PRINCIPAL REPORT
SENIOR LEADERSHIP ELECTIONS
For the last few weeks Year 5 senior leaders have been involved in leadership selection process for Student Leadership positions for 2018. There are a number of positions that are all selected in different ways, but in general involve candidates presenting a speech to a targeted audience and the audience selecting their representatives for the year.
Year 6 students began our process by coordinated our polling booth on Friday 17 November as we held the 2018 School Captain elections. We had another outstanding field of contenders for the position this year and the Year 3-5 students had a hard task in selecting the representatives.

BIG PLAY and BIG MUSIC Evening – 2017
Our music program has drawn to a close this year with our final music evening last Friday night, showcasing the Choral program. Congratulations to the performers for their commitment to the many hours of practice over the course of the year. Thank you to parents for having them at rehearsals on time and encouraging them to practice. Thank you also to our music teachers, Mrs Rosewarne, Ms Holms, Jodie Brighton and Ms Plumridge for your encouragement and support of all music students. Jodie and Clarissa Holms are both leaving this year. Alex Grodecki will be replacing Jodie and Mrs Eastgate is returning to replace Clarissa as Strings teacher.
Ms Plumridge is transferring to another school next year. Ms Plumridge has been a part of YSS for the last eleven years and has established the Music program has a signature program in the school. It was beautiful to see the standing ovation Ms Plumridge received from our community last week at the Big Sing, a lovely way to acknowledge her incredible contribution to Yeronga SS.
I have been busy recruiting and Mrs Lauren Easey will be joining us as classroom music teacher for 2018. Mrs Easey will meet with Ms Plumridge next Tuesday when she visits the school for orientation.
The new building will be open in 2018 so our Music program will have a great new location. Unfortunately it is not a performance space so we will continue to negotiate to find a solution for our performance space issue. It has been wonderful of Coorparoo State School and Sherwood State School to allow us access to their performance venues this year and I thank them for their generosity.
YEAR 6 GRADUATION
This Monday 4 December, Year 6 will attend their Graduation evening. The Year 6 cohort have had a great year, rising to the challenges of leading the school. We are sad to see you departing however excited knowing how ready you are to embrace the next stage of schooling.
Thank you to the many Year 6 families that will be leaving us next week too. Many of you have been at our school for 10 years or more, contributing to our community in so many ways. We have enjoyed having you as part of the Yeronga State School community and wish your family health and happiness for the future.
CLASS ALLOCATION 2018
2018 Prep class placements will be published next Wednesday 5 December via e-mail. Year 1- 6 parents will receive e-mail notification of their children’s placements for 2018 on Thursday 18 January. Please remember that final classes will not be confirmed until Day 8 2018 as this is when we will know our final staffing allocations. This means that there may be changes to the class teacher or the class structure after Day 8 enrolment numbers.
The leadership team and class teachers have given careful consideration and a lot of time to determining class allocations. We appreciate the additional information and requests that parents have shared and have kept this in mind as we have determined placements. No further correspondence regarding class placements will be considered at this time. After staffing allocations are complete from Day 8, we will advise of any proposed changes to classes.
REPORT CARDS
Semester 2 Report cards will be distributed via e-mail to parents next week. If both parents have an email address recorded, the report card will go to both.
Be sure to take some time to celebrate the semester of learning with your child. Effort and Behaviour ratings will give you the best indication of how your child has progressed. These ratings are expressed as either Excellent, Very Good, Satisfactory, Needs Attention and Unacceptable. All children should be able to achieve a Satisfactory or better for their efforts in individual subject areas.
Junior school academic ratings are expressed as either Very High, High, Sound, Developing and Support Required. Senior School academic ratings are expressed as A-E. These ratings are determined at a state level and align to the national requirement to report to parent using a 5 point scale. If you have any questions about your child’s report cards, please talk to the class teacher.
STAFFING
As the end of the year draws to a close it is important for us to pause to express our appreciation to the staff who are leaving us at the end of the year.
Mrs Kerri McGuire is retiring after 18 years of dedicated service to the YSS community. Kerri and her family have had a long association with Yeronga SS and Kerri’s commitment to ensuring Yeronga SS staff, students and parents are learning, caring, growing and achieving is commendable. She has epitomised the school motto of Service before Self by continually going the extra mile to ensure every child was successful. Kerri has been a vital cog in the operating rhythm of Yeronga State School and she will be missed. She will however be around at different times still as she has put her hand up to do some relief work next year.
Mrs Judy Fallon is retiring after years at YSS. Judy’s pedagogical knowledge and deep understanding of quality differentiation has led her out of the classroom into targeted support for writing in recent years, where she has motivated and challenged students to develop a love of writing. Thank you to Judy for her great service to our school and hope you enjoy your travels in retirement.
Mrs Glenda Webb has advised that she will retire next year. Glenda was a Year 7 teacher at Yeronga for nigh on ten years, building a well-deserved reputation for preparing all students extremely well for their transition into high school. We wish Glenda all the best as she embraces all that retirement life has to offer.
Ms Meaghan Townsend has taught at our school for the last two years, in Year 1 and as the Geography teacher. Meaghan is planning to move states next year so will not be returning. We thank her for all that she has done to help our children be successful and her willingness to share her professional expertise.
Ms Kate Burrell has been working with us this year, in partnership with Liz Kemp on 2K and Mrs Pollock in Prep 4. Mrs Burrell will be working at another school fulltime next year. We thank her for her contribution to our school.
Ms Laurel Janke is taking leave for Semester One next year. We hope she has a wonderful holiday and look forward to seeing her when she returns.
Ms Sandra Turk, our Spanish teacher, is going to study next year. Thank you for leading our Spanish program for the last two years and we wish you all the best for your future endeavours.
Mrs Judy Beckett has been a school cleaner at Yeronga State School for the past 31 years. Judy has lead the cleaning team, with additional responsibilities like coordinating the cleaning schedule, staff replacement and being responsible for opening and closing the school. Judy has decided to retire at the end of this year. Judy’s contribution to staff well-being cannot be underestimated with her significant contribution to the staff social club. Thank you Judy and we hope you enjoy your well-earned retirement.
Staff that have been transferred are Leanne Ford and Nicholas Landbeck. Kate Thomas, who has been teaching in Year 1 for a day a week will work full time next year. All other staff will continue to work with us.

Tuckshop News
I am very excited that Stacey Resetti will be increasing her hours and working 3 days a week in 2018. Stacey has been a fantastic addition to Wednesdays this year – her homemade sausage rolls have gained legendary status – and with the addition of Thursday and Friday next year this will allow more time to workshop new recipes, special food days and most importantly assist myself in the day to day running of the tuckshop.
We will be open the last week of school on the Wednesday and Thursday – not Friday 08 December.
Lastly, I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all the volunteers who help in the tuckshop. My bakers have done an awesome job in keeping up with demand and the volunteers who help to put all the lunches together, I could not do it without you – literally!!
All the best for the holiday season and see you in 2018.

ELECTION DAY BBQ
A very big thank you to all those people who contributed to the success of the Election Day BBQ. For the first time, the P&C co-ordinated the BBQ and the Cake Stall. Early Saturday morning, large amounts of cakes, slices and sweets started to be delivered. Yeronga State School certainly has a great bunch of bakers and by the end of the day all items were sold. The Cake Stall made a profit of a little over $1,000. Thank you to Leah Lane who gave up her Saturday to co-ordinator the stall.
The BBQ was fired up and the first bacon and egg roll was sold before 8.00am. Over the course of 6 hours, volunteers cooked and sold 3kgs of bacon, 30kgs of sausages, 10kgs of hamburger patties and 7 dozen eggs. Thirty loaves of bread were used and countless hamburger buns. Thank you to all the volunteers who gave of their time.
A special mention must go to the sponsors of the BBQ. Slap & Sons Sausage Manufacturers donated 10kgs of sausages
http://www.slapeandsons.com.au/
Darren Cosgrove from ePlace Realty volunteered all day and kindly donated the cost of the meat and salad ingredients.

The Election Day BBQ was a highly successful fundraiser for the P&C with close to $3,000.00 being raised.
Parent Rep Thanks
We would like to express our gratitude to Gretta Palmer for the fantastic work she has put in to researching, consulting with other schools and then establishing, running and refining the Parent Rep program over the last 5 years. I'm sure many of you would agree that staying on top of the many goings on at the school has been made much easier by our parent rep network. Gretta is handing the reigns over to Jodie Swan for 2018 and we thank Gretta for the time and effort she has invested over the last 5 years for making an immeasurable difference to our school community. Thank you to Jodie for volunteering to take on this job for 2018! We are also thankful to all those parent reps for 2017, particularly in a fete year when emails increase in number! Thank you for keeping us all so well informed.
Happy Christmas
The P&C executive would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a safe New Year. Thank you everyone for your support and encouragement over the year. We truly appreciate every volunteer, every baker, every ticket seller, every hand in every pocket and every attendee at every event. It has been a great year with a fantastic fete, great raffles, successful grant applications, wonderful mother's and father's day stalls, refreshing snow cones, fun trivia, and productive meetings. We thank especially those people who turn up again and again to help - you all know who you are. We love our school community and can't wait to see what great achievements we can make next year. A number of the executives are resigning next year and we will be needing a new P&C President and Treasurer. If you would like more information about what each of these roles entails, please drop us an email at: yerongasspand@gmail.com.
Have a great break everyone and stay cool and safe. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our AGM on 20 February 2018 at 6:00pm.
Jo Thomson, P&C Committee

MUSIC
Big Play, Big Sing, Big WOW!
Congratulations to all our young Yeronga Musicians. The Band and Choral Awards and Celebration nights held at Coorparoo and Sherwood State schools showcased the great community support for music in our school. We farewelled Jodie Brighton (Band), Charise Holm (Strings) and thanked them and Robyn Rosewarne (Band) for all they have contributed to our instrumental programs. We welcome back Tamsyn Eastgate as our Strings Instructor after maternity leave.
Last Friday was my farewell choral concert, involving 144 students from years 2-6. Helena and Lauren showed courage and great skill development as they stood in front of the 76-voice Junior Choir and conducted them perfectly. Congratulations girls!
All students involved in all concerts this year, as well as their younger siblings, are to be congratulated on their perfect behaviour as artists and audience members.

INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY
On Tuesday 28 November, boys and their fathers from across Years 5 and 6 got together for a breakfast and discussion at the school’s resource centre, in order to celebrate International Men’s Day for 2017.
The guest speaker at this event was Andrew Howell, the CEO of the Right Direction Australia, a not for profit organisation committed to empowering adolescents with positive life skills. Andrew spoke about the crucial theme of communication and the role it plays in dealing with life’s pressures and challenges. Activities such as developing ‘more of’ and ‘less of’ behaviour lists worked towards the events objectives which included promoting and supporting gender equality and focusing on the health of boys and men.
A big thank you to all who attended at this busy time of year and to those who helped in the preparation and setting up of this event.

RESOURCE CENTRE
Return of Borrowed Library Books
All books are due back to the library now, if your child has a book still out you will have received a slip indicating the book. You have some options when dealing with an overdue book. You can either purchase the book yourself and hand it into the library for processing or you can pay a $20 fee for the school to replace the book. Thank you in your support in returning all school books.
Online Libraries
Just because it is the school holidays and the students no longer have access to the school library, this does not mean they cannot explore information and read. Access to both World Book Online and the schools online eplatform library is available. All students have the log on details. However, if they have forgotten please check at the library or with your class teacher. Year 6 students still have access to these resources until they start high school.

Lawson rules the pool as Kendall rules the fields. Congratulations again to both teams on great years.
Thank you to all of our parents who helped officiate at the swimming carnival. Additionally, thank you to Mr Palmer, from Yeronga State School High School, who organised student helpers for our carnival. These people contributed greatly to the smooth running of our carnival.

Junior Swimming Carnival
This wonderful event takes place on 30 November. It begins at 9:00 with our year 2’s competing. Then, at 11:45, the year ones take to the pool in their events. All children should be guaranteed 3 events. At the very least freestyle and backstroke, or the kickboard equivalent, and a noodle race. Please come down. We would love to see you there. We would be most grateful if you could officiate, but appreciate those who come down to lend their support to their children also.
Thanks Mr Sutherland
I say it all the time, but we are blessed to have the best groundsman in Brisbane, in Mr Sutherland, who not only does the grounds and transports and puts up things like tents and PA's but also stays to officiate at carnivals as well as coaching sporting teams. If you see Mr Sutherland in the playground, don't forget to say “thank you” for all the extra things he does.
Year 6 Legacy
These Year 6's have worked very hard all year to assist others and to achieve their own goals. There are some outstanding sportspeople among them and some very helpful and organised people also. They have certainly helped with the running of carnivals this year. I would like to congratulate them all on their efforts all year and wish them the best for their futures and a Merry Christmas. We will miss you.

There'll be muffins, fruit and juice served in the tuck shop area from 8.15am.
A walking bus leaving from outside River City Cycles on Fairfield Rd (corner of Cowper St) at 8.10am or maybe you could ride a bike or scooter, catch public transport or car-pool with another family.

I wonder if we will get any classes with 100% of students actively travelling to school that day?

NUDE FOOD DAY WINNERS!!!
After finally rounding up all the litter audits from Nude Food Day and finding an assembly where everyone was there, we finally announced the winners of the Nude Food Day competitions.
The class winner for the least amount of rubbish on the day, with just 8 pieces of rubbish in total for the whole class and 19 students with no rubbish at all, was.........1P!
They now get to enjoy the glory of the Golden Bin Trophy, which came full of plastic-free treats for the class to share!
The names of all the students who had NO RUBBISH at all were put in a hat and two were drawn out. There were 321 students' names in the hat...well done!! The two winners were...Tristan from Prep 1 and Ainsley from 2K! They both took home a 'Save the Planet: The aussie kids guide' book and a nude food lunchbox!
NUDE FOOD DAY will be back in 2018 so keep practising and bringing nude food to school so we can keep our school grounds beautiful and litter free! Nature thanks you!

CHAPPY’S CHAT
A big 2017…
It’s been my busiest year yet, and like any other year it has come with some highs and some lows. Overall though, I’m so grateful that I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to be your Chappy, and to be a part of this great school.
Across the year, I’ve…
- Helped many children with pastoral care conversations to provide social and emotional support covering anxiety, friendship, and educational matters
- Helped parents with referrals for welfare support to access rental assistance, food programs and counselling
- Setup a Foodbank account to support family needs and create a supply of emergency school lunches
- Made hospital and home visits, and attended funerals
- Funded the purchase of school resources and uniforms for those in need
- Supported staff through difficult or challenging issues, and brought a little cheer through well-being projects and encouraging words
- Provided spiritual support when requested, and connection with community agencies and faith groups, including the RSL
- Been a positive role model and mentor, and provided lots of parenting tips
- Taught 6 Fun Friends and Friends for Life Classes
- Organised and run Chaplaincy programs including Thursday Club, a handball competition, Chappy Week, Movie Night, pancake breakfasts, and Camp at School with Dad
- Attended year 4 camp.
So what has this year been like for you? I know that there will also be many stories of triumph, joy and happiness that have been experienced throughout the year, but I know that there are also some tragic and sad stories. No matter what the year has been like, I hope that you and your family have found strength and comfort in each other, that you’ve been able to positively connect with others, and that there has been opportunity to learn, grow, and discover new things with your family about life and the wonderful world around us.
As school comes to a close, I wish you all much love, peace and joy at this special time of year. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope that 2018 is a good year, no matter what it brings.
A big thank you…
I want to take this opportunity to thank Debbie Cowie for all her work this semester in supporting me in my role while she has been acting Deputy Principal. I’ve really enjoyed working with her, and appreciated how she has been so helpful and kind. She is truly a lovely lady.
To the parents and grandparents who volunteer their time to be part of the Chaplaincy committee and support me through all my events, thank you. I wouldn’t be able to do amazing events without your effort.

ARCHIVES MATTER
During 2017, we farewelled Mrs Carla Walker as she retired from her position of Deputy Principal to pursue other interests. It is now time to farewell other beloved staff members – Judy Beckett, Judy Fallon, Glenda Webb, Michelle Noye and Kerri McGuire. We wish all of these women a wonderful retirement.
Before Mrs McGuire leaves, I have taken the opportunity of recording some of her memories of when she was a student and teacher at this school. In recognition of the long association that Mrs McGuire has had with the school and the many generations of her family who have attended, a special lift-out has been attached that highlights some of Mrs McGuire’s reminiscing’s.
