on the day. Nicole spent virtually the entire day focussed on ensuring everything went smoothly. She and the kids worked tirelessly in the heat to get the job done. Nicole then captured all the data for presentation to the school to raise awareness about litter and waste management principles. Understanding the waste management hierarchy is critical for this generation of students, so the whole exercise has been very beneficial for the YSS students.
FACILITIES
It was so exciting to see our new Prep building flying through the air over the weekend. The internal fit out of the building will commence this week and we believe the building will be handed to the school during Week 1 Term 2.
The Year 1 children voted on the new mini playground to be located where the mushrooms and dolphins are in the Junior school. The playground has been ordered and should arrive halfway through Term 2.
Solar lights have been installed at the Tuckshop car park entrance to allow parents and children to navigate to and from YOSHC safely. No parents should be parking in this car park at all. Doing so endangers our children’s lives.
Thank you to the P&C for approving air conditioning for all Year 4-6 class rooms this year. Staff and students are looking forward to some cooler conditions to work in next summer.
It has been a busy term with so many events happening. Thank you all for your wonderful patience, support and encouragement as we have worked our way through the term. I had to share the following link that perfectly captures the anxiety parents can feel when they realise their child has to dress up or bring a plate etc! What simple 5 minute recipe idea or dress up idea do you have that allows you to greet the school or childcare celebration days somewhat calmly?

Ms Vaggs – School Principal Binjour Plateau
It is with mixed feelings that I advise that Louise Vaggs, Head of Curriculum (HOC), has been successful in obtaining acting principal position for the rest of the year. Whilst I am truly delighted and excited to see Louise being given the opportunity to lead her own school, I know that we will miss her greatly. Louise has been an asset from the moment she joined the Yeronga team in 2012 as a Year 6 class teacher. She helped transition the Year 6/7 cohort to high school in 2014. In 2016 Louise won the position of HOC and has dedicated herself to ensuring our students have a reliable and challenging curriculum. Louise has been instrumental in leading the transition to an Inquiry approach. We are lucky to have benefited from her incredible skill and knowledge of curriculum and pedagogy. However it is Louise’s relational leadership that will be missed most of all. She has connected with staff, students and parents across the school. Many parents and children will miss Louise’s check ins from under the fig tree in the afternoon! We know Louise is going to make a brilliant principal and we wish her every success as she takes this next step in her leadership journey.
CCTV
Over the last school holidays CCTV security cameras were added to our school grounds. Please be aware that the cameras are to help protect our school outside school hours.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT
It’s been a fortnight of activity at Yeronga State School as we were involved in ‘Clean Up our School Day’, Free Dress Day, 800m and 1500m running finals, Discus Day, Chappy’s Subway Lunch, P&C Meetings, Harmony Day and of course the launch of Active School Travel. We look forward to rounding off a productive term as we continue to focus on ‘learning, caring, growing and achieving’ here at YSS.
Harmony Day
Each year Yeronga State School celebrates the diversity of our school population through Harmony Day. This year’s celebrations were particularly outstanding, with two memorable assemblies being held to mark the occasion. It was awe-inspiring to see the high level of community involvement in this event, which recognised and highlighted the importance of cultural diversity in our school. The aim of the day was to promote inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone at our school. We thank our School Chaplain, Jennifer Bennett, for her tireless efforts in putting together this unforgettable occasion for our students and their families.
New Prep Classroom
There was much excitement last Saturday as the new Prep classroom was delivered to our school. It was an impressive operation to watch, as it involved the classroom being lifted up by crane, in four separate sections, up and over the trees in our Junior School. The complex procedure required the use of a 350 tonne crane (with a reach of 52 metres), 3 crane crew, 4 installation crew and 4 traffic control pilots. We look forward to the new classroom being available for the students in Prep 5!

Active School Travel - Let’s get active!
It was lovely to see so many students and parents travel to school for the launch of Active School Travel. We had 188 entries into the scooter and helmet draw – thank you to Nicole Johnstone for providing this.
The draw will be done Wednesday of Week 10 at 8:30am, at the stage area outside of the tuckshop.
Every Wednesday will now be the Active School Travel day, the stamping stations will be open from 8:15am to 8:45am. Once a term, we will have a special event that may fall on a different day – this will be advertised.
A huge thank you to all the support staff and parents who made the launch possible – without this support the morning would not have been so successful.
Behaviour Celebrations
Next week those children who have achieved an A, B or C rating for the term in regards to their behaviour standards will participate in the term’s behaviour celebrations. This will be a time for students across the year levels to be recognized for consistently meeting the Yeronga State School expectations of doing your best, being responsible, being respectful and being safe. Children who are not participating in the celebrations will be provided with alternative supervision. Class teachers will confirm beforehand if your child is not participating.
Lost Property
As we near the end of Term One, it would be timely to remind your child to have a look in the Lost Property for any items they have misplaced. Junior Lost Property is located underneath the Year One building and Senior Lost Property is located under the stairs in the Administration block.
ANZAC Day Commemoration
The annual Yeronga State School Anzac Day ceremony is rapidly approaching. Please note that the ANZAC Ceremony will be held during Week One of Term Two at 9am on Wednesday 24 April. We invite family and friends of Yeronga State School to join us for this annual event, which holds great significance for us all.
The students of Yeronga State School have been invited by the members of the Stephens Sub-Branch RSL to join the annual Anzac Day March and Memorial Service, being held on Thursday 25 April (public holiday). The Parade will step off at 7.00am from outside Yeronga State School and will travel along Park Road, turn right through the Yeronga Memorial Park gates into Honour Avenue and proceed to the Cenotaph (N.B. This is a new route for the Parade). The Memorial Service will commence at 7.30am. We hope that a large number of students and parents can join us to mark this important occasion in our local community.

We loved seeing the Aboriginal flag being held by Nevaeh Healy from Grade 1.
(Pictured here) while the student leaders said the acknowledgement at the Harmony Day assemblies last Thursday. Nevaeh is Durambal from Rockhampton. A mural of her Garmy (meaning 'grandmother' in Darumbal - she is Nevaeh's great grandmother), Aunty Ollie, was painted on the side of Central Queensland University in Rockhampton University. Aunty Ollie is an elder from the Rockhampton area and you can read about her here:
https://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/news/cqus-stunning-mural-to-recognise-darumbal-heritage/3226583/
We were also proud to see the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags leading the flag procession to acknowledge the first nation people of Australia.

P & C REPORT
Thank you!
The first term of 2019 has been a busy one with welcome activities for new families, a Bunnings sausage sizzle, Cross Country snow cone stall, Easter raffle, and lots of activity preparing for the school fete on Saturday, 25 May. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered and supported these P&C activities and others throughout the term and also to everyone who volunteers in countless other ways including through the tuckshop, uniform shop and as Parent Representatives for their children's classes. We can't thank you enough for your help and contribution to our school community.
Easter Raffle Wrapping
The countdown is on to the Easter raffle prize draw in week 10. Please note that the draw will definitely occur in week 10, but not on 1 April as previously advised. There is always a great deal of excitement when prizes are distributed to classrooms across the school!
Please ensure you return all raffle funds and tickets (sold and unsold) to the P&C payment boxes, or to YOSHC, by this Friday, 29 March, to ensure they go into the draw. Raffle prize donations are also welcome until the end of this week - children can take their prize donations to their classroom for collection.
Our raffle coordinators, Sarah and Kristen, will appreciate help with making up the Easter basket prizes. It is likely this will happen on Friday, 29 March, in the Resource Centre but the day and time are still to be confirmed. If you would like to come along and join in with the Easter fun to wrap prizes please email yerongasspandc@gmail.com and we will be in touch when the timing has been confirmed.
Thanks so much for your support and good luck in the draw!

CYBER SAFETY
Cyber Safety is an important feature of our lives these days and it affects students and adults alike. So what do we do about it as a school? Teachers cover issues such as anti-bullying daily. The BYOD classes run sessions on what is appropriate use of an iPad and what is not. This includes being cyber safe, not taking a photo of someone without their permission. Not airdropping photos without permission from the teacher or the other student’s iPads.
Faith Hage and Debbie Cowie run Cyber Safety lessons during library lessons, for all classes during the year. Examples of what is being taught are: how to protect your personal information, including not allowing apps to use your location. Stranger danger messages such as not going on to chats, and talking to people who you have not met face to face.
We will be bringing experts in from the Information and Technologies Branch Department of Education on the 3rd September for years 4 – 6 during the day and an evening session for parents. This session will be open to all parents even those whose students do not come to our school. Please diarise this date and bring a friend.
Premier’s Coding Challenge
All students from years 3 – 6 are invited to join the Premier’s Coding challenge.
To take part in the challenge, you must code an interactive and innovative digital solution to raise awareness of cybersafety, and help Queenslanders by providing tips to improve their cybersafety. It could be an app, a game, an animation or a website. Your prototype should be visually appealing and informative. Create your own images, or download and provide credit for appropriate images to use in your digital solution. Mrs Cowie is here to help you. Join the Tech Club during first break on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

GREEN TEAM
Green Team News
Clean up your school day
Thank you to the entire school community who banded together on Thursday 14th March to make our school look spick and span. An incredible 29.51kg of rubbish was collected, 8 kgs more than last year!
The day was made all the more fun with hundreds of litter pickers and rubbish bags from Paul at the Brisbane City Council. Who knew picking up rubbish could be so much fun?
The Green Team painstakingly sorted through each and every piece of rubbish to find out what kind of rubbish is littering our school. Not only did we manage to analyse some of our biggest litter problems, but we even managed to make a few dollars for the school through the Container Deposit Scheme! Watch this space for the Container Deposit Scheme to start making our school some money very soon!
One of our biggest litter problems we discovered on the day was plastic straws. The Green Team soon got to work, making a proposal to the P&C to replace them with paper straws. The P&C wholeheartedly agreed, so look out for paper straws to start appearing in the tuckshop soon!
Thanks again for helping to keep our school clean and green!

MUSIC
What’s been happening in music lately?
YEAR 6
Recently, year 6 students have been busily preparing their final performances for their ‘Rhythmic Riot’ unit. This has involved students working collaboratively in groups of 3 or 4 to choose, rehearse and perform 2 contrasting songs from different cultures that they have learnt in class time. Students need to demonstrate that they can sing these songs in tune and perform a melodic/rhythmic accompaniment at the same time. Popular song choices have included ‘Tideo’, ‘Shake the Papaya’ (a calypso song from South America), ‘Banuwa’ (a Liberian folk song) and ‘Liza Jane’ (an African-American folk song).
BAND, STRINGS AND CHOIR
Our ensembles have been busily preparing for upcoming performances such as the fete and ANZAC Day. Therefore, it would be greatly appreciated if all students could arrive to rehearsals on time and readily prepared. We have had a few incidents lately with students arriving to before school rehearsals 10-20 minutes late which disrupts the flow of the rehearsal. If you need a reminder, here are the before school rehearsal times for our ensembles:
MONDAY |
Senior String Ensemble “Brandenburg Strings” |
7:30am arrival to be tuned and ready for a 7:45am start. Rehearsal concludes at 8:30am. |
TUESDAY |
Years 4 – 6 Senior Choir “Stella Voce” |
Arrive at 7:45am to warm up. Rehearsal concludes at 8:30am. |
WEDNESDAY |
Junior String Ensemble “Stradivari Strings” |
7:45am arrival to be tuned and ready for an 8:00am start. Rehearsal concludes at 8:30am |
THURSDAY |
Senior Band |
7:35am arrival for a 7:45am start. Rehearsal concludes at 8:30am. |
FRIDAY |
Years 2 – 3 Junior Choir “Cosmio Singers” |
Arrive at 7:45am to warm up. Rehearsal concludes at 8:30am. |
CHORAL SINGFEST
If your child was one of the Stella Voce students who returned a positive expression of interest form to attend Singfest this year, I can now confirm that we will be attending on Tuesday, August 27 at the Old Museum Building in Bowen Hills. A note will be coming home soon with all of the details about this day but in the meantime, please lock this date down in your diaries.
As previously mentioned on the initial expression of interest form, no transportation will be organised for this event so students will need to be dropped off at the venue by 9:30am and picked up at the end of the concert at 6:00pm. Also, the cost for this event is $15 per student and you will be invoiced for this in the near future. In the meantime, if you have any further queries, please don’t hesitate to contact me at leeas0@eq.edu.au.
CONGRATULATIONS
A huge congratulations to past student and 2018 Choir Captain, Hannah Campbell for being offered a place to participate in the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University State Honours Ensemble Program for Vocals in the South-East Queensland Region. Hannah was an incredibly active member of the Yeronga State School music program and she should be proud of her accomplishments.
Yours in Music,
Lauren Easey
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Thank you
To all of our marvellous admin staff, teachers, teacher aids, groundsmen, cleaners, parents and children thank you for understanding the difficult nature of this most crowded of terms. Athletics Carnival
Yeronga State School Senior (Years 3-6) Athletics Carnival Day 26 April (changed from 28 March)
The Yeronga State School Senior (Years 3 to 6) Athletics Carnival has been postponed to 26th April because of bad weather.
As with all of these events we would like to extend an invitation to all parents to attend this carnival. Additionally we would very much appreciate some help in officiating on the day. Last year we had a very healthy contingent of parents assisting which made the carnival a very smooth operation. If you can spare some time it would be most appreciated.
Timetable for the Athletics Carnival
The day will commence at approximately 8:45 with the march past. At 9am the boys field rotations will commence in the following order. Each rotation will take 30 minutes and these rotations will therefore conclude at 11am. While the boys are completing these the girls will be completing the heats and finals of their sprints and 200m events.

Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 need to possess the advantages of size and speed, as well as skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks’ notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

CHAPPY’S-CHAT
Harmony Day…
Harmony Day each year gives us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our differences and how together we make this school a very special place where “everyone belongs”. We’ve realised that all our different beginnings, families, cultural differences, and unique talents come together to make our community very special. This year’s Harmony Day was very timely given recent events in Christchurch with the sadness that such shocking news brings. It is so important that as a community we continue to be proactive and deliberate in making everyone feel welcome.
Wouldn’t it also be great if we take this message to our larger community, and to our city, and our nation? In a little over a week, on Sunday March 31, it is Neighbour Day, reminding us to connect with people around us. This year’s theme is “Loneliness: what neighbours can to do create connections”. Just saying hello, as sung by our Preppies, is a great starting point. Let’s take our message of harmony beyond the school gate, and show kindness to a world that needs love.

School Fete…
I am planning to make a giant igloo out of 2 litre milk bottles to be a centrepiece to Chappy’s Polar Expedition for the school fete. So I’d appreciate donations of clean and dry 2l milk bottles after the Easter holidays. It’s going to be a fun project to make and watch as it gets built leading up to the fete.

Harmony Day Food Drive
Yeronga SHS year 10 Social Network Leaders are organising a food drive in support of the students in QLD schools that are seeking asylum.
These students and their families have no financial support from the government, are not allowed to work and are relying on charitable donations.
To help out we have a drop off box at the office reception area for all to contribute non-perishable food items if they are able to. We thank you for your kind assistance in donating, these items will be collected on Thursday 4th April.
