PRINCIPAL Parent Q&A Sessions
This term I would like the opportunity to touch base with year level parents for an informal discussion on Thursday mornings at 9am. Parents can ask questions about the school in general and seek clarification about anything of interest. It will give parents the opportunity to provide feedback about things we can celebrate and maintain, things they think could be changed or are not working and recommendations for the future. I hope you can join me in the Resource Centre on the following dates:
04 May - Year 5
Parents
11 May - Year 3 Parents
18 May - Prep Parents
25 May - Year 6 Parents
01 June - Year 2 Parents
08 June - Year 4 Parents
15 June - Year 1 Parents
SPECIAL GUEST - ANZAC DAY CEREMONY – 21 April 9:00am
Dr Jim Watterston, Director General, Queensland Department of Education and Training, will be visiting our school for the first time this Friday for the ANZAC day ceremony. This event is an important one on our calendar and I am looking forward to sharing the excellent work we do at Yeronga with Dr Watterston. Please remind children that they need to wear formal school uniform this Friday for this whole school event.
ANZAC DAY MARCH – 25 April 6:50am
The Stephens RSL conducts an annual march from the Stephens RSL, along Ipswich Rd, to the Yeronga Memorial Park cenotaph where the Anzac Day ceremony will take place. Yeronga State School will be participating this year and I am inviting all families to join in. Students will need to wear the formal school uniform and assemble at ‘The Muddy Farmer’ Carpark, 60 Junction Terrace, Annerley at 6:50am. It would be wonderful to see many of our students, representing our school proudly in this important annual community event. I hope to see you there.
NAPLAN
The annual NAPLAN tests will take place from Tuesday 9 May to Thursday 11 May. Please ensure that you contact the school if your child will not be present for these dates. Alternative arrangements can be made during that week. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s participation in the testing program, please contact your child’s class teacher to discuss strategies.
Preparation for NAPLAN is embedded in the curriculum activities that your children engage in every day at school. NAPLAN tests give the school information about how effective the school, class and individual student programs are in supporting student learning in every year of schooling, not just Year 3 and 5. Encouraging and supporting your children to complete given homework tasks and using feedback from parent teacher interviews to strengthen perceived challenges are all ways that parents can support their child’s learning every day, and is the best preparation for NAPLAN.
FACILITIES UPDATE
The senior school toilets have been demolished and clearing the site for our new building has begun in earnest. The new building will have two classrooms, a music room and a music practice room as well as a new toilet block. We will keep you updated on the progress. The projected finishing date is September at this stage.
Work will begin in the next week on the Year 1 brick building in the Junior school. The roof and front stairs will be fixed as part of this renovation work. The front stairs will be closed for at least 6 weeks.
SCHOOL UNIFORMS
Thank you to everyone for ensuring our students are correctly dressed and presenting as proud Yeronga State School students. The winter uniform is worth reviewing as our very long summer seems to be coming to an end.
Jumpers worn to school should be navy blue in colour with no brand names or additional stripes, logos etc. The school uniform shop does have school jumpers available and plain all navy blue jumpers are also acceptable. All other jumpers are not acceptable to wear at, to and from school.
Children can wear navy blue or white skivvies or long sleeved shirts under their formal uniform. Singlets or plain blue or white t-shirts/ singlets that cannot be seen under the formal shirts are also an option when additional layers are needed.
Navy blue tracksuit pants are the bottom layer of the school winter uniform and navy blue full length leggings or tights are appropriate for our female students.
PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Thank you to the parents who took part in the Parent/Teacher Interviews last term. It is hoped that you gained a good insight into how your child is operating in terms of effort and performance. Hopefully you also understand where your child needs to improve and some strategies for assisting. As a follow up to these interviews we would appreciate your feedback via the following link:

All students must wear their sports uniform, hat, sunscreen and shoes and socks (please note the Senior Shirt is not the sports uniform). Students also need to bring their morning tea, lunch and water bottle. Some venues do have a canteen.
Sunnybank District Sporting Trials
The representative pathway for school sport is for children from 10 to 12 years of age. Yeronga is part of a very strong district which consists of 28 schools from Yeronga State School to the Calamvale area. In contact and skill team sports those aged 11 and 12 possess the advantages of size and speed, if not skill on most occasions. Selectors are choosing those with the skill and the resilience to compete at a higher level. Remember that selectors give up their time for these trials meaning that it is important for us to send only those ready to go to a higher level. Very seldom is it appropriate to send students for experience. An indicator of readiness for participation at a higher level would be being among the best 3 or 4 players in most games for your club under 12 teams.
In order to be selected to attend a District Trial children should make themselves known to me (Mr Bateman) for either a selection trial with the appropriate teacher or so that they may be given the appropriate forms. Remember that children must give at least two weeks notice that they wish to attend a district trial to allow for a school selection trial to be held in the event of a great deal of interest being shown in a particular sport.

CHAPPY’S CHAT
Welcome back to school for term 2. I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and Easter weekend. It is as special time of year for me, as the Easter story is an important foundation to my faith. One of the key messages is one of sacrifice; the death of one person for the sake of others, because of great love.
Thinking about the coming ANZAC Day, it is also about sacrifice. It is a time to remember those who lay down their lives so that we might have freedom, security and the opportunity to flourish and prosper. We can enjoy such liberty as a country because of the actions of those who served and continue to serve to defend our shores and our values. It is such a humbling thought, that we owe our lives to the dedication and sacrifice of others. Let’s always be grateful that we are today so blessed to be living in a great country.
