All students who nominated for a position should be commended as they all did a great job and Yeronga should be very proud of the students in the 2019 year six cohort.
End of Year
We have cheered and sweltered at the swimming carnivals, been entertained by our bands and choirs and have acknowledged the academic achievements in our lower school but we still have more events to come.
Next Monday I am looking forward to being part of the Year Six Graduation as our students celebrate the end of their primary education.
Sporting and academic awards for our senior classes will be presented next week at assemblies on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. Behaviour celebrations will take place next Wednesday along with class break-up parties.
Report cards will be emailed home to parents on Wednesday afternoon. Classes for 2019 are still being finalised and class teachers will be emailed to parents before the start of the 2019 school year.
Thankyou
As I write my last newsletter article for Yeronga I would like to take the opportunity to thank each and everyone in this wonderful community for being so welcoming and making me feel very much at home in my time here. There is much to celebrate and be proud of at Yeronga State School and I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend some time here to learn and grow. It has been great to have Deb Spanner back in the school this term and I know that she has been doing lots of work with the leadership team to ensure 2019 will be an amazing year for the school. I look forward to hearing about the ongoing successes at Yeronga State School.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT
It’s hard to believe that there are only two weeks left of the 2018 school year. We look forward to sharing the excitement of the many end of school year events with our students and their families. A sincere thank you from both of us to the entire school community for making us feel so welcome in our first year as Deputy Principals at this amazing school. We have certainly felt embraced by the warmth of this highly supportive school community.
Parent Rep Thank you
We would like to acknowledge and thank the wonderful group of parents who have acted as Parent Reps for their child’s class throughout 2018. These wonderful people have been so generous with their time and provided support to both the class teachers and the parents of the students in the classes they represent. This is a great demonstration of the supportive community that we have here at YSS! A big shout out also to Jodie Swan, for her tireless efforts as the Parent Rep Coordinator. She has done a fabulous job of keeping the communication lines open and keeping tabs on everything that happens in our busy school.
Behaviour Celebrations
During Week 10 those children who have achieved an A, B or C rating for the term in regards to their behaviour standards will participate in the term’s behavior celebrations. This will be a time for student across the year levels to be recognised for consistently meeting the Yeronga State School expectations of doing your best, being responsible, being respectful and being safe. Children who are not participating in the celebrations will be provided with alternative supervision. Class teachers will confirm beforehand if your child is not participating.
Students in Year 3-6 will be taking place in ‘Fun Mudda’ on Wednesday 12 December as their end of year Behaviour Celebration. This is a much anticipated event! Please note the following information.
Students need to:
- come to school in uniform
- bring a spare set of clothes and old shoes (these will get dirty!)
- be hosed down following ‘Fun Mudda’ and change back in to their clean uniform and shoes prior to going back to their classroom
- be wearing sunscreen
Lost Property
As we near the end of term, it would be timely to remind your child to have a look in the Lost Property for any items they have misplaced. Junior Lost Property is located underneath the Year One building (in the middle) and Senior Lost Property is located under the stairs in the Administration block.
2018 Student Council
Mrs Paynter and Ms Masselos thank the members of the 2018 Student Council for their hard work and dedication in representing the students of Yeronga State School throughout the year.

Please let me, or any of the others on the Executive know if you'd like some more info on any position.
Yeronga RSL Christmas Fundraiser
This year Yeronga RSL will be having a Christmas party fundraiser to support the school community. Money raised will go towards start up costs or back to school costs for those in the school who are struggling. The Christmas party is a fabulous family event with free face painting, balloons, Santa visit and raffles. Please think of popping in to support this event on Sunday 16 December from 10am, just give Sam a call so they can ensure they have enough face painting elves available! If you can't attend on the day, raffle tickets can be purchased at the RSL reception with a chance to win a wheelbarrow full of amazing Christmas goodies.
Extracurricular Piano Tuition
In 2019 we are pleased to announce we will once again be offering extracurricular piano tuition. If you are interested in this, please contact Cara on financeysspc@live.com.au for more details. Here's a short bio about Nicole:
My name is Nicole Oziganow and I will be teaching piano lessons after school on Mondays and Thursdays at YSS next year.
I first started learning how to play the piano after school at Yeronga State School when I was in Year 2, so to be teaching here in 2019 is a full circle for me. I began teaching piano and music theory whilst I was in high school 12 years ago. I have now finished my education degree and am a relief music teacher at a number of schools, including Yeronga. I make piano lessons fun and engaging and have successfully entered 50+ students in multiple AMEB piano, piano for leisure and theory of music exams.
I am looking forward to teaching students at Yeronga next year.
The P&C would like to wish everyone in the school community a Merry Christmas and a peaceful and safe New Year.

MUSIC
MUSIC NEWS
What an exciting 2018 we have had in the Music Department. To recap, in March we had a group of Year 4 Instrumental Music students attend the Southside Beginners Music Camp to intensively develop their music reading and playing skills. Also in March, both Stella Voce and the Cosmio Singers performed for the first time in 2018 at our Harmony Day celebrations. In April, our Senior Band joined with the Yeronga State High School band to perform at our local ANZAC Day ceremony. In May, we heard the Brandenburg Strings entertain us at our school assembly, In June, we heard the Stradivari Strings entertain us at our school assembly and we had some of our Junior Strings attend the Junior Strings Music Camp. Also in June, all of our ensembles combined to perform at the annual Music Showcase. In August, Stella Voce and the Cosmio Singers performed at our school assemblies. In September, a selected number of our Instrumental Music students attended the Advanced Music Camp to further extend their playing skills. Our Senior Choir, Stella Voce, also performed for Brisbane over the airwaves during the 96.5FM School Excursion. In October, both the Brandenburg and the Stradivari String Ensembles achieved Gold Awards at the Prestige Music Fest Competition. Finally, in November we held our annual Big Sing and Big Play ceremonies where all eight of our music ensembles performed and selected students took home awards for their dedication to the Music Program at Yeronga State School. Our major award winners for Music in 2018 were:
Chorister of the Year – Hannah C
Strings Player of the Year – Huong M
Band Player of the Year – Leila T
Thanks to all of the students and parents/guardians who assisted and supported our musicians through all of these events.
As we move closer to 2019, Mr Grodecki, Mrs Rosewarne, Mrs Eastgate and myself would like to congratulate our current Year 6 students and to wish them good luck as they move on to high school. Remember to always keep making room in your lives for playing, listening and making music. You will never regret it.
Welcome also to our new Instrumental Music recruits. Just like you, we are excited to begin lessons again in 2019! Until then, have a Merry Christmas and be safe over the summer holidays.
Yours in music,
Lauren Easey
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Congratulations on a great year Margaret G
We had an eyewitness, in Margaret’s mother, on hand to retell Maraget’s experiences at nationals.
‘During mid-November Margaret was in Melbourne representing Queensland at the School Sport Australia Track & Field Championships. Margaret’s event was the 12yr old girls 800m.
On Sunday 18th, Margaret was in the second heat and finished third. That meant she automatically qualified for the final on the following day. After an early wake up, a little bit of breakfast and a nervous tram ride out to the track it was nearly time for the race to start.
Starting in Lane 5, Margaret took the race out hard and lead in the early stages. She ran a fantastic tactical race and just missed out on a podium finish. Margaret came 4th and equalled her PB of 2:21.31
Congratulations Margaret. An amazing effort representing Queensland. Good luck next year when you move up to the 13-19 yr old Championships.’ We will miss you at Yeronga State School Margaret. All the best at your new school and do drop in with news of your latest endeavours.
Congratulations Again to Harvey P
As I have stated in the previous issue it is rare for us to have two Queensland representatives in the one year. We had that privilege this year as Harvey also represented Queensland in Golf. An idea of just how special his abilities are can be gained by viewing the photo of Harvey in full flight. We, at Yeronga, shall miss Harvey also, but would like to wish him all the best for a very bright future and issue an invitation to return or keep in touch with news of his latest exploits.
Swimming has nearly concluded
Please remember that, this year, swimming concludes in week 9 (this week). We will go to swimming lessons in week 9, but not in week 10. During Week 10 there will be the year one and two behaviour celebrations and the Break up day swims for years 3 to 6. Please see the timetables below for these events:

Junior Swimming Carnival
What a great day it was. It was wonderful to see racing in great spirit and some very talented swimmers. We could not have had this great day without our wonderful parent helpers, tremendous teachers and teacher aids, magnificent Mr Sutherland or our stupendous students. Thank you again for a great day.
Eastern District Sporting Trials
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 possess the advantages of size and speed, if not skill on most occasions. Selectors are choosing those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to go to a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
Next Year’s Early Sporting Trials
It is a little way off just now, but worth noting that there will be a one in seven year change next year (2019) with the Northern Territory hosting National Athletics. Due to this circumstance it is most likely that both the Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals will be held in term one. District Cross Country will be held in week 10 of term 1 and District Athletics will be held in week 5 of term 2. This will mean a considerable increase in the workload for all in term 1 including students. It’s particularly worth noting for those training toward representative honours in Athletics and Cross Country.

Touch Football
Qld All Schools Touch Football Championship
A few weeks ago the Yeronga State School Mixed Touch Football Team went within a whisker of winning the State Title. The team had trained well over the months leading into the tournament but it was their growth in each game that took them from rank outsiders in the 53 team competition to favourites by the semi-finals. On day one the team won all 3 pool games scoring 24 touchdowns and conceding none. Sunday morning saw the team move into the knock out phase in the top 16. A 4-2 win over Dunwich meant a quarter final against Thornlands. The team recorded an impressive 4-0 win in the quarter final and had their sights set on St Thomas Catholic School Toowoomba in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, two key injuries hit the team leaving the remaining players the job of playing extra minutes in the extreme heat against a very experienced team. It was an exciting game and the players demonstrated amazing effort. The game finished in a 4 -4 draw. This saw the game go into a drop off (extra time). St Thomas’ experience proved the difference and they scored the winning touchdown. I’d like to thank and congratulate all the players involved. It was an amazing journey. Also, a big thank you to all the supporters who encouraged the team over the two days.
A special mention and thank you to Phil Wright, Yvonne Starr and Lorien Beazley Cook, for organising and donating a set of multipurpose sports uniforms (shirts, shorts and socks). You can see an example of the shirts in the picture below.

CHAPPY’S-CHAT
Thank you to our Superheroes…
Over the last week, I’ve distributed more than 200 certificates honouring the volunteers that have come into our school to help staff this year. The number of people volunteering their time shows the great strength of our community and how so many value the opportunities for learning, connection and growth. Together we have better supported our students through all aspects of school life, including reading programs, excursions, swimming lessons, tuckshop, support programs, fundraising, and more. Thank you for making such a valuable contribution to our school, and making it an even greater place to be! If you have missed out on getting a certificate (it’s easy for this to happen), please let your child’s teacher know.
Thank you from Chaplaincy…
Thank you so much for also supporting Chaplaincy, and the increased needs in funding the program. This year I’ve been able to work a 3rd day above my usual 2 days/week, so I’ve been around more, and been able to provide pastoral care and support to more students.
I’ve supported the community by:
- Being a positive role model and mentor, and providing lots of parenting tips
- Teaching 5 x “Fun Friends” and 4 x “Friends for Life” classes
- Helping many children with pastoral care conversations to provide social and emotional support covering anxiety, friendship, and educational matters
- Helping parents with referrals for welfare support to access rental assistance, food programs and counselling
- Providing a supply of emergency school lunches for students without food
- Doing hospital and home visits, and attending funerals
- Connecting families with sponsors for the purchase of school resources and uniforms for those in need
- Supporting staff through difficult or challenging issues, and bringing a little cheer through well-being projects, gifts and encouraging words
- Providing spiritual support when requested, connection with community agencies and faith groups, and participation in community prayer gatherings
- Organising and running Chaplaincy programs including Thursday Club, handball competition, Chappy Week, Movie Night, 96Five School Excursion, and Camp at School with Dad
- Attending year 4 camp, year 2 excursion, and year 6 RSL visit
- Facilitating the Bridge Builders program with year 5 and 6 students
I’m looking forward to another fantastic year in 2019, and already have many plans for what Chaplaincy will contribute to the school year. So as school comes to a close for 2018, I wish you all much love, peace and joy at this special time of year. I hope that 2019 will be good for you as well, no matter what challenges will come our way. A very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
