PRINCIPAL REPORT
Our Health and The Health of Others
It is important that we are all vigilant with looking after our health and that of others. If students are unwell with the cold or flu, it is best to stay home. Washing hands is one simple way of avoiding the spread of disease.
We have a young student in Year 1 whose sister has cancer and it is imperative that students with contagious diseases are not at school and the school is notified of these illnesses.
Her sister must avoid contact with diseases such as chicken pox, whooping cough, measles, etc. These diseases would be very harmful for a person getting treatment. However, if we are aware of any contact with them, appropriate medications can be given to help her fight these off. It is important that the family know urgently!
ANZAC Day
Thank you to parents and families who were able to attend the school’s Anzac ceremony and the march on the 25th. It was lovely to march with almost fifty students and Kate Paynter on Anzac Day. A big thank you to Julie for providing somewhere dry to sit and for refreshing fruit and Anzac biscuits.
Dogs In The School Grounds
Many families like to walk to or from school with their dogs. Making sure that they are on a leash and under your control is very important. Please do not tie your dogs up in the school grounds and leave them as I have witnessed dogs unattended growling and/or jumping up on children. Parents are the best people to judge if their dog will be safe. It is important to note that we have to file a dangerous dog report to the Brisbane City Council if anyone is bitten. Please help us keep our children and your dogs safe.
Assistant Regional Director Visit
The school also was visited by the acting Assistant Regional Director, Keith Warwick, on Thursday. He walked into many classrooms. It was wonderful to see such engaged students. I am pleased that many students were able to articulate their learning intensions and success criteria, their understanding of working collaboratively and their knowledge of their units of work. The language of inquiry is obvious with some students. The main goal of the school is to have literate, numerate and curious students. He commented on the school working towards reducing the variability in language and instruction within the CPL philosophy. There was indication of strong team work with staff and students. Finally, there was evidence of the writing agenda in practice in classrooms with artefacts displayed. Well done Yeronga.
Yeronga State High School
On Monday 30, Deputy Principal, Kate Paynter and I were invited to present awards to students in Term 1 Academic achievement and Exemplary Effort and Behaviour Awards ceremony. There were many ex-Yeronga State School students who were recipients of the various awards. Mrs Deb Spanner would have been very proud of her students. The two schools have a very close working relationship and I look forward to learning more about their up-coming Open Days and Exceptional Learners Program.
Other Events
This week the junior students will have their cross country. Please ensure that they are in sports uniform with the correct shoes. Part of the course leaves the school grounds but staff are at check points along the way. We look forward to a morning of fun and fitness.
In week 5, students in Years 3 and 5 will complete the Naplan tests from Tuesday 15 to Thursday 17 May. Any student absent on those days will be given the opportunity to complete the tests on Friday.
Parking
Please be considerate of our neighbours and be sure not to park across driveways. We have received reports of vehicles blocking all or part of driveways. Remember that residents must always have clear access in and out their properties.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT
We have certainly ‘hit the ground’ running here at Yeronga State School in between School Photos, ANZAC Day and Gala Day! It’s shaping up to be another busy few weeks ahead with our P-2 Cross Country, Senior Athletics Trials and preparations for Mother’s Day and NAPLAN.
Cross Country
Our Junior Cross Country was an exciting event for our Prep, Year One and Year Two students. It was great to see the looks of delight and relief as students crossed the finish line and were able to gain a sense of accomplishment for taking part.
ANZAC Day Ceremony
The Yeronga State School ANZAC Day Commemoration took place last Tuesday and it was wonderful to see a large number of parents and extended family members joining us. We were extremely happy with how the way our students conducted themselves and took part so respectfully in this important occasion, which has a long and significant history within our school community. We felt a great deal of pride in Yeronga State School as we received many positives comments from visitors about the students and presentation of our school.
ANZAC Day March
A large group of Yeronga State School students and parents represented our school in the ANZAC Day March last Wednesday morning. The march followed a new path this year, along Park Rd and School Rd, before ending up in the Yeronga Memorial Park for the ANZAC Day Ceremony, which is run by the Stephen’s Branch of the RSL. It was wonderful to see our school also represented in the combined school band, which played during the ceremony. A big thank you to the Griffiths family for getting up ‘bright and early’ to set up some tarpaulins for our students to sit on in the park and also for providing some fruit and ANZAC biscuits for our students to snack on!
Head Lice
Please note that an email has been sent to all parents in regards to head lice, as we have had some incidence of head lice being detected by families within our school community. Please support us by carrying out regular checks on your child.
Fabulous Facebook Frenzy
The Facebook frenzy continues as we have seen an ongoing increase in the number of Facebook ‘likes’ we have been receiving with every post that goes on to our Yeronga State School Facebook page! Spread the word to other parents and family members, as we love sharing all of the wonderful features of our school with you all.
We are looking forward to some fun on Friday 4 May as we have some special ‘Star Wars’ visitors!

P & C REPORT
Yeronga State School Building Fund Appeal 2018
In 2018, the building fund appeal is our biggest fundraiser of the year.
The P&C continually work to improve the conditions our children are learning in, but we can’t do it without your support.
One of the aims of the Cool Schools program is to get air conditioning into all our great classrooms. We know that kids learn so much better when comfortable. The P&C has already paid for air conditioning in the new music room and Year 3 classrooms. Next week we’re installing air conditioning in the Prep classrooms but we want to do more in the other grades.
We’re asking for a donation from each family. We recommend $50-70 per child, but any sized donation is welcome.
Each gift is tax deductible and this year can be done online in less than 3 minutes. With tax time coming there is no better time to invest in your school and your children’s future.
Please make a gift today. Your children and teachers will thank you.

Mother’s Day Stall
Our annual Mother’s Day stall is on next Friday 11th May. Children can now bring in their gift for the stall of approx. $5 in value, to be collected by their class teacher. The children then bring $3 to school on the day of the stall to choose a special gift for their Mum.
Please email Kristen if you have any questions or would like to help on the stall. kristenmjennings@gmail.com
Easter Raffle
All records were broken for the Easter Raffle this year with a profit of $4 128. A total number of 137 prizes were delivered to the lucky winners on the 23rd March. The class that sold the most tickets collectively is …….. Prep 5. Congratulations to all the students in the Prep 5 and your prize will be arranged in the next few weeks. After a number of years, Ruth Bennett is hanging up her rabbit ears and will no longer be co-ordinating the Easter Raffle. If anyone would like to take on this role or would like more information about what is involved, please email ruthbennett4105@gmail.com.
ANZAC Day Morning Tea
Thank you so very much to the members of the school community who supplied sweet and savoury treats for the morning tea held after the ANZAC Day ceremony. The food was absolutely delicious and was appreciated by all of the invited guests. Once again, our community has displayed our school motto – Service Before Self.
P&C Meeting
The next P&C meeting will be held at 7pm in the Resource centre on Tuesday 15th May. Please come along and hear what's been happening in our school community.

Missing Phone
A staff member’s phone went missing from under the Year 1 building in the first week of school. If anyone has seen or knows the where-abouts of the phone, please can you contact the office.
Million Stars Project
One Million Stars was a peaceful global weaving project. The One Million Stars installation was held in King George Square, Brisbane from 29 March to 15 April 2018 as part of Festival 2018 during Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Caitlin and Maeve, past Yeronga State School students, were excited to visit the finished product that they contributed to last year with Mrs Walker.
YEAR 6 CAMP
In the last week of term 1, Year 6 visited Garapine Educational Camp. The students (and teachers) enjoyed a wide range of activities such as rafting building, orienteering, bush skills and archery over four days surrounded by lush countryside and gorgeous weather.
It must be said that the student’s behaviour and enthusiasm was outstanding and there were no late night antics or grumpy teachers in sight! On the final night, the students revealed their hidden talents in the Year 6 Yeronga’s Got Talent. The night demonstrated that some have more talent than others (either that or some of us are to humble to reveal any talent whatsoever). Congratulations to Tiggy and Rose who were victorious on the night.
We all arrived back safe, albeit a little tired but very happy with our wonderful time away.

Gala Days (10 to 12 Years Students)
Gala Days for Semester One have reached their conclusion. However we have boys and girls football teams who have won the cluster (what used to be known as our district). We await details to see where and when these teams will play off for regional supremacy.
Eastern District Sporting Trials
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 possess the advantages of size and speed, if not skill on most occasions. Selectors are choosing those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to go to a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.
Running Club
Mr Sutherland will be holding a Running Club on Friday mornings at 8am on the senior oval. All students are welcome to come and have some fun while getting fit.

GALA DAY
Eastern Taipans Girls Touch Football
Congratulations to Maddie I, Alexia S, Tahlia B and Margaret G on their recent selection in the Eastern Taipans District Touch Football team. Also, to past student Myla T on her selection. The girls will attend the Met West trials in June and we wish them all the best.
Eastern Taipans Girls Football (Soccer)
Congratulations to Thea C, Maddie I and Mia G on their selection in the Eastern Taipans Girls Football team. Also, to past student Lucy C and Claudia W on their selection. The girls will attend the Met West trials in June and we wish them every success.
Gala Day 3 Boys A Division Soccer
Gala Day 3 proved to be another exciting day for the A division soccer teams. The Seniors had two very tight games against Algester and Moorooka. Their most pleasing result even though it was a loss was the game against Stretton where the team really gelled together and found the back of the net several times against the under defeated District champions.
The Junior team continued on their unbeaten run. However, Algester scored a late equalizer to hold the boys to their first draw of the season. We are waiting on confirmation that the Junior boys have won the championship.
DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY
The Yeronga State School cross country team had heads turning yesterday at the District trials. The runners were sporting the new school singlets which looked fantastic. The highlights on the course started in the first race with three of our 11 Year Old boys finishing in the top 6 (Harry A 3rd, Alex P 5th and Elijah H 6th). The top 10 finishes continued to flow with Chloe F 2nd in the 11 Year Old girls, Harry C 6th in the 12 Year Old Boys and Mighty Margaret G winning the 12 Year Old girls. After a short break the 10 Year Old girls continued to add to the top 10 finishers with Antonia M 9th and Lizzie H 10th.
Over half of the team finished in the top 25 runners in each race. It was pleasing to see every Yeronga runner giving their best and representing the school with pride and passion. All 36 competitors should be very proud of their efforts and achievements.
The team behind the team also deserves a special thanks. Mr Bateman, Mr Sutherland and the office ladies for their organisation and preparation. The parent crew who attended the day were outstanding. They provided a very positive vibe around the tent and were extremely helpful in assisting the students and Mr Curness.

CHAPPY’S-CHAT
Don’t Forget to Connect…
My family recently had a camping trip to Girraween National Park with a group of friends. Camping isn’t my favourite type of holiday, but is something that I’m enjoying for this season with my family. I love that it takes us away from technology, and instead provides wonderful interactions with nature. There is more physical activity as we explore the surrounds as well as set up and pack down camp. Most importantly, it has been a great way for us all to build connection with our friends.
Camping isn’t the only way to provide connections, and as a family we have other ways to interact with our friends. If you feel challenged to put more thought and planning into building community and expanding your friendship groups for your family, it might be that you need to meet other families through common interests or groups. In the Yeronga surrounds, we have so many choices for community activities.
Recently I had the privilege of supporting a family at school and helping them to connect with other families to continue meeting their ongoing needs. It was wonderful to have so many parents step up and volunteer to help and become part of that family’s circle of support. We have a great community of people in our school! Thank you to those families.
Upcoming events…
This term my fundraiser is a sub and drink lunch deal that will be enjoyed by staff and students on Tuesday 22 May. Envelopes will be going out early next week with all the information, and they can be returned to in the special stand-alone boxes near the usual payment boxes provided by Friday 18 May. All funds raised are used entirely for the Chaplaincy program to operate at Yeronga State School. Thank you for your support.

GREEN TEAM
Although our school is moving towards a digital future, we still use a lot of paper. We throw away tons of it every day. To avoid wasting paper and therefore precious trees, we’d love you to start a conversation with your child about:
- Using both sides of a piece of paper
- Thinking carefully before printing…and printing on both sides
- Using scrap paper for non-important activities like rough drafts
- Using old pictures or paintings for wrapping paper or origami or a myriad of other creative activities
- Shredding it for packing or composting
- Recycling it when there is no more use for it
The trees will thank you!
