PRINCIPAL REPORT

Welcome to 2019

If the beginning of the school year is any indication, 2019 is going to be an outstanding one. Calm, positive, enthusiastic and productive classrooms are operating. Children and parents are busy familiarising themselves with new school routines and everyone appears to be ready for the cognitive challenges heading their way. Thank you to all the parents and staff who support our children by setting them up for success.

The commitment and passion of Yeronga State School teachers cannot be underestimated. After engaging in three days of intense and challenging professional learning late last week, many returned to school over the weekend to organise learning environments. I know your children will benefit from their efforts and I thank them all for their diligence.

2019 School Priorities

Yeronga State School is due for a strategic review in 2020 as our 2017 -2020 Strategic Plan draws to a close. This plan has three key pillars underpinning it:

  • Curious Learners
  • Connected Individuals
  • Community Minded citizens

There are two main school improvement priorities this year are:

  1. Creating Curious, Risk taking Writers
  2. Deepening an Inquiry Stance
  • Prep, 5&6- Multi- Disciplinary Inquiry Units
  • 1-4 Maths – HASS & Science Inquiry Units
  • CPL T of A -Framing Higher Order Questions (SOLO)

Maintaining an inclusive, positive school community is always a priority for the school. I will share more about these priorities and some of the signature programs we have developed as the school year progresses.

As parents you play an essential role in the education of your child. I hope you have been able to meet and begin building a strong partnership with your child’s teacher. Strong parent school partnerships has a significant impact on a child’s academic and social emotional wellbeing. I always say our school community is as strong as your contribution. Many of us work full time however we can still reach out and connect. One of the simplest is to smile and greet one another as you enter or exit the school. Being noticed and acknowledged is so important and helps our children feel they are part of a large network of people cheering them on.

DAY 8 Enrolments

Public schools are staffed on Day 8 numbers. We do our best to accurately predict enrolment numbers before setting our class structures for the year. This is always dependent on receiving accurate information about who is leaving and trying to guess who in will enrol. From time to time it is necessary to restructure some year levels if Day 8 numbers are different to what we were expecting. Day 8 will be next Thursday. We do not envisage any class changes at this stage however if this is necessary we will do so next Friday ready for Week 3. Parents will be informed prior to making any changes.

PREP 5 NEW BUILDING

A new Prep building has been approved by the department. We are currently waiting on heritage approval to trim some trees so we can put the building in place. I believe that this will take place shortly and we will have our new building before the end of Term 1. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT

We’re back and it’s all systems go here at Yeronga State School. The focus for the start of the 2019 school year for us has been on ‘priming positivity’, creating connections and seeing strengths. It’s been an exciting week as we have supported our students, parents and staff to make the transition in to the new school year.

Last week we spent time on the Student Free Days focussing ourselves on the priorities for our students and on developing the structures around our professional learning teams. It is certainly motivating to be a part of a team that is so dedicated and committed to delivering a challenging and relevant curriculum, through the provision of quality teaching and engaging learning environments.

Assembly

Assemblies have started for the year. These are a wonderful opportunity for parents and the school community to come together and hear about the happenings in our school.

This year we will continue to operate our weekly assembly as two groups:

Juniors (Prep – Year 2) – Thursday 1.45pm (even weeks)
Seniors (Year 3 – Year 6) – Thursday 1.45pm (odd weeks)

We look forward to seeing you there.

Parent Information Evenings

During Week 4 and 5 we will be holding parent information sessions to provide an opportunity for parents to find out year level specific information for the year ahead. Details are as follows:

  • Junior School (Prep- Year 2) 6pm on Wednesday 13 February
  • Senior School (Yr 3-6) 6pm on Wednesday 20 February

Parent Information Evenings are a perfect opportunity to build relationships with their child’s teacher and hear information about the year ahead. Topics to be discussed include school priorities, Curiosity and Powerful Learning, communication between parents and teachers, home learning, year level curriculum, BYOD (Year 2 & 3), leadership opportunities (Year 5 and 6), camps and excursion information, assessment, reporting and NAPLAN information (Year 3 and 5).

Before and After School Arrangements

All students who are not attending Yeronga Outside School Hours Care (YOSHC) should aim to arrive after 8:30am. If students arrive between 8:15am – 8:30am they need to sit under C Block to read or talk quietly. No students should be in the school grounds before 8:15am. Parents who need to drop students at school before 8:15am need to enrol in YOSHC. It is a great safety concern to have children who are unsupervised in the school grounds. YOSHC is open every morning from 7am.

After school all students need to be collected by parents/carers at 3pm. Students remaining at school after 3pm must be with a teacher (e.g. sports training), their parent or attending YOSHC.

Parents who are later than 3:15pm collecting their children, will need to collect them from the school office. Please note that the school office closes at 3:30pm. All student and parents who are not part of the YOSHC program need to have left the school grounds no later than 4pm.

We understand that family life often involves unexpected changes to routines. We appreciate the efforts our families make to manage their schedule to work within these times and thank you for your understanding around this very important safety matter.

Help keep our children safe

For your child’s safety please ensure that students only enter the school grounds via the pedestrian gates (not the through any of the car parks). Cars are not to park in the school grounds. Street parking is available for parents. We also have a 2 minute – Stop, Kiss and Go area on Park Road.

The safety of our students is our priority, as these spaces have continual vehicle movement it is imperative that no student, even with and adult, walk through these areas. We thank you for your assistance in keeping our school a safe place to learn, grow and have fun.

Welcome to Prep

It was lovely to see so many excited families beginning their learning journey at Yeronga. The children all enjoyed their first day and their teachers and teacher aides created a warm and welcoming environment for our children of their first day of primary school.

Welcome to PREP 2019

Active School Travel

The Active School Travel (AST) program offers Brisbane primary schools a suite of free resources, tools and incentives to enable students, parents, carers and teachers to leave the car at home and actively travel to school. It’s all about creating healthier, more active students and families, increasing road safety awareness, safer streets and continuing to tackle traffic congestion.

Yeronga State School has now signed up for the award-winning three-year program that promotes road safety and sustainable and healthy travel options such as walking, cycling, scootering, carpooling and public transport.

We are calling for parent representatives that would like to help plan special events that get our community inspired to actively travel to school. If you would like to be an Active School Travel Committee member please email tfree19@eq.edu.au by the end of Week 2, so that we can start our planning for the active year ahead.

Upcoming Events

We would love to see you at our upcoming events at the start of this term.

They include:

  • Prep Welcome BBQ: Saturday 2 February 9-11am
  • Parent Rep Information Night: Tuesday 12 February 7-8pm

P & C REPORT

On behalf of the Yeronga State School Parents and Citizens Association (P&C), I’d like to extend a big welcome to all new and returning families. We encourage you to get involved in the school community. To help you do this we have created the Yeronga SS P&C Facebook page. This helps to stay on top of all P&C and key school events throughout the year. Please 'like' us so we can keep you as up to date as possible with key activities for your kids and you.

The end of last year and start of this year have been busy with a number of activities.

Prep Welcome Picnic

The prep welcome picnic is on Saturday from 9-11am in the prep playground area. This is a great morning and wonderful way to meet other 2019 prep families in the Yeronga community. There will be plenty of sausages, snow cones and popcorn for all so please consider popping in with your preppie! Remember to BYO chairs, rugs and drinks.

YOSHC

One of our directors, Jordan Young moved on to pastures new at the end of last year. Jordan had been at YOSHC for a number of years and will be sorely missed by kids and staff alike. Jordan was instrumental in helping to streamline many of the YOSHC business systems to ensure YOSHC remains viable for many years to come. We would like to thank Jordan for his dedication to making YOSHC a wonderful place for our kids and wish him all the very best for his future teaching career.

Charlee Carey has been appointed as our new YOSHC director. Charlee had previously worked as an educator and coordinator at YOSHC so has a great understanding of the culture at Yeronga and brings great enthusiasm and leadership to the position.

Air Conditioning

One of the big projects at YSS over the last few years has been implementation of our cool schools review (YSS Cool School Review facebook page.) We have insulated all buildings, have a tree planting plan for this year and have started installing air conditioning. Due to our heritage listing this is an expensive exercise. In 2018 we installed air conditioning in prep and the new music building. Over the school holidays we installed air conditioning in 3 of the 4 grade 6 classrooms and have plans to install more in a number of other buildings throughout 2019.

RSL Raffle

At the end of last year the Yeronga RSL ran a Christmas family day and raffle with funds raised to support YSS students who may be struggling with back to school costs. They donated a total of $860 to the school community. Many thanks to the RSL and all that supported the event.

Extracurricular activities

The P&C and School provide the opportunities for a number of extracurricular activities before and after school including piano, guitar lessons, chess and tennis. Our extracurricular program is constantly changing and new classes may be added as the year progresses. Please see the attached flyer for current times and contact details. If there is an extracurricular activity you think we should consider please feel free to contact the P&C.

Tuck shop News

Welcome to 2019. We hope everyone had an enjoyable break and is looking forward to another big year. The tuckshop will continue to be open on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday beginning week 2 for Year 1 to Year 6.

Prep students will be able to order from week 3. Please note no frozen items in Term 1 for Preps.

Students in Year 2 and above can bring a small amount of money to school to purchase snacks, drinks and frozen items over the counter during first and second break. No notes larger than a $10 are permitted at school.

Flexischools is the preferred ordering method, however we will accept bag orders over the counter before 845am - cash only. Sushi can only be ordered on Flexischools and must be ordered by 1pm the day before.

We would love to see some new faces helping us out at the tuckshop. If you can spare 2 hours once a month please let us know. No experience required and it is a great way to meet other parents.

Any questions please contact us on yerongasstuckshop@gmail.com

Parent Reps

Teachers are now looking for 2 Parent Reps for each class. Parent Rep’s welcome new families to the school and pass on weekly emails to the class about what is going on in the school. If you are interested in being a Parent Rep, please make contact with your child’s teacher.

P&C AGM: Tuesday, 19 February 2018

The P&C Executive team overseas P&C activities throughout the school year. Executive positions include President, Vice President (usually 2 or 3 people hold this position), Treasurer and Minutes Secretary. There is also potential for a number of non executive positions including correspondence secretary and events coordinators.

P&C meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month (except December and January) at 7:00pm in the school Resource Centre (library).

At the 2019 AGM on Tuesday, 19 February, several P&C Executive team members will be stepping down from the committee to make way for new parent representatives. Two current Executive team members are happy to continue (if members would like them to) and they're really friendly! However, we are looking for a new P&C treasurer and minutes secretary in particular. Please let us know if you would like to join the team - we'd love to hear from you. In accordance with the P&Cs QLD Constitution, all nominations for executive positions should be received in writing prior to the AGM, via the P&C Executive Officer Nomination Form.

The 2019 AGM will be followed by our first general meeting of the year.

Please contact us if you are interested in taking on a more active role in the P&C but would like more information around roles and responsibilities, at yerongasspandc@gmail.com.

2019 P&C Membership

All 2018 memberships will lapse at the AGM. We've made it easy for you to join the P&C or renew your membership via our online 2019 Membership form (ideally before 19 February).

It only takes a minute (or less) to complete - just completing the form to become a member helps and there is no obligation to attend meetings (although we'd love to see you if you're able). Membership numbers help us with grant applications and allows us to keep you updated with copies of monthly minutes.

Just One Thing

The P&C is committed to supporting our school and kids. We are keen to ensure every family has the opportunity to get involved and experience our active and friendly community. One of the things that makes Yeronga State School such a great place is our active and friendly school community. Our school is as strong as everyone’s contribution and the Yeronga SS P&C aims to provide a range of opportunities for you to enjoy connecting with your school community.

There are many different ways you can help to make our school great, big and small. We invite every Yeronga SS family to nominate to do ‘Just One Thing’ during the school year to assist the P&C to make a big contribution to our kids and school, via our Just One Thing survey. It only takes a couple of minutes to click on your 'One Thing' add your contact details and press 'Done' - easy!

  • view attendance details, report cards, invoices and a history of payments
  • provide reasons for unexplained absences and to notify the school of future absences
  • view and pay school invoices online
  • update student details including residential and
  • postal address as well as medical conditions

  • If you are collecting our child early and not returning to school you will need to get an “Early Departure Slip” from the office.
  • If you are taking your child to an appointment/event during the school day and they are returning the same day you will need to sign the “Absence Register” at the office.

AROUND THE SCHOOL

School Carparks

Safety of our students is always a top priority for the school.

Stop Kiss and Go is at the front of the school. This is a 2 minute zone and parents must stay with their vehicle. Be sure to move to the front of the zone before dropping off or picking up to allow the zone to be used efficiently

Yeronga Park Swimming Carpark – has a pick up zone at the back near the school gate; and

Parking is available on Honour Av, School Rd, Park Rd and surrounding streets – checking the council signs.

We ask for your help ensuring that all our students get to school and home again safely.

Schoolzine App

Thank you to all families who have downloaded the schoolzine app onto their phone and have been using it well. The SZapp is an app Yeronga State School uses to communicate with all our families at the school.

We wanted to remind all the parents that already have SZapp that the will need to adjust their subscription information. Each student will have moved up into the next year level, we encourage everyone to double check that they have subscribed to the correct year level for their family.

To adjust your subscription please see below.

If you are new to the school we encourage you to download this app as soon as possible. For directions on how to set the app up please click on the links below.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Welcome back everybody. I hope the Summer Holidays were as exciting or as restful as you needed them to be.

Cross Country Training

Cross Country Training will begin next week with the climax being the School Cross Country on 18 February. Sessions will be on Mondays from 7:45 to 8:15 and Tuesdays from 3:15 to 3:45 with Mr Bateman and Fridays 7:45 to 8:15 with Mr Sutherland. These sessions are run free of charge.

Gala Days

Gala Days are well and truly on the horizon. Options include Boys and Girls Football (What used to be called Soccer), Rugby League and Girls Softball and Teeball. The dates for these very important days are, weather permitting, 8 March, 22 March and 31 May. The sports offered will include Boys and Girls Football (Soccer), Girls’ Softball and Rugby League. Children need to start thinking seriously about which of these sports they would like to participate in as there will be a muster to canvas interest for the various sports.

Swimming

Swimming will begin in week 4 and finish in week 8 (a total of five weeks). However it will only be offered to year 1 and 2 students due to Athletics Commitments for years 3 to 6. Students will need goggles, a rashie, togs, towel, sturdy bag, spare underwear & Flip Flops (thongs). These sessions provide high quality swimming instruction across the school. We will be implementing these lessons, in conjunction with the staff of Yeronga Park Pool. This means the instructors will take the lessons for all children from Year 1 to 2 to enhance those children’s’ competence in Aquatics. Not only are these children being given expert stroke correction in small ability specific groups, but also water safety knowledge and skills. These lessons will cost $7.50 per lesson.

Thanks again to Yeronga Park Pool for its continued support. They not only discount our lessons, but also give us our carnivals and various play days free of charge.

The District Swimming Team

Our team for Districts has been finalised the Sunnybank District Swimming Trial to be held on 8 February. Congratulations to:, Will G, Charlie V, Joshua S, Clayton R, Cameron W, Liam C, George H, Hamish D, Hayden C, Rupert H, Eadie B, Georgie B, Savannah O, Sophia S, Georgia M, Isabella M, Matilda S, Alex S, Hayley R, Milly B, Ellyana A, Ines C and Catherine K.

Athletics Carnival

The Yeronga State School Athletics Carnival has been brought forward one term from our usual June date to 25 March. Again this date is a direct impact of National Athletics being held in Darwin.

As with all of these events we would like to extend an invitation to all parents to attend this carnival. Additionally we would very much appreciate some help in officiating on the day. Last year we had a very healthy contingent of parents assisting which made the carnival a very smooth operation. If you can spare some time it would be most appreciated.

Athletics Selection Trials (Years 3 o 6)

These will commence next Friday and the following schedule informs students and parents what will be happening in each of the following weeks. These trials are held to select the finalists and relay teams from each House for our Senior Athletics Carnival.

Senior Cross Country Day 18 February (Reserve Day: 1 March)

This year the date for our cross country has been brought forward due to the impact of National Athletics being held in Darwin. As we have had to move our cross country date into February we have had to add extra safeguards for the impacts of heat.

As well as having drinking water on course we have included a reserve day. This date is noted above. If we deem the heat predicted on the set date to make it unsafe for our students to run then we will move the cross country to our reserve day. Unfortunately we will not be able to make a decision until we are very close to the set date due to the fickleness of the weather. If our reserve day proves to be unsuitable then we will look at a selection trial involving only those wishing to attend the District Cross Country with our School Cross being delayed until the weather becomes more Autumnal.

All children will be expected, unless medically unable, to participate in the Cross Country. The children who are 8 years old will run a smaller course inside the school grounds. The children who age from 9 to 12 years will be given the option of running a long course (outside the school grounds) or a short course (within the school grounds). Those who opt for the short course will be identified by a fluorescent vest they must wear. The difference between the course options is that the long course option allows children to qualify for the Yeronga State School team for the Eastern Taipans District Cross Country and compete to be Age Champion.

Please remember that the team for the Eastern Taipans District Cross Country will not be settled for a week or more after the Yeronga State School Cross Country as we may have a number of children absent on the day and our policy is to allow those either absent due to illness or higher representative honours the opportunity to challenge for a place in teams at a later date.

Absence From Cross Country

If you know that you will be absent from the Cross Country day and are keen to have a time recorded please see Mr Bateman so that this may be done before the 19th of March. If you are ill on the day you will need to collect a form from Mr Bateman to have a time recorded after the event to be considered for District Selection. We will be using the times of the top 8 in the 10, 11 and 12 year events for comparisons

Cross Country Day Helpers

If you would like to volunteer time to help either as a check point attendant or a finish line official your help would be most appreciated. It is always great to have extra pairs of eyes and ears available. We have been blessed, for many years, with wonderful volunteers like Ruth Bennett. Thank you Ruth for so many great years of selfless service.

Yeronga State School (YSS) District Trial Selection Policy Special Consideration (Years 3 to 6)

The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 possess the advantages of size and speed, if not skill on most occasions. Selectors are choosing those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to compete at a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.

In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

CHAPPY’S-CHAT

Hello and welcome to school for 2019…

If we haven’t met, I’m your School Chaplain, and I love being a part of this great school community. I’m here to provide pastoral care to students, families, and staff. This happens through social and emotional support, community development, mentoring and role-modelling, educational support, spiritual support, and some special extra-curricular activities.

It was great meeting some of the new families to our school at the morning tea on our first day. If you missed that opportunity to meet me or find out more about Chaplaincy, please feel free to come in for a coffee and chat. I can be contacted through the school office or by email.

Dreams for 2019…

Over the holidays, I enjoyed going to the LifeLine Bookfest, and finding a new pile of books to work my way through. The holidays also gave me time to think about the year ahead, to stop and dream, and consider how I will turn those dreams into some goals and hopefully then reality.

Working towards some life goals helps increase our feelings of wellbeing and success, and look to the future more positively. But it can be quite a challenge when you have young ones to care for, or there is illness or other struggles that weigh you down. A goal could be as basic as getting the children to school on time each day, making healthier choices for food, or much more complex with work targets or study commitments. Wherever you are at, let me know if I can cheer you on towards your dreams this year. I look forward to engaging with you and supporting your family this year.
