PRINCIPAL REPORT
Parking and Road Safety
Thank you to the many people who are using the 2 minute STOP KISS GO zone so well. A reminder to move to the bottom of the zone before picking up or dropping off and please do not do a U-turn in front of this zone. Parking is prohibited in this zone so please ensure that traffic flows freely by not leaving your car in the zone.
Please note that there is no parent parking in the school grounds. We continue to get a number of calls to the office reporting registration numbers of cars that do not adhere to this policy and this makes it very frustrating for the many parents who are doing as asked.
Finally when driving around the school at peak times such as before and after school please be extra vigilant as there are large numbers of students and parents walking or riding to school. Safety is everyone`s responsibility so please help us keep our community safe.
School Opinion Survey
The 2018 School Opinion Survey period is now open. The suite of surveys are undertaken each year by the Department of Education to obtain opinion information from parents/caregivers, students and school staff. The surveys are designed to help schools identify what they do well, and how they can improve.
Completion of the annual School Opinion Survey is undertaken online. Participation in the School Opinion Survey is voluntary, however I would strongly encourage all parents and carers to provide their opinions, as the greater the response rate from survey participants, the more closely the survey results will be representative of the overall opinions held at our school. Details regarding the survey will be distributed over the coming week
Enrolments
Children are eligible for Prep in 2019 if they are born between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014. For those families who live within Yeronga State School`s catchment and intend to enrol for 2019, please submit the enrolment forms as this will help us in planning for next year. For further information please refer to ‘From The Office’ in this newsletter.
Week 3
I feel very fortunate this term to have the opportunity to be part of the Yeronga community. Thank you to everyone for making me feel very welcome in my first weeks here. I am very impressed with the behaviour of our students and know that this comes from a joint effort between school and home.
Yeronga classrooms are full of engaged and motivated learners who question and reflect on their learning. Teachers encourage students to be active participants in their learning and this is what will set our children up for success as they navigate a lifetime of new learnings in a world that will continue to change.
Have a wonderful week and don`t forget the Chappy Movie night this Friday. A great opportunity to catch up with other families!

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT
Welcome to another busy couple of weeks at Yeronga State School. In the coming weeks we look forward to a visit by the Life Education Van, a Year One Fire Services visit, the Chappy Movie Night, Parent Teacher Interviews and the Year 5 ‘Hoodwinked’ excursion to Pullenvale.
Year Four Camp
Our Year Four students returned from their three camp experience last week tired, but full of stories about the challenges they faced and the great spirit in which they participated in all of the challenges. We are extremely proud of these students for the fortitude they displayed and for representing Yeronga State School and their families so admirably. Thank you to the enthusiastic and energetic group of staff who accompanied the students to Camp Goodenough.

NAIDOC Week 2018
During Assembly in Week 1 and 2 we celebrated and recognised NAIDOC Week for 2018. Our celebrations were focused around the theme: "Because of Her, We Can!" and acknowledged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women's contribution to both the Indigenous and broader community.
We were extremely fortunate to be joined by some special visitors- Jeanette Fabila, who joined the Senior Assembly and Helen Hynd, who joined the Junior Assembly. Jeanette Fabila is a teacher, choreographer, cultural consultant and performing artist. Her experience spans over 25 years of performing and teaching audiences locally, nationally and internationally about her Aboriginal heritage. Helen Hynd is a parent and former student of Yeronga State School who maintains strong ties with the school. Many thanks to both of these ladies for sharing their stories so willingly and thank you also to Maggie Nolan for assisting in the planning for these celebrations.
Staff Farewell
Last week our staff gathered to celebrate the retirement of four much-loved staff members. Kerri McGuire, Julie Crossley, Michelle Noye and Marg Malouf were thanked for their many years of service to Yeronga State School and will be missed by all.
Assembly- Term Three
During Term Three we have implemented a change to our school Assembly, including a new start time of 1:45pm. We would love to see parents there! Please note the following details:

P & C REPORT
School Fun Run
Our school will be holding a School Fun-Run on Friday 31 August 2018 to help raise money to air-condition our classrooms. Leading up to the Fun-Run day, our students will ask people in the community to support them for participating. Parents will receive a parent letter with details on the fun run, how to fundraise and a sponsorship booklet after the assembly.
Details are: 9.15 – 9.45am Year 1 to 3; 9.45 – 10.15am Prep; 10.15-11am Year 4 to 6. Participants are encouraged as many laps as they would like to during that time, and participate in an obstacle course.
Everyone who raises at least $10 gets a really cool prize. The more each child raises the better their prize can be! There are all sorts of prizes, from handballs or squishy balls, right through to an X-Box or a Hoverboard! Families could even win a $30,000 Webjet Family experience. Check out @schoolfunrun
Run with dad
As our fun run is just before Father’s Day, dads or a significant person can run with the kids at school! Make it extra fun and have dad dress up as a superhero or favourite pop-star.
Even if dad can’t run on the day he can still help train for the event. Kids and dads can post their training photo's on their fundraising pages. It's all about participation.
The P&C will keep you updated weekly. In the meantime, if you have any questions contact Peppa Brown, P&C Vice President (peppab@gmail.com).

We would like to thank all the parents for their continued support with paying for invoices online and with QParents.
We’d just like to remind everyone of our payment desk opening times:
Tuesday 8:15am-8:45am & Thursday 8:15am-8:45am
Location: A Block (ground level door facing tennis courts at the end of block A). Look for the Payment Desk signs.
All other times, payments are to be made online with BPoint or QParents, or correct money placed in an envelope with student name, class and event and put it into Box 1 at the payment boxes.
Please note that if payments are not received by the school by the due date students may not be able to attend the event.
Notifying of Student Absence
Please remember to advise the school of all student absences by 8.30am. We cannot assume students are attending sporting events, open days etc so please ensure these are also reported. Our preferred way to receive this information is through QParents. Once you have set up your QParents account, you can download the app and advise an absence from your phone or IPad, as well as from your computer. You can also advise absences in advance i.e long weekends, holidays, off campus activities.

SPANISH
Year 4 Monster Hunt
In Term 2, our Year 4 students created and described some amazing monsters. Unfortunately, they escaped from the Spanish room and that required our students to become Cazadores de monstruos (monster hunters). For four days, they looked at the characteristics of the most wanted one and looked for it at 1st break. We could see Cazadores in groups winning points for their classes.
The winner was 4L and as whole-class prize, they made fruit monsters.

Senior Learning
Students in Year 5 and 6 enjoyed going on a Cultural Journey to Puerto Rico and the USA respectively, presented by Leanne Simon, one of the many Spanish speaking parents in our school community. Coming from the USA, Leanne gave us a clear perspective of the importance of Spanish in countries whose official language is English. Our students learned about history, salsa and drank a toast in Spanish with delicious horchata. Feel free to google the recipe and delight the family with a tasty and simple treat.
Language Nut Information Day
As part of the Spanish program, the school has subscribed to an online language-learning website called Languagenut. Languagenut is an online learning tool to help students learn a second language in a fun and interactive environment. Students can access our language resources at home by going to the link below or downloading the Languagenut App. Please use the login details that your child has be given.
http://www.languagenut.com/
Please find attached a step by step guided on how to login and use the program. We are planning to have a Languagenut demonstration evening on Monday 20th August at 4:30pm in the resource centre for those parent/care givers that would like more information.
Should you experience any problems please contact Señora Andrea Bueno Prep – year 4 Spanish Teacher abuen4@eq.edu.au or Señora Massiel Salfate Year 4 – 6 Spanish Teacher msalf1@eq.edu.au.

Qld Golf
Congratulations to Harvey P on his great effort at the Qld Golf Championships. When last I contacted his Father Harvey was sitting in 9th place. I am sure we all can’t wait to hear more about Harvey’s South Burnett adventure when he returns

Congratulations to Harvey P for being selected in the Qld golf team. Harvey will now represent Qld at the National Championships in Melbourne.
State Cross Country Championships
Margaret G. competed in the State Cross Country Championships at Buderim on the weekend of 21st – 23rd July. Margaret ran 3 km and crossed the finished line in 14th place out of a starting group of 65 girls. It was a great effort from Margaret but she is determined to go better in 2019. On Sunday a relay event was held and the Met West 12 year old girls narrowly missed out on a medal finishing fourth behind Met East.
Junior Boys Soccer Team claim Met West Championship for the second year in a row
Last Friday the Yeronga Junior A Boys Soccer team added the regional title to their district title. As winners of the Eastern Taipan District the boys had to play the winning teams of the other Met West Districts at Ipswich last Friday. All three games were played on the main field at Western Pride Football Club. For many of the boys playing on a National Premier League main field was a highlight many of the team members won’t forget.
The team won all three games and played a very entertaining brand of football (soccer). The teamwork and sheer determination demonstrated throughout all three games by the Yeronga players proved to be the two key ingredients that helped them be so successful.
Results:
4-0 win over Kenmore South
SS
6-0 win over Springfield SS
3-1 win over Mt Crosby SS
The team will now represent Met West at the South East Queensland Championships (SEQ Cup) on August 24. We wish them all the best at the next carnival.
Keep a lookout for an update on the Junior Girls team in the next newsletter. They are playing Mt Crosby State School with the winner joining our boys as Met West champions.

Athletics Training
Athletics training will continue on Monday afternoons (3:15 to 3:45) and Thursday mornings (8 to 8:30) until the Met West Athletics Carnival.

Gala Days (10 to 12 Years Students)
Do not forget to return your permission forms for Gala Days and to stay alert for practice sessions. It is important to show commitment to your team and, of course to hone your skills. Remember that Gala Day one will be on 24 August.
Eastern District Sporting Trials
Students turning 10 – 12 years old in 2018 are able to nominate to attend Eastern Taipan District sporting trials. Athletes who compete at district trials must have a high level of ability in their chosen sport.
Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 possess the advantages of size and speed, if not skill on most occasions. Selectors are choosing those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to go to a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
District Representative Sport Opportunities
If your child is interested in participating in a selection trial, contact Mr Bateman a month before the trials. Dates can be found on the Eastern Taipan District website and below . District Convenors expect each school to only nominate students who have exhibited a very high level of ability in that sport. Whilst your child may be at the highest level at club sport, this is no guarantee they will be selected to try-out for District Team. Our school has 2 sports convenors who understand the standard required and for this reason we only send children who demonstrate that high level of ability.
Qualification for Track and Field, Swimming and Cross Country district trials are finalised after the school carnivals.

CHAPPY’S-CHAT
A major part of my role as School Chaplain is providing pastoral care; helping families in need going through a rough patch or facing ongoing difficulties. While I know a lot of what is happening across the school community, there are many times that I’m unaware of individual families situations and needs. So please let me know if I can be of any help. It might be that I can help out of the resources that I have here at school (through donations and sponsorships), by accessing community support programs, or by making appropriate external referrals. I’m also available just if you need someone to talk to and have a cup of coffee.
