OUR SCHOOL IS AS STRONG AS YOUR CONTRIBUTION
The fete was an excellent example of how strong our school truly is. What a magical day brought about through the outstanding contribution from many parents. Thank you for creating such a special day of wonderful memories for our children. The joy on the children’s faces as they raced from one activity to the next was heart- warming.
Congratulations to the fete committee for bringing to life your vision for our fete and to the many volunteers and their contribution.
Be sure to take a moment to read and reflect on some of the students’ writing and reflections about the fete this week- priceless!
PARENT EDUCATION
45 parents attended the Bridge Builders session on Wednesday evening, learning about how to resolve conflict in constructive ways. Such a terrific response from our community.
Our next parent education evening will be held on Wednesday 23 August from 7:00pm – 8:30pm on social media use with children. This event is being coordinated by the P&C and will have a $30 fee. For further details please see P&C ‘Save the Date’ attachment flyer.
As a school we are keen to support parent education in topics that interest you. Please e-mail the school office with your suggestions on topics that you believe would be worthwhile. This could be with an education focus around Maths, Reading or creating curious children to more home focussed topics.
BEHAVIOUR CELEBRATIONS
In the last week of school, children who have received a C or more for behaviour on their report card participate in a behaviour celebration. Prep – Year 2 will be involved in an outdoor learning session- nature play area, ecology plot, paper plane flying to name a few. Year 3-6 will have an extended lunch hour playing table tennis, board games, oval games, nature play, WII.
We are looking forward to celebrating our students’ great choices with them. You may like to check in with your class teacher if you have concerns about whether your child is on track to participate.

Curiosity and Powerful Learning
As a school we have embarked on the Curiosity and Powerful Learning journey, CPL for short. This focuses on four whole school theories of action and six teacher theories of action. Once a term our teachers are involved in a sprint cycle of coaching to improve their practice in a particular theory of action. For the past semester we have been focusing on asking higher order questions. As a parent you may ask “Well, what does that mean to me and my child”? As a measure of success, all the theories require that students are actively involved in driving their learning. Our students are learning the language of being able to explain their thinking and at a higher level justify their thoughts or opinions.
We are talking to our students about having a growth mindset and that when learning is the most difficult than you are helping to grow connections between the neurons. We watch the classdojo videos about growth mindset at assembly.
https://ideas.classdojo.com/
Here are some questions that you could ask your child about the first video.
- What was the biggest challenge you faced today?(Ask your child and ask them to ask you back).
- How can you and I think about these challenges in a new way?
- What can we do tomorrow if we face similar challenges?
It is important to note that higher order questions are not necessarily complex questions. They are questions that require deeper thinking. So when reading with your child it is helpful to be able to ask questions such as “What do you think….(will happen, about the characters, about the setting, about the illustrators use of colour etc.) and why do you believe this? Remember your four year old child who kept asking why!! Well parents, your time for revenge has come so you can ask your child “Why?” to stimulate their thinking.
Student Council Activities
The student council team shirt event that was washed out by cyclone Debbie will be happening this Friday. We will be combining with active school travel on Friday 2 June. There are walking school bus stops from 3 different places. Please bring a gold coin and wear your Formal Team Shirt. Students involved in Gala Day will need to change back into their sports uniform. The proceeds for this event are to go to Hummingbird House, which is Queensland’s only hospice for children. Hummingbird House is a place where kids can be kids, families can reconnect and precious memories can be created.
The student council has postponed the lunch time activities which were meant to be held in week 6 until week 9. On Wednesday 14 June the prep to year 2 students will have activities to practice their common wealth games skills for next year such as milk bottle skittles, hurdles race, weight lifting, bear crawl race, heal to toe laps around the hall, dance off, hacki sack toss, run, jump, hop races, and mini shot putt, during lunch time. On Friday years 3 – 6 will have lunch time activities which they can have fidget spinner races, build your own fidget spinner, and build a fidget spinner from the past. If you have any items such as cardboard, metal washers or string that you could donate, the student council will be appreciative.

From the Fete Committee
The fete committee would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support of the fete on Saturday. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and evening and we are thankful for every one of you who volunteered time on a stall or setting/packing up.
We would like to make special mention and thanks to those who put up their hand to run a stall on Saturday. We know and appreciate firsthand the extra effort and hours that you put in. So thank you to:
Georgina Rowe, Anna Crumpton, Chante Tanielu, Amy Bewley, Andrew Kerswell & Kath Underwood, Chrystal Hall, Faith Hage, Sam Kendall, Suzie Wiltshire, Kristin Stafford, Riza Price, Ili Bone, Leah Lane, Ann Webb, Lorien Beazley, Steve Griffiths, Andrew Howell, Maggie Nolan, Rebecca Hartwick, Di Rejimon, Fiona Musgrave, Maria Morell, Koulla Constantinou, Julia Long, Sophie Walker, Kirsten Chant, Mandy Flack, Andrea Wold, Jane Quire, Sandra Bingham, Kristen Jennings, the whole YOSHC crew and Megan Clarke.
Thank you all.
We would also like to thank Mark, the cleaner, who volunteered his time for the duration of the fete and kept our toilets clean and quickly and cheerfully cleaned up after some children who had overindulged on sweets and rides
Thank you to our groundsman, Paul Sutherland who helped us out immensely on the Friday, setting up and collecting tables and marquees. Helping with that massive job of collecting equipment was also Rick & Jane Quire, Christian & Kristen Jennings, Sandra & Steve Bingham, Hugh Webb, Gretta Palmer, Sara Burg and Brad Wegner.
Another special thank you to Hugh Webb who did a stellar job of organising and managing our entire sound and PA systems on the day.
Thank you to Kayt Duncan for volunteering to be our amazing MC! We're not sure how she managed but she did a fabulous job.
To the team of Dads who came in early on Saturday morning and hung electrical leads and assisted with ensuring we could run all of our extra electrical equipment on the day, we thank you too; Hugh Webb, Michael Oldham, Ben Tidey, Ashley Murray and Nev Leggo – you are all amazing!
Thank you to those families who turned up, unasked and unprompted on Sunday morning to help pick up rubbish, take down signs and tidy up so the school was ready for business on Monday.
To our teachers who took time out of busy class schedules to prepare our children for performing on fete day, their performances were all wonderful and a real highlight of the day and the parents and grandparents loved seeing them dance and sing. Thank you for your hard work!
Thank you to Heidi Caddies and George Chapman for taking some wonderful photos on the day - some of these can be seen on our fete Facebook page.
Thank you to David Gyte and Bottlemart for his continued support of the fete by assisting with the provision of drinks for the bar.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the cake stall - who knew we had so many talented bakers out there? That was an amazing effort and your generosity was overwhelming.
Unseen and behind the scenes were some very busy people counting money on the day – thank you to Lotte Hougaard, Kym Mansfield, Vicki King, Billie Holland, Michelle Killer, Melissa Anzolin, Tracey Hall, Brett Gillespie, Peter Williams and Tony Nutley.
Finally, thank you to everyone who came along and shared the day with us and supported the fete by buying ride passes, food, drink and having fun. We hope you and your family had a truly enjoyable day.
We can't wait to share the financial outcome of the fete with the whole school community as soon as final receipts and payments have been received and tallied. However, whilst the money is needed and welcomed, as a committee one of the greatest outcomes of the day is the wonderful sense of community that is created by the fete, and being part of something bigger than ourselves.
Thank you everyone!
from Sarah, Kate, Gretta, Leesa, Amy, Andrea, Faith, Megan, Sandra, Kristen, Sara
From the Cake Stall
“Bakers Baked! Cream got Whipped! Butter was Beaten! Thank you everyone for getting behind the Cake Stall and donating so many wonderful, gorgeous, amazing treats. It was just brilliant. We can’t thank you enough for your time, energy and generous efforts. Leah, Lorien and Ann for 2R/2HW”.
Raffle Winners
Congratulations to the 4 Yeronga families who were all recipients of prizes in the major raffle draw on Saturday night. It was pretty exciting for us to see members of our community win ALL of the prizes from the main raffle! We don't think that has happened before! We particularly look forward to hearing how the $5,000 flight centre voucher is spent! Congratulations to all the winners!
Art Canvasses
All purchased art canvasses not collected at the fete will be sent home via your child's class in the coming days. If you missed the opportunity, but would still like to purchase your child's canvas, please email yssfete@hotmail.com with your child's name and class details.

On Saturday our school had a fabulous fete. First my class did a concert. After that I played with my friend Erin. We went to the pony ride. Erin went on the brown pony and I went on a rainbow pony.
Finally I got to do my cheer performance. I had to put on eye shadow, mascara and red lipstick. It was awesome but it was exhausting.

MUSIC
Stella Voce is a choir consisting of Grade Fours to Sixes and Grade Threes needing the extension, which makes Stella Voce a large part of the senior community.
Last week Stella Voce performed in two separate competitions. The first competition (QYMA) was on Monday night where Stella Voce put on an outstanding performance and received a Gold Award. We got into the finals which are being held on Monday 5 June. The second competition (Creative Generations) was held at Sherwood State School on Wednesday morning. We again sang very well and received a Silver Award along with one other choir. It was a great experience and good practice for the QYMA finals.
At both events the choir members showed great performance manners. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms Plumridge for guiding us through two spectacular performances. And thank you to all members of the choir for participating and continuing the amazing reputation of Yeronga State Primary School.

Yeronga State School Senior (Years 3-6) Athletics Carnival Day 20 June
As with all of these events we would like to extend an invitation to all parents to attend this carnival. Due ongoing construction being carried out in the Yeronga State School grounds I have organised a reserve venue if our grounds become unsuitable. Mr Palmer has kindly consented to us using the Yeronga High School Oval if required. I will advise you shortly after the fete as to which venue we will use.
Additionally we would very much appreciate some help in officiating on the day. Last year we had a very healthy contingent of parents assisting which made the carnival a very smooth operation. If you can spare some time it would be most appreciated.
Mr Harvey, from Yeronga State High School, also kindly lent us some of his maths students last year. Many thanks to him for this. I am hopeful of a repeat performance this year if exam timetables permit.
Timetable for the Athletics Carnival
The day will commence at approximately 8:45am with the march past. At 9:00am the boys’ field rotations will commence in the following order. Each rotation will take 30 minutes and these rotations will therefore conclude at 11am. While the boys are completing these the girls will be completing the heats and finals of their sprints and 200m events.

The Yerongalympics
This event is a Tabloid sports event comprised of five activities, explained below, which give first turns to children who have been in the least amount of field events.
Activity 1 The Dress up relay
A minimum of 6 children are assembled in line. On the whistle the first child will put the clothes on. They will then go over obstacles around the turnaround marker and back to the team assembly point. Once there they will give the next person in line the clothes and they will have a turn. One point for each person through. Teams keep having as many turns as possible, tallying their points, until the whistle blows to stop. The amount of times the course is completed will equal the amount of points each team has scored.
Activity 2 The Barrel Relay
A minimum of 6 children are assembled in line. On the whistle the first child will put the barrel on its edge and roll it, weaving in and out of the markers, turning around at the turnaround marker and weaving in and out of the markers back to their team. Once there they will give the barrel to the next in line so that they may complete the course. One point is given for each person through. Teams keep having as many turns as possible, tallying their points, until the whistle blows to stop. The amount of times the course is completed will equal the amount of points each team has scored.
Activity 3 The “Every Drop is Precious Relay”
A minimum of 6 children are assembled in line. On the whistle the first child will pick up the cup and run out to the reservoir over the hay bales. Once there they will draw a cup of water and take it back to their bucket and pour it in. When they have completed their turn they will pass the cup to the next person in line. Teams keep having as many turns as possible, tallying their points, until the whistle blows to stop. Markings on the bucket will indicate how many points the team has scored.
Activity 4 Rubber Boot Throwing
A minimum of 6 children are assembled in line. On the whistle the first child will pick up the rubber boot, throw it as close as possible to the target circle. The target will be two circles, one inside the other. The inner circle is worth 10 points and the outer is worth 5 points . Once they have completed their turn by retrieving the rubber boot the first person will pass the rubber boot to the next person in line. Teams keep having as many turns as possible, tallying their points, until the whistle blows to stop.
Activity 5 “Running Cheek to Cheek”
A minimum of 6 children are assembled in line in pairs. On the whistle the first pair place the gator skin ball between their faces. They must weave in and out of the markers and go around the turnaround marker and return to their team weaving in and out of the markers with the gator skin ball between their faces. If the ball should fall they must pick it up before continuing. Each pair through will score one point for their team. Teams keep having as many turns as possible, tallying their points, until the whistle blows to stop.
Sunnybank District Sporting Trials
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 possess the advantages of size and speed, if not skill on most occasions. Selectors will choose those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials, meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to go to a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial, children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks’ notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

GALA DAY 2
Boys A Division Soccer
Both the Junior and Senior teams had good wins against Robertson State School and Warrigal Road State School. As both teams are undefeated they will most likely play the big three schools (Sunnybank Hills, Algester and Stretton) of our district this Friday. This will be a big challenge for the boys. Good luck boys!
Sunnybank District Football (Soccer)
Our soccer stars had a successful two days at the Met West trials in Ipswich on May 16 and 17. Thea and Lucy were part of the undefeated Sunnybank Girls team coached by Mr Curness. The team had 4 wins and 1 draw. Yohan and Joe’s team had mixed results over the two days. Joe was successful in gaining selection in the Met West Boys team and he will attend the State Championships in Hervey Bay early next term. This would be one of the most challenging regional teams to make due to the number of highly skilled boys who play soccer. The future looks bright for all 4 players as Joe, Yohan and Lucy are 11 years old and Thea is only 10.

CHAPPY’S CHAT
Congratulations to the P&C who put on a spectacular school fete last weekend. It was a great opportunity for me to catch up with many parents and be a part of a wonderful community of people working together for their school.
This week there are lots of information to tell you about:
Chappy Week Treasure Hunt …
Forms have been sent home this week for your children to participate in the annual Chappy Week Treasure Hunt. Usually this event happens closer to Easter with the prize being a chocolate bunny or decorative egg. As Chappy Week is being held later in the year, prizes this time are all non-food, and are a lucky dip of fun items including spiders, stationery packs, bubbles, and small toys. If you don’t have a form, please pick one up from the payment boxes in either the senior or junior school. To avoid any disappointment, forms need to be returned by Friday 9 June.
Qld Father of the Year Colouring-In Competition…
Nominate a deserving dad or father figure for the 2017 Qld Father of the Year Competition presented by SU Qld. The Queensland winner will win a five night family holiday at Sea World Resort and Water Park. In 2014, a wonderful YSS Dad was the regional winner for Brisbane South. Do you know an inspirational father to honour and nominate? Check out the link below.

ARCHIVES MATTER
This Friday, students in the senior grades will compete in Gala Day competitions. Yeronga State School will verse other local schools in football, tee-ball and softball. Gala Days are held 3 times a Semester but it hasn’t always been like this.
The first time Yeronga State School competed in inter-school sports was in 1922 and our school had its very own war cry! Tennis was a very popular leisure activity and was also an inter-school sport. Yeronga was known as the school to beat when it came to tennis. Maybe Yeronga students were so good because in 1959 tennis courts were opened in the school grounds. These tennis courts were located where the Dental School is now situated.
During the 1960’s, Yeronga competed in basketball, softball, tennis, cricket, rugby league, vigaro, AFL, swimming and athletics. In years gone by, girls weren’t given the same opportunities to play traditional boys sports as they are today. There was no such thing as a girls AFL team or rugby league team. Girls sport was primarily ballgames like Leader Ball, Captain Ball and Tunnel Ball. Ballgames are no longer an inter-school sport but Yeronga still has a Ballgames Challenge Day where classes dress up and compete against each other.
In the 1980’s, inter-school sport was every Friday afternoon. Yeronga would travel and compete against another school. Yeronga students wore a sports uniform that was very different to what we wear today.
Yeronga has a very proud tradition of inter-school sports and competing against other schools. The format of inter-school sports has changed over the years but Yeronga students are still displaying the traits of resilience, determination and good sportsmanship.
