BALLGAMES DAY – Thursday 14 September
We are changing the date of ball games day from Tuesday 12 September to Thursday 14 September. Some staff will be absent on Tuesday 12 September, engaging in professional learning days in our CPL Network. Thank you for your understanding. We hope you are able to join the children on this great annual school event. I am sure the teachers will be letting you know the dress up theme for the day shortly! Prep students will be about 10:15 or so. Year 1 &2 from 9:15am and Year 3-6 at 11:45am.
SOUTHSIDE HONOURS CAMP
Congratulations to the 13 students, from Year 5 & 6, who have been offered places in the Southside Honours Program this year. We are very proud of them and wish them all the best. Thank you Mrs Rosewarne for the outstanding work you do with the Instrumental Music program, helping our children be eligible for such performance opportunities.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM
Queensland schools are funded to provide student access to an Instrumental music program, for a certain number of vacancies on a set range of instruments annually. Each year schools conduct a recruitment process, according to EQ guidelines, to identify which children have the aptitude and disposition to participate in the instrumental music program. Yeronga State School will begin our recruitment process for Year 2 (Strings) and Year 3 (Instrumental Music) in readiness for 2018 shortly.
Inclusion in a band or ensemble comes with great responsibility for the child and the family.
- Deliberate Practice - A commitment to 20 minutes deliberate practice, 5 times a week is necessary for children to develop the skill set necessary to feel confident when playing an instrument. Like learning to read, or play soccer or netball, it is time spent engaged in deliberate practice that makes the difference.
- Weekly band/ ensemble practice - A netball team cannot play effectively with only 5 players. Bands and ensembles are the same. Children must attend practice on time each week.
- Concert performances - There are a number of concert performances throughout the year and the responsibility of attending these is part of the free tuition and access to the quality Music teachers.
If you are thinking that you would like your child to be a part of the music program, please complete the online nomination form asap as we will adhere to the closing date. Please be aware that the limited number of vacancies means that not all students can participate.
Students who are currently in the program need to return their Continuing Student Information forms so we can determine the number of vacancies for 2018.
There is a cost for participation in the program, to provide music and instruments for beginning students. Pre-payment of this levy in 2018 is necessary before tuition can begin.
BYOD- 2018
Yeronga State School 2020 Vision - Connected Individuals, Curious Learners and Community Minded Citizens means we have to look for ways to allow our children access to the tools they need to demonstrate their learning in creative and engaging ways. This includes allowing children access to technology seamlessly and not having the individual access stop at the school gate.
In 2018 we will introduce a BYOD program for one year level (Year 2), with the intention of expanding across the school in following years. I understand that people have varying opinions about BYOD and it can be an emotive topic. We have not made this decision lightly and we will be having two whole school meetings this term to share information about our approach and two information sessions for 2018 Year 2 parents early next term. I encourage you to reserve your judgement, concerns or celebrations until you have heard more information about these plans.
YSHS Y Tours
Yeronga State High School run regular tours of the school, including a Q&A session and share their practice to help parents gain an insight into high schooling. If you are yet to take one of these, I encourage you to do so at times outlined on this flyer.
Curiosity and Powerful Learning Network
Yeronga State School is a member of the Curiosity and Powerful Learning network that includes schools such as Graceville State School, Indooroopilly State School, Fig Tree Pocket State School and Nundah State School. The network exists to support schools as they transition from the more prescriptive curriculum to a curriculum that emphasizes an inquiry approach.
An inquiry approach is a student centred, working from children’s interests and needs, enabling them to have greater ownership and agency over their learning. Children work individually and collaboratively, investigating concepts and developing knowledge and skills, to help them be more creative, collaborative, curious, critical thinkers. These are essential as our children prepare to operate in a predicted future of greater uncertainty and significant change.
Our partnership with fellow schools helps us to:
a) Monitor school improvement
progress through instructional rounds or mini school reviews
b) Share professional resources to help us learn
from and with each other.
c) Source quality professional learning,
including world class researchers like Bill Lucas, Kath Murdoch and John
Munro
Staff and I have visited a number of CPL schools recently and we are reassured that our work in this space is on track to creating learning environments that foster literate, numerate and curious learners. We are a part of a strong and recognised network of schools, who together are leading the way in creating learning environments for modern learners.
THANK YOU
On Wednesday we had a glitch in our SMS system that led to all parents receiving an SMS text about student absence. Thank you to all parents who responded promptly and appropriately, and with understanding. I continue to encourage you to assume the best until you have spoken to us as there can be `glitches’. I would like to thank the YSS Office staff for the excellent way they managed the morning.
A STATEMENT OF COMMITMENT TO TEACHING PROFESSION
Teaching as a profession has been poorly portrayed in the media over the last 10 years or so. Everyone has a prior experience of schooling which means that most people have strong views and expectations of schools and teachers. Being a member of the teaching profession comes with huge responsibilities and teaching cannot be entered into without committing to some essential principles. The Australian Council of Education Leaders and Queensland College of Teachers have developed A Statement of Commitment to the Profession of Teaching, with the purpose of helping highlight the importance of the role of teacher.
One important principle is to acknowledge the changing nature of knowledge and the need for a commitment to continuous learning. YSS teachers continually seek to improve their daily practice, using both evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence.
Quality Teachers participate in Professional Learning
Yeronga State School teachers are committed to professional learning to help ensure every child in every classroom is set up for success. On Wednesday 6 and 13 September and the 4 October, 12 teachers will be participating in training to increase their understanding of students with disabilities. Beginning teachers will be participating in Classroom Profiling which enables them to analyse interactions taking place in their classroom to ensure they are employing the most effective teaching and learning practices.
Teachers participate in Triad Peer Coaching each fortnight, collaboratively planning how to respond to the needs of their class, with the Master Teacher, Jane Leishman or Pedagogical Coach/ Acting DP, Deb Cowie. Currently teachers are examining Assessment for Learning in Mathematics, looking at non-routine Maths problems to help stretch and challenge children’s thinking.
Year level teachers engage in collaborative year level planning fortnightly, with our Head of Curriculum Louise Vaggs. This process ensures consistent teaching and learning practices exist within year levels and helps ensure moderation of student achievement aligns.
Instructional coaching is available for teachers who want to deepen their understanding on any of the targeted areas for the school improvement agenda.
The quality teaching at YSS is due to the incredible growth mindset of the YSS staff, actively participating in ongoing quality professional learning experiences.

Student led initiatives
We like to be able to support our students in showing initiative. Our students learn so much from being able to float an idea, generate interest and be able to see this take fruition. As teachers we support these initiatives and encourage you as parents to support and encourage our students to become entrepreneurs. Help our students to understand that not every idea gets off the ground and even in failure there is learning for a newer and better idea. I would like to share this week some student initiated ideas. These include the Robotics club, the Indigenous Literacy book swap and the Nude Food challenge and of course the Student Council events that support various charities. Please note that none of these initiatives would be feasible without the support of parents who volunteer their time to support our students. A big THANK YOU needs to go to them.
Robotics Club
I thought I would give you an update on our Robotics and Drone club. Our year three and four students have joined the club. We now have 32 students involved in coding, robotics and drones. Our year three and four groups (who we call our junior coders) have had their induction from the seniors. They have learned about the safety aspects of drone flying and got to fly drones on Wednesday. They have learned what the different components of the robots are and how the different sensors work. This week they will start exploring the coding aspect of the robots. We have a group of curious spectators who observe from the safety zone and can’t wait to be in year 3 so that they too can experience the challenges that the Robotics and Drone club set for themselves. This initiative has been proposed, led and managed by a group of year six students.
Nude Food
Our students have analysed the waste in the school and are promoting the use of nude food concepts. Without stealing their thunder please read and support this student initiated idea. This initiative is being run through our Green Team and has a mixture of ages from year three to six.
Indigenous book swap
Madison has seen the information about Indigenous Literacy figure and believes that we as a school can make a difference. Please read the information about how we can support this programme. This would include bringing a book to school and offering a gold coin donation. This initiative is being promoted and led by a year three student.
Student council
Our next event is the PJ day during book week. We are looking forward to coming to school in our PJ’s that day and reading to our buddies. They are asking for a gold coin donation which will go towards the Pyjama Foundation who supports students in foster care situations.
Our fundraising has also allowed the school to purchase an additional bubbler.
We understand how difficult it is to find the gold coin to donate, if your purse looks like mine than you have no cash. We have offered the opportunity to pay through the office using B-pay or Q-schools. You will have received an invoice for $5 which will pay for the author visit as well as the donation to our two charities. Thank you for you co-operation with this one.
ICAS
This year we have offered the option for our students to do the ICAS tests, as a user pays option, again. ICAS has approached the school and offered to show us a demonstration of what the whole cohort data could look like, using our own student data, as they are improving some of their reporting options. This offer has been made free to the school and we accepted the offer for our year 2 and year 4 students for Mathematics. Our reasoning for this is firstly this data could provide additional information for us to be able to triangulate against our current assessments and secondly we felt that an opportunity to have a practice low stakes test before a NAPLAN year would give our students some experience in test taking. If you have any concerns about this please come and see me.

MUSIC
Instrumental Music Recruitment for 2018 – Year 2 and 3 Parents
Yeronga State School is privileged to have access to both the Orchestral Strings and Concert Band Instrumental Music Programs provided by Education Queensland. Schools in the program are allocated a set number of places, which equates to a time allocation. Within this allocation, a balance of instrument types within ensembles ensures:
Recruitment of Beginners
Parents with students interested in these programs are requested to read the document Instrumental Music Program – Recruitment for 2018 thoroughly, engage with the suggested videos with their child, then use the links to nominate their child.

Continuing Students
It is important that we know who is continuing in 2018, to set the number of places available for beginners. Band students in years 4 & 5 and strings students in year 3,4 & 5 will receive information very soon. While it is expected that all students would continue for their time at Yeronga, some students may be leaving, and their place can be allocated to a 2018 beginner.
Changes to Payments
Our program is self-funding, as it is in many schools. Invoices for continuing students and beginners will need to be paid this year to ensure the Instrumental Budget is set and available. This is a change from previous years. A $50 resource fee is payable by all program participants. Beginners pay $10 for their ensemble folder and all students using a school instrument pay $90. Continuing students will be invoiced in week 1 of Term 4, Beginners in week 5, with payment for all instrumental program invoices, beginner and continuing, due during week 8 (Wednesday, November 22).
View ‘n’ Q&A
Prospective students and parents can view a rehearsal and stay for an informal Q&A time with the program Directors.
Strings Program with Charise Holm: Monday 4 September - Brandenburg Strings rehearsal viewing from 8.15 - 8.30am and a Q&A from 8.40 - 9.00am - Senior School music room, F block (above the uniform shop)
Band Program with Robyn Rosewarne: Wednesday 30 August - Senior Band rehearsal viewing from 8.15 - 8.30am; Q&A anytime from 8.40 - 9.00am Upstairs, L block (Junior School).
Year 3 Recorder – Interim Reports
Year 3 students will receive their interim recorder progress reports this week. The grade is an interim one, not a final grade. It indicates if there are any issues. Already, students have responded to the individual feedback received as part of this process and productive changes are being made. Others are well on their way and are being extended. Parents will be contacted by email if there are larger concerns. Term 4 will see us apply our skills and knowledge to composing our own tuneful music.
New Southside Community Choir
Cheep Trill is an exciting, edgy and colourful community choir based in Brisbane, conducted by Emma Dean and assisted by Tony Dean. The choir is open to anyone, above the age of 14, who loves to sing! A new chapter of Cheep Trill Community Choir is forming at a Southside venue, and the Yeronga Community is invited. Members learn and perform all sorts of music with a strong emphasis on original contemporary vocal arrangements and mashups written by Emma. So far, they have performed at The Laneway Festival Brisbane, The Empire Theatre Toowoomba, The Southport Community Centre for Coast To Coast Animal Rescue, Brisbane Powerhouse, Eat Street Markets and Concert Hall QPAC! Cheep Trill is also getting a reputation for being Brisbane’s most colourful flash mob choir, ‘flashing’ at many high-profile Arts events! In 2017 the choir has accompanied John Farnham, Katie Noonan, Kate Cebrano, Clare Bowditch, Deborah Conway, Isaiah and Hannah Macklin and even featured on the SONY charity single of You’re The Voice, raising money for DV Connect. BOOK SWAP
You can make a difference!
Did you know that only 25% of Indigenous students in very remote areas are at the minimum reading standard, compared to 90% of non-Indigenous students? Yeronga would like to raise funds to improve these literacy rates in conjunction with our upcoming Book Week celebrations by holding a Great Book Swap.
The idea is to swap a favourite book in exchange for another and give a gold coin donation. This money will then be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to buy age and subject appropriate books for remote communities.
So, on Wednesday 30 August, please:
- Bring your book (preloved but in good condition)
- Swap your book
- Donate your gold coin
We have three events for Book Week that require a financial contribution - The author visit –Cameron Stelzter at $2.00, the Book Swap and PJ day. In order to make it easier for you as a parent we have invoiced you for all three and we will distribute the donations at the office. The total invoice is $5.00. You may choose to round this off to $5 or more, if you are feeling generous.

WINTER WRITING COMPETITION
The Winter Writing Competition brought some brilliant entries from many writers in years 2 through to year 6.
There was beautiful poetry, fabulous short stories with great descriptive paragraphs, and even full length novels broken down into chapters with clear orientations, complications and well written resolutions. Some entries included illustrations and one Year 2 writer even made a proper cover for his book including title art and a back cover blurb! It was most impressive. Judging was, of course, difficult as there is so much potential among the young writers here at Yeronga.
Winners were announced on assembly last Thursday and special mention went out to Abbey, Ellie and Ellana, for their very scary story entitled “Lurking In The Dark”. Another special mention went to Charlotte for her story “The Live Giant Banana” which had wonderful illustrations to accompany her
funny and imaginative tale.
Second place was awarded to Elesi for her terrific short story “The Winter Land Discovery” and there was a tie for first place!
Congratulations to Ye Jin and Yesmi for their beautifully written piece called “Black Rose” and to Alex and Amelia for bringing us ‘The Ice Monster”.
Thank you to everyone who entered. It was wonderful to see you writing because you wanted to, not just because you had to. This joy showed in all your works and made them so pleasurable to read. Keep writing!
The winning stories are attached here for you to read for yourselves. Enjoy!

Sunnybank District Sporting Trials
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 possess the advantages of size and speed, if not skill on most occasions. Selectors are choosing those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials, meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to go to a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a district trial, children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks’ notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

CHAPPY’S CHAT
My 2 biggest fundraisers of the year are coming up in September. They are both excellent events where you will have a great time out with your family and others in the school community, but they are also vital in raising funds to ensure the Chaplaincy program is well supported. Thank you for your ongoing encouragement and support in my efforts.
Camp at School with Dad - 9/10 September
“Camp at School with Dad” is coming up very soon on the night of Saturday 9 October. The camp provides a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with your children, as well as meeting lots of other Dads and their kids from across all year levels. The school oval is transformed into a sea of tents and activity.
The Kurilpa Scouts are again hosting a campfire for us to enjoy and I have some fun games ready to go testing our Dad’s abilities with soccer, paper planes, strong-man and hula-hoop competitions to name a few. There’ll still be time to sit, relax and spend time with your children.
Dinner and breakfast are included in the price and I will have vegetarian and halal options if required. The camp shop will be selling hot and cold drinks, as well as ice-cream with mix-ins for dessert. So come prepared for a treat or two.
The flyer for this event has been sent home, but paper copies are also available at the payment boxes, and the download link attached. All you need to bring is your own tent, bedding, camp chairs, toothbrushes and torches. I’m looking forward to seeing you there.

Riverfire Function at YSHS - 30 September
This year you can enjoy Brisbane’s best fireworks from the top floor of the Admin Building at Yeronga State High School, which has spectacular views of the city. Tickets for this great night are available from both YSS and YSHS school offices. Register early as there will be only 120 tickets released and will need to be purchased before the end of term.
Ticket price ($20 each, $50 family of 4) includes dinner and dessert. Check out the attached flyer for all the details of this fantastic event.

MEET OUR STAFF
Debbie Quinn
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
I decided to become a teacher when I was a high school student. I was inspired by a teacher at my school.
What other schools have you worked at or where else have you worked?
Since graduating I worked full-time at Kingaroy State School. I taught there for 2 years. I was then transferred to Bowen State School where I worked for six years in the infant area of the school. Since then I have been working at Yeronga State School. I have taught Prep and Year One. I taught full-time until I started my own family and then moved to a part-time position. Now that all my children are at school I teach full-time.
Who is in your family? What do you like to do together?
I am a mum to 14 year old Ryan, 11 year old Lincoln and 6 year old Erin. We have two dachshunds, Chippy and Frankie. We also have three chickens and three blue budgies. My husband Peter and I like taking our children to the movies. We also like to spend time in the backyard, gardening and playing.
What do you like to do on the weekend?
I like going to the beach with my family. We love to swim and walk along the beach. On longer holidays we love to go camping in our camper trailer. Like most families, our weekends are busy doing housework and homework!
Where is the most exciting place you have visited?
My most exciting trip was to Fiji. We went there as a birthday celebration for my husband. We had a fabulous time swimming and spending time in the sun. We recently went to Port Macquarie for a week. My family had a camel ride along Lighthouse Beach. It was very relaxing. A lovely memory!

GREEN TEAM NEWS
This week in assembly, the Green Team introduced the school to the concept of 'Nude Food'!
What is 'Nude Food'? We're glad you asked!
Nude Food is simply food that is not wrapped in foil, plastic or commercial packaging!
The school puts out 18 GENERAL WASTE BINS full of rubbish every week.
14 BIN BAGS FULL OF RUBBISH (mostly small soft plastics) were collected on Clean Up Your School Day back in Term 1
The Green Team decided that this was a problem we needed to tackle. They thought it would be great to reduce the amount of small plastic packaging that comes to school in the first place.
Enter Nude Food!
As well as being good for the environment, Nude Food is usually healthier for you too!

Active School Travel
Don’t forget every Friday is Active School Travel Day at Yeronga State School.
Walk, ride your scooter or bike, catch public transport (even if it’s just one stop) or carpool by grabbing a lift with another family.
It’s all about creating healthier, more active students and parents, greater road safety awareness among students and families, and safer streets and reduced traffic congestion at the school gate.
Every child should have an Active School Travel Passport which is stamped each time they actively travel.
Passports can be stamped in the Senior School (under the Grade 3 building) and in the Junior School (outside the Grade 1 building). When children accumulate enough stamps they get a great reward.
Special Active School Travel Events:
1 September - Walking School Bus. Catch a walking bus to school and meet others from your neighbourhood.
1 September - Year 3-6 Bring your bike to school – lunch time obstacle course on the oval.
8 September Prep – Year 2 – Bring your scooter to school day – lunch time obstacle course outside the Year 1 building.
