PRINCIPAL REPORT

NAPLAN 2018

Individual NAPLAN results were sent home to students last week. Yeronga has continued to perform strongly on the NAPLAN tests. We have high numbers of our students achieving in the Upper Two Bands and this reflects the deliberate work being done at Yeronga State School. Yeronga students are being given opportunities to develop deep knowledge and in classrooms students are being challenged to think, question and delve deeper into the work. This practice of exposing our students to more than just surface level knowledge means that they are continually improving in an environment that is interesting and engaging. This is the work that will keep our students moving forward and the work that reflects a culture of learning at Yeronga

NAPLAN Review Student Survey

The Queensland Government is undertaking a review of NAPLAN in the Queensland context, to better understand the impacts NAPLAN is having on learning and teaching within the state.

The first stage of the Review, conducted in June 2018, focused on consultation with parents.

The second stage is now underway, with consultation extending to students, teachers, principals and other key education stakeholders across Queensland.

Queensland students in years 3 to 10 are now invited to provide feedback on their experiences with NAPLAN, via an online survey. Students wishing to participate will require the consent of a parent or carer, who can assist with completing the survey at home.

The survey link is available below

https://survey.lsia.com.au/s3/2018NapRevStudent

This project has received ethical clearance from both the Australian Catholic University and the Department of Education. Further information on the student survey and the Review are provided within the survey link.

Ball Games Championship

On Tuesday our students participated in the annual ballgames challenge. The teamwork and collaboration that was evident across all year levels was amazing. Perhaps though the thing that stood out most was the great sportsmanship that we saw throughout the day and this mixed with a healthy sprinkle of competition made for a day full of fun and smiles. Thanks to Cameron Bateman for his organisation of this event.

Student Free Day Term 4

Monday 22 October is a Student Free Day. Our teachers will be engaging in professional learning and year level collaboration as they prepare for 2019. Please ensure you make other arrangements for your children as there will be no supervision at school. YOSCH will be operating from 7am to 6pm – please contact them directly if you would like to use their services.

Year 6 Senior Leaders Program

All students in Year 5 are eligible to become senior leaders by completing an application form that must be signed by staff against set criteria, to apply for the senior leader badge. Senior leaders engage in many activities, including peer mediation, prep buddies, sports room monitoring and are regularly consulted regarding school matters. Once children have been approved as Senior Leaders, they are able to apply for positions such as School Captions, House Captains and Music Captains. The election process for these positions will begin early next term and be concluded prior to the end of the year. Year 5 Parents are encouraged to discuss with their children what they would like to do during this process. Please refer to the Student Leadership Handbook to help you with this. We wish the Year 5 students every success as they begin their leadership journey.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT

It’s been another action packed fortnight here at Yeronga State School, which has included the fabulous ‘Fun Run’, Interschool Mathematics Competition, Great Book Swap, Book Week, ‘Adopt A Cop’ Induction and the annual YSS Ballgames! The Ballgames reflected the wonderful spirit amongst the students, staff and parents at our school and there were some many examples of students using the Learner Assets of being ‘Communicators’ and ‘Collaborators’. It was certainly an exciting day to be a part of, with the trophies for each year level and the ‘Best Dressed’ being hotly contested.

Our staff have also recently been involved in a range of professional development initiatives, which have seen teachers visiting Indooroopilly State School (with a focus on Curiosity and Powerful Learning), Graceville State School (with a focus on Inquiry Learning) and our Yeronga Inclusion Team attending the Regional Inclusive Education Day.

Father’s Day Celebrations

Lots of fun was had in our Prep classrooms at our Father’s Day celebration. All our students enjoyed sharing the morning with someone special and showing them around their classroom.

We would also like to thank everyone that donated to the Father's Day Stall and all the helpers on the day. We really appreciate it. The kids all loved it and am sure took great joy in giving their gifts! We managed to raise $1615 which is a great effort by all.

Learning Assets

At Yeronga State School we want our students to leave our school being literate, numerate and curious. We are doing this by consciously engaging our children in inquiring into how they learn. We are using Kath Murdoch’s “The Power of Inquiry’ to guide us in developing skills and dispositions that act as important assets to our learners. The term ‘assets’ is used to describe the skill sets that are required of students when they inquire into the world around them. The assets are ‘We are Thinkers, We are Collaborators, We are Self-managers, We are Researchers and We are Communicators’.

The focus over the next two weeks in classrooms and assemblies will be on how to be an effective Self Manager. This learning asset compliments the other asset beautifully as it fosters the thinking that children can learn independently and can make decisions about their learning. It allows children to see themselves as learners and set and work towards personal goals. The main goal of the Self Manager learner asset is to create children that are resilient, responsible and reflective.

When talking about self-management with your children you can use the language of:

Plan, organise, persist, self-talk, time-management and risk taking.

‘Adopt a Cop’ Induction

Our school has been extremely fortunate to gain a new ‘Adopt A Cop’. Constable Mekilah (‘Mik’) Acworth from the Annerley Police Station was welcomed in a formal Induction ceremony during the Prep- Year 2 Assembly last week. Constable Mik’s job as an ‘Adopt A Cop’ at YSS will be to build rapport and fulfil an educational role within our school. This may include delivering classroom presentations, sharing specialist knowledge and skills with students and staff, attending key school events, addressing school assemblies and conducting informal ‘drop in’ visits. We hope that Constable Mik enjoys her association with Yeronga State School and we can’t wait to see her out and about around school and dropping in to our classrooms.

Student Council News- Great Book Swap and Free Dress Day

The YSS Student Council held a ‘Great Book Swap’ during Book Week in an effort to raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. We are pleased to report that $130 was raised and these funds will be used to purchase books for students in need.

A Free Dress Day is being held this Friday 14 September. The theme of the day is “Free Dress’- literally! All funds raised will go towards assisting the YSS Fete Committee in their preparations for the 2019 school fete.

Have a wonderful final week of Term Three!

P&C Meeting

We would like to invite you to our final P&C meeting of the term at 7pm on Tuesday 18th September in the Resource Centre. There will be lots to discuss and we are hoping to have a presentation of the new Nature Play Master Plan from Barefoot Landscapes. Hope to see you there.

Free Dress Day

THIS Friday 14 September the School Fete Committee is putting on a Free Dress Day! Simply bring along a gold coin donation, which will go towards the 2019 School Fete preparations. Please note that there is no theme for this free dress day.

Fun Run Prizes

Congratulations to everyone for a wonderful morning at the Fun Run. It was great to see all our students being active and so many parents joining in as well. A very big thank you goes to Mr Curness and Mr Sutherland for setting up the oval for everyone to enjoy.

Don’t forget to order your prizes before THIS Friday 14 September. Go to your profile page, click Order Prizes and choose the prize you want. Please note, if you selected a Goal Prize when you first created your profile, this will NOT be ordered for you. To avoid missing out on a reward, please log in between this date and order your prize(s).

After Friday 14 September, the school will be emailed the full list of prize orders. They will then check them all for accuracy while reconciling cash totals. Once they have completed this task, the school will submit the prize order through to the School Fun-Run team. All prizes will be packed and sent to the school as a collective. The time for all of this to occur is generally around 5 weeks.

If you have any questions, please contact the School Fun-Run team on 1800 FUN RUN and they will gladly assist.

Coding Kids

Students at Coding Kids completed some amazing new projects and new tech challenges! Our coding kids exercised their creativity, problem solving and design skills by creating their own sports and games-themed digital projects. They designed and built their own digital solutions with computer games such as Metal Detector and Pong Starter. Join us for next term’s themes: Fantasy and Stories in Scratch, and Funny Business in Web Dev!

This will include the expression of interest process, the agreement, the requirements for the iPad and the offers from Apple and JB HiFi.

BRISBANE CURRICULUM MATHS TOURNMENT

On Monday 3 September, ten Yeronga students competed at the annual BCL Maths Tournament held at Graceville State School. The following Year 6 and 5 students represented our school.

Team 1 – Huong, Harvey, Alex, Josh and Tiggy
Team 2 – Isabel, Minna, Owais, Mia and Angus

The students answered a series of challenging problem solving questions and competed against 35 other teams. They should be commended for their ability to solve complex problems ‘while the clock was counting down’ and work effectively in a team placing in the top third of the competition.

Well done YSS

Maths Tournament Coordinator

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Congratulations to our Girls Cricketers

Mia G and Olivia C trialled for selection in the Met West Girls Cricket Team on 12 September. Both of the girls worked hard over a long warm day. As is the nature of trials though not everybody can be selected and, on this occasion, Olivia missed out on selection. Commiserations to Olivia who did herself credit and will go into her next set of trials better for the experience. Congratulations to Mia who had to miss the Met West Football trials this year due to a date clash with her camp. Best of luck to her in her training and quest for Queensland selection.

Congratulations Harvey P

Well done to Harvey on being selected in the Met West boys cricket team for the second consecutive year. It’s a great effort and could be an effort that works strongly in his favour for a second Queensland selection. That, to my knowledge, would be an unprecedented achievement at Yeronga State School. Good luck and congratulations again Harvey.

Eastern District Sporting Trials

The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 possess the advantages of size and speed, if not skill on most occasions. Selectors are choosing those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to go to a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.

In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

Next Year’s Early Sporting Trials

It is a little way off just now, but worth noting that there will be a one in seven year change next year with the Northern Territory hosting the National Athletics. This means that it is most likely that both the Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals will be held in term one. District Cross Country will be held in week 10 of term 1 and District Athletics will be held in week 5 of term 2. This will mean a considerable increase in the workload for all in term 1 including students. It’s particularly worth noting for those training toward representative honours in Athletics and Cross Country.

Ball Games 2018 – A Day of Colour, Fun and a Little Noise

What a wonderful day. We had teams dressed in all sorts of costumes. We had the following teams competing: Prep Power, 1C – Captain Curley’s Crew, 1F – Ford’s Fantastic Frogs, 1P – Powlett’s Purple Puppies, 1T – Tigers, 2BR – Breaking Records, 2K – Kemp’s Clowns, 2L – Ms King’s Karate Kids, 2W – Weatley’s Warriors, 3C – C Eagles, 3D – Dunn’s Devils, 3LW - Mrs Wallace’s Witches, Wizards and Warlocks, 3M – McShane’s Magic, 2/3T – Kayla’s Cool Kids, 4CH – Choc Chips, 4L – Landbeck’s Leviathans, 4J – Jumping Jaguars, 4M – Straw no more, 5H – Hartins Hawaiians, 5M – Masselos Malibus, 5W – Wipe outs, 6M – Middleton’s Misfits, 6N – Newby’s Ninjas & 6Q - Quirks Quirks.

The colour, excitement and enthusiasm was so infectious that the teachers and parents joined in the fun against the Year 6 teams. Unfortunately, for the teachers, they were bested by the students this year, but I am sure they will be back next year to compete against the current Year 5’s.

The most successful teams on the day of competition were, of course, our year level champions;

Prep – Not Competitive
Year 1 - 1C – Captain Curley’s Crew
Year 2 - 2BR – Breaking Records
Year 3 - 3M – McShane’s Magic
Year 4 - 4M – Straw no more
Year 5 - 5H – Hartins Hawaiians
Year 6 - 6M – Middleton’s Misfits.

Now the day was not just about the sporting competition as there are also aesthetic considerations over who the best dressed teams are. In the year one and two group (Junior School) the best dressed team was 2L – King’s Karate Kids. In the Senior School group (Year 3 to 6) the best dressed team was 6Q – Quirk’s Quirks. Our Judges had a very difficult time deciding. Thank you again to our judges for carrying out an unenviable task

Some other thank yous are in order. The people who made our day such a success in our beautiful venue were our wonderful supportive parents, our dedicated teachers, our amazing announcer Mrs Paynter, our dedicated and very tired groundsman Mr Sutherland and, of course our fantastic students. Until next year. Thank you all for a magnificent day.

Saludos para todas las familias de Yeronga./Hello Yeronga families.

Here are some photos of our prep work from the unit La Ropa/Clothing. This activity is from our story ‘Froggy’. Students also learnt songs and one of their favourite songs was ‘Jugamos en el bosque’ about a wolf. Please ask your child about what they learnt in Spanish this term.

Year 1

Congratulations to these students who won their class colouring competition. I have also included photos of activities they have done learning about zoo animals and matching their body parts.

Year 2

Our year 2 have being working hard finishing their houses. This term year 2 have used our iPads (scratch) to design a house and different rooms around the house and in Spanish students had to describe their rooms. Ask them to share their houses with you as they all have worked well. Congratulations to all year 2.

Stay tuned to next newsletter for more photos from our Year 3.

RU OK? Day

Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians between 15 and 44 years of age, with more young Australians likely to take their own life than die in a car accident. RUOK? Day is a great reminder for us all that we can make meaningful connections and support people struggling with life. I encourage you to jump into action and check in with people in your life to see if they are okay. It only takes 4 steps – ask if they are ok, listen (without judgement), encourage action, and regularly check in.

96FIVE School Excursion

This exciting morning is only 1 week away. On the last day of this term, the radio station 96FIVE will be doing a live radio broadcast for their breakfast program on our school oval from 6am until 9am. Our students will be reading the weather every 15 minutes after the news. The choir will be performing at 8:05am. Key staff will also be interviewed throughout the broadcast.

Wake up early and come to school for breakfast with Chappy pancakes, sausage sizzle, and a coffee cart. There are also other fun activities including jumping castle, sporting games, and loads more.

See you there!

Upcoming events…

21 September - 96Five School Excursion
27 – 28 October - Camp at School with Dad
